FROM THE EDITOR

CHANGES & CHALLENGES

W

elcome to the Holiday Edition of The Announcer Magazine, Coasties! As our regular readers will know, The Announcer had to take a short break this year while I dealt with the sudden onset of a chronic pain immune condition that saw me lose almost all mobility, as well as greatly affect my ability to work and live. As anyone with a health issue or complication knows, this can take a mental toll on your wellbeing as well as a physical one, and a break was necessary so that we could continue providing the Central Coast with a conscious, community-minded magazine that supports local entrepreneurs, community groups and events and lifestyle on our beautiful Central Coast. With Mental Health Month in October, it seemed like a great time to make a return and we've really hit the ground running going into 2019, with a brand new, fully-functional website launching along with this issue at theannouncer.com.au that provides online reading, an index of all things Central Coast and our amazing events calendar. It also makes it easy for business owners to come on board for future issues. Readers can even subscribe to receive a digital copy of The Announcer in their inbox each quarter! We can't wait to hear what you think so be sure to drop us a line at hello@theannouncer.com.au and give us your feedback! Speaking of Mental Health Month, we have a brilliant interview with the amazing and insightful Nathan Cavaleri as he embarks on his first solo tour with his new record Demons. This is our first interview style article of this type so we hope you really gain some resonance from what Nathan has experienced and expressed through his music and social media. We know it can help a lot of people experiencing similar pressures, and we hope it really shines a light on how we can overcome the darker parts of life.

As the title denotes, it's been a time of changes and challenges for many this year and what we've come to learn here at The Announcer, is that it's these times when our sense of community and togetherness matters most. This magazine could not be possible without the hard work, trust and support of not just our team, but the contributors, entrepreneurs, small business owners, community members and event organisers that put in so much hard work to bring each issue together as well as all the hard work they provide in building our beautiful Coast community into the thriving hub it is fast becoming. We take a look at some amazing businesses and events worthy of your continued support this issue- don't forget our special offer vouchers in the middle! Another change you may have noticed this issue is our use of non-glossy paper for our pages. We have chosen to use recycled paper from Fuji Xerox, who have partnered with one of our suppliers, Officeworks, to launch the Restoring Australia initiative in which Officeworks will plant 2 trees for every 1 used, based on the weight of paper-based products that customers purchase at Officeworks. The Announcer is always looking to reduce our impact on the environment and this initiative was our way of contributing where we can to the reduction of paper waste and deforestation across the globe. This also means you can recycle your copy of The Announcer once you are done! Lastly, we'd like to thank you, our readers, for making the Coast the great place it is to live work and play. We hope you have a safe holiday period and we can't wait to bring you even more of What's New on the Central Coast in 2019!

ENTREPRENEURS

GETTING ON THE GOOGLE-PLEX Kylie Wallace of SMB Academy explains why Google My Business is the new Social Media Focus for Entrepreneurs and Small-to-Medium Business Owners in 2019. If you’re one of the small percentage of business owners in the world currently maxing out on Google My Business, congratulations! You know how incredibly easy it can be to get more eyeballs on your website and people into your shop.

H

owever, It’s a good bet that most business people haven't heard about Google My Business. And that’s a great thing for savvy business owners who want to grow sales and profit. With Google My Business, you’ve got a pipeline of people ready to buy from you because they’re already searching for what you sell. Visual impact is the biggest drawcard for any small business or start-up entrepreneur, and you can’t beat the effectiveness of your results coming up on that first page of google when people are searching for your industry. Getting on Google My Business can increase your chances of showing up in Google’s Local Pack, Local Finder, Google Maps, and organic rankings in general. When a local business qualifies, it can claim this listing on Google and include information about their company, like their address, phone number, business hours, and types of payments accepted. Google has recently added some great features that enhances your Google My Business listing and help to grab viewers’ attention — and can increase how you rank in local search results.

“If you haven’t claimed and verified your Google My Business Listing yet, that’s the first step”, explains Kylie Wallace of SMB Academy, a local organisation working to empower entrepreneurs and small business owners to take their digital and social media marketing to the next level. “SMB Academy teaches businesses how to get started and set up on Google by making sure all the information points are covered, and formulating a marketing strategy to get smaller organisations the Google visibility that is so important to being chosen first by the local target market.”

