1 Optimally the hospital works as an efficient machine allow- ing everyday tasks to be solved with a minimum amount of employees. This has often been at the cost of the phiosophy of the late 19th century where concepts such as homeliness, nature and varied visual and spatial stimulation were believed to have a positive effect on the well-being of the patients. We believe in a 21st century healthcare, which combines the efficiency of functionalism with a human scale and the de-institutionalized patient experience of the 19th century. This approach combined with a profound respect for the integrity and character of the site and the old dacha will define the new medical center as the embodiment of next generation health care in Russia. We have created the medical center from the following dogmas: • A distinguished building that respects the heritage of the site. • Use the existing nature on the site as an active part of the architectural expression and provide a strong visual and physical connection between inside and outside. • A broken down scale that relates to the human body. • A deinstitutionalized hospital for both patient and employees, encapsulating a strong feeling of comfort and a homely exclusive ambience. • Be efficient, bridging the gap between a good workflow and coherent zoning. The landscape is conceived from the idea of making the smallest possible impact on the oak grove. Instead of de- signing a new landscape we choose to do a design that would have the smallest impact possible on the existing oak grove. The outdoor parking is arranged as a forest parking: The parking is organized around the existing trees thus minimizing the numbers that need to be cut down, whilst main- taining the feeling of being in nature. The forest floor continues into the green voids between the villas, ensuring a strong presence of nature in the hall and in all the medical functions.

Existing site with an old russia mansion.

By subdividing the volume of the new medical center into smaller “villas”,you create an unimposing building whilst complementing the inviting and homely ambience of the dacha.

The new seven villa-sized volumes are spread into an interlocked checkerboard-like pattern, where the volumes are arranged within a series ofvoids. This gesture carves the old dacha in the checkerboard composition, thus respecting the old dacha and making it an integrated component of the medical center.

The Green voids ensure a strong visual connection to the surrounding environment anad provide good daylight conditions throughout the entire hospital.

The new villas connect and open up to the old dacha via a spacious interior double-high courtyard, where the facade of the dacha is exposed and integrated as a key decorative element.

The meeting with the medical center starts with a dignified and prominent entrance which is situated on the southern side of the old dacha, where a staircase invites you into the grand hall.

The site is structured around three main entryways to the building: Visitor and staff entryway from the West, ambulance driveway from the South and loading from the North. By structuring all public entryways on the East facade you gain a clear and easy way finding for all visitors.

The fasade is built to last with solid materials of high quality. It is made from (specific) stone cladding with matching ceramic lamels. This gives a dignified, timeless and understated expression complimenting the old dacha. The lamels in front of the windows ensure privacy in precarious situations and create shadows to avoid overheating. The public areas have large sections of glass to assure adequate daylight, transparency and a strong relationship to nature. The verticality of the fasade creates a strong relationship to the surrounding forest.

“Egedalsvenge seeks to be a housing project that supports holistic and sustainable living arrangements. A Dwelling project that offers diversity in both composition of residents and the variety of outdoor spaces and activities. Our vision for the project has been based on two main requirements: -To unite Olstykkes suburban character and the dense population strategy with multiple green outdoor experiences. -To offer a variety of housing typologies that supports a diverse mix of residents which is a requirement for a good social environment and a vibrant town. The development consists of a number of small blocks that in unity creates a perimeter structure. The blocks are located on top of the parking, which is half buried in the landscape, forming two benches separated by a paved trail that runs from urban street north to the green area to the south. Surplus earth from the parking basements is used as a landscape feature that creates additional green element, forming connections and ramps between the different levels and making buildings accessible to everyone. Each floor of the buildings are offset from each other in order to create paths at different heights , leading to the homes on the 1st and 2nd floor. These shifts creates a vibrant and organic system of unexpected vniches, gardens and terraces as we know it from our old cities and villages.

HC Andersen’s original intention was to write stories approaching children, adults and older people. The tone of language is simple, while the content is highly complex and reflective. Therefore his universal stories are still relevant to people all over the world. Landscape, architecture and exhibition design forms generous and differentiated exhibition spaces approaching the different levels of perceiving the stories and lifting visitors imagination of the ground. The journey starts in the Fairytale Garden (Lotze’s Garden) where audience will experience fragments linking to the fairytales of HC Andersen. Glowing pavilions leads visitors towards the museum, where an extruded papercut unfolds in the landscape, revealing the museum beneath your feet. Entering through the main entrance with its gigantic bookshelves, audience are led downstairs to the exhibition spaces and further into the tales and the man behind the books. The journey is ending at HC Andersen’s childhood home. The fairytales of HC Andersen speaks to people all over the world, across gender and age. The house of fairytales should likewise approach audience of different cultural backgrounds. In order to reach both children and adults, the museum is divided in three parts adapted to the different levels of perceiving. House of fairytales is organized from three themes: a physical part that covers the huge collection of HC Andersen books and serving as the main entrance, an intuitive part covering the functions of the former Tinderbox museum and an analytic part that conveys the factual information about the writer HC Andersen. The three parts are closely connected enabling visitors to shuffle between different parts of the exhibition or to experience the exhibition in a continuous circular movement. Furthermore the courtyard gardens are a highly present part of the museum, connecting the inside to the outside. The patios can both be used for staging the exhibition or as an actual part of the exhibition space. Together the landscape, architecture and exhibition design forms a differentiated exhibition space approaching different levels of perceiving.

