TODAY IN HISTORY

On 14th March 1879, one of the world’s greatest scientists was born in Germany. He is regarded as the father of modern physics and one of the greatest intellects in history. In 1921 he received the Nobel Prize for Services to Theoretical Physics. Einstein’s father’s business failed and the family moved to Italy. Albert Einstein attended college in Zurich. There was only one female student on the maths and physics course, and she became Einstein’s first wife. They had 2 sons but separated. Einstein married his cousin Elsa in 1919.

THE WAY WE WERE

How often did you buy a new lipstick? I had favourite colours that I used most of the time so I probably bought a new one twice a year. Sometimes I would treat myself to a different colour if one caught my fancy. I didn’t generally spend a lot on cosmetics. It was good when you bought a new lipstick because the case was shiny and new too. I liked Yardley lipsticks because I liked the smell of them. Some lipsticks felt nice when you put them on. I didn’t like lipsticks that were too dry, or at the opposite end of the scale, too creamy.

Dear Mary and Jimmy As you drive across many parts of Eastern England these days, you often see Pillboxes left in place after the 2nd World War. There were three around where we lived and us boys had great fun playing in them. The best one was in the middle of a farmer’s field so we could only use that after harvest, and before ploughing. The other two were in meadows and we had all sorts of imaginary attacks and battles around them. From them we repelled German Paratroopers and Civil War soldiers – as well as sometimes whooping Red Indians. They also made good shelters when it rained!

I wish I had someone to run errands for me! When we were children, my brother and I always seemed to be running errands for Mother and our neighbours. I didn’t mind posting letters, but I hated going to the butcher. The smell of meat was something I really didn’t like. My brother was the one who got asked to carry the heavy items. The best errand of all was when we were asked to take lemonade bottles back. Pop bottles had a penny deposit on them and we were allowed to keep half of what was due. Best wishes from Shirley

prevent an anticipated German invasion. The most common of these defences were small squat concrete forts sited at road junctions, canals and other strategic points. They were known as ‘Pill Boxes’ because they were shaped like the boxes that doctors used for pills. Over 28,000 were built but less than 6,000 still survive. Questions: Were there any Pillboxes around where you lived? Did you play around them as a child? What sorts of games did you play?
