Intro: Design Week 2009 is a weeklong celebration of design on the island of Ireland. The purpose of Design Week 2009 is to showcase design and the positive impact that it can have on all our lives. We have three audiences: the general public, who use design; the business community, who employ designers; and, of course, the designers themselves. The idea for Design Week 2009 is simple - a range of partnership organizations and interested parties agree to stage an event, or series of events, in early November, thereby providing a comprehensive picture of what is happening in Irish design. The week is now firmly established at the beginning of November. Events are taking place throughout the island, in Belfast, Cork, Kilkenny, Limerick, Louth, Tullamore and Waterford, as well as Dublin. We have been actively trying to grow

Y

the week and the organizing committee, comprising the design organizations IDI, ICAD, RIAI, Ambient Project, Frank Design & Communication (Belfast) and Design Tower, plus educational partners DIT, NCAD, GMIT Letterfrack, IT Carlow and CIT. Every year we have had ambitious targets for growth. This year we have launched our website (www.designweek. ie), and we welcome all comments in relation to the events in 2009, as well as getting involved in events for 2010. The design community is well catered for in Design Week 2009. Next year we hope to develop many more events for the public, as they are the ultimate consumers of our work. The week does not happen by accident. I would like to thank all of the volunteers who run Design Week, the organizations that host events, and, of course, our sponsors for Design Week 2009, Bombay Sapphire. 1/44

The launch of Design Week 2009 in association with Bombay Sapphire takes place on Monday 2 November, with a talk from the acclaimed international designer Thomas Heatherwick. Thomas founded his eponymous studio in 1994 to make unique design projects happen. Today the practice operates from a combined studio and workshop in King’s Cross, London, where a team of architects, designers and makers work on projects ranging from bridges and buildings to products and largescale works of art. This is an environment where project management and implementation takes place in parallel with modelmaking, prototyping and experimentation with ideas, materials and manufacturing processes. The studio’s work includes La Maison Unique in New York, the world flagship store for luxury French brand Longchamp, and the multiawardwinning East Beach Cafe, a seafront restaurant in Littlehampton, on the south coast of England. Current projects include a monastic building in Sussex and the British Pavilion for the Shanghai Expo in 2010.

Since its inception, the studio’s work has been recognized through a number of awards, and its work is widely published and exhibited around the world. Thomas is an Honorary Fellow of the RIBA and a Senior Fellow at the Royal College of Art. He is the recipient of honorary doctorates from four British universities: Sheffield Hallam, Brighton, Dundee and Manchester Metropolitan. He has won the Prince Philip Designers Prize, and in 2006 was the youngest practitioner to be appointed a Royal Designer for Industry. Thomas is a member of the Bombay Sapphire Foundation, which was established in 2001 to recognize, encourage and reward the very best in contemporary design. The members of the Foundation include leading international designers and some of the world’s most respected figures from the glass and design industry. At the launch event, Thomas will treat guests to an insight into his diverse and fascinating career, and speak about his work with the Bombay Sapphire Foundation and current and upcoming projects

ICAD Upstarts Exhibition Each year ICAD undertakes to foster new talent with a free training programme known as the ‘Upstarts’. The programme is designed to help aspiring designers, art directors and copywriters to work within the industry, and sends them to six different advertising agencies or design studios over the course of six weeks to complete a creative brief each week. They also work with a mentor throughout the programme. This exhibition gives the Upstarts the opportunity to show off some of the work they have undertaken over the course of the programme, and gives creative directors the opportunity to see fresh talent come into the industry.

The Irish Architecture Foundation and The Small Print present‘Pecha Kucha Night Dublin’

When: Thu 5 Nov, doors 7pm Where: The Sugar Club, Leeson Street, Dublin 2 Price: €5 www.architecturefoundation.ie www.alwaysreadthesmallprint. com

Pecha Kucha Night for Design Week is the third event presented by the Irish Architecture Foundation and The Small Print. It was originally devised by Klein Dytham Architecture, Tokyo, in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network and show their work in public. The key to Pecha Kucha Night is its patented system: each presenter is allowed 20 images – each shown for 20 seconds – giving six minutes and 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.

Three children’s workshops of mixed media/ construction using found and recycled objects, as well as bought/traditional craft materials. The aim is to allow groups of children to interpret a stimulus and respond to it in 3D form, creating a sculptural piece that could then be exhibited for the remainder of Design Week. Processes and skills that are often associated with craft and design will be demonstrated in an informal manner throughout the workshops, as construction requires. This will allow for an organic and interactive workshop for participants, as it will become very much group-led. The idea behind the workshops is that they takes place in a space where the work can become an exhibit once completed. Workhouse Studios is interested in allowing workshop participants the experience of having work on show in a gallery for an event.