THE RISE OF THE RENTVESTOR

We Ask Sarah Davis - Buyer's Agent & Property Manager for the Central Coast - to share the latest real estate trends. The property market has seen a growing trend of late: “The Rentvestor” – potential property moguls who do not own the home they live in, but rent instead.

U

sually, this is due to the fact they cannot afford to buy in the area they like or the type of home they prefer but do not want to miss the current market.

Rentvesting is a very smart way to get your foot in the property ownership door before the market moves again. Buyers look in a more affordable area where the rent covers the repayments. This also allows investors to use the property’s return as income to service the loan, strengthening the loan application. Getting into this market and buying a property is the best advice you can get! Regardless of if you could live in it or the home’s area, get into the market & rent it out- even if you are a tenant yourself! “Investing is my forte; I've dealt with thousands of investments over the years and have developed a business model to be an “all in one” agency for purchasing, home improvements & leasing. You may be surprised to know that 90% of the investors I have dealt with are not millionaires… they are the average family; everyday mums and dads or young couples, looking to secure their future by purchasing a second home.” Says Sarah Davis, Buyer’s Agent and Owner of Professional Buyers Agent & Property Management Services in

Toukley. “As well as getting a foot in the door, a benefit that is often pivotal to investors’ decision is the fact that income from rent covers the mortgage repayments on the property itself!” she continues. “I myself specialise in assisting families to reach this goal by choosing the best property for their needs with a secure return and a good tenant. I project-manage all renovations & home improvements; all the way through to leasing & managing the property. Using my equity assessment chart, I am able to give you a detailed assessment of the home and work required to gain your maximum return. I also help you use this equity to purchase another investment and start your own property portfolio.” adds Sarah. Sarah also offers free assessments of properties, so if you are looking to purchase, increase your current equity and renovate, or need a rental return assessment to see if you are capitalising on your return, you should reach out to her business and give her a call. She is happy to answer any questions potential investors may have!

SHARING THE JOURNEY

CONQUERING

demons

As Nathan Cavaleri embarks on his first national solo tour with his new record Demons, culminating in a show at our own Rhythm Hut in Gosford on November 4th, he takes some time to talk to Andrea Rivero of The Announcer Magazine about conquering his own demons to come back to the stage and how he hopes to help others do the same through honest and open dialogue about Mental Health.

Hi Nathan! I started reading your blog and facebook page a little while ago and have really loved what you’ve been doing online for those with anxiety and it’s certainly helping a lot of people out there. Thank you so much for that first of all! Hey, how are you? Aw, that’s good to know! That’s a big part of the purpose behind it and why I started writing about everything; on top of it just being quite therapeutic for me, and it kind of reminds me as I learn this stuff and I test it that it works, and then when I get stuck I've found myself reading a couple of articles that I’ve written and it’s a bit of a realisation of ‘That’s right, I was there’. It’s almost a weird synchronicity that October is Mental health Month and the lead up to your new record Demons and tour, which is kicking off in October, coincides with some pretty important themes around how we deal with and express our own struggles and healing. There was a period of time recently where you felt like you may not play music anymore, and as was expressed in your blogs- you then used a lot of that in the track Demons. Can you give us some insight into that time in your life? During that period I turned away from music, essentially, and I didn’t have any intentions of returning- not that I was happy about that, but because I believed I wouldn’t be able to do it anymore. During those years where I was sort of healing other areas and learning about myself in the dimensions of what I do and how I am, how I carry myself and deal with my emotions; I just randomly started picking up the guitar and writing creatively. As I started to dissolve a lot of the problematic layers, that spark to want to play came back- although not in a career sense at first. I just wanted to play in my bedroom! I got a few cool ideas for songs and started writing and playing in my studio, with no intentions of releasing or playing it live. It took some time to get to that place- I didn’t realise that for so long whenever I wrote something there was always this belief attached to it that it had to be more than just the song it was- it had to be released, how is this going to help my

