Mission The Andrea Bocelli Foundation was created to help people in need due to illness, poverty and social exclusion by promoting and supporting national and international projects that support the overcoming of these barriers and full self-

expression.

The Foundation works to ensure that each person and each community can express themselves to the best of its abilities beyond their limits.

Area programs Challenges The Challenges program operates within the area of scientific and technological research and social innovation, accepting major challenges in terms of both investments and results to be achieved in the willingness to allow anyone who experiences economic or social difficulties to express themselves.

Break the Barriers

The Break the Barriers Program stems from the desire to support projects contributing to breaking down barriers, be they economic or cultural, in Italy and in Developing Countries. For the Andrea Bocelli Foundation, breaking down a barrier means to be successful in the desire to offer every human being freedom and dignity to live the life they deserve.

Give people the ability to provide for themselves by creating opportunities for redemption in terms of economic and social independence by acting responsibly on real needs and activating people’s unexpressed energy.

ABF in Haiti

Under the Break the Barriers program, the Foundation has chosen to work in Haiti respecting the desire of its founder, who before setting up his organization has long championed the work of Father Rick Frechette, a priest of the Passionist order, and Director of NPH in Haiti. ABF began his work in Haiti in 2012 with the Virginia project, which involved the expansion of the Neonatology Department of the St. Damien Pediatric Hospital in Port au Prince.

The project was completed in 2013, and the Foundation decided to accomplish a mission to better understand the needs of the place in which it was called to work and to develop new projects in partnership.

In the same year ABF started the “Wheat Project,” incorporating 1,100 children and their families into the street school program of the Fondation Saint Luc. In addition to the educational programs, this partner organization was able to guarantee at least one hot meal per day, along with nutritional guidance for entire families.

Since early 2014, in spite of the growing number of children enrolled, ABF has converted 3 street schools into permanent

and functional structures. While serving as suitable classrooms, these structures are taking on a second life as secure community centers. In 2015 ABF started new projects for the 3 communities of Croix-the-Bouquets, Kenscoff and Abricot development through simple actions: solar lamps distribution, agriculture training and activities, water wells and towers. Other projects include the ABF water truck, ensuring the regular delivery of potable water in the slums of Citè Soleil. In 2016 the Foundation will work to give more educational opportunities, and eventual employment, in 2 more communities, Dame Marie and Jecmel, where the 2 street schools of Manataine Dame Marie and St. Raphael are situated. ABF will work to convert also these basic structures in functional and safe buildings able to host 400 students each. In short, ABF will bring forward the community empowerment program that gives hope for a dignified life. Since January 2015 ABF has been supporting also the HIV Program of the St. Damien Hospital.

ABF’s partner in Haiti: St. Luc Foundation Mission Providing education, medical care and dignified humanitarian outreach to the least served populations of Haiti.

Vision Helping Haitian leaders as they create lasting solutions for a stronger and more independent Haiti.

The St. Luc Foundation is a Haitian, nonprofit, Catholic foundation dedicated to education, healthcare, community development, agricultural investment and emergency relief programs, whose activities impact up to 90.000 people a year. Founded by Father Rick Frechette CP, an American priest and physician, and developed and expanded under the leadership of Jean Nebez Augustin, the foundation is the fruit of more than 26 years of experience of working in Haiti.

Special emphasis is placed on working with young Haitians, many of them raised in the orphanages of Nos Petits Freres et Soeurs, sharing with them a vision of the development of Haiti based on hard work, integrity, Christian values, and the insights elicited from the young Haitians themselves. The programs of the Saint Luc Foundation employ over 1,000 people

ABF’s goal is to provide long term support to the Haitian leadership and to raise worldwide attention on the great needs of Haiti. Their common aim is to empower people and communities, giving them the opportunity to express their full potential.

Introduction Music is the light in our soul that makes all our senses feel in harmony with nature and makes us alive every single moment we remember our existence in this world. Gratefully, music wakes up our system and lets us develop at best brilliant thoughts and skills.

This is the reason why ABF is introducing music in the 30 schools of Foundation St. Luc, to let the students grow in harmony and reach opportunities to perform themselves, and approach the area of art and culture. Furthermore, all the students come from poor economic and social background and through music they can find a way to consolidate logics of discipline, cooperation, and a breath from the grip of poverty. Music becomes an additional means for social and intellectual development, not only personal, but for all the community. Through music and the beauty that music expresses, there is the willingness of focusing again the international interest on the Haitian condition, by celebrating the strength of its colors and its people.

The “Voices of Haiti” project This is one of our most important programs. It involves and integrates all the 30 schools in the process of developing talents and driving them through the integration system.

