A purebred Rambouillet ram, Dominic stands as a proud symbol of Angelo State University and the institution’s ties to the region and its people. A domesticated breed originating in Spain over two centuries ago, the Rambouillet are compact, whitewooled sheep with rams that proudly carry long, curving horns. The first Rambouillet ram “Shorty” was donated to the college in 1940 by area rancher D.T. Jones, who had two daughters attending the school. Jones’ generosity typified the West Texas spirit and the support asu has had throughout its history from the people of San Angelo and the surrounding area. 2 | angelo state university track

Reid builds champions A national champion coach and national coach of the year, James Reid has been at the helm of the Angelo State men’s and women’s track and field programs since 1999. His asu tenure, however, began long before that. While Reid oversees the entire asu track and field program, he works specifically with throwers, pole vaulters, hurdlers, 4×400 relay teams and multi-event athletes. Reid has coached his asu teams to numerous top performances in Lone Star
mances; and two All-America relay teams. Aisha Adams was named the ncaa d-ii National Female Field Athlete of the Year. That same year, the Rams finished in the top 10 at the national meet for the 26th time overall and fifth time under Reid. Overall, they garnered four individual All-America certificates and posted two All-America relay performances. With Reid leading the way, asu posted another first in 2011 when Andria Nussey won the women’s first indoor national title in the 800-meters at the ncaa D-II Women’s Indoor National Championships. In all, Reid has coached 10 individual national champions, including Curry Dawson, Adree Lakey, Will Littleton, Lee McCown, Adams, LaTasha Mosley, Amber Miller, LaTisha Burns and Nussey. Reid has also tutored numerous other ncaa d-ii All-Americans, including nine pole vaulters. Other Rams All-Americans include Nathan Gibson, Darrin Session and Noah Dean. Other Rambelles All-Americans include Chrystal Ruiz , Kathy Crowe, Alissa Miller and several others in various relays. He also coached Amanda Welch to the first-ever women’s pole vault competition at the ncaa d-ii national meet in 1999. Other national honors for athletes Reid has coached at asu include numerous competitors at the U.S. National Track and Field Championships. Ruiz competed for the Mexican national team at the 2011
Reid has coached 10 individual national champions. Conference competition. Since Reid took over the program, both the Rams and Rambelles have finished in the top three at every lsc Championship. That includes 11 runner-up finishes for the Rams and six lsc titles for the Rambelles, including four straight from 2009–12. In 2004, Reid led the ’Belles to their first-ever lsc title, snapping the ncaa-record streak of 19 consecutive titles for rival Abilene Christian. It was under Reid’s guidance that the Rambelles in 2010 notched the greatest asu track and field achievement to date, the ncaa Division II Outdoor National Championship. That included two individual and a relay national championships; 12 individual All-America perfor-
Pan Am Games. Amy Bippert-Bohensky and Dawson were inducted into the ncaa d-ii Track and Field Hall of Fame. While guiding his charges to athletic glory, Reid has also received numerous personal accolades. He was twice named ncaa d-ii National Women’s Track and Field Coach of the Year; ncaa d-ii South Central Region Women’s Track and Field Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2009–10; lsc Men’s Track and Field Coach of the Year in 2001; and lsc Women’s Track and Field Coach of the Year in 2003–05 and 2007–12. Despite coming from an impressive track family, Reid did not start out to become a track coach or even a track athlete. He began his tenure at Angelo State in 1986 as a member of the Rams football team, but his career was cut short by an illness in his freshman season. Noble invited him to help with the track team and he has been on the track ever since. A native of Sweeny, Reid’s father, Doug, was the head track coach at Sweeny High School, where he led the Bulldogs to a state championship in 1992 and runner-up finishes in 1993 and 2001, before retiring from coaching. Reid’s older brother, Will, coaches in Harper after coaching at Kerrville Tivy High School and Water Valley High School. Reid received his undergraduate degree from asu in 1991 and his master’s degree in education in 1993. In addition to his duties as head track and field coach, he is asu’s assistant athletic director. He and his wife, Nina, have three children, Jacob, Kyla and J.D. angelo state university track

