The Mama Tree also organises community events such as markets, social functions and now, the business expo. Founder iShbel Compagnoni explains: “There are so many talented and inspiring ‘mumpreneurs’ within this community. The Mama Tree network allows these mums to promote their creative talents to each other. The aim of this expo is to introduce these businesses to the wider community.” The Business Expo will feature a variety of stalls from garden design, cooking and art to photography, legal services and web design. There will be free talks and demonstrations plus everyone who attends the event will receive a showbag containing discount vouchers and special offers for the products and services of the Mama Tree businesses. ‘The Mama Tree is a fantastic network for local mums and really helped me get my business off the ground,’ says Lucy Lee of The Art Box,

who had sell-out bookings for her children’s art workshops after promoting them on the Mama Tree Facebook page. Local mums, Jane Jukes and Bec Marshall, are looking forward to promoting their community cooking and recipe swapping initiative, Megabatch!, at the business expo. Members cook an extra portion of a meal and swap it with another participating family. ‘You get a night off cooking and a chance to enjoy a wholesome home-cooked meal... Like takeaway but way better!’ says Jane. The Helensburgh Workers Club has generously offered to host the event with the aim of raising the Club’s profile within the community. General Manager Andrew Stuart says, “Many people are unaware that the Workers Club is a family friendly place with great bistro meals and indoor and outdoor play areas for kids. The business expo is a great initiative and a good opportunity for folks to visit the club and enjoy our facilities. There will be some extra entertainment for the kids in the indoor play area on the day. We’re also looking forward to the Mama Tree taking part in our Christmas in July winter markets.’ If you are a local business and are interested in taking part in the Mama Tree Business Expo please see below for more details. NEWS X Marks the Spot By Angela Fagerström Residents of Tunnel Road and Foster Streets, north Helensburgh are upset by a development consent issued by Wollongong City Council (WCC) that will result in the felling of six trees, two of these magnificent Blackbutt trees, each being over 20 metres high, with 15 metre wide canopies. The 2434m² block of land (on Tunnel Road) with one existing house will be divided into four blocks, with three additional homes to be built on the new subdivision. A council representative confirmed 20 letters were sent notifying nearby residents of the development application and exhibition period. Eight objections were lodged during the exhibition period. Yet some nearby residents claim they were unaware of the development until the trees were marked with ‘x’ marks to indicate which ones were set for removal. The environmental assessment lodged with the DA, refers to an arborist’s report which states tree number two (Blackbutt) is “in decline due

www.heritagecellers.com.au

to previously placed soil fill over the root zone and bark/borer damage”. Neighbours believe it was the developer’s contractors who placed the fill on the base of the blackbutt tree, causing its “decline” (prior to consent). The environmental assessment stated: “Residential development of this nature is expected in the area and the proposed subdivision will not adversely impact on the privacy of occupants or views to and from the site”. Similar developments are anticipated for blocks in Foster Street, Helensburgh. Council’s development application notification policy is available on their website. However, you can keep up with all development applications made within a two kilometre radius of your home by subscribing to an email alert at www. planningalerts.org.au. PlanningAlerts is a free service which searches as many planning authority websites as it can find and emails you details of applications near you. The aim of this service is to enable shared scrutiny of what is being built (and knocked down) in peoples’ communities. OPINION Opinion: The Future of Neighbourhood Forums By Angela Fagerström After running Neighbourhood Forums for over 20 years, Wollongong City Council (WCC) has changed how Neighbourhood Forums operate. Council staff will now only attend if requested to speak on certain issues or present particular projects. I can’t blame them really. I have seen Council staff subjected to unsavoury behaviour and verbal abuse at our local forum in the past. No doubt this has happened elsewhere. A core group have long supported the forums and some of the input has genuinely been to a high standard. Neighbourhood Forum 1 (NF 1) has helped review and modify major developments in Helensburgh, such as the apartment buildings in the town centre, and facilities at the Landcom estate. This core group comprises 12 – 20 regular attendees. The forums aim to provide fair and safe review of major developments before council, as well as providing a means of community information – they are not meant to directly promote the private interests of individuals. Meanwhile, the majority of residents are at work or at home helping with homework, cooking dinner and doing normal busy people things with their majority voice going unheard. The forums do need an overhaul. The election of NF 1 positions last year left questions unanswered.

