Design Diary

Our early analysis of the functions and role of DAD within Dover revealed a transient movement of activities across a broad scale of art disciplines, which take place throughout the local area with a sense of temporality, much like the entropic shift of people and cultures within Dover. DAD reveals itself as a moving entity with the notion of the Urban Room at its core. The Urban Room simultaneously is all of the activities that DAD may engage with, and also remains as its own entity when no other activities are live. A home for DAD, we believe, should allow for the flexibility required for the spectrum of activities and activities which will take place in DAD’s future, whilst also acting as a clearly identifiable and inviting location for the Urban Room, and encourage public engagement. The site presents a unique opportunity to connect the two sides of Dover; the inward community facing, and the outward, continental facing. Should the site be opened up as public realm, the two sides of Dover could become connected due to the permeable nature of the site. Opening the site up to public use would also allow the existing buildings which frame the site to be interacted with at a more intimate scale from within the site, as opposed to the street which is somewhat dominated by the vehicular underpass entrance. Leaving the site empty and open could have valuable community benefits, however, without agenda this could lead to misuse of the site, and therefore decay of public land. Our aim is to propose an intervention that would not compromise the benefits of the site when open, whilst also giving the site purpose and identity, through the addition of a home for DAD. The location of the proposed home for DAD sits within the centre of the site, and allows both ends of the site to be opened space, as an invitation for the public to enter the home of DAD, and therefore the Urban Room. An open passageway through the ground floor allows the home for DAD, and the Urban Room, to act as a gateway between the international and local community sides of the site. The plan has evolved from a desire to provide flexibility of use whilst controlling the scale of space as not to create a home that is unfeasible, which was coupled with a desire to sit lightly on the site, being mindful of the historical monument below, as well as the desire to invite the public in through a sense of openness across the site. The narrow footprint meant that a traditional would consume much of the plan, so a podium like ascent was introduced through the building, giving each floor several levels and a sense of flexibility and permeability throughout. This allows the building to be used in different ways, such as; a shop, an intimate workshop, studios, screening, informal stages for performance and exhibitions. The building can be one space or many spaces, and at all times an Urban Room. To allow the building to present itself without barriers, it is considered that some supplementary functions will take place in the currently vacant neighbouring building, which also provides further regeneration to the site. The neighbouring buildings, where the facade will contribute to the new courtyard, is imagined as hosting a hospitality space on the ground floor, which can be incorporated into the hosting of DAD events, with the upper floors providing short term accommodation for artists in residence. The theme of flexibility is a key concept to the project, which was derived from the early analysis of the movement of activities which make up DAD. The proposal allows activities to be hosted and travel within the building, in the same way that DAD engages with the local community, whilst at the same time providing an identifiable home for the Urban Room. The site is a part of a scheduled monument and a building on the site should sit lightly as not to affect the Crypt below. Predominately giving the site over as open space not only allows for landscaping, and activities to take place outside, but it also ensures that access to the Crypt is maintained. The structure should also be lightweight as a home for DAD ought to have a strong relationship with the realm of Dover beyond, and it is this entropic relationship between the community, the urban realm, and DAD, that is the identity of the institution, and a permeable home is to act as a symbol of this.

(Week 1): Functions (1th Alternative) Considering the main concept of sharing and connecting to the community, the “Urban room can be counted as the centre of the house. A place were the art family and the society come together. As any home, every space in the house of DAD fits into one of the public, private and transitional realms. However the flexible structure allows each of them to flow into different realms at any required time. In order to great a productive relationship with the community and at the same time grant funding for the house, the “communal garden”, “Pub/Cafe”, “Training spaces” and so on, will be some of linking point to Dover.

(Week 1): Case Study 1 Museum of the Moving Image Hospitality Pavilion, London The application of innovative technology in building design is relatively rare, perhaps because clients’ and contractors’ perceptions of the risks involved are high. Even if architects and engineers are aware of the possibilities that innovation affords, cost and time constraints frequently mitigate against experimentation in construction practice. Very few architectural firms have therefore made consistent efforts to introduce new technology to live projects and thereby test experimental architectural concepts. However, without such projects the possibilities provided by the use of new materials and techniques may never be realised.

(Week 1): Case Study 2 Bianimale Nomadic Museum (New York), 2005, Shigeru Ban This travelling museum houses the prints of the photographer Gregory Colber (his amin topic was the relationship between man and natural realm). Exterior walls consist of a checker-board stack of shipping containers, with the spaces between the containers occupied by sloping sections of white PVC. Metal and paper tube trusses create a classical pediment at the ends of the galleries, supporting the PVC membrane roof. Two rows of thirty-inch-diameter paper tube columns march down the center of the gallery, mirroring the columns of the Arsenale, and articulating the ‘nave’ of the cathedral-like space. A wide pathway of wooden planks (recycled from construction scaffolding) runs between the rows of columns and defines the circulation path, while the remainder of the floor is occupied by a bed river rock.
