EMERSON ZX Medium Temperature Condensing Unit USER MANUAL

ZX medium temperature CDU Disclaimer Thank you for purchasing the ZX medium temperature condensing unit from Emerson Climate Technologies. ZX medium temperature CDU’s are the best in class within the capacity and operating range available in the market. ZX CDU is designed to operate reliably and to deliver high operating efficiencies in medium temperature refrigeration applications. It also provides constant monitoring of the compressor operating conditions and displays the running or fault conditions (diagnostic display available only in Gold version) of the CDU. ZX medium temperature units have to be installed by following the industry trade practices for its safe and reliable operation. It is assumed that the CDU is selected, installed and serviced only by professionals. The user manual does not cover good industry practices which are essential on a refrigeration equipment installation. No responsibility can be accepted for damage caused by inexperienced or inadequately trained site technicians or improper installation design If in doubt, please consult your local sales office, quoting unit model and serial number as shown on each unit nameplate. In case of any ambiguity, the wiring diagram supplied with each unit takes precedence over the diagram in this manual.

Introduction to ZX medium temperature CDU ZX MT series CDU has been highly successful in the Asian market and enjoys proven success with its energy savings and customer-friendly electronic features. ZX MT CDU’s have been applied by several well known end-users and chain retailers throughout Asia. The ZX platform is also gaining wider acceptance in the global market and specific variants have been developed and exported to the USA, European and Middle East markets. ZX medium temperature condensing units applies Copeland ZX Scroll compressors with the patented suction line injection on the compressor suction. Suction line injection allows a reliable and efficient MT envelope of up to -15 deg C (R-22) and -20 deg C (R404A) evaporating temperatures. In suction line injection, a part of liquid refrigerant is added into the compressor suction gas. Suction injection de-superheats the suction gas and controls the compressor discharge temperature. This is implemented through electronic control by the E2 controller and an electronic expansion valve (EXV). The E2 monitors the compressor discharge temperature and optimizes the opening of the EXV for optimal discharge gas control.

Receiving your unit All units are shipped with a holding charge of dry nitrogen inside at a low but positive pressure. Suitable labeling is prominently displayed on both the unit and the packaging. Service connectors are provided on the CDU service valve for the convenient checking of the integrity of the holding charge. Caution! It is very important to check that this holding pressure exists at the time you receive each unit from us or our authorized representatives. Please inform us or our authorized representative if the holding charge is non-existent or low. Failure to do so could void the claim for other related system faults at a later period. Transit damage is essentially an insurance claim and is not covered under manufacturing defect. It is also advisable to inspect the rest of the unit for obvious physical damage and inform us or our authorized representative in case any is discovered.

E2 controller The E2 controller consists of 2 electronic board assemblies as shown in figure 04: E2 power board and control board. The power board supplies constant DC power to the E2 control board. The E2 control board carries the intelligent chip containing the canned programs. The entire assembly is pre-installed and wired in the factory on a new unit. Both electronic boards carry a LED light (refer fig 04 in which the LED on both boards are identified). If the LED lights are on after power-up of the unit, it indicates normal and proper operation of the electronic boards. Once these lights are on, the rest of the unit including the compressor is monitored and digital messages are shown on the diagnostic module. In the later part of this manual a list of messages displayed on the diagnostic module is shown. Diagnostic messaging is available only in ZX Gold version CDU. Follow the steps below if one of the LED’s in the ZX power or control board is not lit up after powering up the unit.

E2 Power Board

E2 Control Board Figure 04

If power board LED is OFF, check the power input (L1 and L4) and Fuse. If power input and fuse is good, then please replace the power board. If main board LED is OFF, but power board is ON, please reset (S1 reset). If main board LED is back to ON, the main board works. If main board LED is still “OFF”, please change the main board.

Defrost module: (optional) The E2 control is also designed to apply a ZX defrost (DF) module. The ZX DF module is a basic time initiated DF module. The defrost module is supplied as an optional accessory. The DF module has two rotary switches by which the user can set up the defrost duration and defrost interval. The DF module also enables a manual defrost as an override to the rotary switch setting of defrost interval. Figure 06 shows the defrost module

E2 control board dip switch setting The E2 control board has 2 dip switches (2-bit and 3-bit) and 1 rotary switch. The rotary switch and the 2-bit dip switch are used in combination to select the compressor used on the unit. The selected compressor relates to the over-current-limit for the specified unit. The 3-bit dip switch is used if the customer chooses to use the E2 control for evaporator fan control. Fig 07 shows the dip switches and rotary switch in the E2 control board.

Caution on refrigerant charging IMPORTANT! TO BE CLEARLY UNDERSTOOD PRIOR TO RUNNING ANY SCROLL COMPRESSOR! It is important to realize that the scroll compressor design requires system charging as quickly as possible – with liquid refrigerant into the liquid line. This is to avoid running the compressor when there is an insufficient volume of suction gas to cool not only the motor, but also the rotating scrolls. (Temperature builds up very quickly in the scrolls if this is not done!)

DO NOT CHARGE VAPOR IN A SCROLL COMPRESSOR! It therefore follows that the suction service valve must never be fully closed at any time when the compressor is running. To do so would destory the compressor as explained above. This valve is provided for ease of connection and for fitting the service gauges without removing the unit panel.
