An introductory word from the Rector Welcome to the University of Maribor. With this information guide, we would like to inform you about the University of Maribor and the town of Maribor. Our aim is to support you in your integration into student life in Maribor as well as to provide answers to the most frequent and usual questions that you probably have before or upon your arrival and stay in Maribor at our university. The University of Maribor is a university supporting open access to science and knowledge, internationalisation and knowledge transfer. We put high efforts in providing our international guests, students and scholars the best possible services and support and are very proud that these efforts have been awarded by several institutions, e.g. the national agency. We are active in various mobility programmes, mainly in Erasmus+, CEEPUS, Marie Curie and Jean Monnet. We call this information handbook „Survival Guide“, because it makes your living in Maribor much easier and less stressful. Thus, we advise you to read it carefully as well as keep it at hand. This way, you will be able to find many answers to questions you come across without always having to seek assistance of other people. This Survival Guide is not meant to prevent you from contacting the university’s staff, but to shorten the time of getting answers to predicted and frequently asked questions, so feel free to turn to us in case of need for information, especially additional things that may occur during your stay or special needs that you might have. We dispose of a very good network of student associations and an experienced team to support you and make your adventure at the University of Maribor a pleasant one to remember. UNIVERSITY OF MARIBOR General description The University of Maribor is the second biggest and the second oldest university in Slovenia. Around 13.407 students study at the University of Maribor. It has seventeen faculties which offer undergraduate and postgraduate study programmes. The University of Maribor is a regional developer and our faculties are located not only in the city of Maribor, but also in other parts of Slovenia. Tradition The beginnings of higher education in Maribor date back to the 19th century when in 1859 bishop Anton Martin Slomšek moved the seat of the Lavantine diocese from St. Andraž in Lavantal to Maribor and soon afterwards established a Slovenian seminary. That gave Maribor its first institution of higher education which became an important focal point of Slovenian religious, national, cultural and scientific thought in the Slovenia Štajerska region. The immediate forerunner of the present-day University of Maribor is the Association of Higher Education Institutions in Maribor, which was established in 1961 and joined the first colleges, established in the period between 1959 and 1961. The oldest among them was the School of Economics and Commerce.
Faculties The Higher Education Institution became an important academic centre gradually and in 1975 the University of Maribor was created. Not all of the faculties are located in Maribor. The Faculty of Agriculture and Life Science in located in Hoče, the Faculty of Organizational Science in located in Kranj, the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security is located in Ljubljana, the Faculty of Logistic in Celje and Krško, the Faculty of Energy Technology in Krško and Velenje and the Faculty of Tourism in Brežice. The rest of the faculties are spread all over the city of Maribor.

If you decide to do an Erasmus+ practical placement in Slovenia, you should contact your home HE Institution for information about application procedure etc., but you can also contact your Erasmus+ faculty coordinator or IRO at the University of Maribor for some help with finding placement in Slovenia. Students at the Erasmus+ practical placement are legitimate to subsidized student meals, dormitory etc.

Complete electronic Application Form - it's actually Learning Agreement (Student exchange program: Erasmus+ study). You have to send us our version of Learning Agreement! 3. Choose your study units. Please check if the subject is offered in the right semester - click on the info button before selecting the subject! You can choose subjects from up to 2 different faculties. 4. Print out the fully completed Application Form (Learning Agreement). 5. Obtain signature from Erasmus+ academic coordinator at your home university. A university stamp is also obligatory. 6. Request a Transcript of Records from your home university. The transcript can be in any form including computer print outs from your university registry's office. It must be written in English. 7. We require an assessment of your English language skills (on the level of B1 at least in line with CEFR), so you can either (choose 1 option only): »» send us a document, stating your English language knowledge lev-

Before applying to the call, a student shall check the list of partner institutions, fields and levels of study within the table of bilateral agreements. In line with the published possibilities, a student selects the partner institution (receiving institution) where he or she wishes to pass a part of the regular study obligations.

A student shall check internal procedures for the application for mobility for a study period abroad at the sending home institution.

Since all courses at the University of Maribor are conducted in Slovenian, knowledge of Slovenian is recommended.
Foreign citizens and Slovenians without Slovene citizenship can apply for enrolment in the 1st year of under-graduate study programmes via the e-application in eVŠ: http://portal.evs.gov.si/prijava/?locale=en.