ASU has ‘Dibs’ on top assistant
In 2010, Dibbern played a pivotal role in the Rambelles winning the program’s first ncaa d-ii Outdoor National Championship.
A former student-athlete and longtime assistant track and field coach at asu, Tom Dibbern has also been the head cross country coach since 2011. He coaches Rams and Rambelles jumpers, javelin throwers, short hurdlers, sprint relay teams and multi-event athletes. While at asu, Dibbern has coached two ncaa Division II national champions, 33 individuals and three relays who achieved All-America status, and 34 athletes and one relay who won Lone Star Conference titles. He has also mentored two of asu’s most decorated multi-event athletes in Aisha Adams and Chrystal Ruiz. Adams is a two-time ncaa d-ii champion and qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials. She has competed in three Thorpe Cups and the Pan American Multi-Event Festival. Ruiz won two gold medals and a silver medal at the 2012 Mexico Olympic Trials. She holds the Mexican national record in the heptathlon (5,666 points) and placed fourth in the event at the 2012 Ibero-American Championships. In 2010, Dibbern played a pivotal role in guiding the Rambelles to their first ncaa d-ii Outdoor National Championship, and was named d-ii Women’s National Assistant Coach of the Year for the
second straight year. In the ’Belles’ run to the national title, Dibbern coached Adams to Regional and National Field Athlete of the Year honors as she set the d-ii national record in the heptathlon on the way to the title. Meanwhile, his first ’Belles cross country team placed second at the lsc Championships and finished eighth at the regional meet. For the asu men in 2010, Dibbern coached two individuals and a sprint relay team to All-America honors, as well as guiding several Rams to lsc titles. He followed that up by being named the 2011 d-ii Men’s Regional Assistant Coach of the Year. In 2009, Dibbern won his first ncaa d-ii National Women’s Track and Field Assistant Coach of the Year award. He coached four Rambelles—Adams, Andria Nussey, Culley Jo Dawson and Adree Lakey—and three Rams—Ryan McWilliams, Tyler Orlando and Chase Moore—to All-America status. Prior to his arrival at asu, Dibbern spent one season as the assistant men’s and women’s track coach at Oklahoma Baptist University. Under his guidance, four obu student-athletes garnered All-America honors, including one naia
national runner-up, 15 qualified for naia national meets, and five new school records were set. He also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Hastings (Neb.) College, where he coached three naia national champions, three national runners-up and 13 All-Americans. Before joining the college ranks, Dibbern spent one season as an assistant at Christoval High School just south of San Angelo, where he coached the long, triple and high jumpers. As a student-athlete, Dibbern competed for the Rams track and field team from 1997–99 and in 2001. He placed as high as third at the lsc Championships in the triple jump, and twice qualified provisionally for the ncaa d-ii National Outdoor Championships. During his prep career, he was a two-time state qualifier in the high jump for Albany High School and placed second at the state meet his senior year. Dibbern holds an Instructor Training Certificate and a Level II Coaching Certificate from U.S.A. Track and Field in the jumps, throws, multi-events, sprints and hurdles. He received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Angelo State in 2001 and his master’s degree in physical education from Hastings College in 2003.
Gabriel goes the extra mile
Under Gabriel’s watchful eye, asu regularly boasts All-LSC selections for both the Rams and Rambelles cross country teams.
One of the most familiar faces in the Angelo State Athletics Department, Gary Gabriel has been associated with the asu track and cross country teams for more than 20 years. A former distance runner for the Rams, Gabriel has been instrumental in the success of both the Rams and Rambelles cross country programs and track distance corps. The Rambelles have won three Lone Star Conference cross country championships while the Rams have finished second twice at the lsc meet and posted eight top-five finishes. Gabriel was honored as part of the lsc Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year in 2006 and 2009, and was named lsc Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1998. Under Gabriel’s watchful eye, asu regularly boasts All-lsc selections for both the Rams and Rambelles cross country teams. Top performances include lsc championships for Dora Davila in 1998 and Damaris Vaughan in 1999, and lsc Freshman of the Year honors for Lane Rutland in 1998. Davila earned All-America honors in 1997,

