project title_Dynamism concept// The term interpreted as a playful seduction of voids and solids in order to create motion. A dynamic composition is achieved by the strategic exploration of the materials in use// paper, basswood & plaster.

course_description// Introduction to basic design elements, principles and concerns, focusing on spatial organization and sequence. Problem solving, analytical models and simple projects of program implementation become tools to understand underlying compositional principles.

course_description//Urban|rural contexts are analyzed through abstract and on-site exercises as an introduction to the complexities inherent to architecture and place. Precedents are examined in order to link programmatic concerns and formal composition, in order to integrate them in design.

It is insufficient for architecture today to directly implement an existing building typology; it instead requires architects to carefully examine the whole area with new interventions and programmatic typologies.*

project title_Hotel Boutique concept//“Condado is an oceanfront, tree-lined pedestrian oriented community in Santurce.” The limit between the public and private space is explored in Ashford Avenue from both the avenue itself and its perpendicular streets which serve as dead-end entrances to the beach. Each end of the perpendicular arteries was interpreted with a term according to what is perceived in the space from the pedestrian point of view. Terms such as: announcement, define and expose are used to develop the proposal. location//Ashford Avenue, Condado, Santurce, Puerto Rico.

course_description// Projects of intermediate complexity are related to the larger backdrop of culture and themes related to identity politics. The appropriateness of concept to form and context is emphasized, as well as the architect’s larger responsibilities to his/her work in society.

The interrelation of private and public spaces is explored in order to provide a variety of spatial definitions. location//Plata Prieta, Vieques, Puerto Rico.

36

project title_Agua Sol & Sereno Scene Production HUB concept//The layering of urban conditions: context, limits, rhythm, was studied in Ponce de León Avenue and San Agustín Street. The transversal Matías Ledesma street that connects both the avenue and the street is interpreted as a pause and treated as a balance in order to intervene in the Corner Bar building. The intervention includes the creation of two main artistic zones, each with its own attributions. One, has more relation with the activity in Ponce de León Ave., and the other one has a more personal connection with the Puerta de Tierra community’s main artery: San Agustín Street. location//Puerta de Tierra, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

course_description// Design methods are highlighted, exploring techniques used to articulate the components of an architectural project. Problemsolving is confronted from different angles of understanding in an introspective, critical manner.

project title_FDR Housing & Urban Garden concept//Measured drawings of Franklin Delano Roosevelt School were produced in order to establish a conservation project. In this case, the intervention’s main purpose includes the continuation of the public space in order to connect the school’s front plaza with the community in the back. The classrooms are conserved in order to create duplex housing. Modules were developed in order to maximize the use of space and provide a connection with the public space that accommodates an urban garden. location//Arecibo, Puerto Rico.

housing description// Housing and urbanism are confronted in a term-long project. Typological housing precedents and social issues are framed against the economic and political background which both fosters and hinders housing.

project title_Tolosa Convention Center concept//Study abroad project in collaboration with architecture student Diana G. Serrano Miranda. Several intervention strategies were explored in a charrette with National University of La Plata architecture students to later develop a formal proposal for the site. The main idea of the intervention is to treat the urban space as a portrait for the convention center, focusing on it as the main event. location//La Plata, Argentina.

course_description// Urban design is considered from a two-fold approach: one, the ecologically minded posture; the other, based on historic and prevalent urban design ideas both to be expanded and contested in studio. Presentday urban problems in Latin America are customarily addressed.

07_grafting architecture

professors//ARCH5010 Jorge Rigau, 5020-30 Fernando Lugo Agudo

STEAM Center concept//STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) studied as a holistic model integrated in education in order to nourish investigation, debates and deliberation processes seeks to expand STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), 21st century most used education system. The capstone project seeks to recognize STEAM from an architectural point of view: understanding how multidisciplinary collaboration and the exploration of creative methods via artistic expressions, generates the necessity to reconfigure both space and formal approaches in the educational facilities. location//San GermĂĄn, Puerto Rico.

Theoricalframework// Horticulture as a metaphor sets fundamental understandings of grafting and how it serves as an approach in architecture. Grafting refers to the union of a part of a plant with another one, in different ways: natural, inverse, or transversal. When united through any of these methods, the stem’s cambium layers are responsible for the exchange of fluids and nutrients occurs. As a result, grafting is interpreted as circulation and structure in architecture, both being routes of exchange.

course_description// At the first phase of the Capstone Design Project, parameters, objectives and methodologies to be pursued are defined. Capstone Design culminates with attention to the technical resolution of the project and its (re)presentation. This all-inclusive final project mirrors the student’s acquired skills, maturity and expanded professional outlook.

concept//Grafting architecture as the main event is developed throughout the union of the existing student center to the proposal: STEAM Center. The James Beverley Building, strategically position in the campus serves as a connection to the existing STEM programs in the campus. Along with the incorporation of arts and engineering to the proposal, the public space is developed. The capstone project positions the public space as the main event, it plays an essential role in grafting the different components of the intervention area. Both the STEAM Center and the public space, take grafting to its maximum expression and provide an understanding of how an education concept shapes to spaces.
