grating from Sicily and Naples, Italy. His family grew up close to the area, and when he opened his restaurant on 441 Atwells Ave. in Providence three years ago, it was a homecoming for him and his family.

“I left in 1989 to work in Las Vegas and Florida at various Italian festivals,” said Palmisano, who is a third-generation feast festival promoter and a well-known local philanthropist. Our family loves the area and has been a part of this community for years. When this space (for the restaurant) was available, it was like coming home again,” he continued.

The restaurant employs a dozen people and prides itself on serving dishes with a nod to the “Old Country.” Diners can feast on several signature dishes, including their bone-in veal chops that are so big that they take up the entire plate, their linguini and clams and their Italian stuffed artichokes. Patrons can also dive into their fresh fish dishes, chicken or veal parmigiana with pasta, or perhaps for dessert, their amazingly delicious homemade cannolis.

Perhaps their calling card is their "World Famous Expresso Martinis,” among other specialty cocktails that are infused with rosemary, ginger and other herbs to give them an authentic flair and taste.

Palmisano said that his goal for operating a successful restaurant is simple: “I want people to feel like they are eating at my house.”

He noted about how meals are cultivated back in Italy. “It starts with visiting the local butcher shop for the freshest meat, then walking to the garden to select the vegetables, and maybe to the local store to pick up a bottle of wine. Palmisano said that the restaurant strives to maintain this tradition because “farm to table” offers the best quality and flavors for their customers.

“I hope that when customers visit Anthony’s Italian Cuisine, they enjoy a little piece of Italy with every made-to-order dish,” he said.

The restaurant is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11:30 AM to 9:30 PM, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM, and Sunday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The bar remains open one hour after closing.

They also cater events and have daily specials and promotions. For more details about these upcoming events, please call 401273-5900. More details may be found by visiting their website at www.AnthonysonFederalHill.com.

Electric ’Flying Car’ Gets Key Permit From FAA

The Jetsons was set in 2062, but a vehicle George Jetson might be comfortable taking his kids to school in could be here a lot sooner. Joby Aviation, a key player in the eVTOL - electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle market, has received a permit from the Federal Aviation Administration to begin flight testing its new production prototype. The special airworthiness certificate keeps the company on course to deliver the aircraft to the US Air Force next year, which Joby says would be the first eVTOL ever delivered to a customer. The company plans to launch an electric air taxi service in 2025.

“The aircraft will now undergo initial flight testing before being delivered to Edwards Air Force Base, California, where it will be used to demonstrate a range of potential logistics use cases,” Joby said in a press release. The aircraft, which has a flight range of up to 100 miles, can take off and land like a helicopter and reach flight speeds of up to 200mph. It can carry up to four passengers and the company says it is “nearly silent in cruise mode and 100 times quieter than conventional aircraft during takeoff and landing,” Engadget reports.

The prototype was built on the company’s assembly line in California, in partnership with Toyota, its biggest investor.

“This first aircraft coming off our pilot manufacturing line is a really, really big deal for the company,” Joby founder and CEO JoeBen Bevirt tells TechCrunch. He says the manufacturing line can build tens of aircraft per year and the company is working with Toyota—which has a “significant number of engineers on site with us working shoulder to shoulder here in California”—on building a facility that can produce the eVTOLs in larger quantities.

Amsterdam Doesn’t Want Any More Cruise Tourists

Amsterdam is trying to reduce the number of tourists that visit the city... especially cruise ship tourists, who have been likened to a “plague” by city council member Ilana Rooderkerk. The council has voted to ban cruise ships from docking in the city center and to close the central cruise terminal, the BBC reports. “Cruise ships in the center of the city don’t fit in with Amsterdam’s task of cutting the number of tourists,” said Rooderkerk, whose liberal party introduced the motion. She said polluting cruise ships are not in line with the city’s “sustainable ambitions.”

Terrain: The resort is made up of two interconnected mountains, Lincoln Peak, where the majority of trails are, and Mount Ellen. Other lower peaks include Castle Rock, Gadd Peak and North Lynx. For the type of gnarly terrain you would expect from Mad River Glen, just hop aboard the Castle Rock Double chair to Castle Rock. From the top at 3,812 ft, you’ll have the steep double black chutes of Lift Line and Rumble to get stuck into. If clocking up maximum vertical drop is more your thing then you’ll find the slopes here laid out much better for top-to-bottom shredding than at Killington. Even if you ski all 111 trails here, there’s also 2,000 ac of backcountry to explore in the Slide Brook Basin area!

Town: If all that wasn’t enough, Sugarbush is generally a notch cheaper than pricey Stowe, but not at the sacrifice of luxury. For lavish lodgings, look no further than Lincoln Peak Village. For these reasons and more, when it comes to the most practical ski destination in Vermont, Sugarbush is a fantasic choice for a winter weekend getaway!

Mayor Femke Halsema complained last year that cruise ship tourists ate at international chain restaurants during the few hours they were in the city but didn’t have time to do things like visit museums. She said Amsterdam “welcomes 22 million tourists per year, and that’s a little bit too much.” Amsterdam has also been trying to discourage visits from tourists who see the city as a party destination.

Around 100 cruise ships dock in the center of the Dutch city every year.

“The task for Amsterdam is now to reduce the number of tourists. All parties in the city must contribute to this, including the cruises,” Rooderkerk said in a statement. Closing the central cruise terminal will also allow the city to build a new bridge over the River IJ, connecting the southern district to the Noord district, where the city aims to build much-needed new housing.

There’s a Fresh Geyser Mystery in Yellowstone

Man Makes a Living Losing $300K at the Slots

Front Page

It’s unclear why the Steamboat THE TOP EARNING MUSICIANS OF THE DECADE

It’s the tallest active geyser on the planet— with an emphasis on “active.” From 2015 to 2017, it didn’t erupt at all. There was another largely quiet period from 1911 to 1961, but in 2018 it logged a record-setting 32 eruptions, a feat it has crushed this year with 47 eruptions, per the US Geological Survey. Why? Good question, and one that hasn’t been answered. It’s one on a long list of geyser mysteries, in fact. The geyser-research field is a thin one, and as Yellowstone National Park’s hydrologist explained the area beneath Steamboat hasn’t been mapped. However, seismic sensors there have revealed that the geyser’s water source may sit as deep as 130 feet.

Brian Christopher makes a living by losing money, and a lot of it—$300,000 last year. The California man is part of what Katherine Sayre, writing in the Wall Street Journal, terms a “new class of niche celebrities:” People who play slot machines in casinos with the cameras rolling, narrating and livestreaming their experiences to audiences at home. The trick is to “make them feel like they’re sitting there beside you,” Christopher says. “It’s not, ‘I won a jackpot.’ It’s, ‘we just won a jackpot.’” Hundreds of thousands of people tuned in to Facebook and YouTube to watch Christopher play last year—he has about 1.3 million followers/ subscribers across the platforms—an audience big enough to justify the 10 employees who work for him. He wouldn’t tell Sayre how much he made last year, but he did confirm he made a profit even after paying those employees and sacrificing $300,000 at the slots. What’s the appeal?

“It’s fun to watch somebody else play with their money while you’re sitting on your couch drinking a beer,” said one 60-yearold Virginia man who does visit casinos but also likes watching Christopher online.

Most other geysers seem to be fueled by shallower reserves; deeper equals warmer, so that could be a factor in Steamboat’s ability to propel water to heights of more than 300 feet. Michael Poland with the USGS earlier this year said it’s possible that increased snowfall in Yellowstone of late has led to more groundwater to fuel the geyser. What scientists are saying is that there’s no link between the increased activity and any potential looming eruption of Yellowstone’s supervolcano. “Yellowstone has an incredible geyser system that is unrelated to magmatic activity—other than the magmatic system basically providing heat,” tweeted one volcanologist. USA Today noted that the Waimangu Geyser in New Zealand has managed to shoot water taller than Steamboat has, but it’s been

The revenue Christopher rakes in doesn’t just come from those online eyeballs, though. A partnership struck with Carnival Cruise Line last September (he’s their “exclusive slots influencer”) offers up to 650 fans the chance to vacation and gamble with him in onboard casinos; he has eight such trips scheduled for next year. He even has a branded slot machine that utters some of his signature catchphrases (among them: “Line it up!” and “How rude!”) that outperformed casino floor averages shortly after its 2022 debut.