when she led the ’Belles to a 14th-place finish, and Diego Cordoba represented the Rams at the ncaa national meet in 1994. However, the laundry list of athletes who have thrived under Gabriel’s coaching goes all the way back to Helen O’Sullivan, who garnered cross country All-America honors in 1991–92, and Bobby Lumpkins, who won asu’s first-ever lsc title in the 10,000-meters in 1993. Gabriel’s track All-Americans include Rutland (3,000-meter steeplechase), Vaughn (1,500- and 3,000-meters), Cindy Farris (10,000-meters), Karsten Duncan (3,000-meter steeplechase), Trista McIntyre (1,500-meters) and O’Sullivan (10,000-meters). In 2004, Gabriel helped guide several Rams and ’Belles to cross country success, including All-lsc honors for Trent Joseph and Dustin Hafernick, and all-region honors for Joseph. Joseph also became the first Ram to qualify for the ncaa Cross Country Championships, and was named the lsc Male Academic Runner of the Year for cross country. On the women’s side, Rebecca Graupman won the first of her
back-to-back lsc titles in the 10,000-meters and was named Academic All-lsc. Another highlight of Gabriel’s coaching tenure came in 2010 as the ’Belles cross country team finished as the lsc runner-up and placed eighth at regionals. He was essential in the development of sophomore Emeline Crutcher, who earned All-lsc honors. With asu hosting the 2011 lsc Cross Country Championships, Gabriel guided the Rambelles to a runner-up finish. Crutcher earned All-lsc and All-South Central Region honors, and was named the lsc Academic Runner of the Year. The Rams’ Bryan Barker also picked up All-lsc and all-region honors. A native of Rockwall, Gabriel ran for the Rams from 1981–84. Highlights of his career include a third-place finish in the 1,500-meters in 1982, a fifth-place finish at the lsc Cross Country Championships in 1981 and qualifying for naia nationals. Gabriel received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from asu in 1990. He has two sons, Patrick and Zachary.

Angelo State University student-athletes train in the more than 7,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Junell Center weight room, which is conveniently located next to the LeGrand Sports Complex. Training takes place under the supervision of Kelsey Hite, a former asu student-athlete who knows what it takes to compete with the best in the Lone Star Conference. The two primary goals for all asu athletes participating in strength and conditioning programs are to improve performance and reduce the opportunity for injury. asu adheres to the following guidelines:
• Emphasize Olympic-style exercises for each workout • Develop strength using traditional methods of training, such as bench, squat, deadlift, military, etc. • Develop as much power and speed capability as possible • Develop as much athleticism as possible • Dumbbell and implement training is a priority due to improved balance and stability • Free-weight training is an area of emphasis • Training the core is a priority
The LeGrand Sports Complex is just one of many top-notch athletic facilities on the Angelo State University campus. Formerly called the Multipurpose Sports Complex, the facility was renamed in honor of Dr. Robert and Jean Ann LeGrand in 2008 for their support of asu athletics. The complex has been the host of numerous major track and field events, including the ncaa Division II National Outdoor Championships in 1988, 1991, 1992, 2002 and 2009. It was also the site of the 2005 and 2011 Lone Star Conference Championships. A 400-meter, all-weather track with a 100-meter straightaway is the centerpiece of the complex, which also includes throw-

The weight room is a place where athletes feel a great sense of accomplishment and belonging. We also attempt to promote an upbeat environment in the weight room during training sessions, and encourage our athletes to have a positive attitude when training. Improving adherence to the program is accomplished by evaluating the progress of the players accurately, and providing quantitative feedback to show how we as a team have progressed. We also attempt to educate the athletes on why their workouts are structured as they are, and how certain exercises or exercise principles will eventually improve their athletic performance.

Additional throwing areas were added across Jackson Street from the complex in 1994 to provide a safer environment for the hammer and 35-pound weight competitions. The track was resurfaced in 2009 and a new Daktronics scoreboard was installed at the same time to complement the fully automatic Finish Lynx timing system and the lighting for evening and night-time competition. Next to the complex is the state-ofthe-art Junell Center/Stephens Arena, which includes locker rooms, training facilities and weight-lifting areas that overlook the left curve of the track through panoramic windows.