HARDWARE & BUILDING TRADERS

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD In the last two months, we have seen a commercial interest sneak in to claim the email addresses for their own use from submissions to Council. This issue has since been resolved, yet had a Council Officer been collecting your submissions, this information would have not been in public hands. The forums are not perfect, but without Council governance they are exposed to greater failures. Council must either back them (but look at innovative ways to expand their reach, improve the organisation of meetings and agendas) or disband them altogether. How about holding a daytime forum for parents of young children? Perhaps this could be linked to a regularly organised playgroup; these often already meet at Council-run facilities. Perhaps it would be effective to have one forum in Ward 1 instead of the current three, alternating meetings between the North (Helensburgh) and South (Thirroul),. Not enough is known about the proposed annual “Community Dialogues” set to replace in part, Council interaction with the forums and a lot can happen in a year. Until then, Council needs more community input not less, and forums remain part of a wider picture of representative government in our society. Neighbourhood Forum 1 meets at 7 pm on the second Wednesday of each month at Helensburgh Community Centre. For more information you can contact Council’s Customer Service on (02) 4227 7111 or visit Council’s website.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR All letters must carry the sender’s home address and a contact number for verification. Please limit letters to 300 words. By submitting your letter for publication, you agree that we may edit the letter for legal, space or other reasonable reasons. Editor. Dear Editor, I am writing because I am concerned property developers are threatening the quiet, bush setting of North Helensburgh. North Helensburgh is characterised by large blocks of lands, bush style setting, wildlife and home to retirees and young families. Recently the aggressive development of land on 41 Tunnel Road has left local residents shocked. A driveway was dug out before permission had been granted by council. Coral Trees were taken down and soil negligently left on the root zone of Blackbutt gum trees. The developers were then able to conveniently use this as an argument for the need to remove eight (revised to six) of these trees.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD The DA has since been passed by Wollongong Council with minor modifications and we have heard that work will be carried out in the next couple of weeks. Our major concerns are about destruction of habitat for the varied wildlife in the area. One of the greatest threats to wildlife in the area is loss of habitat. Although the report describes the area as “urban, North Helensburgh is closely surrounded by Royal National Park and there is a diverse ecosystem found in the area of Foster Street and Tunnel Road. This road has no pedestrian path, the grass verge forces pedestrians to walk on the road. There are no street lamps and as it is on-route to the station, regularly commuters who are late for their train drive too quickly down this street in the darkness of the early morning or evening. We are concerned about the safety of the school children and other people who use this route to go to the train station. I am also concerned about the precedent which has been set for higher density housing in this area. North Helensburgh has only one access road into Helensburgh and beyond. There are many blocks of land which are being targeted for subdivision, this would present a higher risk to residents in the event of an emergency evacuation and would bring many more cars into the area and with it traffic delays on a daily basis. We appreciate the need for more housing in the area, but if families want to move here for the bush lifestyle, it is ironic that they are removing the bush to attain it. Furthermore how can residents stand up to property developers who know the weaknesses of council, where DA notification is only sent to a couple of neighbouring properties, with only a tiny window for objections to be heard? The clear winners are the property developers whose only aim is to make short term gain at the expense of a long term loss for local residents. This property development has brought local residents together and has made us question what we really want from our local area. I hope that residents reading this will be motivated to take a more active role in voicing their concerns with the council and their community. Name withheld

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor, I have been looking at the Community Participation Charter principles in the white paper released by the Department of Planning for A New Planning System for NSW. In light of what the white paper is seeking for increased engagement, I was shocked by the resolution of Council at their meeting on Monday 8 April 2013 to effectively withdraw support for Neighbourhood Forums. This motion was moved by a councillor who works for an organisation that is all about furthering community consultation under the name of public participation. I quote from the Council business papers from Monday 8 April: “This report contributes to the Wollongong 2022 Objective Residents are able to have their say through increased engagement opportunities and take an active role in decisions that affect our city under the Community Goal We are a connected and engaged community.” How is withdrawing support for Neighbourhood Forums an increase in engagement opportunities? I attended a meeting of Community Engagement Staff and Neighbourhood Forum (NF) Convenors on Monday night, 15 April 2013, where I learned that Council only has 3.5

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD full-time equivalent staff in the Engagement team. At this meeting, the NF representatives were unanimous in their support for Model 1 and that the withdrawal of Council Officers from NFs was sending a clear message to the community that Council does not want community consultation. Harold Hanson was probably right: “DAD” Decide, Announce, Defend. There are numerous examples of Council wasting money due to not communicating with the community/local residents and then having to redo a project, change a project or withdraw altogether. One example is the cost of establishing a worksite in Henry Halloran Park (Stanwell Tops), surveying the park, pegging out in the park then removing the worksite and removing the pegging because—and this was confirmed by the Council Publicily Officer at an NF1 meeting— Council had not consulted with the community/residents despite residents bordering the park having been talking with other Council Officers about stormwater drainage for over two years. How much did that cost? More than the $17,000 “saved” by removing Council Officers from NFs? Less than 0.02 % of the $88,000,000 staff costs of Council and less than a quarter of the $6,000 per councillor that Council is about to spend on councillors doing the Company Directors course. This clearly shows how much Council thinks of the community. Warwick Erwin Stanwell Tops Resident & Co-Convenor NF1

Darkes Forest Update: Fines Are Up By Angela Fagerström Residents of Darkes Forest, Apex Energy and the Stop CSG Illawarra group are still awaiting Planning and Assessment Commission’s (PAC) determination on D191/12 - Apex Exploration Drilling Project Modification 2. PAC held a Helensburgh meeting in February of this year to hear views on the Department of Planning and Infrastructure’s recommendation to approve the proposal subject to conditions, before the Commission makes a decision on the application. Property owners near the contentious AI19 proposed drill site believe PAC will release their determination soon, noting the Sydney Special Catchment Authority (SCA) signs warning trespasses have been recently updated. With seemingly no notice via the SCA website or Ministerial notes, in one fell swoop, the maximum fine for trespassing in the SCA special area jumped by $33,000 making it now an offence worth up to $44,000.