Jamie Foxx Breaks Silence on Hospitalization

Jamie Foxx hasn’t disclosed the nature of the medical complication that led to his hospitalization in April, but he says he went to “hell and back.” In a video posted on Instagram, the 55-year-old actor said he “went through something that I thought I would never, ever go through.” This is the first time he has publicly discussed the medical scare. “I know a lot of people were waiting or wanting to hear updates but to be honest with you, I just didn’t want you to see me like that man,” he said. ”I want you to see me laughing, having a good time partying, cracking a joke, doing a movie, television show. I didn’t want you to see me with tubes running out of me and trying to figure out

if I was gonna make it through.” Foxx, who was hospitalized while filming in Atlanta and has kept a relatively low profile since getting out of the hospital in May, pushed back against rumors that spread on social media, saying he’s not paralyzed and his “eyes are working fine.” ”I went to hell and back, and my road to recovery had some potholes as well. But I’m coming back and I’m able to work,” he said. He thanked his daughter, sister, and medical team, as well as his fans. “I love everybody and I love all of the love that I got,” he said. ”If you see me out from now on and every once in a while I just burst into tears, it’s just because it’s been tough, man. I was sick, man. But now I got my legs under me, so you’re gonna see me out.”

Police in Turkey have successfully recovered an ancient Bible believed to be around a thousand years old. The sacred text, discovered in the city of Tokat, central Turkey, is written in the ancient Assyriac language. The invaluable manuscript was retrieved following an attempt by smugglers to sell it to undercover officers. The origin of the Bible remains unknown, although it is written in the ancient Assyriac language.

Egypt opened two of its oldest pyramids, located about 25 miles south of the capital Cairo, to visitors for the first time since 1965. Antiquities Minister Khaled el-Anany told reporters that tourists are now allowed to visit the Bent Pyramid and its satellite pyramid in the Dahshur royal necropolis, which is part of the Memphis Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Bent Pyramid, which the AP reports was built during the Old Kingdom of the Pharaoh of Sneferu, in about 2600 BC, is unique in that it has two internal structures. El-Anany said the Bent Pyramid represents a transitional form of pyramid construction between the Djoser Step Pyramid (2667-2648 BC) and the Meidum Pyramid (also about 2600 BC). The Guardian notes its "unusual" shape: The first 160 feet rise at "a steep 54 degree angle, before tapering off towards the top."

It still haunts me.” The line from 28-year-old Thai resident Suwanne Maliwan to Reuters expresses a common sentiment Thursday, the 15th anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami that claimed 230,000 lives. Maliwan, for instance, lost both her parents and five other relatives. ”Sometimes I dream that a wave is coming,” she says. Vigils and memorials across Asia were commemorating the staggering loss of life in what was one of the world’s deadliest natural disasters. A 9.1 magnitude earthquake off Sumatra island the morning after Christmas in 2004 triggered the tsunami and unleashed waves as high as 57 feet.

You may one day drive down roads charged with electricity that your vehicle automatically detects and sucks up through an automatic arm—if a Swedish project gains any headway. Called eRoadArlanda, it has turned 1.2 miles of road outside Stockholm into a kind of slot-car track where electric trucks insert movable arms into a rail to recharge the vehicle’s battery while driving. Designers say the technology is weather-proof and the arm will rise automatically when one car passes another, Sky News reports. The rails are also said to be safe to the touch.

Johnson said he admires Kelzenberg's courage but that he won't be able to attend prom because he'll be in Hawaii filming Jungle Cruise. Instead, Johnson rented out a nearby movie theater on Saturday for Kelzenberg and more than 230 friends and family to watch his latest movie, Rampage. Johnson even covered the cost of snacks and drinks for the theater. "I couldn't believe it. I was so surprised," Kelzenberg says. "I just kept thinking, 'He saw me! He knows who I am!'" Kelzenberg says she became a fan of Johnson's five years ago. Her favorite movies of his include Central Intelligence and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

While its cover is reportedly damaged, its remaining 51 pages feature intricate images and religious motifs crafted in gold leaf. Among its contents are depictions of Jesus Christ and various other figures from biblical lore. According to reports, a series of operations were launched in Tokat’s city center and the neighboring Turhal district. As a result, ten individuals were apprehended, and additional valuable items such as jewelry and ancient coins were seized. The Bible itself was promptly delivered to a museum. Scholars and historians anticipate that this ancient tome will provide invaluable insights into the development of Christianity during past centuries.

Coastal areas of Thailand, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, and other countries were deluged. One of the first areas hit was Indonesia’s Aceh province, notes CBS News. In fact, most of those killed were in Indonesia alone, where 170,000 deaths were registered. ”No words can describe our feelings when we tearfully saw thousands of corpses lying on this ground 15 years ago,” said acting Aceh Gov. Nova Iriansyah at a ceremony in Sigli. ”And now, we can see how people in Aceh were able to overcome suffering and rise again, thanks to assistance from all Indonesians and from people all over the world.”

“One of the most important issues of our time is the question of how to make fossil-free road transportation a reality,” says eRoadArlanda Chairman Hans Säll. “We now have a solution that will make this possible, which is amazing.” Among its pluses, Säll says the electric road lets vehicles have smaller batteries and therefore makes vehicles cheaper to produce. The $7.7 million project will be tested with a truck fleet for two years, and if the government approves, it could be implemented for $1.9 million per mile and include buses and cars. “Sweden is at the cutting edge of this technology, which we now hope to introduce in other areas of the country and the world,” Säll says.

Investigators looking into the theft of hundreds of ancient gold coins from a German museum have found lumps of gold that appear to have resulted from part of the treasure being melted down, officials said. Four suspects were arrested in July over the Nov. 22 break-in at the Celtic and Roman Museum in the Bavarian town of Manching in which 483 Celtic coins discovered during an archaeological dig in 1999 were stolen. The coins date to around 100 BC. Authorities said that DNA found on an object outside the museum, which they wouldn’t identify, led them to the suspects, three of whom they linked to a series of previous break-ins in Germany and Austria dating back to 2014. The Manching robbery appeared to be the alleged gang’s first targeting cultural treasures, the AP reported.

El-Anany also announced that Egyptian archaeologists have uncovered a collection of stone, clay, and wooden sarcophagi, some of them with mummies, in the area. He said archaeologists also found wooden funerary masks along with instruments used for cutting stones, dating to the Late Period (664332 BC). Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said they also uncovered large stone blocks along with limestone and granite fragments indicating the existence of ancient graves in the area. Egypt has been whipping up publicity for its new historical discoveries in the hopes of reviving a devastated tourism sector still recovering from the turmoil following a 2011 uprising that toppled longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

6 Year Old Girl Saves Mom’s Life Twice with Alexa

A Scottish woman is praising her daughter for using Alexa to save her life - twice. Emma Anderson, received a life-changing heart transplant but on two occasions her daughter Darcey, now 6 years old, had to use the Amazon device to call for help. Anderson says Darcey knew from a very young age that her mother had a “sore heart.” “I set up the Alexa so that if I passed out or was feeling unwell all she had to do was say, ‘Alexa, call help.’ She’s had to call on Alexa a couple of times, she even called an ambulance on her own and that time I was in a really bad way.” She adds: “ I’m so proud of her, she is a wee superstar.”

France is trying to hang onto a medieval painting with a cra zy backstory. The nation has blocked the export of a small, 13th-century work by the Ita lian artist Cimabue, a painting that hung unnoticed for deca des above a hotplate in a French woman's kitchen. An auctioneer spotted the painting as the elderly woman was preparing to sell her house, and Christ then sold for a staggering $26 million at auction earlier this the Guardian. The buyers are anonymous, but they're believed group of Chilean collectors based in the US. Now, however, they won't be able to own the painting after all.

The coins and a lump of unworked gold were originally discovered during excavations of an ancient settlement in Manching, and authorities have said they are considered the biggest trove of Celtic gold found in the 20th century. Authorities have examined 18 lumps of gold that were recovered in July. Each is believed to be the result of four coins being melted down, though

A 12-year-old Australian boy has pulled off a bold feat that drew international headlines: He stole his mom’s credit card and managed to fly to Bali, Indonesia, for a posh, four-day vacation before getting caught. As recounted in the Australian program A Current Affair, the boy did some research online and figured out he could fly alone without needing a letter from a parent on Jetstar Airways. He nabbed his mom’s credit card, tricked his grandmother into giving him his passport, took a train to the airport, and flew to Bali. “They just asked for my student ID and passport to prove that I’m over 12 and that I’m in secondary school,” says the boy, identified only as Drew. He then checked into a four-star hotel, having made reservations in advance, telling the clerk that his older sister would be joining him soon.

a further analysis is ongoing. “We know that about 70 gold coins have apparently been lost irretrievably in their cultural and historical significance,” said Bavaria’s state culture minister, Markus Blume. “But that means that of course there is still hope of perhaps being able to find the rest of the gold coins, and so the majority of the gold.”