The primary objective of the competition was to create a modern, open, user friendly space that will meet the expectations of very diverse groups of users. The comprehensive and visually consistent assumptions are supposed to meet the functional and architectural arrangements of new reading rooms and public spaces of Library. Technological development, digital revolution and the social changes occurring in the world are forcing the improvement of the existing and introduction of new. During the design process we have distinguished main goals we based our work on. First of all we wanted to continue the prime idea about the functional program of the library while making it more clear and readable. We decided to remove as many unnecessary physical barriers as we can to create clean, open space with uninterrupted view. We let spaces of different functions fuse together so the library offers the diversity of usage, possibility to explore. The randomness of those fusions is actually carefully planned. It enables access to every part of the building and softly creates “paths between the books”. Building organization makes it also possible to recognize where the play turns into work or interaction slowly converts into concentration. We wanted to give unusable spaces a new meaning, so that they are the prolongation of the building. Especially we wanted to burst life into atriums. Neglected, closed and filled with random plants and furniture, but also with a big potential, atriums were transformed into gardens of different activities. So we gave each of them a new character depended on the location in the building, surrounding functions, form and size. Atrium of art – exhibition, performance, inspiration, artistic activity, opening, exposition. Atrium of experiences – meetings, interactions, lectures, movies, projections, projects. Atrium of silence – relaxation, contemplation, concentration, focus, calmness, delight. Atrium of herbs – pleasure, relaxation, rest, breath, meeting. Atrium for kids – play, fun, knowledge, activity, cognition, exploration.

The site is located in the northern quarter of London Borough of Lambeth, opposite the City of Westminster to the west and London Borough of Wandsworth to the south and is located along the Albert Embankment between Vauxhall and Lambeth Bridges. To the south is Vauxhall Cross, the main transport interchange for the area. To the north is Lambeth Palace adjacent to Lambeth Bridge, and further to the north, The Palace of Westminster and Westminster Bridge. Located at a bend in the River Thames, the site is clearly visible from key bridges in central London and is located directly opposite Tate Britain. The site is adjacent to the Albert Embankment Conservation Area which extends to Lambeth Bridge to the north and Vauxhall to the south and includes the Thames River Walk along the Embankment. To the east of the site the elevated Victorian railway viaduct serving Waterloo and Vauxhall Stations separates the hinterlands of Vauxhall from the River. To the north, The Corniche, the redevelopment of Hampton House, is currently under construction, as is Merano Residences, the redevelopment of Eastbury House. Several green spaces are within the vicinity of the site including Peddlers Park to the north, Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens to the southeast, and Albert Embankment Gardens, opposite the site to the south west. The design of the proposed building has evolved through an analysis of the immediate and wider site context and aims to create a proposal which in terms of height, scale, and urban grain, provides a positive contribution to the London skyline and the townscape of Albert Embankment and the surrounding local area. The massing concept extrapolates the compositional strategy established at Eastbury House by introducing further articulation to the massing by way of individual elements on the skyline, avoiding a wall-like presence at street level. The composition is arranged into four bars that are manipulated in plan, section, and elevation to create a finely articulated, distinct building when viewed in silhouette, in motion, and at street level.

The Art and film centre has been designed for the film festival called “Two rims”. Festival takes place every year at summertime in Kazimierz Dolny by the river Wisla. Two Rims is an interdisciplinary cultural event, presenting valuable Polish and foreign movies (premieres, important films of the past year, and the images that were crucial for the development of world cinema, as well as performances, exhibitions and other fields events. It was very important that the building provides different kinds of spaces where visitors can experience art. Those spaces of course should be both indoor and outdoor as the festival takes place during the summer, public and private, destined for crowds and small groups of people, providing all needed technical back-up yet giving a sense of uninterrupted contact with nature. Main function for the building is a cinema/theatre hall which could be divided into three smaller once. This function was mainly dictating the size and partly the shape of a building. The concept of having an enormously big volume went to its extreme, but by introducing the concept of surrounding, “stepping” into the building gardens, it was possible to establish an attractive building, facing the requirements and providing awaited ambience around it.

The main objective was to create a technology park complex, with an adequate range of necessary functions at a topographically diverse ground, which would not interfere with a shape of a landscape and natural environment. The project aims to create adequate facilities for developing the project, which is the Multimedia City, combining the most relevant features for this type of object, which are primarily: office space, laboratories, adequate spaces for employees, the necessary technical back-up, public spaces integrating members and visitors of the complex, as well as more private spaces. The main idea was to concentrate the functions around the “main market” as it used to be in an old town. Taking into account the directions of the world, buildings are descending the hill towards south. Office spaces, laboratories and vertical communication is facing south, east and west while technical functions, divided by the horizontal communication, are facing the north. The topology of a landscape is being preserved, which creates diversified terrain. Whole complex follows different height levels, yet still remains accessible to the disabled.

7 office brainville 7 665 m2 NOWY SĄCZ, POLAND year: 2012

Division of a function into three independent buildings

Placing buildings at different heights and creating a south facing public space in-between them

Placing buildings on a site which is located on a top of a hill, providing a privacy and contact with the nature still being in a very close connection with the city centre, site is located along one of the main communication artery of a city

Creation of three buildings in various sizes

Making a double high space along the facades facing the public outdoor space reduces the sense of isolation of each storey and provides main communication paths accessible from public space - also main entrance to the complex

Addition of an extra cubes placed differently at each floor in each building gives additional working space and breaks the block making buildings more diverse