SHARING THE JOURNEY

career? Will people dig it all of this? It wasn’t just writing for the sake of it. I found myself having to keep reeling myself in until it got to a point where it was just fun again. Nobody was hearing them and I was just playing and enjoying them, and that grew until I was really passionate about this group of songs and I’d also done more work on myself and I'd started opening up- my world started opening up again and I was feeling a lot more confident. I realised ‘I think I want to play again; I’m not sure I want these songs just sitting here.’ There just seemed to be something missing; I really wanted people to hear it and that just started by playing the demo to my family or friends and feeling that excitement and exhilaration of their responses to it. I realised that a big part of why I played music was not just for my own fulfilment but it’s also my way to connect to people as well. That purpose is very similar to what it was as a kid before it became about business and a career and all that went along with it. It became a bit of a healer again in itself, music. When we planned this tour we didn’t even realise it was Mental Health Month so it is a bit synchronous, isn’t it! I've enjoyed talking and sharing about the topic, and it's been a big part of how I’ve got to where I'm at now. Things have changed a lot too- we live in a world now where we have various channels for self-expressionsomething you’ve really taken on board with your journey. You’ve been incredibly open with your story on social media and it’s been amazing to watch and resonate with. Can you tell us a bit more about what inspired this openness and willingness to share with everyone? Two things- writing to me is a bit of an outlet and I found it an exercise in focus, and it helped me to gain clarity in times that were tough. I'm talking journal entries and stuff like that. I randomly started writing stories about my past and sometimes they were musical and sometimes they were things that were a little more personal and I just kind of read it and started asking myself “Maybe, do I want to put this out there?” And I think it was also because of my own frustrations from when I did burn out and I hit that dark place; the lack of information online- there was just so many doom and gloom stories! It actually freaked me out even more. It took what was really a normal situation and made it so much worse because I found myself reading all this stuff about chronic fatigue for example, and how people can be stuck with it for 10 years; and about depression- the extremities of all these conditions and I couldn’t find stories of people-particularly in the artsjust sharing things like ‘OK these are the challenges that happened and this is why I did to overcome them’. That’s kind of why I started writing about it all. I felt like if I had something that I had learned and that it had workedyou know, there's gotta be someone out there that can be helped with that information- so I started putting it out there. The title track Demons touches on a difficult time for you, but also gives a real sense of gratitude, and hope, which is a recurring factor in many people’s journeys towards healing. It also seems to be a main theme through your blogs as well- gratitude seems very important to you.

Can you tell us more about how this acceptance and gratitude helped you come to terms with your experiences? I’m so glad that it translates that way because I think it’s great that everyone's becoming more aware of the challenges mental health can present in our lives but the flip side is the oversharing of the symptoms of suffering and all the pain that it causes. That to me helps, but only to a point. You can get a bit bogged down in how we’re all messed up. If I find that I’m getting towards the end of the article and 99% of this is just me talking about the experiences that were challenging and there's nothing that somebody can learn from it, I try to look at it again. If it stands by itself as a ‘Me too!’ article and people can get relief from that then that’s cool it doesn’t always have to be ‘Pollyanna’ but naturally, it was more about a reflection on the confident self that I was at a time that I was feeling fragile and how all that loss actually taught me what not to take for granted anymore. Even though it writes from a perspective of not having achieved that yet, it still really helps. It shines tough, especially on that track. I think some of the best songs are the ones that express vulnerability and sadness but allow you to realise that ‘this is an emotion; this too will pass’ but without taking away from how important that was at the time. The track itself is a great first look into the album, managing to hit a few styles and mix them along with your own to make something that people are really responding to. The accompanying live video also sets a real intimate mood for the music to flow. Can we expect more of that laid-back style on this upcoming tour or are you going to mix it up a bit? There's a bit of everything! Maybe because of how I’ve grown up and the shows I have done over the years I kind of get a little bit - what’s the word - uneasy if there are too many slow, laid-back songs in a row. I kind of want to rile it up a bit. Demons is a song in itself; the only thing it has in common with the others on the EPis those bluesy riffs and vibe but we definitely take it to other places- we’re gonna groove and rock out a bit as well So there will definitely be some dancing! Yeah for sure! There’s going to be some bangers! Your gig at our local The Rhythm Hut was a key moment for our readers on your blog as we really love what the team there does. Are you excited to return to that amazing community for the last show of the tour? I am excited to come back. I played a bar near my hometown called The Brass Monkey and that was the first headliner back- the very very first one- and a weekend later was The Rhythm Hut gig. I was put onto The Rhythm Hut as a venue by (Australian Musician) Wes Carr, who had gone through similar stuff as me. He was great- he really opened up about his experiences and he said “You know what? You really need to do a gig at The Rhythm Hut because, during a time that I was not good and I was trying to feel comfortable and get back out on stage, The Rhythm Hut was a place I was able to do that.” So he went into The Rhythm Hut- like me- feeling incredibly vulnerable and out-of-sorts- and he said the crew, Lou and the Rhythm Hut in itself has a special place inside him, and for me, it went down the same way.