Ethiopia claims it has smashed a world record in the name of climate change— and the tree planting isn’t even done. More than 353 million tree seedlin gs were planted across the country just 12 hours as part of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Green Legacy refores tation campaign. The campaign hopes to see 4 billion indigenous trees plant ed between May and October. Citizens had been encouraged to plant 200 mil lion trees but Ahmed tweeted that million had been planted after just hours. At the end of 12 hours, the country’s minster for innovation and chnology, Getahun Mekuria, announced 353,633,660 seedlings had gone the ground—more than five times as many trees as were planted in India 12 hours in 2017. Some schools and government offices closed to allow dents and civil servants to take part, which notes 2.6 billion trees have been planted across Ethiopia. The Guardian reports each citizen is asked plant at least 40 seedlings. The goal is to transform Ethiopia’s landscape, which is seeing degradation, soil erosion, deforestation, and droughts and flooding tied to agriculture. About 80% of Ethiopia’s population relies on agriculture to make a living, with the result that just 4% of land is now forested, pared to 30% at the end of the 19th century, according to Farm Africa. Al Jazeera, a recent study estimates that 1 trillion new trees could pull most 750 billion tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere—or about much as humans have released in the last 25 years—over several decades

And there he stayed, having a fine time while his panicked mom reported him as missing back home. It wasn’t until the boy posted a video of himself in the hotel pool that his vacation finally came to an end. “I was shocked and disgusted, there’s no emotion to feel what we felt when we found out that he’d left overseas,” says mom, per news.com.au. One reason she’s ticked: Her son had actually tried this stunt twice before, only to be turned away at the airport by Qantas and Garuda Airlines. Mom says she was informed her son’s passport would be flagged by federal authorities as a result, but that apparently never happened. In the aftermath, Jetstar promises to tighten up its policies. “He just doesn’t like the word no and that’s what I got, a kid in Indonesia.”

The German suspects - a telecoms engineer, an accountant, a shop manager, and a demolition firm employee haven’t given any information to authorities since their arrest, officials said. A judge ordered them kept in custody pending a possible indictment on charges of gang robbery, which can carry a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

France's culture ministry has declared the work to be a "national and has at least temporarily overruled the sale, reports USA ministry hopes to hang the painting permanently in the Louvre, now has 30 months to come up with the money to buy it. In me, the family of the unidentified woman who displayed the years, unaware of its origin or its worth, must continue to insured. They also owe a multi-million-dollar inheritance tax, likely have to work out a deal to pay it after the sale goes through.

A museum in southern France suffered a terrible blow when experts declared that over half its paintings are forgeries, The Terrus museum, dedicated to the work of painter Étienne Terrus, apparently knew nothing of the fakes until an art historian informed them. “It’s a catastrophe,” the mayor of Elne, where the museum resides, tells the Telegraph. “I put myself in the place of all the people who came to visit the museum, who saw fake works of art, who paid an entrance fee. It’s intolerable and I hope we find those responsible.” Police have taken the fakes and are trying to find those responsible.

US Teen Wins $3M at Fortnite World Cup

Art Expert Gives Museum Some Really Bad News

teen contestants Emil Bergquist dersen from Sweden and David Wang from Austria shared a $3 million prize.

Apparently 82 of the museum’s 140 works are phony, spotted at times because they contained buildings constructed after Terrus died in 1922. Acclaimed for his landscapes of French Catalonia, Terrus was close with artists Aristide Maillol and Henri Matisse and lived mostly in Elne, a town on the Tech River that’s less than three miles from the Mediterranean coast of Languedoc-Roussillon. The museum spent over $190,000 acquiring paintings they thought were his. But the Terrus likely isn’t alone: Art experts say at least one in five paintings in the world’s top museums may well be fake.

Three of them are also suspected of participating in 11 other robberies or attempted robberies between 2014 and 2022 in which supermarkets, a vehicle registration office, and a casino were targeted.

Multimillionaire Invites 10 People to Come Live in ’Paradise’

Sailor and His Dog Survive 2 Months Adrift at Sea

Looking to permanently while away your days overlooking the Tasman Sea and sipping on vino while watching "nice animals" with other "nice people"? Karl Reipen wants to hear from you. The Guardian reports the German multimillionaire has placed an ad seeking 10 people up to age 70 to come live in what he calls his "paradise," a 550-acre, $5.6 million estate in Awakino, on New Zealand's North Island. "If you are interested to live a life with a Group of Interesting people it can be a new life for you," reads the ad, which Stuff NZ reports was published twice in the New Zealand Herald. Reipen,

The contest featured 100 participants out of around 40 million who entered the on line competition. Giersdorf, who won the solo event in front of a packed stadium, says he plans to save the prize instead of going on a spending spree. ”All I want is a new desk and maybe a desk for my trophy. The pair drifted hopelessly until a Mexican tuna trawler came across them.

There are also stables and an in door equestrian center on-site, and Reipen says, "If you would like to bring your own horse it is possible." FRESH CORN AND TOMATO SALAD

This is a salad you want to make now, while corn and tomatoes are still in season, but I’ve found that frozen organic corn and greenhouse tomatoes work pretty darn well.

ASIAN NOODLES WITH PEANUT SAUCE

Ingredients: • 2 lbs. fresh or frozen organic corn

1 container grape tomatoes, chopped

1 small red onion, finely chopped

6 oz. mild crumbled cheese, like cotija or feta

1 package (5 oz.) organic baby arugula

1 teaspoon Fleur de Sel

1 teaspoon black pepper • 1 tablespoon capers, drained

2 teaspoons white balsamic vinegar

• 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Directions:

• If you’re using fresh corn, remove it from the ears, then pan saute it in a little olive oil, but leave it nice and crisp. If you can roast the ears of corn over some coals, even better. If you’re using frozen corn, pan saute in a little olive oil. Set the corn aside to cool.

• Mix the corn with all the other ingredients in a bowl. Cover and refrigerate.

• Right before serving, taste and season it again, mixing well. I think it’s best a little cooler than room temperature.

There’s something about Asian noodle dishes that make them incredibly addictive. They’re great hot or cold, and easy to make at home, which is important to me because I live in the boonies, about 30 miles from my favorite Asian restaurant. I store an arsenal of basic Asian ingredients in my pantry, so slapping this together is no effort at all. And if you don’t have Asian noodles around, chances are you’ve got a box of pasta, which works just as well.

To make this recipe gluten-free, I use Gluten Free pasta, and you can find gluten-free hoisin sauce in the Asian food section of most supermarkets.

Ingredients:

• 4 tablespoons creamy peanut butter

• 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce

• 2 teaspoons sesame oil

• 1 teaspoon Chinese chili garlic sauce (more, if you like it spicy!)

• 16 oz. package Chinese noodles or pasta

Directions:

• Combine the peanut butter, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, and chili garlic sauce in a bowl. Set it aside. I keep my peanut butter in the fridge once the jar is open, so sometimes it’s a bit thick. So I just zap it in the microwave for about 10 seconds to soften it up.

• Boil the noodles or pasta until al dente. Drain it and place it in a large bowl.

• Mix the noodles with the sauce.

Unfair Credit Card Fees

Crushing Hospitality’s Small Businesses

Last month, I joined Rhode Island restaurant owners and vendors on a trip to Washington, D.C. to discuss how rising credit card usage has placed an unjust financial strain on hospitality business owners and what can be done to solve the issue.

When dining at our favorite restaurants or enjoying a quality room service meal after a night of drinks at the hotel bar, we relish the pleasure of delicious meals and impeccable service. However, behind the scenes, smallbusiness owners face a significant financial burden every time a customer pays by credit card. These fees range from 2% to 4% for every transaction. This cost extends beyond the food and drink purchased; it also encompasses gratuities and meals tax collections. Now is the time to address this issue and provide small businesses with the choice to be transparent about credit card fees, fostering fairness for all.

Restaurant and hotel owners dutifully collect and remit over $1 billion in meals taxes each year, with approximately 80% of all payments made by credit card. Consequently, restaurants and hotels bear the responsibility of paying millions of dollars directly to the state, without receiving any financial benefit in return, and businesses face transaction fees every time a credit card is swiped, adding to their financial strain. In Rhode Island, I have heard from a number of RI Hospitality Association members, both in food service and in lodging, who paid $80,000 or more in credit card fees in 2022.

Although a 2% fee may seem negligible to the customer, the cumulative effect of this expense becomes burdensome

for business owners, especially when coupled with an increase in labor, goods, and supply chain costs.

In our daily lives, we receive numerous offers from credit card companies and banks enticing us to use their services, often with attractive incentives like cashback rewards and travel perks. Regrettably, the costs associated with these incentives are ultimately borne by small restaurants and hotels. To compensate for the added expense, restaurants and hotels are forced to raise prices, impacting all consumers regardless of their payment method. As a result, cash-paying customers, who may lack access to credit, end up subsidizing the benefits enjoyed by credit card users and paying higher prices.

