What people are saying about previous works by our resident artists, composer Ethan Gans-Morse and poet Tiziana DellaRovere: The Canticle of the Black Madonna, an opera about PTSD and the power of love:

“Contemporary opera is alive in Oregon, and not just that, it’s vital, addressing contemporary issues with determination and compassion.” The Oregonian How Can You Own The Sky? for symphony orchestra and Native Ensemble:

“It provides emotional catharsis on par with the great masterworks of the past. Both the musicians and the audience were deeply touched by the experience.” Martin Majkut, Music Director, The Rogue Valley Symphony Tango of the White Gardenia, a coming-of-age opera about overcoming bullying and choosing love:

“Its messages are loud and clear and humane, and the art is fine enough to carry them”

Peace through Music The Malek Jandali Trio Sunday, October 6, 2019 at 3:00 PM SOU Music Recital Hall, Ashland

Malek Jandali, an award-winning composer and “acclaimed pianist” (BBC WorldNews), presents an afternoon of original compositions inspired by the musical heritage of his native Syria. Mr. Jandali has performed with major orchestras across the world and composed for the Royal Philharmonic, the Cairo Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, and others. His music was described as “a major new addition to the 21st century symphonic literature” by Fanfare Magazine, and as featuring “heart-rending melodies, lush orchestration, clever transitions and creative textures” by American Record Guide. Mr. Jandali’s compositions incorporate ancient melodies from Aleppo, Damascus, and other stops on the Silk Road, echoing UNESCO’s call to preserve and protect the rich cultural heritage of Syria and the Silk Road at a time when it is being eradicated.

Michal Palzewicz

David Rogers

The Malek Jandali Trio comprises Mr. Jandali on piano, joined by Oregon’s own Michal Palzewicz on cello and David Rogers on oud, the Middle Eastern ancestor of the lute. 3
