More is more Where shall we go on holiday this summer, we wondered as we shivered through last winter. To the fun-loving French Riviera, sultry Casablanca, or at long last, to the glittering paradise of Las Vegas? We decided to travel to all three, and our travels consequently inspired us on all fronts to create as diverse a collection as possible. That’s why there’ll be a lot to choose from and experience at &k this summer. We travel from the stylish coast through the mysterious desert to the vibrant casino, where nothing is as it seems. Will it be the iconic stripes on the beaches in Nice, where bathers gaze out to sea from beneath blue and white parasols? We have lovely vases and summer cushions featuring this typical beach and stripes design. Or would you prefer to dream your day away with the subtle, earthy tones of the North African desert, admire your reflection in mirrors bordered with braided rattan, and fill your hand-painted vases from Casablanca’s kasbah with summer bouquets? As a sharp contrast to nature’s beautiful imperfection, we also have plastic fantastic products direct

from the motels in Las Vegas: glitter-kitties, glamour crocodiles, colourful summer snow globes, and faux monstera plants in girly pink and violet, for a playful interior. You can steal the show with our ridiculously glamorous make-up cases. The great thing is that these richly contrasting collections can also be combined effectively. The leaf-shaped rugs that we’ve designed provide a warm foundation for this. Our big news is our unique partnership with the famous Dutch cookbook writer and television chef, Yvette van Boven. We’ve collaborated with her to produce cheerful textiles, extraordinary tableware, and a bamboo series. The tableware is for indoor use at the dining table, and the bamboo for a picnic in the great outdoors. Finally, we’ve developed a genuine salt and pepper set for the Rijksmuseum, inspired by two spectacular portraits painted by Rembrandt in 1634. With Marten and his wife Oopjen on your table, you’ll be able to season your meal in style every day. LOT1038 has been bringing modern design to the Caribbean island of Curaçao since 2006. They initially did so for various business projects on the island, but in 2008, LOT1038 opened its doors as a showroom annex studio for private customers. Art, creativity and design for both indoors and outdoors come together, blending the typical Caribbean atmosphere with a luxury lifestyle. LOT1038 sells furniture, art, rugs, tiles, textiles and accessories from leading design companies from around the world. Examples include Designers guild, Artemide, Fatboy, Moooi, Kartell and Vitra. Ruud Zegwaart’s favourite &K item is – not entirely surprisingly – the palm tree cushion. “The cushion perfectly suits our style, atmosphere and of course, the Caribbean location.”

One source of inspiration for LOT1038 is the international interior and design fairs. “We never skip a year of the Salone del Mobile in Milan, because it’s always an absolute feast of inspiration and creativity.” For anyone planning to visit beautiful Curaçao, Ruud suggests the Papagayo Hotel. You can eat delicious meals at Restaurant Zest, chill out at Beach Club Madero, drop in to Café/ Bar Miles for a drink, and enjoy a convivial stroll through the Pietermaai neighbourhood. “And if you feel like shopping, do come by LOT1038. “If you’re looking for a present, the best are the Tom Dixon gift sets with glassware, or the Handduo Gift Set.”

Rockett St George is a home interiors emporium, founded by Jane Rockett and Lucy St George. For people addicted to and obsessed by design, Rockett St George is a true shopping Eldorado. “Our purpose is to break free from chain store offerings by sourcing unique, authentic and quirky pieces bursting with individuality to help our customers create the home of their dreams.” Previously it was only an online shop, but the RSG pop-up has now returned to the fourth floor of the famous London department store, Liberty London. “We’ve transformed our concession space at the esteemed Liberty London into a Rockett St George emporium of our newest and most extraordinary pieces – the perfect pairing for Liberty London!” Rockett St George offers an enormous range of items. Where do you find your inspiration? “We take inspiration from everywhere. Travel, hotels and restaurants, design shows, catwalk trends, Instagram, history… the list could go on!” &K is very pleased to be included among their assortment, and naturally, we’re wondering which is their favourite item. “We love the &k’s gold monkey statue. It’s eclectic and quirky and most importantly adds humour and wit to your interiors.” And what about the best gift? “That’s always something that makes the recipient smile. Whether it’s something quirky like &k’s crocodile candle holder or a gold leopard coinbank, or something beautiful and decorative like the water lily leaf table, the key is to give someone something special.” If we visit you, where else should we go? “Brighton is our nearest city and there is so much to see and do. Juttu is a Belgian lifestyle ‘retail chain’ with branches in Brussels, Antwerp, Roeselaere, Bruges and Gent. Each and every one is a special store in a beautiful building, with a complete range varying from fashion and fun gadgets to skincare products and cheerful food. Or as Charlotte Vermeulen of Juttu Gent puts it: “The meaning of the word Juttu is actually what we want to give our customers every day – a good feeling and an interesting story. For us at Juttu, it’s all about the total experience. The relaxed atmosphere, the customer-oriented salespeople, the brands with a story, and cosy seating areas everywhere: in short, slow shopping at its best.” Although summer’s on its way, Charlotte Vermeulen still thinks Christmas is the

best time of the year. “&K has the nicest decorations ever! My absolute favourites are the space ornaments. Mádara is another great brand that I enjoy selling. These organic skincare products are just as lovely to give as to receive.” As an alternative to her busy life, Vermeulen spends a pleasant day with her friends from time to time and always feels completely recharged when she returns. “There are always fun and interesting conversation topics, preferably accompanied by a delicious breakfast or a good glass of wine. Cooking, presenting, illustrating, blogging, writing: it seems there’s nothing that all-rounder Yvette van Boven can’t turn her hand to. Whatever she comes up with is bound to be a success. Now she’s added a new string to her bow: textile and tableware design, together with &k, Yvette van Boven has designed the “Yvette van Boven vegetable” series. 1