Championships 2012 LSC Championships
Rambelles grab fourth consecutive Lone Star Conference championship The Angelo State women’s track & field team, by the smallest of margins, won its fourth-straight Lone Star Conference title over Abilene Christian 195.5 to 195 in 2012. The meet came down to the 4×400-meter relay with the Rambelles needing to either beat acu or finish within one spot of the Wildcats. The relay of Keshawna Fisher, Theresa Sue, Lexi Brooks and Jaylen Rodgers set a season best at that point with a 3:46.37 and placed second place behind acu to clinch the crown. Athletic Study Center

The goal of the Athletic Study Center is to act as the primary academic support contact for student-athletes. The center holds the office of the Athletic Academic Coordinator (acc) for easy visibility and reach. The center houses laptop computers, printers, and individual and collaborative work stations.

The acc provides weekly sessions with mentors for studentathletes identified as “at-risk� based on acc and coach recommendations. During the sessions, grade updates and upcoming assignments are discussed. Assignments are reviewed and study plans are implemented if necessary. Tutoring
Free tutoring is available for student-athletes in Angelo State University’s Tutor Center. In addition to having tutors available for nearly every general education class as well as many upper-level classes, specialized tutoring units include the Math lab, Writing Center, Modern Language tutoring, Accounting lab and Supplemental Instruction (si). The si program offers extracurricular peer tutoring groups for traditionally tough classes. Study sessions are led by students who have completed and earned high grades in the courses. si sessions are conducted multiple times throughout the week.
Academic All-American of the Year and NCAA Scholarship Winner Heptathlete Amy Bippert capped off her impressive asu track and field career in 1997 with her selection as the gte/cosida BIBBERT Spring At-Large Track Team Academic First Team, 1996 All-American of First Team, 1997 Spring Academic the Year, the top All-American of the scholastic honor Year, 1997 available to a Kinesiology 3.781 GPA college athlete. She was chosen from a field of more than 200 female athletes in six sports who competed for colleges and universities across the U.S. at the ncaa Division II, ncaa Division III and naia levels.
Also a 1997 ncaa Postgraduate Scholarship winner, Bippert was selected for that honor from a field of applicants in seven sports representing institutions at the ncaa d-ii and d-iii levels. The $5,000 annual scholarship can be applied to graduate studies at any accredited institution of the winner’s selection. A kinesiology major with a 3.78 grade point average, Bippert was the first asu athlete to be named Academic All-American of the Year and the first to win a asu Postgraduate Scholarship. On the track, Bippert was a ninetime All-American for asu and the 1997 ncaa d-ii heptathlon national champion. She led the Rambelles to a sixth-place finish at the 1997 ncaa d-ii national meet, scoring 19 of asu’s 37 points.

Angelo State Track, Field and Cross Country Academic All-Americans Angelo State has a long tradition of excellent track and cross country athletes, who have competed at the ncaa Championships numerous times for the University, earning over 100 All-America certificates in track, field and cross country events. asu track also has a strong tradition of performing at the top levels in the classroom, as evidenced by the number of gte/cosida Academic All-Americans in track, field and cross country events. In fact, one of the top honors accorded to any athlete is the honor of Academic All-American of the Year, awarded to asu’s own Amy Bippert in 1997.

The Angelo State Athletic Foundation is a non-profit 501-c3 organization whose sole mission is to provide support to Angelo State Athletics. A priority for the Athletic Foundation is scholarship funding above what the University provides to ensure asu reaches the maximum equivalencies allowed by ncaa rules. The Athletic Foundation also provides funding in support of recruiting the next generation of Rams and ’Belles, life skills programming for student-athletes, academic support for student-athletes, and other initiatives important to the welfare of student-athletes and the success of athletic teams.