SHARING THE JOURNEY

I was on a high off the back of The Brass Monkey gig and then I came to that gig and had to deal with some pretty tough emotions, but after that experience, I was riding that natural high for a long time. Not only that, I met and made friends with great people who are now a part of my team. I have lots of special moments with that place. Its the type of venue that you want to play- really what a music place should be- it has so much heart. Again that was a coincidence too- we didn’t plan for that show to be the last of the tour, it just sort of worked out that way so we’re just gonna celebrate the hell out of it on the night! Last of all, after this whole journey and where you’ve come to since those few years ago where you thought you might not play again.. what’s the one thing you’d say to yourself if you could go back and have a quick chat with 2014 you who was in that place? Hmm, that's a big one!- probably ‘You won’t be like this forever’. That's a pretty important thing! Everything changes and just because you feel like this now, it doesn’t mean you’re gonna feel like this in too much time or even in a few hours; and just that in itself, I think, helps to release a lot of that tension and resistance. Any type of emotions and thoughts and stuff like that- if you resist what's going on at that moment, it actually slows the whole process down. Sometimes you’ve just got to let go and the other thing is; I think my challenges presented themselves to really teach me and prepare me for what’s to come. So if you can see those challenges as just literally opportunities to learn instead of battles or threats, that just makes things a lot easier. Also, Have you heard of the concept of 'The Happy Trap'? If you’re shooting for having to be happy and up and excited and motivated and enthused all the time and you consciously end up demonising all our other natural human emotions- fear, sadness and all that- that’s when problems are going to happen. For me, personally, and a lot of my friends as well, making friends with all the emotions and knowing its ok to be sad and angry and feel all those things- that really is truly living fully and embracing the human experience because they exist. If we don’t acknowledge them and we don’t try to respond in the best way they actually get louder and louder until they take over our lives. And drown out the good stuff too. I guess you’re saying we all need that bit of balance. Yeah, exactly!

10

We’re really excited to see this tour and this next record and we know our readers can't wait. Nathan, we’d like to thank you so much for your time and honesty and openness with what you’ve experienced. We can’t wait to rock out and we’ll see you in November. Thanks so much and have an awesome day!

Nathan Cavaleri's Demons Tour kicks off in October and the Central Coast gig will be held at The Rhythm Hut in Gosford on November 4th. COAST COMMUNITY

FOOD (WASTE) FOR THOUGHT Leanne Clarke and Colette Baron of Kincumber Neighbourhood Centre tell us more about Second Bite and how they're helping the local community save food from landfill, as well as some other great things happening at KNC. Tell us more about the Second Bite program KNC is holding. The Second Bite Program runs at Kincumber Neighbourhood Centre from 10:30 AM each Wednesday and it was started to help tackle food waste with the local community. and about 100 people come through our doors within the first half hour each week. It’s an initiative that saves food from landfill by ‘paying it forward’. We receive food from the local Kincumber Coles and Fresko Fruit and ask for a gold coin donation and then that allows us to buy supplementing pantry items from Food Bank which then further gives the community more choices. We don’t receive any funding, but the program is self-sustaining through these donations. A lot of people come because they can’t afford the food but many drop in because of the sustainability aspect as well. We don’t turn anyone away because we don’t want any of that food going into landfill- that’s what we’re really passionate about. So, whatever your reason, we don’t ask questions or means-test or anything like that. Just come along! We’re looking into getting more space, which would mean that we may be able to expand the program into more than one day a week. Coles Kincumber has already said that they will give us food every day if we want it, but it’s just having the space, people-power and everything that goes along with it to be able to facilitate that for the community. In terms of food waste saved, we had a counter and we got to a point where it was just a huge figure, and we actually lost count! Every week for Second Bite we keep figures and when we started adding food bank that number just sky-rocketed to hundreds of kilos of food per week. For those that don’t know, Food Bank also provides food that would have otherwise ended up in landfill as well so it helps even more. Is there a way that other businesses or community members can get involved? Absolutely! We have SPAR Foods at Terrigal that every so often will come and offload a few boxes of food and chocolates and we always welcome other businesses getting involved. We’re also encouraging people who attend to approach their shops and different people in their community so that more people are aware of what we’re doing here. All our staff will also actively have a chat with their own store managers, friends and family to get the word around as much as possible. We’re definitely open to more food donations! Most of our staff are volunteers so we’re really limited in our funding for paid staff, and those of us that are paid will job share positions or take on multiple roles. All the beautiful people you see here, organising Second Bite or Brekkie Club are all volunteers. We couldn’t do it without their generosity!