Karen Dinsdale-Whitby of the Darkes Forest Residents Group said “it would be nice to think this has been done to protect the special areas, but my fear is this will make it easier to deter or prosecute people who want to protect the area if or when drilling starts”. At the time of print no determination had been released by Planning and Assessment Commission. For more information visit www. pac.nsw.gov.au/projects and search D191/12.

Sole Traveller After forcing herself through a thick cloud of depression, Helensburgh resident Ursula Stroh spotted a bill board advertising a yacht race called Clipper Round the World, while travelling to work one morning. The photo was of a large yacht surging through the waves with the tagline: “Raced by people like you.” As she excitedly googled the event, she learned that the race is open to participants with all levels of experience—even if they had never stepped on a boat before, and can join the voyage and circumnavigate in an eleven month-long marathon. “I don’t have much sailing experience, but the little I did have inspired a passion I wanted to explore further,” Stroh says. “The idea of an adventure that would take me into a completely different life and challenge me in every possible way, sparked a new joie de vivre, strength and belief in myself I knew I had to reignite.” Stroh works as a Brand and Communication manager for IBM, and will work in the company’s London office for a month after undergoing a four week intensive training program and before the race leaves late August. She will join a crew of 20 on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht - one of a brand new fleet of 12. Over a year the team from all over the world will complete 15 races, covering 40,000 sea miles and stopping in 13 countries. “Being in my late forties I realise that this is not going to be a walk in the park, and that I will often wonder why on earth I decided to test my will power and adventurous spirit to such extremes, but I love this quote by Mark Twain: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” “My life hasn’t turned out exactly the way I’d planned, but I’m determined to focus on all the positive things I do have,” she says. “Through my odyssey I hope to inspire others to realise that one is never too old to make the best of the way life has worked out for them.” You can follow her journey, and maybe even sponsor Ursula for a few sea miles, through her blog: http://www.soletraveller.com.au/ 10 May 2013 Helensburgh & District Herald

Symbio General Manager, Matthew Radnidge digs deep for Leukaemia

Symbio Wildlife Park has had the pleasure of delivering memorable experiences to families in Helensburgh for almost 40 years. The popular park has been owned by the Radnidge family for the past 12 years and during this time there have been many changes and improvements. There are a lot of things that as a community we don’t know about Symbio Wildlife Park... We have all been there and enjoyed the experience but what we don’t know is everything they are involved with for conservation and the community. In coming months the Helensburgh & District Herald will run regular features on Symbio Wildlife Park, providing ‘behind the scene’ reports and special news for locals. Over the next 14 months Symbio Wildlife Park is undergoing a major transformation with the development and introduction of new species to the wildlife family. “The development is part of our 10 year plan which we have been able to fast-track, thanks to a successful funding grant application to the Australian Government” said John Radnidge, Symbio Wildlife Park Managing Director. By June 2014 Symbio Wildlife Park will be home to; a new Koala breeding sanctuary, one of the best reptile houses in Australia, Lions and Cheetah and a primate island for Ringtail Lemur.

This month Symbio Wildlife Park is playing host to a very special fundraising event coordinated by Angels at Work to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. On Friday the 10th of May, Symbio will be joined by fellow members of the Northern Illawarra Chamber of Commerce to host a ‘thank you’ dinner for the hard working Angels. John said “I am thrilled by the generous offer made by Pauline Lacelles-Smith of the Otford Pantry and Ronda Collins of the Centennial Hotel to cater for the Angels at Work dinner”. The community can also get involved and help the Angels at Work by attending the community day on Saturday 11th of May. On this day Symbio will donate $1 from every Symbio entry ticket sold to Angels at Work (for the Leukaemia Foundation) and General Manager, Matt Radnidge will put in an additional $1 – personally matching money raised by the park dollar for dollar! Symbio invites locals (and anyone you can bring along for the day) to come and join them and help raise funds for this great cause! SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL BUSINESS Megabatch! 2508 “Benefiting you and your community” Would you like a night off from cooking? When was the last time someone made a meal just for you? Are you interested in a way to put some fun and enjoyment back into preparing and eating family meals? Like many parents, Bec Marshall and Jane Jukes cook for their families every night. “I like to cook but it does become a chore, day in, day out” say Jane. “With small children at home the logistics of eating out is quite the mission, so we very rarely do it” says Bec. The two locals have created a community initiative which enables its participants to swap meals, thereby eliminating the need to cook one night a week. Members provide one another with a delicious home-cooked meal to enjoy. “Like a takeaway, but much better!” says Jane. Megabatch! is all about convenience, simplicity and flexibility. You can cook for me on Monday, I’ll cook for you on Wednesday, whatever suits you best.

