th Words: Joe Smi Although it’s arguably one of the most memorable parts of going to Uni, Freshers week is guaranteed to leave you embarrassed, skint and vomiting from every orifice. The transition from binge drinking to serious academic study can be tough, so we give you refreshers week, a list of sober things to do in your city that won’t cost you a bomb:
Lincoln
Start
Steep Hill in Lincoln, apart from being a steep hill, is a street full of cool independent shops and coffee houses. The route also features some authentic Norman buildings and leads up to Lincoln Cathedral. A must for all first time visitors.
Leicester Space is awesome and Leicester’s National Space Centre is crammed full space stuff; ergo it’s definitely worth a visits. Exhibitions include satellites and rockets and the building also houses the UK’s largest domed planetarium. The real exciting part is that on 21st – 22nd September, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Return of the Jedi, NSC is hosting a reunion of those most divisive of Star Wars characters the Ewoks. Jar Jar Binks will not be there.
Nottingham A fun and inexpensive way to kill time is to learn how to skate at the National Ice Centre. Their twin Olympic-sized skating rink is open regularly to the public and it costs a fiver including skate hire if you have an NUS card. Also great for dates and birthday parties.
Derby The Heights of Abraham is a country park which incorporates 60 acres of woodland hillside and a complex of underground caverns leftover from the lead mining industry. You can take a cable car to the top of the valley for some stunning views of the surrounding Peak District, and apparently the caverns are also a sight to behold.
Northampton What better way to wash away the Freshers week hangover than to get dunked in a torrent of fastmoving water? The Nene Whitewater Centre offers sessions in canoeing, rafting and tubing. Dodging whirlpools is apparently good for team-building, but we know you’re just in it for a laugh.
