Local sights and attractions Anthony’s Shaft – tourist mine Visiting the second largest mercury mine in the world is surely a unique and pleasant experience. Get to know the mysterious underground world in Anthony’s Shaft where you might run into Prekmandlc, the pit dwarf of legend, himself! He used to tease the miners, sometimes showing them the way to rich ore deposits, but mostly just made himself heard in the distant pits while digging ore.

Gewerkenegg Castle The castle was built in the first half of the 16th century as the administrative building of the Idrija Mercury Mine – the second largest mercury mine in the world. Since 1954 it has been the seat of the Municipal Museum of Idrija that has taken care of its renovation during the last twenty years. The entire complex is now a museum exhibition area with the inner courtyard a venue for many summer cultural event in Idrija. You can visit the main permanent exhibitions: Five Centuries of the Mercury Mine and the Town of Idrija as well as Idrija Lace – A History Written in Thread. Divje jezero lake - the Wild Lake The mysterious Karst lake Divje jezero nearby Idrija is one of the gems of Slovenia’s natural heritage. As early as 1967 it was protected as a monument of natural heritage and since 1972 it has been open for visitors, being the first ever outdoor museum in Slovenia.

Zgornja Idrijca Landscape Park Experience the pristine nature around numerous remains of the mining past of the Idrija region. The confluence of the Idrijca and Belca rivers has created a fabulous location for a natural bathing/swimming site Lajšt whereas the surrounding forests offer shelter to a great many animal species.