According to the National Restaurant Association, interchange fees, also known as “swipe fees,” cost businesses $77.5 billion in 2021. And although the actual cost for credit card companies to handle transactions has substantially decreased over the past two decades, a lack of competition in the credit card processing network sector has resulted in credit card processing fees more than doubling in the last decade.

Given all of this, the RI Hospitality Association stands in support of the “Credit Card Competition Act” (H.R.3881/S.1838) to lower excessive swipe fees, one of the highest recurring costs for restaurant operators.

The bipartisan act mandates that at least two competing processing networks be enabled on every credit card, fostering competition, improving security and service, and reducing swipe fees. Should the act become law, it would benefit hospitality businesses and consumers, saving them an estimated $11 billion annually.

Please join RIHA in urging Congress to support the “Credit Card Competition Act” by sending an email to your local elected officials on the National Restaurant Association’s RestaurantsAct.com website at p2a.co/ qryw5um

Together, we can “level the paying field.”

Mango Madness

The following Mango Royale recipe is by Pailin “Pai” Chongchitnant, a trained chef, creator of the YouTube channel Pailin’s Kitchen, with over 1.5 million subscribers, author of Hot Thai Kitchen, and a TV show host on Gusto.

Pai has been featured in many major publications such as The New York Times, Serious Eats, and Bon Appetit, and she posts amazing Thai recipes on her Hot Thai Kitchen website.

If you love mangoes, and you love mango desserts, Pai uses her recipe for Mango Royale, aka Mango Float, absolute must-try! Mango Royale is a frozen dessert of Filipino descent, which takes advantage of peak-of-theseason mangoes. There’s no baking involved, and it’s so easy, it will be a go-to dessert for all of your summer parties.

Mango Royale, also known as mango float, is a classic Filipino mango dessert made with just 5 ingredients, including layers of sweet whipped cream, Manila mangoes, and graham crackers. It’s then frozen and served slightly thawed.

To create the ultimate Mango Royale, it’s important that you use high quality mangoes. You want them ripe, sweet, juicy, and even on the side of overripe. If they’re wrinkly with black spots on them, even better. This is partly because once the mangoes are frozen, their flavor and sweetness will be slightly dulled.

• 5.5 oz butter, unsalted

• 2 cups graham cracker crumbs

• 25 oz very ripe manila mango flesh or 5 medium-sized manila mangoes

• 1 tablespoon lime juice, optional

• 4.5 oz sweetened condensed milk (⅓ of a can)

• 1.5 cups whipping cream, cold

1. Spray the pie plate with non-stick spray, and if you want, you can line the bottom with parchment paper. (The parchment isn’t totally necessary, but it does make it easier to remove the dessert from the dish.)

2. For the brown butter graham crust, place the graham cracker crumbs into a large mixing bowl. (2 cups graham cracker crumbs)

3. Brown the butter by melting it in a stainless steel pot or skillet over medium heat. Once melted, keep stirring until the butter becomes very dark brown and looks almost burnt, about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat. (Note: There will be a lot of foam on top of the melted butter, this is normal, but if you keep stirring, you will be able to see the color of the butter through the foam.) (5.5 oz butter)

4. Pour the brown butter over the graham crumbs and mix well.

5. Put about ⅔ of the graham crumbs into the pie plate and spread them around, then press the crumbs up the sides of the plate making them a little less than ¼ inch thick. Next, press them into the bottom of the pie plate, firmly. You can take more of the reserved crumbs to fill

the crust as needed, as it’s most important that you have an even, sturdy bottom crust. Chill the crust in the fridge while you make the filling.

6. For the mango filling: Slice mango cheeks off the fruit, then use a paring knife to score the flesh into ½-inch cubes and use a spoon to scoop them out into a large mixing bowl. You can remove the flesh around the seeds, or just snack on them - as long as you have at least (25 oz) of flesh. (25 oz very ripe manila mango flesh)

7. Use a gloved hand to squish the mangoes until they look like a chunky mango sauce (about half chunks half puree). Taste, then add lime juice if it feels like it could use a little extra acidity. (1 tablespoon lime juice)

8. For the condensed whip: Combine condensed milk and cold whipping cream in a medium mixing bowl and use a hand mixer to beat them on medium to medium-low speed until firm peaks form. To check for doneness, lift your beater, and whatever sticks to your beater should be able to hold its shape against gravity with gentle shaking. Be careful not to over-whip; once your beater starts leaving clear trails you’re almost there, so pay attention and check often. (4.5 oz sweetened condensed milk,1.5 cups whipping cream)

9. Build the pie: The layers are built in this order: cream -> mango -> crumbs -> cream -> mango -> crumbs.

10. Spread about half of the cream into the chilled crust, then spoon half of the mangoes over the cream, followed by about half of the remaining crumbs. Repeat the layers with the remaining filling, and if you don’t end up using everything, that’s fine. You can use whatever’s left to make a mini version.

11. Freeze overnight (at least 8 hours), then allow to thaw for 1 hour at room temp, or thaw in the fridge overnight before serving. If your schedule allows, you can also serve it after 5-6 hours of freezing. Essentially, you want to serve it semi-frozen or partially thawed.

Tip: If freezing for more than 1 night, to prevent it from drying out and absorbing freezer smell, it’s recommended that you cover it with a double layer of plastic wrap, after the exterior has firmed up.

50 IS THE NEW 30

How to Train Smarter, not Harder, and Maximize Your Time in the Gym

Let’s face some facts here, just like death and taxes, we are all going to continue to age. I like to say more seasoned, like a good stew or a fine wine. But, the facts are that we are getting older every day. As well as lovely mother nature is, she wants you to ‘kick the bucket’ to make way for the next generation. Facts are facts, and you can’t dispute them. However, as an exercise scientist, we can manipulate many variables so that we can slow down the aging process. Now, before you go off half cock and say, “this is about steroids and HGH,” it’s actually not. There are other ways to “play” with the aging card, while we train hard and stay healthy. Or, should I say train smarter not harder. How do I know? Because I live it every day. As of summer of this year, I personally turned 50! Yes, the big 50! I’m half a century old, as they say. To put that into perspective, my father passed at age 48. When I was kid, I thought 50 was old. Now, you see actors like Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon approaching the same age. Times have changed because people, in general, are more health conscious. To add more to the perspective, I have been working out faithfully for 38 years, and have been personally training people since 1987! So, you could say I have some knowledge, flight time, and It’s definitely not my first rodeo.

Let’s discuss the variables you can manipulate with your workouts. Seven years ago, one of my top clients passed away due to cancer. He made it to 80 years old and would have reached 100, I believe, if he didn’t get sick. David A. was a great client, mentor, and friend. I started training him when he was 70, and stopped when he was 77, due to his disease. The one statement he used to say to me was, “it’s all about moderation, Kevin.” What moderation is at age 30 is different than at age 40, and so on.” At 70 years old, he would train 3 x times a week with me, play single’s tennis, 2 x a week, and walk 2 x per week for 1 hour. He could hit pads for 5 3s, after doing a Burn With Kearns workout.

Variable 1 - Everything in moderation.

This principle is simple. You are not 20 years old anymore. You need to treat your body like a temple and what you put in is what you get out. When you were 20 years old, you had the time, energy, and hormone levels to spend 3 hours doing a chest workout. You blink and

you are my age, with kids, a mortgage, and retirement ( I personally don’t believe in this ). So, when you hit the gym, you need to be realistic. My workouts tend to be 30 minutes to 60 minutes or more. They include a moving warm up (5 to 10 minutes), interval HIT style training, functional strength, and a 5 to 10 minute cool down. The great part about this style of training is you can hit more muscles than you knew you had, increase muscle endurance, increase cardiovascular conditioning, all while intensity goes up and time goes down. My best time has been 30 exercises in less than 30 minutes and I’m whipped, but can still work.

Variable 2 - Change is good - mix it up.

The two phrases I absolutely loathe in fitness are “II usually” and “I always,” followed by, do this workout. How can you expect results? Try something new. I started doing yoga in 2008, due to plantar fasciitis in both my feet. How did I get that? From running 340 concrete stairs, 3 to 4 x a week, for 1 hour. Yoga fixed it and I was able to run on trails within 1 year. It was the best decision I have ever made for my overall health and wellness. Over time, I realized that yoga was a great workout, not only for my body, but for my mind. The other added benefits are:

increased flexibility

increased range on motion increased mobility

increase mental toughness (trust me when it’s 105 degrees for 90 minutes you’ll understand) new exercises and moves that you can bring into the gym

Variable 3 - It’s not necessary to kill it in the gym, everyday.