14 May 2013 Helensburgh & District Herald

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD There are no mass communal cooking sessions or strict deadlines; participants simply cook two extra adult-sized portions of a meal and swap it with another member. Megabatch! also gives its members the opportunity to get more creative in the kitchen, to broaden their cooking horizons and to put a little extra love into their meals. Recipes are then available online for members to try out if a particular meal has been a winner with their family. Meals aren’t restricted to evening dinners; they can be a batch of muffins, a cake, soup, salad or any other special meal from your repertoire. This is a chance to share your culinary skills and home-cooked goodness with your local community whilst receiving the same service in return. The next 6 week swap event begins on June 3, 2013. If you would like to take part or are interested in receiving some more information, please email Jane or Bec at megabatch@hotmail. com. The girls will answer any questions and send you out an information pack.

This is now Trent and Tammy Madsen’s second, after successfully operating a club of the same name in Cronulla for over nine years. “When you start training with us you are welcomed into a family focused club” said Trent, “Our members often get together for more than just training – it is a great group to be a part of.” Trent explained the core values of the school as; martial ability, cultural items, ethical and lifestyle items, with an underlying cultural emphasis on safety. “Safety is at the forefront of everything we do, it’s embedded in the way we train” said Trent. “Across all our disciplines we practise before we apply any technique and we apply gently”. Kinetic Martial Arts are a true community club in the sense that the academic success of the group’s youngsters is just as important as their progression in technique and martial ability.

“We invest time in our young members, when they are achieving academically this is just as significant to us as if they had competed in martial arts on a national level – discipline and focus benefit all aspects of a student’s life”. Kinetic Martial Arts are particularly interested in newcomers joining the Brazilian Ju Jitsu adult training group. Wendy Finds Her ‘Wings’ Local Estate Agent, Stanwell Park resident and Member of the Lawrence Hargrave Centre Inc, Wendy Lepre of Bevans has found her ‘wings’. Always at the forefront of market movements, Bevans Real Estate have taken an innovative step in creating a local ‘hub’ at their Thirroul office, allowing agents like Wendy to be more active in the field, removing the need to service an office and ultimately allowing them to better service their customers. “This change will allow me to spend more time talking to home buyers and sellers who want an ‘out of the box’ result” said Wendy. Bevans now have a full-time member of staff in Thirroul dedicated purely to internet marketing. This has enabled the introduction of innovative ‘showcases’, an online tool which allows visitors to see all properties in a selected area listed with your Bevans agent. “It’s certainly not the case for all businesses, but in real estate a dominant web presence is becoming the new shop front” said Bevans Director, Will Soeterboek.

“We have invested heavily in our online presence, meaning if you are with Bevans, your property will be found by buyers”. In addition to internet marketing, the sales hub at Bevans Thirroul have an in-house graphic designer, sales support, property managers, and active sales professionals, who live in and are passionate about the Northern Illawarra. “Increasingly we are seeing a shift in the way agencies operate and geographic boundaries are no longer relevant” said Justin Sydenham Sales Manager of Bevans Thirroul. “Wendy is at her best when she talks to buyers and sellers, she literally has found her ‘wings’ and we are delighted to give her the opportunity to meet more people”. For more information go to www.thirroul. bevans.com.au, visit 10/345 Lawrence Hargrave Drive Thirroul or call Wendy Lepre on 0431 322 192.

There is Nothing Like Playing in a Band... Here is one of the bands formed during the first Warrior program back in 2009. They are called Our Era, and have been playing together ever since then. These people had never met before, and through the program we grouped them together, they performed, and now they play regular gigs at Engadine Bowling Club. From left to right they are: Peter Corben, Kim Mannix, Ashley Boorman, Jeff Davis, Vlad Josephson

Engadine Music Education Centre can get you back into jamming and performing, even if it’s been a while or you have limited experience. Each year we sponsor the Weekend Warriors program for people who want to rediscover the fun of playing in a rock band. Weekend Warriors focuses on just two things, playing great music & having fun. There’s no better way to get back to playing and enjoying music than joining Weekend Warriors.