12

What else is happening at Kincumber Neighbourhood Centre? We have an organic community garden as well as our Boomerang Bags program. So far over 2500 bags have been dispersed in the local community, all made from recycled fabrics by volunteers. It’s just amazing what those girls have done, working out of the neighbourhood centre two days a week to get those bags made for the community. This gives locals a great looking alternative to plastic bags, helping to reduce our impact on the local ecosystem also. There are drives every so often to obtain materials from the community and then they’re washed, cut and screenprinted, then made into the bags. There's a real process line the girls have organised for the program and we’re really proud of the work they’re doing to help their local area. We also have The Brekkie Club, another non-funded program where we feed between 50 and 80 kids from Kincumber High School each morning. Again, this isn’t means-tested and is open to all students. They get a hot breakfast to start their day; there’s always an egg dish, cereals, toast, fruit and juice available. The money for that purely comes from philanthropic sponsorship from Central Coast businesses. The centre also runs a local business network event because we feel like the whole of the community is important. You can’t just look out for one half of the community; you need to bring everybody into it and that ethos runs through the whole centre with everything we do. It isn’t just a place for those that are disadvantaged, it’s a place where everyone is included and people often hire rooms to run classes and workshops. There’s so much that goes on here- we even have businesses that will hire the counselling room and hold job interviews if they themselves haven’t got the space for that. We’ve got gallery space set up for artists and creators, we do programs with the high school such as mentoring as well and the school will often hold assemblies here too. You also operate as a drop-in centre for the community too? Yes, we even have shower facilities that we open up to our homeless communities or those that may not have working showers at home so they can come in and have a hot shower and refresh a bit, make themselves a tea or a coffee and access the Orange Sky Laundry Services. It’s a safe space to drop in for everyone. KNC is a referral and advocacy organisation as well, as all neighbourhood centres are. We want the space to be open to every member of the local community, so be sure to come down and say hello and take a look at what we're building for and with our local community.

THE NEW BREW

A MEDITERRANEAN DELIGHT We take a look at the newest local hotspot for all things Haloumi with Halouminati Headquarters.

T

he Central Coast has grown into a melting pot of amazing food and coffee, with patrons flocking from all around to sample the different tastes our local foodie businesses offer. Paired with the coast’s amazing market and fair culture, the platform for new taste experiences has grown to be something the area is known for. As well as this, our proximity to organic, fresh produce and a growing conscious embracing of vegan and vegetarian lifestyle choices means that there are more options for visitors and locals alike. Like many entrepreneurs, Candice and Stel were inspired by wanting to provide a stable future for their growing family, as well as bring a bit of their own vibe to the local palette. Inspired by Stel’s greek background and their own healthconscious, organic food choices, the couple recognised that there was a lack of Mediterranean-inspired fresh food made with locally-sourced organic ingredients. They wanted to bring people more of one of their main staples and a growing Australian Foodie favourite specifically; the diverse and addictive haloumi.

Haloumi, first made in the island of Cyprus during the Medieval Byzantine period (about 395 - 1191 AD) was relied on as a source of protein in many Cypriot farming villages, and the whole village would join forces to make huge batches together. The couple saw this community aspect as a source of inspiration, and with a growing trend in mobile food becoming increasingly popular, they began frequenting local markets across the coast and Hunter regions with The Haloumi Hut; now a staple amongst local market-goers. With a choice of salads and graze boxes that also catered for vegans and vegetarians, their popularity grew over the last year and they started getting more enquiries about where locals could access haloumi goodness midweek.

“So many people asked us if we had a storefront and around that same time, an excellent opportunity to open up a cafe space in Kincumber came up,” Candice told us. “We had been thinking of ways to expand into a cafe/eatery that could serve customers great food through the week, and give our regulars a place to visit mid-week.” Thus was born Halouminati Headquarters (affectionately known as 2HQ); their new base of operations and source for all things Haloumi, situated in the George Brand complex of Kincumber shopping village. With a menu based off their market favourites, a bit of home thrown in, as well as some amazing baked goods and snack options, this new flavourinspired cafe is a welcome addition to the local community. It doesn’t end there though. “We’re also really passionate about supporting other businesses, so we try to stock local ingredients, such as SASA Bakery Sourdough, which we’ve made available for sale also,” Candice adds. “As well as this, there are plans to host events for local creators and makers once we’re a little more established. We want to bring back the family aspect of this space and have people stopping in for a great coffee or tea and some amazing Mediterranean food. We can’t wait to get to know the locals and have them as obsessed with Haloumi as we are!”

