ANNA is a LATIN form of the GREEK name AVVA and the HEBREW name HANNAH meaning FAVOUR, GRACE, GRACIOUS, FULL OF GRACE


Development

Initial Development

Experimenting with different widths of pen and line shapes. Deciding what remains readable when different elements are changed. Refecting the logo so that it becomes a mirror image to express ‘Anna’ as a Palindrome.

Pronounced as...

The beautiful daughters of Zues and the nymph, Eurynome. The attendance of the Graces was the assurance of peace and happiness. The Graces were usually depicted as women dancing in a circle.

Anna Karenina A novel by the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy. Anna Karenina is the tragic story of a married aristocrat/ socialite and her affair with the affuent Count Vronsky.

ANNA is a Palindrome is a word, phrase, number, or other sequence of symbols or elements, whose meaning may be interpreted the same way in either forward or reverse direction.

Colour

I have decided to use a pale and delicate colour scheme to reflect the atmosphere of gracefullness. Blue and purple are very calm feminine colours. Blue is often used in Islamic design and seen on many mosaic tile designs. The hint of pale green captures the organic elements of Islamic Design.


Development

KUFIC Font

As my name is a Palindrome and so the KufIc font allowed the idea of a mirror image to work well. There were many ways to explore how the letters ANNA could interlink. This made me begin to think about patterns and how the whole logo could be potentially tessilated.

After learning more about the meaning of my name I tried to encorporate a graceful elegance to my designs by using more flowing lines and softening the kufic font. I began to see two main ideas develop; one which was based on the idea of symetry and the second which was a more elegant and natural shape inspired by the natural flora and fauna patterns found in Islamic design.

Idea one Symetrical idea of reflecting the logo as a mirror image. This could then be elegantly interlinked to create a pattern.

From this point onwards I decided to work in Illustrator to create my logo as I really wanted to achieve a symetrical form and it would allow me to tesselate the image much more easily than by hand. However I didn’t want to loose the natural, hand drawn elements of my designs so I scanned my orignal sketches and worked on top of these designs.

Finally I have chosen my second logo design, repeated in a floral pattern, because I feel it is both elegant and feminine whilst having an organic form which captures the essence of my name. It has a more modern feel than my first design and the possibility to be repeated in many different ways therefore capturing the palindrome nature of my name. It’s circular repeated form displays the international popularity of the name Anna.