Final aim is to reinforce the students’ real abilities, to stimulate their creativity and to offer them more choices to succeed in life.

“Voice of Haiti” is one and permanent Haitian choir, composed by 60 students.

The performances of the choir are held in important moments of celebration, from Easter to the end of the school both in Haiti and internationally. The repertoire is a mixture between folk Haitian and international music.

Requirements for admission to the choir: • The child should be in one of our schools.

• Aged between 9 and 15.

• Be able to participate in every rehearsal.

• Be at least a talented child in the area of music.

• Be a punctual and well disciplined child.

Objectives 7

It is a long-term program, whose principal objectives are the following: • Develop the art of talents in our schools.

• Create a professional choir with an international standard.

• Offer children the possibility to study music in deep as an opportunity for their future.

• Give opportunities to children to perform with famous artists in the world.

• Promote national and international Art and Culture through the voices of children.

• Encourage children to be a very professional musicians and to take music as a part of the development of their education and abilities.

• Show them the importance of music literacy

Discipline and work plan Every Saturday, from January 23rd 2016, two buses will collect all the 60 students from 7.00am and will bring them to the Auditorium. Two music trainers and a staff of 4 supervisors will welcome them with a little breakfast moment.

The lessons are structured as follows: 9.00 am Voice warming and vocalization Music Therapy Rehearsals Lunch Game time /relax Rehearsals

1.30 pm End of Session

At the end of each rehearsal, the two buses will drive the students home.

Beneficiaries This program will have a direct team of workers to teach, do rehearsals and to take care for the disciplinary actions.

Direct beneficiaries • Team worker: 2 music trainers, 1 musician, 4 supervisors.

• Standard number of students: 60 children 9

Indirect beneficiaries • Volunteer team in case of big events: 10 to 15 persons.

• The parents of the children.

• 12.000 students from all the St Luc schools.

Delice Wenson Musician trainer

Delice Wenson, is a young musician, born in Port-au-prince, Haiti on August 23rd, 1992. He started singing in a church GOSPEL CHOIR, and after the earthquake he went to a special music program at the Holy Trinity Music School from the OEA. He started to study music at 16. He has experiences in Musical training at the Holy Trinity Music School (EMST) and vocal training with the soprano Nicole ST VICTOR. Most of his experiences are with LES PETITS CHANTEURS of Holy Trinity singing everywhere in the country. He normally sings as TENOR and he is learning Piano and Cello at the University of ENARTS the National school of Arts.

He went to USA in September 2012 for a Music Tour and Show with Les Petits Chanteurs of Holy Trinity also sang at Parc Historique de la Canne Ă Sucre with a French Conductor; He performed for Digicel Entrepreneur at Caribe Convention Center; he also performed in the national public place for the Memory and Remembrance of January 12th 2010 earthquake. He performed for the great Christian Convention and participated in the Show of HOMAGE to RAOUL GUILLAUME a very famous Haitian composer. In September 2015 he participated in the workshop for Conductors with Joan Pages VALLS with the cultural association HaitianDutch. In March 2013 he represented the Choirmaster at Baptiste church of the Cites. In July 2013 he got Solfege training with Welmyr Jean PIERRE at KAY MIZIK LA and right after he decided to get in the Academic musical training at the national school of Art (ENARTS), in September 2013, to become professional. He sang IN DUO in one RECITAL at Holy Trinity in Haiti with mezzo-soprano MONICA MINARELLI an Italian artist. And in June 2015 he became the Recorder Teacher at petit monde de Dora and around September 2015 he became the Maestro of the singing teachers at the school of music Vision Nouvelle.

For him Music is the greatest power ever that can change the world, it is the golden key that can open all doors in the world, it is a part of his life. His goal is to become one of the greatest Musicians ever and to help young people in his country in music. His dream is to learn as much as possible about the world of music.

Francois Johanne Musician trainer

Francois Johanne, is a young musician, born in Port-au-Prince on August 14th, 1989. She attended the University of ENARTS the National school of Arts for superior studies for 4 years. She started music at very young age singing in the children choir of the church. Then she kept singing there and at 13 years old she started with Solfege and with Clarinet as first instruments.

She has had working experiences with children in disadvantaged areas in psychosocial domain for the Organization Mercy Corps. She assured the interim in the absence of the Choirmaster of ENARTS (Emile DESAMOURS) on Christmas festival organized at Champs-de-Mars by Florence JEAN-LOUIS DUPUY, under the theme of Living Nativity.

She worked like trainer with children, adolescents and adults in songs and she worked with children in piano. In July 2013 she gave a workshop in songs in Aquin in south area of Haiti.