Citizens of the EU countries have the right to education at higher education institutions in the Republic of Slovenia under the same conditions, under the same procedure and under the same deadlines as Slovenian citizens.

* All canndidates need a Slovenian language certificate of level C2, regarding the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). As a fulfilled enrolment condition is considered a taken exam of Slovenian language at final exam (Slovenian matura), certificate of last year the subject was carried out at secondary school, certificate of Slovenian language of level C2 or other equivalent document. Other faculties do not require a Slovene language certificate for enrolment in undergraduate study programmes.

APPLICATION AND ENROLMENT IN POSTGRADUATE STUDY PROGRAMMES Candidates can submit their application for enrollment into postgraduate study programmes to the relevant faculty of University of Maribor from the publishing of the call for application. Should after this period remain free enrolment slots at the study programmes, the candidates can apply in the second application period in September. The exact dates will be published with call for application at the university’s web page not latest than March 31. An application for enrollment must contain an application and proof of fulfilled admission requirements for enrollment into 2nd degree study programmes and 3rd degree study programmes, that are specified in the call for enrollment for an individual study programme. All candidates must submit an electronic application on web portal eVŠ, which can be found at: http://portal.evs. gov.si/prijava/?locale=en

Tuition fees Foreign citizens residing in the Republic of Slovenia who (or their parents/ guardians) are residents and taxable persons in the RS at the time of enrolment, citizens of EU Member States countries, citizens of countries with which the RS has concluded bilateral agreement, are exempted from paying the tuition fee for full time undergraduate and postgraduate master’s study programmes (second-cycle).
Recognition of foreign education for the purpose of further eduation Pursuant to the Act on Assessment and Recognition of Education, schools, other education establishments and higher education institutions are competent for recognition of previously obtained foreign education for the purpose of further education. Recognition of foreign education for the purpose of further education in the Republic of Slovenia is a procedure by which, in the course of enrolment, holders of foreign certificates and diplomas are issued decisions recognizing their right to continue education in the Republic of Slovenia. On the basis of this decision the school shall enroll the holder in the appropriate education programme. Applicants who are holders of foreign certificates and who wish to study at the University of Maribor are able to make an application for recognition of their foreign certificates together with their application for study at eVŠ web portal. STUDYING IN MARIBOR Necessary formalities Visa (non EU citizens) Foreign citizens who are subject to visa requirement are obligated to apply for a visa prior to their entry into Slovenia, at the authorized Slovenian diplomatic mission/consular post. If there is no Slovenian diplomatic mission or consular post in the applicant’s country, an application for a visa may be submitted to the nearest Slovenian diplomatic mission/consular post. A foreign citizen is required to get a visa before entering Slovenia, in accordance with the visa system prescribed by the Slovene government. It can take 2 months to get a visa, so don’t forget to apply on time! A visa is not required for EU citizens.

Residence permit As a student in Slovenia, you are obliged to obtain a residence permit during your stay here. If your application is OK, you will receive a residence permit for the purpose of studying in Slovenia. Students have to apply for a residence permit on-site in Maribor. A residence permit in a Member State for the purpose of studying is mandatory for all foreign students. Within three days of arriving to Maribor, you need to confirm your residence

Non EU countries: It is obligatory for students from non EU countries to have a residence permit/visa before coming to Slovenia - it doesn't matter how long they will study here. Students must apply for a temporary residence permit at the Slovenian embassy, consular or diplomatic mission at home or in the nearest country. After arriving to Maribor, you need to confirm your residence at the Office for Foreigners.