This is a tough one for us trainers and athletes. We think we all need to crush ourselves during our workouts. The

Shop In RI 20
20 Shop In RI

fact that you are working out should be enough. Every time you train, it’s a deposit into your Fitness IRA. If you don’t have an hour to train, train for 30 minutes; it’s better than zero. This is a concept that really has to sink in. I have a client who’s my age, and after losing 40 lbs., is now about 200 lbs. He has a shoulder injury that we have rehabbed, as well. It’s taken over a year for him to perform 8 pull ups. This is amazing to me, given where we started. He, unfortunately, has it in his head that he should be able to do 10 with ease. Seriously, think about it. How many 51 year olds at 200 lbs that run a 30 million dollar company with over 100 employees can do even a single pull up. Take the small victories. The fact you can train daily is a gift. It’s not possible to crush every workout. Just shut up and train.

Variable 4 - Teach an old dog new tricks. Joseph Pilates was ahead of his time and could have competed in multiple athletic endeavors. In the ’70’s, American footballers were taking ballet to help with their balance, agility, and flexibility. In my business, I work with hockey players , baseball players, football players, lacrosse, and combat fitness. What is that, you ask? It’s MMA drills and skills, as well as striking pads to develop endurance, spatial awareness, balance, agility, and mental toughness. Your next question may be, why? To prevent staleness and to shock your body. What will I try today? dance, surfing, kiteboarding, or maybe kayaking because the sky’s the limit, and these activities not only stimulate the body, but the mind as well.

Variable 5 - Yin Yang, you must have soft with hard. I like using steel and iron, as well, but I also get a great workout from resistance bands. Try using a band workout for “Unloading the muscles,” after a heavy weights day, the next day. We call it our “Rubber and Steel workout.” Years ago, I thought bands were for little old ladies. Then, I realized that you can get a full body workout and mimic the same exercises in the gym, with simple resistance bands. My bands have traveled with me from Alaska to Okinawa, and everywhere in between. One particular time, I was in the UK teaching a certification for Yarm Martial arts. While in between sessions. I went to a park with my band and strapped it to a pole. As I’m working out, someone’s dog ran between me. He apologized and then looked at me and asked, “Is that you Coach Kearns?” He was one of my readers from Fighters Only. It’s the reason why when you go to China, they are all doing Tai Chi (Big hint here!!!)

Variable 6 - Listen to your joints. When in doubt, listen to what your body tells you. If running on a hard surface hurts, try trail running or hiking. Like box jumps ? Swap out the box for a high quality fitness trampoline like JumpSport, or try them

on sand at the beach. This is a real “ Uh HuH” moment. When I first was introduced to fitness trampolines, I immediately saw the benefit. I love ploy metrics, but man, it does a number on your joints. I can get the same explosive power with these lovely gems without feeling I went 5 rounds with a UFC champion. The other added benefit is the recovery and regeneration properties. After training, lactic acid builds up into the muscles and that’s why you feel sore. Bouncing on a quality trampoline helps flush that out, as well as stimulate the lymphatic system to stave off illness.

Variable 7 - Eat a rainbow. There’s a reason why foods are different colors. They have different vitamins and nutrients. The Asian diet is to eat with the seasons. People in the Medditerian will eat a salad with every meal. We, as modern humans, fall into a pattern of eating the same thing, day in and day out. My exercise physiology professor once said, “As you age, you either have to decrease calories and maintain activity or increase activity and maintain calories.” What he was referring to was losing muscle mass as we age. Mix up your foods and eat differently each day. You need to keep your metabolism on its toes, too.

The good news is that you can still build muscle mass at any age and stave off Mother Nature.

Living The Best You, As You Age

We see so many magazine articles, television commercials, and social media ads about how to look younger and how to avoid and prevent wrinkles, but there is so much more to aging well. None of us want gray hair or wrinkle lines, but again, there is so much more to living the best you, as you age.

Aging well and aging gracefully shouldn’t mean you want to look like you are still in your 20s. It’s about living your best life and having the physical and mental health to enjoy it. Here are some tips to help you feel the best you, as you age.

Be kind to your skin.

I, personally, love the sun, and a little bit of sun is good for you, as it offers natural vitamin D. However, we all know what too much sun can do to your skin and overall health. Feed your skin nourishment. Drink plenty of water. Take a collagen supplement. Keep your skin moist. Your skin will smile if you use caffeine creams, or rub natural lemon on it.

Exercise regularly.

I’ve written many articles on the benefits of exercise. I’ve mentioned how it lowers the risk of diseases, such as heart disease and cancer, and helps you retain your mobility, longer. It also lowers stress and improves sleep, bone health, and our mood. As we age, older adults should also focus on activities that include balance, as well as strength exercises. But don’t wait until you age to exercise. Everyone from children, young adults, and older adults should always be moving. This is how we not only keep the outside looking and feeling good, it’s how we keep the inside healthy.

Be mindful of your diet.

Healthy foods are the way to go when it comes to aging gracefully. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. These can be eaten fresh, frozen, or canned. Canned is my least favorite because usually canned items are loaded with sodium and other unnatural preservatives to keep them fresh. Frozen is a great option if you can’t buy

24 Shop In RI

fresh because when food is frozen, it’s usually frozen right away, and the nutrients are also frozen, which keeps them just as good as if you were eating them fresh. You should also have lean protein, such as fish and beans. The same holds true for fruits and vegetables, as it does for frozen fish. You should have at least three ounces of whole-grain cereals, breads, rice, or pasta, every week. It’s best to stay away from processed foods, refined sugars, and unhealthy fats.

Stay active.

I have read so many studies that say the same thing; a sedentary lifestyle leads to an increased risk of chronic illness, and potentially an early death. You must keep moving. Some options for moving, especially as you age, are going for a walk or a hike, using a stationary bike, walking extra around the supermarket, and doing leg lifts, while sitting and watching television, etc.

Lower your stress.

This is so important, but might not seem that easy. Stress contributes to premature aging, wrinkles, and even a higher risk of heart disease. There are many proven ways to relieve stress. Try relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, or a simple breathing exercise. Get enough sleep. Talk to a friend. Venting is so helpful, and of course exercise, exercise, and exercise!

If you are a smoker, do everything you can to quit.

Smoking not only damages your insides, it is so awful for your skin. Smoking and alcohol have both been shown to cause premature aging and increase the risk of disease. When it comes to alcohol the recommendation is one drink per day for women and two for men.

Find new hobbies.

Having something you do gives you a purpose. Having something you love to do is a win/win. People who have hobbies are happier, and that leads to a longer life.

Drink plenty of water.

I’ve written about many times. Water is a natural detoxifier. Water also improves your energy levels and brain function. Coincidentally, it also helps to keep your skin healthier and reduces signs of aging.

Aging is a privilege. Aging gracefully adds beauty to your life. It’s more about being healthy and being able to enjoy life at whatever age you are. It’s not about the gray hair or the wrinkles, it’s about how you feel. I can’t stress enough that you must keep moving your body. You have one life. Live while you are alive!

Don’t let that be you. Life is short, but you get two lives. The second life begins when you realize you only have one.

Start living your second life!

Fitness Tips

The summer months bring sunshine, beach trips, and a relaxed atmosphere. While it’s important to savor the season, it’s equally crucial to maintain your healthy habits, and to stay on track with your food and workouts. Balancing indulgence with mindful choices will allow you to enjoy the best of both worlds.

portions, choose healthier options when available, and savor the flavors, mindfully. Moderation is key to maintaining a balanced approach, without feeling deprived.

5. Make Outdoor Workouts Fun:

Take advantage of the pleasant weather and explore outdoor workout options. Go for a hike, try paddleboarding, or organize a friendly game of beach volleyball. Outdoor activities not only provide a change of scenery, but also offer a refreshing break from the gym, while keeping you active and energized.

6. Buddy Up for Accountability:

In this article, we’ll explore some valuable tips to help you stay on track during the summer months, without sacrificing the joy and fun the season brings.

1. Plan and Prioritize:

Creating a plan and setting clear priorities will help you stay focused on your health goals. Schedule your workouts in advance and treat them as nonnegotiable appointments. Similarly, plan your meals and ensure you have nutritious options available. This proactive approach will prevent impulsiveness and keep you aligned with your objectives.

2. Hydration is Key:

With the warmer weather, it’s vital to stay properly hydrated. Keep a water bottle handy and sip throughout the day. Hydration not only keeps you refreshed, but also aids digestion and helps curb unnecessary snacking. Spice up your water by infusing it with fruits or herbs for added flavor and appeal.

3. Embrace Seasonal Produce:

Summer offers an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. Make the most of it by incorporating them into your meals. Experiment with colorful salads, refreshing smoothies, and grilled veggies. By enjoying seasonal produce, you nourish your body with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, while adding variety to your diet.