As a Weekend Warrior you’ll be matched with other musicians of a similar level and playing the music you love, from Daddy Cool to Snow Patrol. Weekend Warriors is an adventure that begins with a jam and ends with a gig. The Weekend Warrior program provides all the latest gear, the rehearsal space, a coach and even the other members of your band! After the initial jam, you’ll rehearse one night a week for four weeks and then finish off with a gig at a local club for your friends, family and fellow Warriors. Again it’s all arranged, the Weekend Warrior program organises the staging, sound, lighting and even the roadies. All you have to do is show up, have fun and be a star! Engadine Music Education Centre has already conducted two very successful warrior programs and concerts. All monies raised from the concert are donated to the Sutherland Hospital’s Children’s Ward. We are looking for band members for this year’s Weekend Warriors program which is starting soon. If you would like to have a jam please visit: www.engadinemusic.com or email scott@ engadinemusic.com Phone 9520 3044

SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL BUSINESS Singer Finds Her Home Rebecca Moore is a highly accomplished, award winning singer and songwriter. After touring Australia and the UK extensively, for the past year she has lived locally at Otford. Rebecca has appeared in many festivals, including the Tamar Valley Folk Festival, Gulgong Folk Festival, The Falls Festival and Cygnet Folk Festival (Tasmania) and the National Folk Festival, Canberra. She has supported artists such as Archie Roach, Christine Anu and the John Butler Trio, and won awards for song writing. Her new album was recorded in London, and features a decade of her music and performance. Rebecca also raises money for orphans in Burma, and has so far donated $20,000 to lost children through her singing. She finds the local area ideal for her needs. “The lifestyle and environment available in this area makes it the perfect location, out of the city yet close enough for work,” she said. She thinks it great that locals have struggled to protect the natural environment. “I would like to stay here for a long time.” Rebecca will appear with the band Melody Pool at the Coalcliff Surf Club Sunday May 12

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD from 2-5 pm. This will be a relaxed afternoon of folk/rock music in a spectacular location next to the sea. Tickets are only $10. Further information about Rebecca can be found at www.rebeccamooremusic.com

Music at the Chapel A special fundraising concert was held at the Bushland Chapel on Saturday 20th April. Originally planned for an outdoor location, it was held indoors at the last moment due to the weather. The concert featured an outstanding line up of artists including Peter Thomas and the Bluesalband, Meriweather, Little Big Smoke, Rebecca Moore and Belinda Robinson, as well as Irish Dancing! The concert was organised by Anne Brown of Stanwell Tops, and over 50 attended despite the rain. The event raised almost $1000 for Médecins Sans Frontières and the Hope Orphanage, Kenya. The chapel space proved to be a popular and good location for live music, and further concerts are planned there mid-year.

YOUTH NEWS

We Connect and Say Thanks

By Carina Herbert Holy Cross Catholic Primary School held their annual fete on Saturday 14th March 2013 and the day was a great success with the rain staying away and the sun shining all day long. The theme of the fete this year was “We Connect” and the aim for the day was to raise funds to buy new technology for the classrooms. One of our community projects to mark the day was to build a chain to connect everyone who attended and showed their support. Students asked patrons to write their name on a paper “link” which was later glued together to form a giant chain. Once completed, the chain measured in at a spectacular 2,695cms. Organizers, students and school staff would like to extend a massive thank you to everyone who helped to make our fete a great success. We would like to thank the local community and following businesses for their continued support. CHURCH NEWS Smashing Cycles of Poverty Ron Balderston of Helensburgh has cycled 2500 km in a charity bike ride from Sydney to Noosa and back again in an attempt to raise $1million to help smash the devastating cycles of poverty overseas and in Australia on behalf of Anglican Aid. “It has been hard work but God has blessed us with great weather with hardly a drop of rain. “While the days are long there is rest at the end of them and the locals on the way have been so generous by billeting us and feeding us.” “We won’t know how much money has been raised until the end of the bike ride but to give but one example we were thrilled when a lady approached us in Tamworth and handed over a pledge to donate $3,600 to rebuild an entire sewered house in India which was destroyed by floods,” Mr Balderston said. “To our surprise the motorists have been very patient with our group. People are waving, tooting their horns and getting right out of our way. They are being very gracious,” Ron said. CEO of Anglican Aid, David Mansfield, praised Ron for his contribution.

“Ron is a strong and experienced rider who is very happy to stay at the back of the pack encouraging those who are not as experienced and who feel weary,” Reverend Mansfield said. “We call Ron ‘the anchorman’ and he is a real key to our ride. He is a wonderful encouragement to all the riders. “Ron knows how important this trip is in order to raise $1 million for the more than 1.3 billion people in the world who live on around $1.00 a day. “With over 20,000 children under the age of five dying every day from preventable causes, such as hunger, the Smashing Cycles of Poverty is a race against time as we try to save as many people in the developing world as possible,” Reverend Mansfield said. “Anglican Aid, which aims to help everyone in poverty no matter what their beliefs, partners with Christian organisations to alleviate poverty in the developing world and here in Australia. People can help Ron and friends reach the $1million target by calling Anglican Aid on 1800 653 903, visiting www.anglicanaid.org.au, or by sending a cheque to Anglican Aid PO Box Q190, QVB Post Office, NSW 1230. CHEERS 2508