INTERNATIONAL STUDYING IN MARIBOR COLLABORATION Health Insurance All foreign students must have health insurance during their stay in Slovenia. Students from EU countries need a Health Insurance Card and photocopies of it. Students from countries outside the EU must bring a document confirming that they have insurance in their home country, along with their passport. Accommodation Student dormitory We can offer you accommodation in 3 campuses: Gosposvetska, Tyrševa and Quadro, but the beds for Erasmus students in the student dormitories are limited. The rooms are mostly double, kitchen, bathroom and toilets are shared. In the student dorms blankets, pillows and bed-sheets are in the room, but you should bring your own towels. All rooms have an internet connection; you just need your UTP cable. All campuses are located near the centre and offer plenty of opportunities for sport and recreation. On campuses students can use free of charge: fitness facilities, computer centre with computers and free internet access, music room and room for parties. All dorms also have night and day security. You must pay a security deposit before your arrival, which will be refunded after your departure if there is no damage done to your room. You also have to pay the rent for the whole semester in one single instalment. Private accommodation A bit more expensive and comfortable way of staying in Maribor is renting a private room or a flat. You are advised to book a temporary accommodation before your arrival, until you find the best place to live during your studies in Maribor. We suggest that you check the advertisements when you arrive with the help of a Slovene student – your mentor. Renting a private room will cost you from 150 – 250 EUR per month plus expenses.

Subsidized students meals (Students coupons) Slovenia is the only country in Europe with the coupons systems. This means that you can eat a nice student meal in certain restaurants in Maribor or everywhere in Slovenia for 3 EUR on average. The rest of the meal's price is subsidized by the Slovenian Government. The system is digitalized and you have two options: you can use your mobile phone with a Slovenian number (you will be able to get a SIM card from ESN Maribor or mobile operator shops) or you order a special card which costs 15 EUR and you receive it within 5 working days. At the registration you’ll receive an activation number to active your account on www.studentska-prehrana.si. You can check how many coupons you have, where you have already eaten, etc.
Procedure of registration: 1. You get an EMŠO at your faculty. 2. Register on the website www.
studentska-prehrana.si/Pages/News. aspx. Write down the number at
the end of registration.
3. Download the Student Meal App at the App Store or Google Play. 4. Go for a tasty meal in a restaurant.
You can eat 2 meals per day with 4 hours interval between meals. The prices of meals differ from restaurant to restaurant, their location and meals they offer. For some coupons you can get a sandwich or a hamburger and for others a whole meal with soup, main dish, salad and dessert. While in restaurant, call 1808 (it is a free number, so it works also if you don’t have any credit on your mobile phone) and show your ID. If you order a drink or a meal that exceeds the price of the subsidized meal, you need to pay the price difference.

Language support Usually, all courses for Erasmus+ students are held in English. If the classes are in Slovene, professor will help you with consultations, literature and exams, which will be in English. University of Maribor organizes Slovene language course at the beginning of each semester, which is worth 2 ECTS. You will receive all information about language course after your arrival.

The University library The Library Information System of the University of Maribor (KISUM) consists of the University of Maribor Library and 10 faculty libraries and libraries of institutions of higher education. The libraries operate as a unified system; however, they are organizational-administrative units of the faculties. The roles of the KISUM are as follows: organizational (the libraries cooperate through the subject specialists), informative (access to information about library materials), pedagogical (unified organization of library users’ education), bibliographic (unified development and management of the bibliographies of university professors and researchers), archival storage (unified care for security and protection of the materials). The central library‘s building is located in the close of the rector’s offices. Other libraries are placed on the premises of each faculty.
ČUK The multipurpose reading room ČUK is meant for students and other University of Maribor Library users, who use the Library as study room also in the evening hours. ČUK is located on the Library’s ground floor (separated entrance next to the coffee shop) and offers 40 study places. In order to use the ČUK you have to be member of the University of Maribor Library. The ČUK reading room is opened from Monday to Friday between 12.00 and 24.00 and on Saturdays from 12.00 to 18.00.

ERASMUS STUDENT NETWORK MARIBOR Our little piece of Heaven – ESN Maribor Erasmus Student Network or shortly ESN is one of the biggest non-profit interdisciplinary student organisations in Europe, which was founded in 1989. Its aim is to support and develop student exchange and provide an intercultural experience. On the other side, it also offers so called “internationalisation at home” to those students who cannot access a period abroad. We work by the principle “students helping students”. ESN is present in 38 countries and has more than 500 sections all over Europe. There are around 13.500 volunteers who annually help and offer services to 160.000 exchange students. ESN Maribor was established in 2001, as an independent association, which is working hand in hand with the International relations office of the University of Maribor and the National Agency for European programmes of mobility. The mission of ESN Maribor is to help with the integration of Erasmus and other foreign students into the local environment. It is part of the Erasmus Student Network and is composed out of Slovenian student volunteers who were or are going on exchange. As the most active section in Slovenia, we have more than 40 active members, more than 100 mentors and we help around 400-500 exchange students per semester. All our members and buddies are volunteers, who don’t get any salaries or pay any fees.

