Hello!

I AM LOOKING FOR AN INTERNSHIP FROM JANUARY 2017 TO AUGUST 2017. Currently I am at Electrolux as a product design intern for 6 months, in between my Master studies in Advanced Product Design at Umeå Institute of Design. I am now looking for a second internship from January to August next year. My wish is to be a part of a multi-disciplinary team to work on exciting and challenging projects. Through my internship I hope to learn more of how I can use my education in industrial design as a platform for branching out in to other disciplines within design. I realize that the design profession is changing. Some roles are merging and new ones are surfacing, a change which I find very exciting. With a curious mind I am eager to learn more and find my way in the evolving world of design. With me as an intern you can expect a designer with passion that thrives when working in teams and pooling creativity. Topics close to my heart are exploring how industrial design can approach social issues. I want to look at norm-critisism and gender perspectives in design, as well as new technologies and their impact on our society. I have a background as a graphic designer and am native to the countryside of northern Sweden. However, it is time for me to again leave the north and seek inspiration elsewhere and I hope to find that opportunity with your company. Kind Regards

THIS IS WHERE I’M FROM Umeå, Sweden

GIVING YOUR PLANTS A VOICE Designers: Anders Sandstrรถm, Ben Lee, Siddharth Hirwani, Melissa Helmund Vega

PONTUS A group project dealing with sound and light design Rhinoceros | KeyShot | Adobe Premiere | Adobe After Effects 3 weeks | Group work

23

How can we help people care for their plants? MAKING YOUR PLANTS APPEAR MORE ALIVE AND RESPONSIVE WITH SOUND AND LIGHT. Our goal with Project Pontus was to help people who can not seem to keep their plants alive. Our approach to this was to use sound and light to communicate with the user when the plant needs water or just want some attention.

24

CREATING A DESIGN GUIDELINE Designers: Anders Sandstrรถm, Jenny Holmsten

BROKK Design Guideline Creating a personality and an emotional value connected to the product Rhinoceros | KeyShot | InDesign | Illustrator | Photoshop 2 Weeks | Group work

29

Brief THE ASSIGNMENT WAS TO CREATE A DESIGN MANUAL FOR THE BRAND BROKK AND DESIGN GUIDELINES FOR THEIR PRODUCTS.

Brokk is the world´s leading manufacturer of remote controlled demolition machines. Since 1976 the company has developed demolition and maintenance solutions for as well as a variety of demolition solutions for special assignments and projects world wide.

30

Core values FIRST OF ALL WE WANTED THE COMPANY TO EXPRESS THEIR NORDIC HERITAGE MORE CLEARLY. WE CHOSE THREE WORDS THAT WOULD BE THE COMPANIES NEW CORE VALUES. POWERFUL yet agile RELIABLE in every situation EFFICIENT through experience

31

The Hero TO LINK THE CORE VALUES WITH A PERSONALITY, WE CREATED A HERO.

The Hammer THE HERO HOLDS IN HIS HANDS ANOTHER SYMBOL, THE HAMMER. THIS IS THE VERY THING THAT CONNECTS THE EMOTIONAL IMAGE OF THE HERO TO THE ACTUAL PHYSICAL PRODUCTS.

32

The Brokk Trace

The Brokk Body

The Brokk Eyes

THE HAMMER SYMBOL RETURNS IN THE CATERPILLAR TRACKS OF THE MACHINES.

THE SIGNATURE ELEMENT OF THE MACHINES ARE LOOSELY BASED ON THE HAMMER SYMBOL AS WELL.

THE HEADLIGHTS OF THE MACHINES ARE ALSO BASED ON THE HAMMER SYMBOL.

33

Colour & Trim WE WANTED THE COLOUR SCHEME OF THE BROKK TO SIGNAL THAT IT BELONGS IN THE ENVIRONMENT THAT IT OPERATES, BUT STILL SET IT APART FROM COMPETITORS AND OTHER COMPANIES.

HELPING PARAMEDICS MEASURE RESPIRATORY RATES RESPIRATORY RADAR The Paramedics Project | Term project 2015 Rhinoceros | KeyShot | Photoshop | Illustrator | InDesign | Model building | 3D Printing 10 weeks

35

How can paramedics measure respiratory rate accurately and continuously? Measuring patients respiratory rates is an important part of the paramedics ability to assess a persons health and the priority of their cases. Despite the fact that medical researchers have realized that respiratory rates are more important than previously believed, there is no pre hospital product solution to help them make an accurate assessment.

THE ONLY METHOD AVALIABLE TODAY IS TO COUNT THE NUMBER OF TIMES THE PATIENTS CHEST RISES DURING 15 SECONDS. THEN YOU MULTIPLY THAT BY 4 TO GET A ROUGH ESTIMATE.