A NEW BIRTH EXPERIENCE

Katie Kempster of Central Coast Holistic Health and Wellbeing explains how she wants to help Central Coast women reclaim their power as mothers and birth in the modern birth space. My experience as a mother, doula and childbirth educator over the last ten years has revealed to me that there is still a tremendous amount of fear and disempowerment that surrounds pregnancy and childbirth.

W

omen are persistently flooded with images of difficult and painful birth scenarios via the media, where birthing mothers are often portrayed as “out of control”, helpless and in need of drugs and doctors to save them from a terrifying ordeal! Family and friends input to new mothers is often worse, where mothers are subject to hearing Aunty Jean’s traumatic experiences of birth and often a strong message to just “take the drugs and do what the doctors say.” As a mother who had the complete opposite experience in my own births, in fact, loved giving birth! I have made it my mission to unravel this perception and through the empowering holistic birth work I do, change the understanding and vibration of childbirth from uncertainty and fear to that of empowerment and love and to ignite a remembrance that as women we are strong and powerful. I view birth as a divine rite of female passage, where maiden becomes mother and where indelible change for the woman and the family occurs on many levels. Knowing this, I believe our society needs to assist women and their birth partners to feel wholly supported, informed and confident as they prepare for not only the birth of their baby but also the birth of themselves as mothers and as new families. So where have we gone wrong in birth? How can we transform the view of childbirth and instil confidence in mothers so that birth can evolve as not something to be feared but something to be claimed and celebrated? At the most basic level for a mother to have the best opportunity to birth comfortably and without intervention, she needs to feel private, safe and undisturbed and the driving force for her desired birthing outcome. Current birthing practices are far from engendering these feelings in birthing women and the over-medicalization of birth is seeing an increase

18

in birth trauma and interventions on a huge scale. In the process, the wisdom that birth is a normal natural physiological process is in danger of being lost. Well, this is where I come in! I have recently opened The Central Coast Holistic Birth and Wellbeing Studio in Copacabana. From this dedicated space I offer a range of services to women and families that support them to feel all at once informed, acknowledged, nourished, celebrated, confident and excited to birth their babies. I know that for mothers to reclaim their power in birth it begins with quality independent childbirth education and this is not just an understanding of the physiology of labour, but education on how to navigate their choices and decisions in pregnancy and especially at the time of their labour. I also convey to parents how important it is to find a primary care provider and greater birth tribe who are in alignment with their goals and vision for birth and affirm to parents the understanding that they are at the centre of their birth experience. My key modality is the Hypnobirthing Australia (TM) program. When a mother and her birth companion are able to approach their birth without fear and with knowledge, good support, and tools for the birth – then their birthing can be a positive and lifeaffirming experience. The combination of self-hypnosis, relaxation, affirmation, visualisation, active birth and breathing techniques as fundamental to the holistic experience of Hypnobirthing Australia (TM) is able to transmute conditioned fears and prepares the mother with confidence to birth in a calm and sovereign way. This is regardless of whether she has chosen to birth in a hospital, at home, in a birthing centre or even if she is having an elective or emergency caesarean. Expectant mums learn to trust in the normal physiological process of birth, in themselves, their bodies and their babies. Birth companions learn how important it is to create and nurture sacred space for their partners so that they can birth feeling safe and supported.

They are empowered to play an integral role in helping their partner to relax at the time of her labour, offering physical touch, positive reinforcement, asking questions of medical caregivers and advocating for their partner. Hypnobirthing Australia parents are also educated to be able to adapt and use critical thinking techniques to make informed choices no matter whatever turn their birthing journey takes. I believe it is every woman’s birthright to be able to birth in the environment and in the manner she chooses and that babies deserve to be born in a space of love this is why I am so passionate about imploring parents to seek out independent childbirth education like this program. The paradigm of fear and disempowerment in birth will only begin to change when women and families inform and educate themselves properly so that they can feel confident to direct the course of their own births, I am privileged to be a part of this shift. Elena Tonetti Vladimirova, leading Conscious birth expert has a poignant message that sums it up well; “When the consciousness of birth shifts from anxiety and fear to love and safety, then we will truly have a chance to reach our greatest potential. We can regain our authentic power, clear the pain of our ancestors from our system, and set the stage for our children to step into their lives as peaceful, empowered guardians of Earth.”