4. Choose Smart Indulgences:

Summer is synonymous with tempting treats like ice cream and barbecues. While it’s okay to indulge occasionally, make conscious choices. Opt for smaller

Find a workout buddy or enlist a friend who shares your health goals. Exercising together creates accountability and makes workouts more enjoyable. You can motivate each other, try new activities, and share the journey. A supportive companion can help you stay focused and committed during the summer months.

7. Maintain a Flexible Routine:

While consistency is essential, it’s also important to embrace flexibility during the summer. Don’t stress if your routine shifts due to vacations or social events. Adjust your workouts and meal plans accordingly, finding ways to incorporate physical activity and make healthier choices, within the context of your summer schedule.

8. Practice Mindful Eating:

Amidst summer festivities, practice mindful eating. Pay attention to your body’s hunger and fullness cues. Slow down, savor each bite, and listen to your body’s signals. This mindfulness will help you avoid overeating, and also help you to make conscious choices that align with your goals.

Staying on track with your food and workouts during the summer months is entirely achievable, with a mindful and balanced approach. By planning ahead, staying hydrated, embracing seasonal produce, making smart indulgences, enjoying outdoor activities, seeking accountability, maintaining flexibility, and practicing mindful eating, you can strike a harmonious balance between your health goals and summer enjoyment. Remember, it’s all about finding joy in a healthy lifestyle, while making lasting memories. So go ahead, soak up the sun, and embrace the best of summer, while staying on track!

Dare to Dream

2nd Annual Yellow Ribbon Gala

Continuing its mission of helping veterans and their families lead more productive lives, the Dare to Dream Ranch in Foster, recently announced its 2nd Annual Yellow Ribbon Gala that takes place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick.

This event happens on Saturday, September 16, 2023, from 5:30 PM to 10:30 PM. Besides dinner and dancing, there will be live and silent auctions, remarks from Ranch Founder and Executive Vice President Karen Dalton, the Quilt of Valor Presentations, which honors veterans who have served, and a keynote speaker. Plus, there will be a presentation of the 2023 Cory Zaranek Community Service Commitment to Excellence Award—given to the individual or individuals that have shown exemplary commitment to moving their mission forward through their dedicated volunteerism.

Last year’s inaugural event raised $22,000. A portion of the proceeds went to aid veteran-owned businesses, and the remainder funded the Ranch’s mission.

Dalton said that the Ranch aids veterans and their families with various programs to address emotional challenges like post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, military sexual trauma, mild traumatic brain injury, and stroke recovery.

Her facility, located on 11 acres in Foster, a stone’s throw from the Connecticut border, offers such activities as woodworking, gardening, beekeeping, agri-therapy, equine therapy, and fly fishing.

Dalton has been very fortunate with numerous donations and grants over the past several years to continue funding its mission. The increasing need to help more veterans currently exceeds what they would like to accomplish for helping out these groups, according to Dalton.

“I want to further my mission of providing and expanding programs to help as many military veterans and their families as possible,” said Dalton. “We have a lofty goal of raising $10 million dollars, to not only build an indoor health and wellness arena, a teaching kitchen, and function rooms for events, but also to build a farming and education center. This would assist in reinforcing the mission, purpose, structure, and comradery taught in the military, and the mission, purpose, structure, and comradery taught in farming,” Dalton explained..

The Health & Wellness Arena will have two medical offices for massage, reflexology, hypnotherapy, eight stalls, and an indoor riding arena, so our clients do not

have to cancel due to weather, as well as a mental health clinic for licensed behavioral health professionals. She added that several organizations have already donated to this cause. Dalton is now asking the community to pledge their support, so they can reach their goal and help more in need.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 1.7 million veterans are dealing with some type of mental health issue or issues. That is one primary reason why events such as the Gala are important. Monies raised will go toward programs to help provide needed services to those who served and their supportive families.

Those programs can also open the veterans up to express their feelings and experiences to others, to better understand their struggles.

“Veterans tend to open up to other veterans because they have often witnessed the same or similar events as they have,” Dalton said.

Dare to Dream Ranch, a non-profit military organization, now in its eighth year, offers alternative-therapy programs for service members veterans and their families, with PTSD, anxiety, depression, military sexual trauma, mild traumatic brain injury, and stroke recovery. They work with men, women, and military children. Each year, they work with hundreds, between all of their programs.

Behind the scenes, they assist with financial challenges, housing and food insecurity issues, and more. There are many organizations that offer different programs, but when clients can’t get support, they reach out to Dare to Dream Ranch.

One veteran, who was a sole provider for his family, suffered a stroke, and Dare to Dream Ranch raised close to $15,000 through GoFundMe to help pay medical expenses and household expenses, allowing the veteran to focus on his recovery. They also helped a family with financial challenges through their resources, and helped with food insecurity for our homeless veterans.

In addition to attending The Gala, companies and individuals are encouraged to either sponsor, donate,

and/or volunteer. Dalton is actively seeking donations of gift cards from local merchants, including restaurants, retail, service providers, and in-kind services. They offer several sponsorship levels that include various benefits, ranging from signage at the Ranch and social media mentions, to complementary event tickets.

A very special thanks to Dave DelBonis of Precision Home Lending in Cranston, who is the Chair of this event.

Tickets for this event, as well as additional details about Dare to Dream Ranch, may be purchased by visiting Eventbrite and searching Dare to Dream.

Additional information may be found by either visiting the Ranch’s website at : daretodreamranch.org, or by contacting Ranch at: 401-919-2059 or dare2dreamranchri@gmail.com.

Meet The Dream Team: Tim Richard

Each month, Shop in RI Magazine will profile one member of a new weekly business networking group called “The Dream Team,” that meets in Smithfield.

This week, we profile The Dream Team’s chapter vice president, Tim Richard, of Esten and Richard Insurance.

The Woonsocket-based agency is a family-operated company, specializing in business insurance for clients, locally and beyond. The firm has been serving clients for more than four decades and continues navigating through numerous industry trends.

Tim has been with the firm for 11 years. He envisioned being in sports marketing before discovering that sales would become his true calling. He gave insurance a chance and has never looked back on the decision.

Richard believes that while business insurance is not as personal as home and auto insurance (which they also offer), it’s still very important to have. He noted that it’s not just having insurance that matters, but it’s having the right coverage that does.

“Many people think when rates go up that it’s just the cost of doing business,” he said. “Just because you have coverage for your business, doesn’t mean that either you or the company will be covered in case of a claim. That’s why it is vital to have an agent who reviews your policies regularly, to ensure that if something happens, you are not impacted twice.”

They recently partnered with World Insurance to provide additional services and support. There is no break in local services or even the name, according to Richard. They are licensed to help clients in all 50 states.

Tim said that there were several reasons for joining “The Dream Team.”

“I have known many of the other members for years and have good business relationships with them.

It’s an opportunity to share my business with them, and also a chance to further educate them about our services,” he said.

“The Dream Team” currently has 20 members in their group. They meet every Wednesday morning, from 7:00 AM until 8:30 AM, at the Home2Suites Hilton, on Douglas Pike (Rte. 7) in Smithfield, across from Laura’s Bar and Grill. The group is looking to grow its chapter and are interested in meeting professionals from HVAC, event planning, personal injury attorneys and photography.

Further information about the group may be found by contacting either Group President Rocco Elgar at 401-265-0857 or at therockhbi@msn.com, or Vice President Tim Richard at 401-766-4200 or at tim@estenandrichardinsurance.com.

3 Steps to Handle Market Volatility as You Approach Retirement

No one likes to watch their investments lose money, but downward market volatility can feel particularly scary for people who plan to retire in the near future. Their anxiety is understandable. They’ve spent their careers building their nest eggs and now – at a time when they plan to give up their income-producing jobs – they face the prospect of living off less money than they had envisioned.

Fortunately, it’s rarely as simple as that. As with all things financial, it’s important to look at the big picture. If you’re nearing retirement and worried about market volatility, keep these factors in mind:

1. Concentrate on your financial goals.

No one can say with certainty what will happen to stocks over the next week, month, year or decade. But what may be more certain is your financial goals for those timeframes. Ensure your portfolio is designed to help you achieve your key priorities, rather than to hit a specific market outcome. Remember that timing the markets is rarely successful because there are so many unknown factors influencing how stocks move.

2. Keep your emotions in check.

Market corrections, dips and swings are inevitable for investors in the short term, so it’s important to look beyond the daily hype and headlines. Instead, watch for broad, persistent trends that could provide opportunities or challenges for your overall financial situation. As you ponder adjustments to your portfolio, remember that while you can’t control the market, you can control your reaction to it.

