I believe everyone deserves to be inspired by their surroundings. That is where my desire to create originates from.
PR E FAC E This portfolio represents a selection of my architectural work over the past six years. These projects were chosen to highlight the diverse scale and approaches throughout my architectural career. I have completed my MTech in Architectural Technology at the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg. My work is driven by a love of simplicity, nuance, craftmanship and materials. I hope you enjoy my work,
Anja Ludwig

URBAN BUILDING
D E SC RIP TI ON Our brief was to design a 3-4 storey building in the historical location Ferreirasdorp, Johannesburg. The rich histor y of the area was used as a catalyst for the design process. This brief encouraged us to challenge the accepted norms of an urban building within the city. The design of the facade drew inspiration from the structure of the mine shaft. Tessellation, angles, tension and steel in terms of materiality were key concepts which were carried through to the design.

ED GE(L AND)SCAPE
A ne w tow n sou t h of Jo h a n n e sb urg
D E SC RIP TI ON This project was informed by a group work project where an urban development framework was developed for Eikenhof, South of Johannesburg. This led me to visit the Klipriviersberg Nature Reser ve which ser ved as precedent for the design. The residential housing design draws from the concept of connecting man to nature, interior and exterior. Metaphors to nature were employed throughout the design scheme in terms of appearance as well as functionality.

PERFORMANCE(SCAPE) O p era Ge m
D E SC RIP TI ON The design was based on the notion of transforming the Gauteng Opera into a landmark. Instead of considering a landmar k as a vertical element I investigated how to invert this idea of a conventional landmark. This was achieved through tapering the floors to frame the old existing opera house. The new proposed building wraps itself around the opera house, poetically protecting the gem which is the opera. To strengthen the idea of creating a landmark the west faรงade is used as a surface to project the opera performance onto, this in turn would form a beacon at night.

THE BR ANDED CIT Y
D E SC RIP TI ON The Branded City work series was an applied investigation of the Sandton precinct with the aim to understand Sandton as a body of a brand. The aim for this work series was to investigate the three framings of architecture: The Body of Architecture The Image of Architecture The Space of Architecture The intent was to understand how these various stages of architecture (body, image and space) are produced and consumed with a focus on my central area of interest – the branded reality of architecture.

LOFTUS VERSVELD STADIUM M DP: Archi tec t u ral Con su m a b l e s
D E SC RIP TI ON The intent of my major design project (MDP) was to study the body of a single brand Absa. Absa became my theoretical site with the aim to develop an understanding of how a brand is produced and consumed. I was interested to use the construct of their brand to start thinking about architecture Architectural Consumables was an applied investigation of the Absa football premiership league at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, an annual temporar y event hosted by Absa. The site was chosen as it presented itself with the highest concentration of active branding and embodied all of Absa’s territorial manifestations.

ARCHITECTURE AS A BR AND T h e ca r icat u re of ‘Af r i ca n a cit y ‘ M DP: Archi tec t u ral Con su m a b l e s
D E SC RIP TI ON The project used Absa as a manifestation of capitalism and a corporate appropriation of a cultural identity and takes principles from Absa’s brand DNA into consideration to critique this thematic. Which was about a false portrayal of an appropriated identity. The intent of the proposition was to ask a set of architectural questions, through a series of false creations, as to how an architecture would perform if it had to embody Absa’s views of an ‘Africancity’ experience. The MDP investigates the relationship of architecture and brand anatomy, which results in a bizarre outcome.

THE CRISIS OF THE CIT Y Big a rchitec t u re an d t h e h um a n sca l e
D E SC RIP TI ON The installations interior is cladded with numerous small photographs that confront the effects of Big Architecture (which relates to bigness a central theme of GSA unit 13 in 2019)relating to the human scale. It investigated how Big Architecture was at the time affecting our daily human social life. These photographs reflect into both mirrors to illustrate the perpetual nature of bigness’s effect that ultimately diminishes the human scale. The project questions where does our architectural profession come into play and how can we engage with bigness and the human scale?

CLIMATE OF CHANGE
Force s o f c l i m ate ch an ge o n site s w it h in Moz a m b iq u e
D E SC RIP TI ON The project deliberately explored programme and site for my architectural project simultaneously. Programme was explored by investigating the workings of a weatherstation which becomes a metaphor for how the architecture for my major design project should perform. Site was explored through the search to map out forces of climate change that are acting on sites within Mozambique. The project: Climate of change questions whether we can produce a weather-station like architecture in climate change that navigates/responds to these forces, which relates to my project interest.

MASH-UP ARCHITECTURE
D E SC RIP TI ON The mash-up architecture constructed within this project attempts to mash-up programme and site with the intent to determine project parameters for the major design project. In this project, programme relates to how the weather-station programmatically performs and the obser vational voids (unobser ved areas of climate) are employed as the sites. The mashups are a series of seemingly bizarre and absurd architectural contraptions, where components come together for the site to operate as a new mechanism.

WEATHER STATION ARCHITECTURE D E SC RIP TI ON The project proposes a weather station architecture that situates itself in the era of rapidly changing climate conditions. The programme refers to weathe r, h o w t o t r a c k i t , c re a t e i t , a n d m o r p h it in relation to tropical cyclones within the context of Mozambique. The main argument shifts the conventional role of architecture as a static built object and proposes that the architecture becomes the climatic environment it produces. Therefore, the edges that have traditionally defined architecture are in flux, similar to the e ve r - s h i f t i n g n a t u re o f we a t h e r.