CHEERS to all our ANZACS both past and present and the large number of people who attended dawn services in the area. We are truly privileged to have fine Veterans in our community such as Mr Tim Collins pictured above with his wife and ‘Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels” on ANZAC Day. CHEERS to Ronda, her staff and the volunteers who hosted the ANZAC Day ‘Diggers Breakfast’. You did an outstanding job and made all feel welcome. CHEERS and thank you to our volunteer Surf Life Savers who have helped keep our beaches safe through the peak season. CHEERS to Fiona and Denise (who were going the wrong way!) on the bushwalk, for their kind words after I was verbally abused by an older male walker. I was very distressed and your kindness was very much appreciated. CHEERS to Mums everywhere! Enjoy Sunday May 12th.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD

Fellowship Of The First Fleeters By Betty Warn and Katalina Franklin CROSSING THE BLUE MOUNTAINS: It is 100 years in May since the Blue Mountains were crossed by Europeans. Attempts to cross the mountains, lying to the west of Sydney had been made from 1790, by convicts seeking a way to escape, and adventurers keen to explore the region. Most tried to follow the rivers upstream only to be stopped by rapids or sheer cliffs; others became lost in deep gorges or were forced to turn back by the thick scrub. In May 1813, Gregory Blaxland, William Lawson and William Charles Wentworth set out with a plan to find a passage to the Western Plains by following a line of ridges that ran westward between two river valleys. They had noticed the cattle use the ridges and thought this must be the easiest way over the mountains. Gregory Blaxland (1774 - 1853) had arrived in NSW in 1805 and acquired land near Eastwood. Keen to find new pastureland for his sheep, Blaxland undertook several excursions to find the

best method of crossing the mountains. He then asked Governor Macquarie for permission to form and exploration party. William Lawson (1774 - 1850) had trained in England as a surveyor before joining the NSW Corps. He arrived in Sydney in 1799. By 1813, Lawson was an experienced Colonial Officer with lands at Prospect, when he joined the expedition. William Charles Wentworth (1790 - 1872) was a currency lad, locally born to European parents. Educated in England and then returning to the Colony. In 1811, he was appointed Acting Provost Marshall by Governor Macquarie and granted 1750 acres on the Nepean River. On May 11, 1813, the explorers departed from Emu Plains, reaching the foothills of the Blue Mountains or Glenbrook as it is known today. For Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson, the trip across the Blue Mountains was a tremendous struggle. They recorded that the trek required constant hacking through thick scrub and treading through damp, dew laden undergrowth. They had insufficient food and feared attacks from the Aborigines. These factors, in combination with sickness, nearly saw the men defeated by the rugged terrain. Eighteen days later on May 29, 1813, the Blue Mountains were no longer considered an impassable barrier, following the discovery of the gently sloping mountains to the west. This opened up thousands of acres of farmland.

CLUB NEWS Helensburgh Probus By Mark Henderson The Combined Probus Club of Helensburgh and District has just commenced its 10th year with the election of this year’s committee and Joan Gardner as the clubs 10th president. The club presently has 96 members which is four below its maximum of 100 male and female members. Each gender is limited to no more than 60% of the total club membership at any time to ensure that there is a no domination of membership by either male or female. The members meet at 10.30 am on the second Thursday of the month at the Helensburgh Sports and Social Club. The meeting includes a review of activities past and future followed by a break for morning tea. In the last half of the meeting the members are always entertained by an informative and entertaining guest speaker. Anyone interested in finding out more details of the club should phone our membership officer, Elaine Smith on 42941023. Prospective members are invited to attend two meetings which allows them to met the members and gain an understand the club and its activities. After the second meeting, they may obtain an application form. Then when approved by the club they are either admitted to membership or if no position is available placed in order on a waiting list. Applicants on the waiting list cannot attend club meetings but can take part in club activities. The first club activity of the Probus year was the annual presidents picnic held early April when 70 members and visitors attended Woronora Dam for a day of fellowship and fun and good food prepared by our Master Chef members Brian and Gail Pendlebury, ably assisted by our catering committee. Activities planned for the month of May include a theatre party to “The Adams Family”, our monthly Golf and Bowls days and our monthly day trip - day at Kembla Grange races. We also have our monthly walk which consists of a interesting walk in the morning always finishing at a club or hotel for an enjoyable lunch.

Our yearly activities include a coach trip which uses a motel in an area as a base whilst we explore the surrounding countryside. The 2013 trip held in March was to Oberon. Other yearly activities include a tagalong in which a booking is made at a caravan park (those members with caravans are joined by those without who rent cabins), a yearly overseas trip which this year is being planned for Hawaii and includes a cruise back to Sydney. Presently we have booked our Christmas in July - coach and accommodation for 3 nights at the Ettalong Beach Resort. Further information on the club can be found on our web http://helensburghprobus.webplus. net

Helensburgh VIEW Club By Virginia Dowson As mentioned in last month’s Helensburgh & District Herald, VIEW Club went on excursion to Berry and Gerroa. All on board the bus had a good time and, in spite of the wet weather, were not deterred from shopping and browsing in Berry, especially when they got to the Treat Factory and loaded up with chocolates, sweets and home-made relishes. Then it was on to Gerroa for fish and chips, chicken, fruit salad and apple pie. We have received great support from Tracey at Northern Illawarra Neighbourhood Aid inc NINA, praising the work of VIEW and the need for new members. She spoke about it at Cafe Club. NINA, too, is in need of more Volunteers. In their words “It brings its own rewards - Part of the Community Working with the Community”. VIEW information cards have been placed for distribution at NINA, and are also available at Helensburgh Library.