3. Reassess your portfolio according to your retirement date and risk tolerance.

Two items that are more in your control are your risk tolerance and retirement date. Keep in mind that each person has an individual comfort level with taking risks. You may find that your ability to handle market swings varies over time, particularly if you’ve experienced volatility in the past. Big market moves or dips may be a good time to step back and evaluate your portfolio according to when you anticipate needing to generate income from your investments:

• If you have a decade or more before retirement, prioritize building your investments using a diversified asset mix. Investing regularly in the market could help volatility work to your benefit, as you have more time to ride out short-term turbulence and overcome potential losses. As you refine your retirement plans, calculate how much money you need to live the lifestyle you want, while also preparing for unexpected expenses such as healthcare. Knowing how much you need to retire can help you stay confident in your financial strategy amid market uncertainty.

• If you are within a few years of retirement, you likely are more sensitive to short-term market moves. At this point, you may consider gradually adjusting your portfolio to reduce your level of risk. If you wait until retirement to adjust your investment mix, you could be surprised by untimely market volatility or a downturn. If this happens, it could leave you with less money in retirement compared to your plans, forcing you to modify your goals or lifestyle. If the market is experiencing a correction, you may want to wait for it to rebound (as it historically has) before making adjustments. Making changes immediately amid volatility could lock in possible losses.

• If you are already retired, be patient and maintain your diversified investment strategy. If the potential for a downturn or increased volatility makes you nervous, consider reallocating your portfolio accordingly. Keep in mind that even in retirement it may make sense to have part of your investment mix focused on growth. Today’s long life expectancies mean that you need to be prepared for the likelihood that living costs, particularly healthcare, will be higher in the later decades of your retirement.

If you have concerns about the effect of market volatility on your investments, you are not alone. If you want additional support, consider consulting a financial advisor who can review the details of your unique financial situation. Together you can determine if your portfolio is on track to reach your goals.

Entering Retirement Solo?

Here are Tips for Managing Your Finances as You Grow Older

Approximately 23 million Americans ages 65 and older are single, divorced or widowed, according to the most recent data available from the U.S. Census Bureau. That means there are many people in this country who are planning their retirement on their own, without the help of a spouse or partner.

If you are a part of this group – whether it is your choice or the result of unexpected circumstances – there are unique considerations you may need to keep in mind as you navigate your path to retirement on your own. The following tips can help you craft your retirement plan:

1. Align your lifestyle with your savings: Retiring solo may mean you get to call the shots on how you want to spend your time. Whether it’s traveling, volunteering, visiting family, or working part-time, think about how you want to fill your days – then consider how you’ll fund your new lifestyle.

2. Plan for health care expenses: Decide how you’d like to handle health care expenses, including your possible need for long-term care. Depending on your situation, insurance coverage (including Medicare, Medicaid and long-term care insurance), health savings accounts and investment savings may be part of the solution.

3. Update your estate plan: Review and make any necessary adjustments to your estate plan and beneficiaries on key accounts to ensure they align with your wishes. Pick a trusted family member or friend to serve as your financial and health care proxy. An attorney can help you assign someone to make decisions for you in the event you can no longer act on your own.

4. Consider your mortgage: If you have a mortgage on your current home, think about whether you’d like to pay it off before or during retirement. Consider your tax strategy, cash flow needs today and down the road, and whether you intend to downsize or move in retirement as you make your decision.

5. For those who are divorced: If you were previously married, additional considerations apply as you think about your retirement plans:

a. If you receive alimony payments, be aware that the amount you receive may be modified — or even end — once your ex-spouse reaches retirement age. On the other hand, if you are the one who makes alimony payments, make sure you understand how much you’re obligated to continue paying in retirement. The terms were likely spelled out in your divorce settlement.

b. You may also consider claiming Social Security benefits based on the earnings of your ex-spouse. You can do so as early as age 62. However, the longer you delay claiming benefits (up to your full retirement age), the larger your monthly benefit will be. Your claim has no impact on the amount of your ex-spouse’s Social Security benefits.

6. For widows and widowers: Retiring single is likely different than what you envisioned during your married years, and you may still be going through an adjustment period. The following tips can help you as you reframe your retirement years:

a. If you were not closely involved in managing household finances, enlist a trusted family member or financial professional to review your current situation. Track down passwords to all your accounts and make an updated plan to address your current needs and retirement goals.

b. If you collected an insurance settlement following the passing of your spouse, focus on investing that money effectively to help generate income during your retirement. You can also claim Social Security survivor benefits if you are at least age 60. You can decide later to begin collecting benefits based on your own work record.

How you decide to spend your retirement days is personal – so your retirement plan should be too. Turn to a tax professional and financial advisor for guidance on what steps to take next.

Outdoor Escapes New England Expands into East Bay

Second location will help serve customers in that area of RI.

Due to the overwhelming success of its Johnston location located just off Rte. 295, Outdoor Escapes New England will be opening a second location in East Bay.

They will unveil the new location in a “soft” opening sometime in the fall with a “full” opening next spring. The new location’s address is being kept under wraps until the initial opening draws closer.

Co-owner Chris Corsinetti said the explosion of growth prompted the expansion. He said that despite the popularity of its Johnston locale, they also want to bring their products and services to their customers who reside in the East Bay.

“We understand that our customers in that area of the state are not necessarily going to come to us, so we will go to them,” Corsinetti said. “We saw there was a definable need to have a bigger presence in the East Bay. This will make it easier to service them in a way they will be satisfied.”

In anticipation of its grand opening, Outdoor Escapes New England recently hired a few more employees to handle affairs there. They are training their new employees so they can, “hit the ground running,” as Chris said. They are currently looking for truck drivers (they now have four delivery trucks in their fleet), in sales (inside and outside) and managing the yard. Please contact them for more details and how to apply.

Another reason Outdoor Escapes New England has flourished in the last several years is their commitment to customer service. With their staff, there is no pressure to buy and they are experienced to make the process flow smoothly.

They offer numerous products which now includes the Unilock line, the most recognizable name in the hardscape industry.

“It’s a well-known name that is recognizable, has a great reputation, and is always in high demand,” he said. “Unilock is one of the many products we carry that will fit perfectly in any landscape design.”

Chris said the family business began nearly five decades ago, in 1974, when their dad, Anthony, Sr., started Hartford Paving Corp. They began doing driveways and small parking areas. After a few years, their company expanded.

They also do site work, utility work, roads, and many other construction services. Some of the contracts that they held include work done for the State of Rhode Island, many

50 Shop In RI

municipalities and many utility companies. They are one of the preferred paving companies of many general contractors.

In the decades following, plans for new exit ramps to their location sparked Anthony Sr.’s idea of a new business venture…a material yard. They opened Outdoor Escapes New England in 2003.

They stock many different types of pavers and other such materials for the do-it-yourselfer and the seasoned professionals. Four of their more popular lines are Techo-Bloc, Nicolock, Belgard and Unilock that are used for such services as retaining walls and paving stones. Customers can either select and drive away with what they need. Or, they can deliver it to the home or job site. Besides Rhode Island, they also have clients throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut.

As for the do-it-yourselfer, Chris said they can be both a blessing and a curse. He noted many of those home improvement shows make some of the projects easier than they actually are. He tells people those projects are not as easy as they appear.

Those are done by people who

have experience in those areas. The “weekend warrior” will often lack the tools, knowledge or understanding regarding what truly goes into making those projects work, he said.

Whether one needs materials to pave over a driveway, redo a patio or build a fire pit (one of the more popular plans for homeowners), they have the materials necessary to ensure it looks nice and is also durable.

Outdoor Escapes New England is a one-stop-shop for all contractors and homeowners, offering a complete line of landscaping and masonry materials, as well as the tools and equipment needed to get the job done. Their products include: bluestone flagging and treads, natural wall stone and veneers, thin veneers, manufactured stone, brick, pavers and segmental retaining walls, and much more.

Their experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly staff will be happy to assist you in selecting the right product to meet your needs and expectations to make your home improvement project a success.

They are open weekdays from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Saturday from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM and are closed on Sunday.

Why Is it a BAD Idea to Caulk the Gaps in Between Shingle Siding?

My name is Tom Lopatosky. I’m the President of LOPCO Contracting (www.LopcoContracting.com) & I’m honored to have the opportunity to talk to you about home improvement on a monthly basis. I love answering your questions! Please send them to tom@LopcoContracting.com or call 401-270-2664. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this column!

Recently, I had a client message me with concerns of there being gaps in between the shingle siding on his family’s home, after we had conducted our prep and were well on our way through applying the finish coat.

While he was SUPER complimentary on how hard the crew had worked on things, he was not quite sure if they had properly caulked items that should have been caulked, due to the noticeable gaps in between the shingles on the home’s siding.