Katie Kempster is a Holistic birthing expert, Hypnobirthing Australia Practitioner, Doula and Energetic healer, cofounder of The Holistic Birth and Parenting Collective and Director of the Central Coast Holistic Birth and Wellbeing Studio where all Hypnobirthing Australia classes are held. You can get in touch with her by turning to our business directory on page 30.

HUT GIG GUIDE

upcoming gigs & events

Sunday 4th November 2018, 6.30pm

NATHAN CAVALERI SUPPORTED BY DYLAN WRIGHT (HOT POTATO BAND)

Much of the country was oblivious to the career Nathan Cavaleri lead beyond prime time Australia. By age 12, he found himself the centre of a bidding war between the labels of Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna. By age 16, he’d toured with B.B. King as his guest, and played at the Kennedy Centre in front of The Clintons with Etta James and Bonnie Raitt. All after winning his battle with Leukaemia. Whether it was signing a CD for Jimmy Page, jamming with Dire Straits Mark Knopfler or being called “The Bomb” by Dr Dre, Nathan viewed the world just as any kid would, with childish naivety. It’s only now that he has experienced the depths of adulthood adversities, is he reflecting on his past accomplishments in awe. In 2010, Nathan’s battle with insomnia and anxiety was witnessed by thousands when he blacked out on a festival stage. Struggling to regain his confidence and drive he stepped away from his art for 4 years Nathan Cavaleri with the expectation of never returning. Upcoming EP, “Demons” is the result of this period, Co-produced with Tony Buchen (Montaine, Mansionair, Asta, The Preatures). As a forerunner, Nathan has been documenting the creative process of the EP through social media and inspires many by exposing the hurdles and feats that have come from his own personal challenges. A swaggering tapestry of psychedelic guitar, hybrid beats, swampy riffs and synths, stepping up to the mic to sing his own stories, Cavaleri says “I allowed the contradiction of my influences to run - Lana Del Ray and J.J.Cale. Ry Cooder and Tame Impala. Mos Def and Rodriquez”. Nathan kicks off the first single “Demons” which in his words, “captures what I felt when comparing the invincible self of the past to the fragile and lost self I had become and the beautiful realisations that can come from anguish”. Catch Nathan Cavaleri as he brings his stories and new songs to stages around the country. More info: http://therhythmhut.com.au/nathan-cavaleri-demons/

Mike Love Tijuana Cartel

Friday 7th December 2018, 6pm

THE RHYTHM HUT CHRISTMAS PARTY feat. TIJUANA CARTEL & THE BIG ILCH The Rhythm Hut is pumped to celebrate their Christmas and end of year party with one of the Coast's fave bands - Tijuana Cartel - back by high demand! Supporting them on the night is Sydney outfit The Big Ilch. Tijuana Cartel’s new album ‘Live at Hotel Brunswick’ (out 14 September 2018) is teeming with the infectious party vibes that characterise their live show. The electronic tour-de-force never fails to ignite a dance floor and this compilation of tunes captures what their live show is all about. Heavy bass and beats underpin virtuosic instrumentation and exotic sounds reminiscent of the Middle East, Morocco and Spain. Experience it for yourself this year as they embark on a massive international tour that encompasses the East and West coast of Australia, Bali, the UK and Germany.

After their debut EP ‘Homeground’ launched early 2018 to a sell out crowd at Sydney’s 505, The Big Ilch has been on a sudden rise in the music scene in Sydney and beyond. The Big Ilch support Tijuana Cartel on this show as part of their latest single tour ‘Groove Constellation’. Not just a space funk / hip hop groove with smooth vocals, and catchy trumpet hooks, 'Groove Constellation' also presents a deeper message of bringing people of all worlds together through song and dance. The concept is musical diversity and multi genre to promote cultural diversity, and all humans coming together in harmony. More info: http://therhythmhut.com.au/tijuana-cartel-the-big-ilch/

WEDDING SEASON

CHANGING UP TRADITIONAL

With wedding season upon us, we take a look at how trends are changing going into 2019.