How did the partnership with &k come about? I’d already been toying with the idea of making prints and fabric designs for aprons and napkins for some time, but then I thought, why not ceramics too? When I came into contact with &k, we clicked immediately, and decided to develop a range of products together. It was fantastic to do this project with them. They have a lot of experience in designing items. It sounds really trite, but it truly was a dream come true to be able to do this. I’d planned to do nothing for a year, but then all of a sudden there was another book,

a TV series, tableware and textiles. Whenever something like this comes my way, I always think: you should take advantage of such great opportunities! What’s tableware to you? I’m an avid collector of tableware and individual porcelain pieces. I’ve loved them since I was a child. We often received plates with letters and animals on them. A couple of years ago, I started lessons in sculpting with clay, just to see if I could do it. I’m not afraid to start something I’ve never tried before. I just get started, and then all of a sudden I’m in the middle of it and it’s working too! It’s a

bit like Pippi Longstocking’s fearless attitude: I’ve never tried that before, so I think I should definitely be able to do that. Clay sculpting is a little like kneading dough, but a lot harder going. But both activities are so relaxing. Once you’re doing it, that’s the only thing you can do. You’re up to your elbows in clay or dough. I have the same thing with cooking. You can’t just quickly go and do something on the computer, or send a message. No, you’re very focused on doing this one thing. Wonderful. So how did it turn out? I designed two lines. One with watercolours and ink for porcelain tableware that includes

plates, mugs, bowls and a water jug. I really pushed for that last item, because I’m mad about water jugs. I have a whole collection of them myself. The second line is a very summery bamboo and textiles series. It’s a graphic series with images of vegetables. In terms of style, it’s a mix of modern with plates, mugs, a tray, a tea towel, a pot holder, an oven mitt, an apron and a little apron for kids. For me, an apron is an item of work clothing; I wear an apron daily, and wipe my hands on it all the time while I’m cooking. It protects your clothing from butter and oil spatters, and you can put all kinds of things in the large

front pocket. They’re really handy; I have forty myself, some for daily use and some special ones for television or photography. I really wanted the aprons for kids, although that was a point that had to be discussed. But children cook from my books, and often come up to me at signing sessions. I love it when they’re interested in cooking at such a young age. So an apron for children was almost a must, as far as I was concerned. These ones are absolutely not fussy.

How important is tableware as part of the meal? Very important! A beautifully set table with nice tableware and cloth napkins is welcoming and has an appetising effect.

I set the table every day. You have to make an occasion of it. I prefer to eat from porcelain or ceramics that are light in colour. I don’t think bright green, orange, pink and purple are an attractive background for food. Food has its own natural colour, and those bright colours are distracting. As soon as the weather turns nice, I’m going to head into the park with a picnic bag. Throw your unbreakable bamboo plates into a bag, take a picnic blanket along, fill containers with food, add a bottle of wine and your urban picnic is ready! Furthermore, the evening sun often shines on the nicest spots. In short: simple and cheerful ingredients for a great evening. This summer, I’m going to go ahead and use my own picnic dishes.

The year of Rembrandt In 2019, to mark the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt’s death, the Rijksmuseum will be presenting an overview of all of Rembrandt’s paintings, prints and drawings from its own collection for the first time in history. The “all the Rembrandts” exhibition will bring together no fewer than 22 paintings, 60 drawings and over more than 300 prints. It gives an unparalleled image of Rembrandt as an artist, person, story-teller and it shows just how innovative he was. His penetrating self-portraits, intimate drawings, his striking depictions of emotions and everyday scenes, prove that Rembrandt is still one of history’s greatest artists.

Following the recent acquisition of the spectacular wedding portraits of Marten & Oopjen, which date back to 1634, the Rijksmuseum now manages the largest collection of Rembrandt paintings in the world. Marten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit, together for almost 400 years already, are posthumously one of the most famous and widely discussed couples in the world. Especially for the Rembrandt anniversary year, &k has designed a Marten and Oopjen salt and pepper set for the Rijksmuseum.

The paintings hang alternately in Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum and in the Louvre in Paris, but the &k salt and pepper set stays on the kitchen table. The Rijksmuseum will be honouring Rembrandt in 2019 with exhibitions, lectures, musical performances, drawing lessons, and Rembrandt walking, cycling and even tour boat routes through Amsterdam. &k has been working for years with the Rijksmuseum on the translation of museum works into stylish accessories.
