Following the Masterplan’s strategy, a proposal for an Agricultural Entrepreneurship Center was made for a location adjacent to the city’s river Nedon. The area is being characterized as an agricultural and industrial zone thus, a business function related with agriculture is suggested in an area close to both the main urban fabric and the rural areas of Kalamata. This center aims to revive public space and strengthen the city’s coastal front. It also supports rural entrepreneurship offering practical training and know-how skills to agriculture entrepreneurs.

The concept is based on the equivalence of the natural and built environment and includes urban floorings and furniture design. The main building includes facilities related with agricultural entrepreneurship and is dressed by a metallic skin with alternating shading and visual points. In the adjacent triangular-shaped building “emerging” from the ground at a lower level, locals can find a coffeeshop and a market area where they can promote their own products.

The surrounding landscape incorporates trees and herbs coresponding to the fauna of the Messinian vegetation. Meanwhile, pedestrians can further explore a variety new recreational spaces added in the landscape as they approach the center.

his project was designed during the ECOweek wokshop meeting in Thessaloniki and deals about the construction of a temporary pavilion in Aristoutelous square, the most central square in the city of Thessaloniki. The concept is based on a spinning top created by folding paper sides. Folding sides created surfaces translated into space and ended up creating a “spinning-like” composition. In this wooden pavilion visitors can enjoy a variey of activities (either permanent or seasonal) despite its small scale. Its tree-like form indicated that each branch (room) can reveal a different story. In addition, the pavilion be rotated in order to point to several directions and providing a variety of different views of the city.It can be regarded as a passage, a stop and a resting area for small groups of people or individuals. Finally, each room is by a different wood type exposing wood different

07 Restoration of Pavlos Melas Military Camp

3rd Bachelor year (AUTH) | Group work

Pavlos Melas Military Camp is located in Stavroupoli in the west of Thessaloniki. Within the framework of the new town hall’s planning program, two buildings will host its services. It is assumed that the main entrances would be perpendicular to the main street.

The concept devides the building in 4 parts, placing ramps as the main vertical circulation element in the middle of the two identical parts of the building. In this way, the different town hall departments are better separated and distinguished.

The building is accessed by a ramp through which visitors and employees get access from an underground platform which is connected to a central square through an underground passage below the main bulkhead. The central square is created in the middle of the two building blocks of the town hall, hosting commercial uses that are associated with the restaurant and cafe located in the basement of the central building.

After a thorough analysis of the building’s decaying condition, it was understood that the mansory and the openings are still in good condition whereas the roof does not exist and the window and door frames need to be replaced. The external wall will be preserved, exposing the building’s monumental character. The new (interior) shell is designed by a metal grid and prefabricated elements, shading systems (external and internal). Supporting mechaninsms between the old and the new shell are highlighting the elements of each period.

The new interventions aim to make this area a living part of Stavroupoli’s web, regardless of the opening hours of the new town hall. On the overall handling, emphasis is given on the ramp, which serves both a smooth access to the premises due to the altitude differences as well as the easier movement of disabled people.

08 Architectural Mapping of a traditional residence

3rd Bachelor year (AUTH) | Group work

The building is located in the village Galatista of Chalkidiki and was built around the village’s historic web where the majority of the buildings follow the significant architectural tradition of Macedonian architecture. Built in the late 19th century, this house preserves the glossary of local architectural traditions, which is evident in the house’s facades. The building materials are mainly; local stone and pine wood in the roof and the window frames. Nowadays, the ground floor serves as a storage area while until 1955 it used to have a commercial use. Architectural interventions have been made to the roof, the window frames, the interior masonry walls, as well as the hydraulic and heating system. There is no clear image of the initial floors while it is evident that the wall’s thickness contributed to the house’s insulation. The project aimed to map the building’s current state by taking under consideration all the conversions it has undergone.

09 Waterfront and Marine design

1st Master year (AUTH) | Group work

The study area is located on the south-eastern side of Thessaloniki on the borders of the municipality of Kalamaria and Pilea. It is characterized by high construction and dense urban fabrication, while it also has sufficient green areas and woodlands. Uses in the region are mixed. Approaching the area, a general lack of organized and continuous pedestrian traffic on the coastal front is noticed.

The project aims to create a vivid space that will connect efficiently the dock where passenger ships embark with the metro station and its terminal located northeast. The specifications of the masterplan’s program include municipal services such as a bank and a postoffice, an info-center located at the marine entrance, a restaurant and other public services.

10 Exhibition Design & Heritage Management

1st Master year (AUTH) | Group work

The main objective of this proposal is to highlight the multiculturalism of the city of Thessaloniki using the axis of Venizelos road, which is a characteristic example of the blending of many different elements that constitute the identity of the city. The central museological idea is based on a mild indication of all the elements mentioned above. The design focuses on the different flooring and use of plants associated with the period (Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek period) that includes a monument on or near Venizelos street. In addition, the green areas are reinforced around the area. The road ends are converted into sprawl areas and create visual stimuli that enhance the interest of the walker in order to continue his course.
