APOTHECARY The apothecary site is located in a developing part of Fayetteville, AR called Uptown. Uptown is an area focused on developing a strong community center for the residences of the surrounding apartment complexes, and the apothecary needed to cater to its surrounding community. Instead of functioning as just a retail space, the apothecary also held a designated area for community members and costumers to relax and meditate. Using light projection technology, the meditation space could change daily to allow for different types of healing. A major component of this project was its use of color. The glass display walls were different colors that corresponded to the effects of the holistic medicine, essential oils, and crystals that they were displaying. When the glass walls would be hit by light, a glow of color would envelope the area and objects near it. This experience was created with the effects of chromatherapy in mind.

The form of the display wall was originally inspired by kirigami. After creating several iterations with materials such as paper and felt, I decided to experiment with glass. This was an interesting waySOUTH to create 3D glass forms SECTION that could function as shelving.

COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER Access to quality healthcare is a significant challenge for people living in Arkansas. The 45% of Arkansans who live in rural areas face limited health care services because of travel distance, lack of personal vehicles, absence of public transportation, and lack of telephone/cellular coverage. Restrictive telemedicine regulations and the potential dissolution of the Affordable Care Act further complicates the challenges that Arkansans are already facing, and alternative healthcare environments that facilitate access to care are needed to improve the health problems confronted by our state’s residents. Innovative healthcare in Arkansas communities can bring care to the residents, transforming availability and increasing awareness. The clinic provides non-urgent care medical services with the convenience of being located in a local “big-box store. Patients receive basic outpatient medical care for low-acuity problems like cold symptoms and flu, sinus infections, minor injuries (cuts and sprains) and illnesses (strep throat, allergies, poison ivy, etc.). Health services typically include immunizations, sports and driver physicals, health screenings, and blood pressure monitoring. Promoting simplicity and accessibility with professional credibility, comfort, and sensitivity to personal health interactions is the first goal.

03 OFF-GRID

The goal of the off-grid house was to design a self-sustaining structure. The site was located in a rural town outside of Fayetteville, AR that provided a large plot of land and complete privacy. The challenge was to utilize a source of renewable energy on the site such as geothermal, wind, or solar energy. It could also be designed for any type of client. This house was designed for a pianist; curved walls created dynamic spaces that were meant to mimic the energy one might feel flowing through the house while the piano was being played. Sections of the walls shifted from opaque to transparent to capture outside views while providing privacy and protection from the sun where needed.

TEEN HEALTH POP-UP During the teenage years, kids experience changes physically, cognitively, and emotionally quite suddenly. These changes are accompanied by social pressures that exacerbate what is an already difficult series of transitions. Health education can help teens navigate these changes, access important resources, and reassure them that they are not alone. Unfortunately, there are often barriers to effective health education. Teens may not realize that what they are experiencing constitutes as a health risk. Peer pressure, embarrassment, and lack of access to materials can all prevent health education in the formative teenage years. Additionally, a primary aversion to health education is boredom. The challenge for the project was to create a self-contained unit that facilitated health education while fighting the stigma associated with mental health. This learning experience was primarily focused toward high school students and was meant to function as an autonomous structure within a school. The project started from the idea of using color and sound to trigger emotional responses while informing the student of how their body was being affected. This experience was intending to bring awareness to every day stressors that are often overlooked and, hopefully, lead to larger questions regarding the mental health of teens.

05 LA CUNA

The project confronts a current crisis that has serious repercussions for hundreds of thousands of people who, in many cases, have grown up, lived, attended college, paid taxes, and worked in the United States for almost their entire lives. These people could, at any minute, be detained and involuntary transported to a country that they are not familiar with and don’t know how to navigate, forced to leave behind their family, friends, possessions, and identity. The challenge was to create a space where they could live and learn and rediscover Mexico as a place that they could connect to. The project speculated how to create a community for these refugees that would otherwise feel like outcasts in this city that they are supposed to call home. The initial idea started by thinking of it as a city within a block because of all the programmatic specifications that had to fit into such a small space. The void in the building serves as a place for engagement between various spaces. Connecting “streets between the housing and program were pushed to the perimeter of the building to allow for a more direct connection between the balconies of the private units and the patios of the public program. The void also creates an important connection to the large park that is adjacent to the building. Interaction between the community on many different levels will facilitate the first steps of the refugees acclimating to the vivid culture that they are being immersed in.

Site analysis started as a way to understand how the people around the site are already living. Delegacion Benito Juarez is densely packed but is celebrated as having the highest standard of living in all of Mexico. The personality of the city is very easily seen through the vibrant materials and prominent corners that we recorded.

CHRYSALIS LIGHT Through a curated series of manipulations and process, a unique light fixture was developed. To begin the process, a cube was drawn in Rhino. Then, through iterations of simple commands, a 10x10 grid of objects was made. This proces was not only used to create objects whose geometry was derived from the objects that preceded them, but also whose form was further transformed in the objects that followed them. Together, they formed a sequential series. Building from the field of 100 objects, boolean operations were then used to generate new geometries. Pairs of objects selected from the 10x10 grid were joined using a boolean operation. This was done with two different pairs, and then the results of each pair were joined with another boolean operation to create a final form. The intention was to generate an interesting, faceted geometry that would be impractical or counterintuitive to a manual process. Models were then built using a two material strategy, one opaque and one translucent, to create a unique light effect.

A COLOR STUDY: VAN GOGH This work is part of a series of color studies done to investigate how renowned artists applied their knowledge of color theory to their art, and how they intended to manipulate the viewers perception of their art by the colors that they carefully chose. The figural studies were inspired by the work of Mary Ann Currier and the way she layered different colors of paper in a frame to alter how the colors where perceived. The Van Gogh study focused on representing colors proportionally based on their corresponding painting and arranging the colors to create visual depth on the flat surface.

DRAWING BY HAND Hand-rendering and drafting are important skills to develop because they reinforce understanding of the quality of space that is being created. These types of drawings also allow for a wider range of visual representation which, in turn, allows for more possibilities of explorations. Analog drawings create a connection from the brain to the hand, developing spatial understanding that is not always gathered by creating lines on a screen.

09 SAUNA

The challenge of this project was to design a sauna experience focused on the poetic qualities of the space. Meaning, the form was secondary to the experiential narrative that was created. Because the site of this project was placed on the edge of a lake and extended into the surrounding forest, it was important to design with nature in mind. Concrete and wood were chosen because of their inherent ability to weather over time, blending into the surrounding context, and their ability to emulate the feeling of smooth lake stones and textured tree branches. The sauna uses the transition from stereotomic to tectonic elements to facilitate a sense of spiritual rebirth and a reawakening of the soul. The journey over the water and into the sudatorium recalls the natural spirituality of water, and its ability to reshape and remake the surface of the Earth. This cyclical attribute of water is continued after exiting the sudatorium, where cold water flows down the walls of the open breezeway, splashing and cooling the air and the body. The sense of awakening is highlighted by the exit into an open communal area on the lakeshore, where an icy plunge pool sits to signify the end of the cycle.