By Elaine Bolton Fancy taking up running, or improving your running this winter? One of the best ways to see progress is to do some timed runs around a set route. The popularity of Parkrun’s free, timed, 5km runs around Australia has increased enormously over the last two years. Parkrun is a not-for-profit organisation established in the United Kingdom, and is run by volunteers to promote a healthy lifestyle. This has encouraged many to track their running progress by attending the same run several times throughout the year. Runs are generally held on Saturday mornings, and in Sydney are held at Curl Curl, Parramatta and St Peters. Several running groups organise runs in or close to Helensburgh and Darkes Forest, including Sutherland District Athletics Club, which organises an excellent winter crosscountry series. They offer distances suitable for both adults and children. At Mind the Gap Fitness we will be starting a free, weekly, timed run to appeal particularly to beginner and intermediate runners. The runs will start the first weekend in May, and will start at 8 am sharp on Saturday mornings from our studio, Unit 19, Helensburgh Business Park on Cemetery Road. The run follows the road, so is not suitable for children. Please note that as these runs are at no cost, the run is undertaken under each individual’s own risk. It is approximately 4 km for one loop (or runners can complete 2 loops for an 8 km run). Those wishing to be timed must record their name at the front desk before the start, and will be able to record their name and time on their return. All runners must be able to complete the loop (or 2 loops) in 1 hour or less. This would allow beginners to walk some or all of the 4 km distance if required. Results will be published on Facebook and on our website each week. With our own local fun run, the Burgh 2 Beach coming up later in the year, why not kickstart your training now? Further details can be obtained from Elaine Bolton on 0417 679 639 or physicalpursuit@ bigpond.com. Results will be published at www. mindthegapyogafitness.com and on the Facebook page for Mind the Gap Fitness.

SPORT Sunday Social Golf Club By Vicki “The Hair” Little As the skies rumbled above us I was so worried about getting my hair wet, but the hair gods were good to us - only a few drops. I played Deb, my sister, and Pete “Dancer/Singer” Sullivan, who I might add, hit a golf ball into a tree trunk; it was a classic! Even though he had to take a drop, what a fine game he played to take 1st place with 39 points. We said he had luck on his side because he was playing with the gals (ha-ha). Our good friend Johnny Brunton has been quite the golfer lately and finished 2nd on 36 points - all I got to say is Cut, Cut, Cut. “Goose” the quiet achiever came in with 35 points, also winning a few minor prizes. It’s good to see a few old faces back. Ross Fagerström and Rusty Jahns who both had some war injuries were back at it, Rusty with the same old cheek. Our next game is the start of the matchplay and the Joe Doherty Cup, on which it is always an honour to have your name engraved. These are but a few of the games that we play through the year that make the game interesting and competitive.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD Helensburgh Workers Sports & Social Club, Social Golf Club By Barry Thompson A couple of our members confidently said “Look, it’s clearing up!” and we, somewhat foolishly, trusted their judgement and agreed to play our April tournament in spite of the leaden skies. Our leading foursome had just reached the 4th, when the heavens opened and dumped enough water to almost completely flood the course. So much water, that if anybody had fallen over I suspect they would have drowned. A hasty retreat was called and the event was cancelled in favour of home and a hot shower. This leaves me with no results and a thin column. We extend a further invitation to golfers of all standards to join our club. Just arrive early and introduce yourself to our starters or register on the starters list on the TAB notice board. Our next tournament is on Saturday May 18 at Boomerang. Tee off 7.00. This is the first championship round and all are welcome (even Terry and Rod if they give up forecasting). For any further information please contact me on helgolf@outlook.com