She plays two instruments: Piano and Clarinet. She performed in different types of events here in the country (Haiti). In January 2015 she performed with the Swiss Band: CO-STREIFF in Festival Jazz In Petion-ville. In August 2015 she gave a very good performance also with the choir of her school ENARTS at CARIFESTA in Port-au-Prince at Kiosque Occide Jeanty (a public place) to represent HAITI with the participation of 22 countries. In June 2012 she performed with the Orchestra of ENARTS in the Festival of Music singing and playing the clarinet with the choir. In May 2012 she performed with her choir for the Ex-president of Haiti Mr. Michel Joseph Martelly in Mupanah, the national museum. She also participated in the workshop of OSCAR WILLIAMS an international Artist and Conductor from USA in her school and sang together on his group.

Music means a lot for her, it is her life. Her goal is to become a great Pianist in the world. Her big dream is to become an International Singer and a professional Conductor or Choirmaster.

Malcolm J. Merriweather Art director

Malcolm J. Merriweather enjoys a professional career as a baritone, conductor and educator.

He is the Choral Associate at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and Director of Choirs at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. For the 2015-2016 season, he begins his tenure as Artistic Director of the West Village Chorale and joins the faculty at Union Theological Seminary as a Guest Artist-in-Residence. Merriweather began his professional musical training as a chorister in the Choir of Men and Boys at St. Paul’s Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys, in Buffalo, New York. He attended Syracuse University where he earned a Bachelor of Music in music education, summa cum laude.

Merriweather earned a Master of Music degree in choral conducting at the Eastman School of Music. He received a second Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the studio of Rita Shane, dramatic coloratura soprano at the Eastman School of Music.

He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from the studio of Kent Tritle at Manhattan School of Music. He has benefited from the close mentorship of Dr. Elisa Macedo Dekaney, Dr. Barbara Tagg, Dr. Christopher Shepard, and John Daly Goodwin.

His doctoral dissertation, “Now I walk in Beauty, Gregg Smith: A Biography and Complete Works Catalog,” constitutes the first complete works list for the composer and conductor.

The baritone has had solo engagements with the Dessoff Choirs, New York Choral Society, Oratorio Society of New York, Bach Vespers Choir and Orchestra, Musica Sacra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He has been a fellowship recipient with the festivals at Norfolk, CT and the Tanglewood Music Center. An interpreter of solo contemporary vocal music, Merriweather has premiered works by Eve Beglarian, John Liberatore, Ju Ri Seo, Douglas Fisk, and James Adler. He is the New York ACDA Repertoire and Standards Chair for Music and Worship and has conducted festival choirs throughout the Eastern United States.

Eugene Kohn Music supervisor

Eugene Kohn was immersed in opera from a very young age, accompanying the vocal classes of such “golden age” stars as Giovanni Martinelli and Maria Jeritza. He became the conducting “protégée” of the Metropolitan Opera’s Fausto Cleva, and in the 1970’s began performing in public as recital accompanist to some of opera’s greatest voices: Renata Tebaldi, Giuseppe DiStefano, Franco Corelli, Maria Callas, and the young Luciano Pavarotti. Kohn had the opportunity to study the central European symphonic repertoire with Erich Leinsdorf, and was assistant in symphonic, choral, and operatic repertoire to Thomas Schippers. Several years of conducting regional symphony orchestras and opera companies led to his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1980, conducting “La Gioconda”.

His reengagement at the MET for several different productions led to debuts in major international theatres. While based in Europe through the 1980’s and 1990’s Kohn conducted at the opera houses of Vienna, Hamburg, Berlin (both), Barcelona, Rome, Naples, Paris, Buenos Aires, etc.

He held the position of Principal Guest Conductor at the Bonn Opera, where he broadened his German repertoire with productions of “Fliegende Hollaender”, “Rosenkavalier”, “Zauberfloete”, “Fidelio” etc.

He also served for eight years as Music Director of the Puerto Rico Symphony, increasing their repertoire with cycles of Mahler, Stravinsky, and Bruckner. For the last ten years Kohn has divided his time equally between symphony and opera. He is also active as Music Director for concerts worldwide with Plácido Domingo, a collaboration of several decades well documented on DVD and recordings.

He tours as Music Director for tenor Andrea Bocelli, and has conducted as well for Brynn Terfel, Anna Netrebko, Angela Georhgiu. Next season he debuts with the Leipzig Gewandhaus in a Verdi Gala featuring Plácido Domingo.

Kohn has precorded for EMI, Sony, and DECCA, and can also be seen as screen actor in Zeffirelli’s film “Callas Forever” (with Jerermy Irons and Fanny Ardant) where he recreates his real life role from years earlier as Ms. Callas’ accompanist.
