Type Specimen Book

By Anis Kuzmis April 10, 2014

This is the type specimen book project that i did for my Graphic Design class. We had 2 weeks to work on this project so it wasn’t too much time to get it perfect so i had a lot of different sketches and mock-ups before i finally got to my final product. I really liked working on this project because it game me an opportunity to do something different, i started out by researching the type face Helvetica. I found a lot of interesting information about it. After i got all the facts that i needed, i started to sketch and search for new and fresh ideas for a brochure. I came up with 3 main ideas. I did mini mock-ups and then i did a full size mock-up of all 3. I choose one that i really liked and went into InDesign to make my final draft. Upon finishing my final draft i realized i didn’t like my idea at all and started all over again. Researched more ideas and found one i really liked. Made a mock-up of it then layed everything out and folded it up to how its supposed to look. Finally went into InDesign and made my finally product. I stuck with this one because its definitely something new and different, i love the way its layed out and how it looks when its all folded up. So follow me as i explain and show the steps i took to complete this project.

I started this project off by doing a lot of research on the type, Helvetica. I found a lot of useful information about the history, about companies that use this type, about different Helvetica family, and difference between Helvetica and other fonts.

After i got all the information that i needed, i started searching for new ideas for brochures...

Once i was done researching different book/brochure ideas i started to mock up some of my own...

I decided to make a final copy of the book design i showed on the previous page.

Once i finished that and printed it out, i didn’t like the final copy at all. So decided to go back an do more research on other creative booklet design. I came across this one and absolutely fell in love with it and decided to try to fold it up exactly the same way.

After hours of perfecting my mock up, i was finally ready to make a final copy in InDesign. I completed the final copy and went to FedEx print store to get it printed out. Had some minor printing issues but after a little tweaking i finally got it perfect. Folded it all up Finished! My final product it ready!

After 2 weeks i came a long way with this project. I learned that your first idea that you come up with isn’t always going to be the best. Fortunately you have the power to change it into something you really like. I worked hard to make the book EXACTLY the way I wanted it. Thank you for following me as i explained exactly how i got to my final project.