Buddy system Being a stranger in a foreign land, lost and not knowing anyone is not the best feeling in the world. That’s why we have our buddies.
Who is a buddy? He/she is a Slovenian volunteer student, who "adopts" an exchange student, makes sure he/she feels like at home and helps him/her through the first steps of living in Maribor.
The goal of the buddy system is to help the Erasmus students to establish a social and academic network in Maribor. The Buddy Program is designed especially to introduce Erasmus students to the city, the places to go out and to integrate them in our way of life. Before your arrival, your buddy will answer your questions that concern your well-being in the city and how to reach the city. When you arrive, your buddy will take you to see the city, the places to go out and places to go shopping etc. and he/she can also introduce you to his/her Slovenian friends. He/She will help you with the formalities like residence permit, introduce you food coupons system, help you open a bank account etc.

INTERNATIONAL ERASMUS STUDENT COLLABORATION NETWORK MARIBOR Local Slovenian students (buddies) also know where to find the cheapest beer in the city, where you can eat excellent food or party till the morning. They know which bus to take to visit beautiful parts of the city and where to go bowling or play billiard. Remember, your buddy does this voluntary, meaning that he/she likes to do all these things with you; however, your buddy is not responsible for cleaning up your mess. I FEEL SLOVENIA About the country Slovenia lies in the heart of Europe, where the Alps meet the Mediterranean and the Pannonia Plain meets the Karst. This small green country measures 20,273 km² in area, where the changing landscape is constantly surprising, time and again. You can have one eye on the sea, then look in the other direction and be surrounded by high mountains. Slovenia has numerous sites of special natural interest, with features of all four main areas: the Alps, the Mediterranean, the Karst and the Pannonia Plain. There are many natural attractions all over the country. The diverse plant and animal life and the varied landscapes are attractive all year round. There are also three climatic influences that meet in the country. A harsh Alpine climate prevails in the mountains, the coast has a sub-Mediterranean climate, and the north-east lowlands have a continental climate. MARIBOR Maribor, the capital of the region of Štajerska, is the second largest city in the country but at the same time it is nicely small and green. Its lively throb, superior culture and events, rich wine tradition and the oldest vine in the world, numerous possibilities for entertainment, relaxation and exercise in nature, as well as its reputation of relaxed openness and hospitality also led Maribor to the honorary title of European Capital of Culture 2012 and European Youth Capital 2013. The city of Maribor merges with the wonderful nature of Pohorje’s forests and picturesque wine growing hills in one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Slovenia. A quick trip up Pohorje, a green wonder of the Slovenian mountains that attracts hikers, bikers, adrenaline seekers, as well as lovers of peace to Pohorje’s primeval forest, waterfalls, streams and peat moors. Travelling to Maribor BY PLANE You can fly with low cost flights to our capital Ljubljana or our neighbour countries: Austria (Graz, Klagenfurt, Vienna), Hungary (Budapest), Italy (Venice, Treviso, Trieste), Croatia (Zagreb). LIVING IN MARIBOR Mobility inside Maribor and Slovenia BY BUS There are 21 bus lines in Maribor and they drive more or less often. The citybus is the only means of public transport in Maribor and it is also quite reasonable in price. The cheapest way is to buy a ticket before you take the bus. You can buy a specific number of rides or a monthly card. You can buy the ticket on the bus, with costs 2 EUR or by a permanent card on which you load some money and pay with it. The Student Health Care Centre is around the corner from the dormitory on Tyrševa. Students from the EU countries need a Health Insurance Card and two photocopies of it. Students from countries outside the EU must bring a document confirming that they have insurance in their home country, along with their passports.
Foreign students can arrange their insurance in Slovenia as well, which costs approximately 110 EUR (per month) or they pay for necessary medical treatment. However, we strongly advise obtaining insurance with an insurance company in your home country, which offers arrangements for time spent abroad. Later you may ask for reimbursement of medical expenses in your home country – please check the details at your insurance company.