SPORT Helensburgh Women’s Bowling Club By Beatrice Gallagher, Publicity Officer We are a friendly group who enjoy our bowling and would happily welcome anyone who would like to have a go! Come along to the Workers Club any Tuesday morning around 9.30am. Our Secretary, Lenore Bartlem, would be happy to give more information if required and she can be contacted on 4294 1472. Joan Gardner happened to notice on her pedometer the other day that she had walked 4.5 kilometres during her game....what a fun way to get your exercise. Aaahhhhh....my computer froze and I lost the report which was not saved so please excuse any spelling mistakes... 19 MARCH: How lucky we are to be alive! A cool start to the day but with the sun shining and after our chatty morning tea we were all glad to be out on the green. Welcome back to Rhonda Christie looking healthy and refreshed after her south coast caravanning holiday – she has certainly been missed...Rhonda thanked Helen Haynes, Elaine Smith and Joan Gardner for looking after the games in her absence (and they did a great job). Rhonda had a busy day planned with more competition getting underway to take advantage of the good weather. President June McCotter welcomed Kay Wooley who joined us today. Hope you had a good day Kay and will continue to come along and enjoy your bowls along with the friendship always on offer. The Queen of the Green was played today and the very happy winner was Beatrice Gallagher over r/up Lenore Bartlem (thanks Lenore for a great game!). In the first of the major singles Rhonda Christie after her 6 week break won with Pat Watts r/up. In the second major singles r/u Ann Jackson gave the winner Joan Gardner, a nail biting finish. ...this was Joan’s third week in a row she has experienced great battles...think she is wearing out??? The minor singles winner was Robyn Smith, after a slow start managed to get back on top of r/up Judith Starky. The social triples game finished in a draw… congratulations to both teams of Kay Wooley, Kathy Morgan, Carol Dixon and Margaret May, Wendy Britten, June McCotter. We all enjoyed our sandwiches provided with great service from the Bistro and our raffle draws and bingo were a bit rowdier than usual...not mentioning who might be contributing to that!

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD The daily prize went to Kathy Morgan who decided as she was not a wine drinker she would pass it on to Carol Dixon who was!! Judith Starky did not have much luck on the green but did take home the fruit and vegies. Kathy, again being most generous, selected a rock orchid from the bingo prizes saying she would pass it on to June K as she was disappointed in not winning one the previous. There were a number of people amassing little piles from bingo today including me! 26 MARCH: Straight into competition games this morning and in the major singles the winner was Robyn Smith and r/up Helen Haynes. There were 2 consistency games: Janet Smith and Ann Jackson had an amazing marathon battle so congratulations to Janet who made it home just in front of Ann. There were a few hungry bowlers waiting on this game to finish so lunch could begin. In the other game the winner was Beatrice Gallagher and new bowler Margaret May r/up. For the social game the team of Kathy Morgan, June Killham, June McCotter and swinger Robyn Single were winners and Rhonda Christie, Pat Watts, Jenny Mason and swinger Robyn Single r/up. President June was the Easter Bunny presenting all ladies with Easter eggs..thanks June. Happy Birthday to Pat Watts. Rhonda Christie won the daily prize... An Easter Egg basket and Jenny Mason won the fruit and vegies again! The 4th time this year....we might stop selling her tickets! President June advised the ladies that Rhonda Christie will not be nominating for her position at the AGM and asked for members to consider taking on the job. Jenny Mason and Robyn Smith both offered to train up for this position. The World Cup is being played at Warilla Bowling Club next month so Robyn Single is arranging a social day to see a game and have lunch. The Men’s Bowling Club together with ladies from the Women’s Bowling Club made a big difference after their working in the gardens around the club. Thanks to all who participated in this community effort! Once again the men are organising a mufti bowls day for Anzac Day so hope it is a fine day and everyone enjoys their bowls on this very important day! Happy Bowling

SPORT Stanwell Park Sea Eels – Welcome Back! By Karl Weber, Publicity Officer SPSE The summer sun has started to retreat and the winter swimming season is upon us once again. The water is still a nice temperature and believe it or not, it usually stays pretty warm for a few months to come. We will start to see the whales swimming up along the coast around this time of the year, and there is no better vantage point than poolside on a Sunday morning. The Sea Eel’s first swim back at Coalcliff Pool was on April 7 and this was followed by our annual general meeting back at HelensburghStanwell Park Surf Club. Most club officebearers were returned to their positions and this year is shaping up to be a cracker. Gold For Krystal By Angela Fagerström At just 10 years of age, Krystal Blackwell of Helensburgh has amassed an impressive collection of medals for her athletic ability. Most recently, Krystal was selected to represent New South Wales at the State Track & Field Championships held at Homebush in March. Krystal put in an amazing performance to take out gold in all four events she entered, setting a new state record in the 70m race, and new NSW and Australian records in the 400m race. Krystal started with Helensburgh & District Little Athletics at age six and has been a constant competitor since. However, her skills are not limited to athletics; she is also a state representative for Oztag and competitive horse riding.

Talented young athlete: Krystal Blackwell out in front

Krystal is also heavily involved in PSSA (Primary Schools Sports Association) events and along with fellow Helensburgh athlete Beau Whittaker, travelled to Adelaide to compete in the National Championships in November. Both youngsters did us proud; Beau took home silver in the long jump (U11 years), Krystal won bronze in the 4 x 100 relay and finished 6th in the 100m (U11 years). Krystal’s very proud dad, Wayne Blackwell said “We want to give a special thank you to Dave Scott who trains Krystal and all those who have shown support along the way”. “I want to go to the Olympic Games for my favourite events which are the 70, 100, 200 and 400 metre races” said Krystal. Next time you see Krystal or any of our talented young locals raising money to compete out of area, show your support and we might be able to see more 2508 representatives at the Olympic Games in coming years!