Caulking the gaps in between shingle siding may seem like a quick and easy solution to improve the appearance and weatherproofing of your home. However, there are several reasons why it is actually considered a bad idea:

Impaired Ventilation: Shingle siding is designed to allow for proper ventilation, allowing moisture to escape and preventing the buildup of condensation. By caulking the gaps, you disrupt this natural airflow, leading to potential moisture problems such as rot, mold, and mildew. These issues can compromise the structural integrity of your home and even pose health risks.

Trapped Moisture: Shingle siding is designed to shed water and allow it to flow downward. However, if you caulk the gaps, water can become trapped behind the shingles, leading to moisture infiltration. This trapped moisture can cause the shingles to deteriorate prematurely and result in costly repairs or replacements.

Decreased Durability: Shingle siding is intended to expand and contract with temperature changes. By caulking the gaps, you restrict this natural movement, which can lead to warping, buckling, and cracking of the shingles. Ultimately, this compromises the durability and lifespan of your siding, necessitating premature repairs or replacements.

Aesthetic Issues: Caulking the gaps in between shingle siding can create an unnatural and unsightly appearance. Shingles are designed to overlap and create a visually appealing pattern. Applying caulk disrupts this pattern and can make your siding appear disjointed and unattractive.

Furthermore, caulk may change color over time, leading to an even more noticeable and unappealing appearance.

Maintenance Challenges: Shingle siding requires periodic maintenance, such as repainting or restaining. When you caulk the gaps, you create additional obstacles for future maintenance tasks. Removing and reapplying caulk can be time-consuming and difficult, and it may damage the shingles in the process. This can make future maintenance tasks more complicated and costly.

Potential Damage: When it comes time to replace or repair your shingle siding, caulking can cause significant damage and increase the complexity of the project. Removing caulk from between the shingles can be challenging, and it may require the use of harsh chemicals or scraping tools. This process can scratch or gouge the shingles, leading to additional repairs or the need for complete siding replacement.

Caulking the gaps in between shingle siding is generally considered a bad idea due to the negative consequences it can have on ventilation, moisture management, durability, aesthetics, maintenance, and potential damage.

While it may seem like a simple solution, it can result in significant issues and expenses - both short and long term! If coming across a situation such as this, it is always advisable to consult with a professional who is able to provide expert advice on the best course of action for your specific situation as it relates to shingle siding.

Vested Interest in K9s Protecting

Law Enforcement Dogs

There are numerous resources available to law enforcement agencies designed to protect and serve. Technology adapts to keep officers safe and at the forefront of stopping crime. They also attend seminars, conferences, and demonstrations aimed at both educating and enlightening departments with the latest innovations and techniques. It is all to assist in their efforts to keep communities safe.

K9 Ryken of the Cranston RI Police Department, partner to Officer Nathan Bagshaw

One aspect that often gets overlooked is the fourlegged protectors. K9 dogs are also in need of training to keep them sharp. These heroes need to be as safe and guarded as their two-legged partners.

That is why a nationwide non-profit organization that began more than a decade ago, works to donate bullet and stab protective vests to these animals. Vested Interest in K9s works with law enforcement agencies across the country to get these life-saving vests to the K9s.

The efforts are made possible by founder and president, Sandy Marcal. She is an avid dog lover who saw the need for police departments to find suitable protection for their four-legged protectors.

The main reason for the need may either surprise or sadden you, according to Marcal.

“Many cities and towns don’t have the funds available for them,” Marcal said. “When these vests were first available over 20 years ago, they cost about $750 each. Most departments did not have money in their budgets to purchase them. They are more expensive today, but the materials used by our manufacturer are lightweight, made in the USA, and are custom-fitted for each dog. Through the efforts of 60-plus volunteers, we work diligently and have provided a vest for every K9 applicant who has completed our grant criteria over the past 13 years.”

Locally, the Cranston Police Department were recently the proud recipients of two ballistic vests

for their K9s, Czar and Ryken. Marcal said that a local woman made the donation for Czar, whose partner is Officer Shane O’Donnell and Vested Interest in K9s made the donation for Ryken, in memory of Officer Nathan Bagshaw’s first partner, who passed away, K9 Lex.

Marcal was excited to see the K9s and their partners arrive to show her the fruits of their labor.

“It excites me to see these dogs wearing their new vests,” she said. “It gives me a great feeling inside, knowing the work we are doing is helping others, particularly those who are out there protecting our communities.”

Since they began in 2009, Vested Interest in K9s has donated more than 5,000 vests nationwide, over 2,300 K9 opioid reversal NARCAN Kits, and $150,000-plus in medical first-aid kits, as well as more than $300,000 in K9 medical insurance premiums through their “Healthcare for K9 Heroes” program. They are always looking to help other departments near and far who have a need, but may not know the next steps.

Law enforcement agencies can qualify their K9s for a vest by visiting the website at vik9s.org. The department or handler submits the required information, which is reviewed by the organization and processed upon completion. There is no limit as to the number of vests a department may request. It’s based on the following qualifications; the K9 being a minimum age of 20 months, actively working in the USA, and being certified with their current handler.

There are several more ways the public can offer their support once they visit the website.

If someone would like to donate their time, there are opportunities to volunteer, virtually.

To learn more about their needs, visit the website and click on the “How to Help” page, and download the volunteer application.

Vested Interest in K9s welcomes donations in any amount, online at www.vik9s.org (preferably), or by mailing a check made out to the organization and sent to: Vested Interest in K9s, PO Box 9, Taunton, MA, 02718.

Another way to contribute is by holding a fundraiser. The events can be as small as hosting a lemonade stand to organizing a dinner dance. The funds submitted will go toward donating vests

to the K9s in need. Visit the website to complete the online “Community Fundraiser” event form.

For those who enjoy shopping, visit the online store and purchase one of their books, knit hats, tee shirts, decals, coins, calendars (the 2024 one will be available soon), and other items. Monies raised from the sale of these products also go toward the cause.

There are other ways people and/or businesses can get involved.

“The best way to protect a four-legged K9 officer is becoming a sponsor. It could save a K9’s life. For a $1,000 donation, you can sponsor a protective vest for one K9 in need. As the donor, you have the option to choose one of 7 pre-approved sentiments to be embroidered on the chest section of the K9’s vest.

“Donors interested in sponsoring a vest for a specific K9 in need, please contact us to inquire if the department you wish to earmark your sponsorship for is able to accept donated vest(s),” Marcal said.

More information can be obtained either by calling (508) 824-6978, or by email at info@vik9s.org.

Imagine what it would be like knowing that in spite of the abuse experienced by these animals prior to them receiv ing help, you can now be assured that their futures will be better, as they are now receiving what they deserve- the love that most of them have never felt in their lives. That’s not something that can be bought in a pet store. That is a true and honest miracle that can only be found at a place like the Rhode Island SPCA.

Drive Away Satisfied From Toyota of Smithfield

Toyota of Smithfield, located on George Washington Highway (Rte. 116), has a variety of new and certified, pre-owned vehicles in their showroom.

Regardless of which type of car or truck you are looking for, the dealership has the knowledge and experience to make the carpurchasing process easy.

General Manager John Durrani hopes those looking for their next vehicle should consider speaking with the sales representatives, in order to take advantage of several dealer incentives.

“Anyone trading in either their used or certified, pre-owned cars, for example, will receive an additional $1,000 over book value,” he said. “There won’t be a better time for anybody to trade in their cars. Your trade is worth more than it ever has before, and it’s worth more now than its ever going to be worth.”

For those who already possess their mode of transportation, they can visit their award-winning service department to help keep their vehicles running efficiently. Their highly-trained staff are adept at diagnosing the small problems that can often turn into

major headaches if left unaddressed.

With their inventory still lower than normal, they are eagerly accepting any used cars. There are several incentives designed to get someone out of their older car, and potentially into a more suitable newer one.

“We are still appealing to the community for your used vehicles. Simply put, we lack the inventory to adequately fulfill orders,” Durrani said.

To help facilitate the need for more certified, pre-owned vehicles onto their lot, Toyota of Smithfield also offers 115% of the book value for any used cars. It does not matter whether the customer decides to purchase a car from their lot.

“We will buy your trade, even if you don’t purchase a car from us,” Durrani added.

The dealership holds a monthly private sale. This month’s event is scheduled for Saturday, August 26, and Sunday, August 27, from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM, by appointment only. Those who attend will be expected to follow social guidelines, but also have access to their inventory. Managers will be there to answer questions and offer additional incentives.

Their Peace of Mind Purchase Process means no hassles over pricing, trade-in values, cash back and rebate incentives offered up front and the best available leasing and financing terms up front. Durrani said that this is just part of the all-around, customer-driven experience he implemented to ensure the process does not get bogged down in miscommunication.

Schedule an appointment by calling them 401-723-0962, or on their website at www.toyotaofsmithfield.com.
