Create a new receptive space in the old Cespedes Theatre to welcome travelers and organise their distribution around the neighbourhood. Activate the unused existing structures to offer new facilities, addressed to both tourists and the local community. Create a new public flexible space to host different activities at various moments of the day.

Improve the hospitality by offering a warm and welcoming environment, starting from renewing old bathrooms and guest rooms. Gradually improve the living quality for the tenants by renovating the spaces, the ambiances and the home appliances and technical systems, without compromising the sustainability and the ecological impact.

AB MAISON Hh 17

THE APPROACH Maison Hh has been designed in collaboration with the renowned Montreal design firm À Hauteur d’Homme. The goal was to design a compact home, pre-fabricated and transportable from the factory to the client, to respond to the traditional Canadian countryside living, with a contemporary readymade solution. THE PROJECT Designed for the new generation of countryside seekers, the small hut is produced with sandwich panels which ensure the insulation for the cold Canadian weather. The big openings let the nature inside, offering a view from the master bedroom which can be transformed on the occasion in a bathtub.

AB THE RIGHT SCALE 21

LOOKING FOR THE RIGHT SCALE Situated in a small neighborhood in the suburbs of Paris, the project is composed by 30 apartments of different sizes and typologies, disposed in two different buildings which scale accords to their surroundings. The southern building, facing a public square, is much higher than the northern one which is part of a more intimate ecosystem, the Rue Haguette. A PUBLIC PASSAGE WITH PRIVATE FACILITIES One of the main goals was to rely this street and Rue Casanova with a public pedestrian passage through the plot. Both buildings lift up from the ground to invite the pedestrians to come across, and let them discover an intimate inner court. A part of it is private and dedicated to the residents with a common garden relied to a common room for neighborhood parties; the other part is property of a school and shared with the public passage. 22

SWISS STYLE A Laundry-CafĂŠ is also available on the ground floor, for both the public and the residents. It is inspired by the Swiss habit to share the laundry in the basement of every residential building to save space and energy in the apartments.

THE APARTMENTS The two wings of the project are significantly different. In the northern wing the apartments are diagonally conceived with views on every direction, and organized around an important transversal distributional space, which aims to be the 24

heart of the building and a social meeting point. In the southern wing, the apartments are all transversal and organized around private patios. They’re conceived more as metropolitan villas with their own privacy and big living spaces.

A NEW HEART: SPORT CENTER

SCHOOL PROJECT, BACHELOR 5, 2013 ENSA PARIS BELLEVILLE LOCATION: CANAL DE L’OURQ, 20ème, PARIS, FRANCE PROGRAM: SPORT CENTER + ASSOCIATION CLUBHOUSE + ASSOCIATION SHOP + BOOK SHOP + CAFÉ PROFESSOR: GALIANO + PHAM

AB SPORT CENTER 29

A NEW HEART FOR A NEIGHBORHOOD Situated on the Canal de l’Ourcq, in the 19th arrondissement, the project is a public equipment which aims to become the new hearth of the neighborhood. It comprehends a sport center with multi sports facilities, a basket court and a gym hall for public competitions; a club house for a local association, connected to a shop; a book shop and a café. REHABILITATION OF THE OLD VIADUCT The big plot is crossed diagonally by an old

viaduct, once part of the public transportation system, which is converted to house the association’s facilities, the shops and the café. All the public spaces are integrated in the existent archs, while the meeting rooms, the storages and the

technical equipment are dug underneath it. To bring light to the underground level, and to light up the beautiful viaduct at night, a double lightening system is conceived in a glass crack along the entire viaduct.

A MONOLITHIC BUILDING The sport facilities are integrated in a monolithic glass building, floating at the level of the viaduct thanks to a huge cantilever trussed structure which surrounds the main entrance of the building reposing in a concrete basement. From the public square, a descending ramp brings the visitor to a double height hall surrounding the basket court, from where, through a double circulation system - clean/dirty - the athletes can access the wardrobe floor and then the sport courts, and the public can proceed directly to the bleachers.

