Starting from Scratch A new year, a new collection SKIRTS TO SHIRTS

Following on the coattails of his successful men’s T-shirt capsule collection at Dover Street Market in London, Christopher Kane has officially launched his first-ever menswear range. The line revolves around explosive, celestial prints, much like his resort 2011 womenswear collection. But instead of the usual feminine silhouettes, the London-based Scottish designer takes on loosely fitted shirts, cardigans and knits, and pairs them with sporty leather shorts and jackets.

TRUE COLOURS PROJECT RUNWAY

Known as the shoemaker to the stars, Salvatore Ferragamo has always been one step ahead in Hollywood, having invented the wedge and cage heels, and steel-reinforced stilettos. Now the brand is releasing the reins and is allowing its customers to design and customise their own shoes within six weeks in its latest venture – The Red Carpet Project. Launching in March, a couple months after the release of Angelina Jolie’s latest film The Tourist, in which her own Ferragamo shoes (dubbed LET) are customised, the project will comprise six shoe styles, 23 colours and a monogram option..

With his trademark bold colours, unusual prints and structured shapes, Jonathan Saunders was a natural fit for Escada Sport, so it’s no wonder that the brand has asked him to do a capsule for its resort 2012 collection. The 33-year-old British designer will capture a union between “modern femininity, relaxed chic and striking colour,” while drawing upon a “buy now – wear now” concept. Saunders’ collection, which will comprise 20 pieces as well as leather goods, will be available in November 2011 at all Escada and Escada Sport stores.

WHEN IN ROME

When the Italian government wasn’t able to stretch its budget to provide funding for the renovation of Rome’s crown jewel and the largest architectural masterpiece left from the Roman Empire, Diego Della Valle, president of Tod’s Group, came to the rescue. The company that umbrellas brands including Tod’s, Hogan, Fay and Roger Vivier will finance the entire restoration of the Colosseum in support of Italy’s history and heritage. “We believe that because the Tod’s Group is a strong global representative of Made in Italy, it’s both an honour and our duty to contribute to the support of our country’s image and credibility, as well as its cultural heritage,” says Della Valle. That’s certainly one way to spend €25 million. january 2011 – Prestige – 51