The nine members of the asu Rambelles track and field team that headed to the ncaa Division II National Track and Field Championships in Charlotte, N.C., returned home with the program’s first national championship trophy. By capturing 50 points in their final six events, the Rambelles ran away with the title, beating second place finisher and defending champion Lincoln University by 14 points, 87-73. And, it was a total team effort. Senior Aisha “Ice” Adams scored points in all six events she entered, including an individual national championship in the heptathlon. Senior Chrystal Ruiz scored points in multiple events, senior Andria Nussey rebounded from a poor showing in the long jump to set a new school record and place second in the 800-meters, and senior Celethia Byrd won an individual national championship in the 400-meter dash and finished third in the 200-meter dash, a result that clinched the title for asu. “I just said, ‘Thank you Lord,’” Byrd said after the 200-meters. “That is all that was running through my mind. I was very happy, and to hear my time was a new personal record, it made me feel good. Most of all, I may not have to run the mile relay. That’s awesome!” Byrd’s points from the 200-meters put the Rambelles ahead by 12 points with only the 4×400-meter (mile) relay left to run. That meant no team could catch them, regardless of what they did in that final race. What they did, though, was put their final stamp on the national meet by winning the relay in a school record 3:38.88 with Byrd on the track running the anchor leg. The result had coaches James Reid, Tom Dibbern and Gary Gabriel yelling, fist-pumping and high-fiving in the stands. “That is unbelievable,” Dibbern said. “When it’s going right, it’s going right.” “This is a great feeling,” he added. “It hurt real bad last year when we lost it, but this has totally erased it. Coaching-wise, I’ve never had a feeling like this. It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had coaching. It’s truly worth it.” After confirming that his team had clinched the title, Reid finally calmed down enough to begin the task of texting the great news to just about everyone he knows. “I asked Coach Dibbern about nine times if he was sure before I called anybody,” Reid said. “I called my wife and told her because they have been following it on the Internet. I called my parents and I called Coach (Kathleen) Brasfield, Coach (David) Noble and a bunch of people who have had a lot of influence on me. It’s still a little surreal right now.” “I just can’t say enough about the girls,” he added. “What helped us was nine young ladies busting their butts for three days straight and coming into this year with a goal and wanting to do it. Even over the last three days when we’ve had not such good things happen,
they have been resilient, not lost sight of the goal and came up big time after time. I just can’t say enough about them.” Meanwhile, the Rams were also in a battle to achieve their goal of finishing in the top 10 at the national meet. Their day started with junior Tyler Orlando and sophomore Jacob McDonald placing third and seventh in the javelin, gaining eight points for the team and All-America status for themselves. In the discus, junior Wade Goode also garnered All-America status by finishing eighth and earning a point for his team. The 4×100-meter relay team of James Howell, Ryan Adkins, Brian Holik and Nick Smith became All-Americans with a sixth-place finish that picked up three points. Howell also set a new school record with a 45.95 in the 400-meters that was good enough for third place and six valuable points. The Rams also capped off their national meet in style with a secondplace finish in the 4×400-meter relay in 3:06.44, the second-fastest time in school history. That race finally let junior Terence Holland showcase his talents as, due to weather delays, he was forced to wait until the final event of the meet to get on the track. “With all that waiting, something good was bound to happen,” Holland said. “I was ready to go last night in the rain, but had to keep the animal in the cage. This was my one shot and I wanted to make it my best one. Second-fastest time in school history, you can’t get mad about that.” The final race also provided another shot at success for freshman Isidro Garcia, who missed qualifying for the individual 400-meters by mere hundredths of a second. Now, he is also an All-American. “That is a great way to finish off the year,” he said. “I’m glad that we came out and competed to the best of our ability. I went into the race wanting to run a :46, but skipped right past that and ran a :45.7 and that is a big jump for me. Second place in the nation is really something big.” When the dust had settled, the Rams had also achieved their goal as they finished tied for ninth place with 26 points. “I’m proud of our girls,” Garcia said, “and I’m glad they are going to celebrate a national championship. But, top 10 in the nation is also something big for the guys and we are really glad to have gotten that high up.” “I think we are going to get a lot of coverage because we won the championship with the women,” Reid said. “But, I don’t want to take anything away from the men because they had a great meet. There has only been a few times when both men’s and women’s teams have finished in the top 10 at a national meet, and that is something we wanted to do coming in.” “For the guys to do it the way they did it by running that great mile relay was incredible,” he added. “They put it together and made it happen. It’s awesome, totally awesome.”