GOING ORGANIC Food has become a central part of our weddings these days, with couples often choosing signature food that represents them or evokes a sense of sharing and community. Grazing tables are very popular, with many couples opting to keep it light and less complicated than a full 4-course sit-down menu. As our diets and food needs change, vegan and Vegetarian or FODMAP (food intolerant-friendly) options are becoming increasingly popular to cater for a range of tastes. They also look spectacular and often you’ll find guests snapping an Instagram-worthy shot before tucking into good, organic, locally-sought food. European, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food are making a noteworthy appearance as well, reflecting our adventures into different tastes and cultures as our palettes expand and change.

COASTIE PICK: Check out Grazing Vegan Co. based in Umina beach for fresh, great-looking graze tables for your event or The Haloumi Hut, who also cater to vegetarian and vegan tastes, for catering with a Mediterranean twist.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS As our society changes to be more inclusive, tolerant and conscious, even our event planning is reflecting a resurgence of ‘going back to nature’ with venues becoming a key part of what couples want to express and share on their big day. Parklands, Reserves and Seaside spots are increasingly popular, with some weddings even creating their whole theme around gardens, native flora and fauna and the history of particular locations. A dresseddown, playful feel is a common trend, as well as giving everything an almost-throwaway, vintage edge. Many venues now also boast green weddings and weddings that respect the Indigenous history of the land as a major part of the ceremony or reception. Just remember to remain respectful of the environment, land and culture when planning your event.

COASTIE PICK: We love the Mt Penang Gardens and Somersby Garden Estate for wedding venues, but the coast is literally littered with amazing places from the Hawkesbury to Yarramalong and further north. Be sure to check local land council protocol and environmental laws when planning any outdoor event. You can contact National Parks NSW, Central Coast Council and Darkinjung Land Council for more information in these areas.

IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS To carry on the natural, organic and sometimes vintage feel to current wedding trends, many couples are looking to smaller, local makers to craft their perfect table settings, decor and gifts or keepsakes rather than order from huge bridal catalogues from days of old. Using organic and locally-sourced materials is also popular, with wood and recycled items playing a major role (using old suitcases as wishing wells, and carved letters for table settings, for example), as well as lots of natural decor. Native flowers and hand-arranged one-off bouquets are also on-trend. Keep an eye out for changing seasonal palettes based around fauna colour schemes!

COASTIE PICK: Custom Wood Decor is great for bespoke items and wedding decor- check them out on the next page to learn more about how you can make your wedding decor your own. For natural decor, we love artisan flower design like that of locals Piccolo Pear. Be sure to check out their amazing arrangements online!

GOING AGAINST THE GRAIN

WEDDING SEASON

Peter Ralph, Local Maker and Owner of Custom Wood Decor explains why bespoke is the way to go for Wedding Season.

W

eddings are an amazing time, and of course, it’s when we want everything to look and feel perfect so that it evokes that exact feeling of joy and love that our guests gather to celebrate with us on our special day. With wedding season upon us, many couples are looking to bring an element of nature back into their wedding vibe. As trends change towards a more earthy, natural feel, utilising local, artisan products made to order is becoming the norm for wedding decorations. This is where the talents of someone like Peter Ralph of Custom Wood Decor really shine. With his help, your thoughts and themes can come to life with the likes of laser cutting, engraving and UV printing. “There are very few limitations!” he tells us

“For example, your invitations could be engraved bamboo or your “save the date” a colour printed fridge magnet. Decor items such as table place names and table numbers can be as custom as you like, with a choice of font and colour, materials (such as wood or acrylic), or how whether they lay flat or stand up proud. Other table settings such as napkin rings, for example, can be embellished in colour with a graphic silhouette, the name of the person sitting in that place or simply the names of the bride and groom.”

Through his experience in the industry, Peter developed a wealth of ideas to meet everyone’s vision for their bespoke Custom Wood Decor wishlist. Newer trends such as directional signs, photobooth props and “Instagram” photo frames can be paired with classic items such as menus, drinks menus and even table centrepieces, all of which are created to suit wedding party’s the theme of choice. “When the wedding is over it doesn’t stop there,” explains Peter. “Custom Wood Decor also specialises in keepsakes and mementos of your big day. Your prized perfect photos can be printed onto 2 cm thick acrylic blocks with names, date and the place you were married laser etched on the front and USB flash drives can be personalised to hold all the cherished moments of your event for you to keep or give to special family members and friends who attended. You can even create special thank you gifts or cards, personalised to the guests who attended."