VOYAGE A LUGANO EPFL BA3 • THEORIE ET CRITIQUE DU PROJET • ATELIER DURISCH + NOLLI 2012-13

10 IMAGES FOR LUGANO: PART 1 10 Images pour Lugano was a theme lasting two semesters, in which we had to design 10 different projects in 10 strategic points of the beautiful lakeside city. In the first part, we designed 5 pavilions for the Ciani Park, the park of a 19th century villa facing the lake, which is now the public park of the city. THE SECRET GARDEN One of the 5 proposed themes was the Flower Pavilion. Inspired by an Haiku poem of the 17th century and an antique Japanese drawing, Zen is a place of calm and contemplation dedicated to a Sakura, the Japanese cherry blossom tree. The visitor is invited to climb on the top of the pavilion to discover a secret garden, regulated by the rules of traditional Japanese gardening, spiritual home of the Sakura.

A SPIRITUAL SHOP On the ground floor, the pavilion houses a bonsai shop. Conceived like a chapel for a precious relic, it features no openings except for a zenital crack which allows direct sunlight to enter only in the period of the Hanami, the Japanese tradition of enjoying the flowering of cherry trees during the month of April. AB BUS HUB 47

10 IMAGES FOR LUGANO: PART 2 In the second part of the exercise 10 Images pour Lugano, we had to design 5 multifunctional buildings in 5 strategic points of the city. MORE THAN A BUS HUB Due to a high number of daily commuters who come to the city from the entire region, public transportations have a big importance in Ticino and

its green politic. Thousands of people transit every day through Lugano train station which is dislocated from the city center, therefore it needs an accessible commercial area linked to the numerous transportation lines to which it’s connected. In addition, the project houses offices and a new schooling center for the Federal Railway System.

master plan

A LIGHTHOUSE FOR LUGANO The building is an extrusion of the entire plot, excavated with an internal court to bring light and circulation to the bus hub on the ground floor. The facade is covered with mat glazed elements which serve as sun screens during the day and illuminate at night transforming the building into a veritable lighthouse for the city and its lake. SHIFTING CIRCULATIONS The commercial area is located on the first floor of the building, directly and easily accessible from the bus platforms through two public escalators. On this public floor, horizontal circulations are placed at the exterior of the building, leaving the visitors some visual connections to the city and the lake through the openings in the facade. The upper floors have dedicated lifts which connect directly the school

1:200

and the offices to the bus hub and the underground parkings. On the private floors, horizontal circulations shift to the interior of the building, leaving space for terraces and views on the facade and creating visual connections between the two programs through the court. The schooling center and the offices are separated on every floor by common terraces and a cafĂŠ to allow exchanges between the two programs.

PIA DURISCH + ALDO NOLLI GUEST PROFESSORS EPFL LAUSANNE

“I’ll tell you one thing my professor told me when I was your age: Try to do what you can’t do”

Andrea’s work gave us always a great satisfaction. He proved himself very responsible, reliable and autonomous, showing a remarkable sense of initiative and execution speed. He contributed significantly to many projects at the museum and gave us a considerable support during the different tasks within the technical team. Motivated and creative, he has been very organized and accurate, from the conception to the final execution of every project. Sensitive and reactive to the needs of the team, thanks to his commitment and his interpersonal skills, he was a very appreciated coworker by everyone. We recommend him implicitly to every employer.

Andrea studied with us for two semesters at EPFL in the period 2012/13. During this period, we found him to be an exceptional student, and certainly among the best in the studio. His projects for a flower kiosk at Parco Ciani on the Lugano Lake and his urban project for a bus station with shopping mall at Lugano train station are, in our opinion, very interesting architectural, typological and structural studies inserted in a complex urban context. Andrea is a very attentive student and very ambitious with the architectonic and structural concepts he explores in his work. He is a talented designer, intelligent and intellectually active. He is curious, rigorous and confident.

Andrea has worked under our supervision as an intern in various occasions. He fabricated for us precise architecture models, an impressive 3D rendering and a most complete architectural survey. Mr. Briccola has a pleasant disposition and a very balanced and even keel character. He is reliable, independent and efficient. He is imaginative, quick to learn, very engaging and fun to work with. He applies himself to demanding situations and responds with enthusiasm to opportunities to learn and develop. As you can see, Mr. Briccola has left a very positive impression on our studio and we hold him in our highest regards. I am quite certain that Mr. Briccola will succeed in all his future endeavours and do very well as he furthers his studies.

Andrea worked in our studio as an intern for 6 months in 2016. During this period, he completed effectively and with a high competence the tasks he was assigned to, with our entire satisfaction. Andrea seems to us a young and promising architect, and we were happy to offer him the adequate context to develop his professional skills and his understanding of the Canadian architecture, with great independence. We would like to highlight his open attitude and his availability, which made him an appreciated intern by his colleagues and his superiors.