15 sec x 4 ≈ RR/min

36

Research

“A persons ventilation rate can tell us a lot about their health and well being. But we have no tool to measure it with” - The paramedics of Umeå Ambulance station

JOINING THE PARAMEDICS DURING A REGULAR WORKING DAY

1. OFTEN THERE ARE NO 15 SECONDS TO JUST OBSERVE 2. THEY LIKE TO FOCUS ON THE PATIENT NOT THE EQUIPMENT 3. EQUIPMENT NEED TO BE ADAPTABLE AND INTUITIVE 4. NOT AFFRAID OF NEW TECHNOLOGY 5. THEY ARE CREATIVE AND CREATE THEIR OWN SOLUTIONS

41

Final concept THE MAIN UNIT The main unit is a small device that collects, interprets and displays the results from the radar patch. It houses a micro LED-projector that can project these readings on virtually any surface. This makes it possible for them to keep an eye on the respiration rate while their hands are free to assist the patient.

MODULAR ATTACHMENT POINT

RADAR PATCH The radar patch houses the technology that scans the torso of the patient and is programmed to focus in on the movements of the lungs and the heart to be able to transmit both the patients respiratory rate and heart rate.

WRISTBAND

ON/OFF

The wristband has an attachment point for the main unit in case the paramedics wish to keep it on their wrist which allows the readings to be displayed on their hands while they care for the patients.

Scenario

2

The paramedic arrives at the scene and applies the radar patch on the patients chest.

He then starts the projector on his wrist by pushing the orange button.

At this point the main unit start to project the readings on to the paramedics hand. This leaves his hands free to care for the patient.

Should the patient require CPR the unit will alert the paramedic and display a CPR aid on his hand. It will display the pressure and rhythm required to stabilize the patient.

RE-EVALUATING THE HEADSTONE

REPOS Competition entry in design contest conducted by The Swedish Church Rhinoceros | KeyShot | Photoshop 2 weeks

45

My grandmother SHE WAS OF THE OLD WAYS WHERE TENDING THE GRAVES OF OUR DEARLY DEPARTED WAS AN IMPORTANT FAMILY DUTY. THE FLOWER BED WOULD BE KEPT FREE OF WEEDS AND FRESH FLOWERS WOULD BE PLANTED ACCORDING TO SEASON. I always enjoyed visiting grandfathers grave with her. As the years past on it became more and more difficult for her to stay as long as she wanted, simply because there was no place for her to sit and rest. Now as I visit hers, I also wish there was a place for me to stay a while and just think of and remember her. She was the strongest person I have ever met and she died of old age at an impressive ninety seven years. She will always be missed.

Repos THE FINAL DESIGN IS A TOMBSTONE THAT MARKS THE BURIAL SITE FOR A DEARLY DEPARTED, BUT ALSO CREATES A SPACE AND A PLACE TO SIT AND REFLECT, FOR THOSE WHO VISIT THE CEMETERY. The name and dates of the departed one is written on the front section, which is also the largest part of the tombstone. This is to leave no doubt that this is first and foremost a marker for the grave of a deceased, and not just a bench. In the front there is also a hollowed out space to create a flowerbed. Incorporating the flowerbed in the front section both gives enough support for the bench to stand, creates a flow from the ground up to the headstone to give it the most weight visually and making it the dominant feature. It also makes it easier for the personnel working at the cemetery to tend to the grass around it without damaging the flowers planted there. The tombstone stands firmly on the ground so it can not tip over and hurt anyone standing close to it. It can be disassembled when its transported to the cemetery and assembled on site, to make it easier for the personnel who will put it in place.

ASTEROID MINING VEHICLE

THE PROCURER X02 A spacecraft meant to tow asteroids closer to earth for mining Rhinoceros | Photoshop 50 hours

51

Brief All of Atlas Copco’s interns is given fifty hours to complete a project of their own choosing. It is mostly supposed to be a sketching and rendering exercise that will lead to an eye catching poster. The whole idea is to think very freely and highly conceptual. No research is required and there are no limitations on the final design. I asked myself what could happen if the mining industry started looking to the stars for future mining operations, more precisely, asteroids. What would Atlas Copco look like in space? This is my fifty hour project.

52

WHAT DOES IT DO? The Procurer leaves earth’s atmosphere like a space plane, thanks to new inventions by Dr. Peter Plichta in stabilising silicate oil to use as combustion fuel. Silicon oil does not burn only with oxygen, like fossil fuels, but also with nitrogen. This makes it far more effective and allows the Procurer X02 enough power to leave the atmosphere. Since silicon oil leaves no toxic residues during combustion, it does not even pollute the atmosphere during this critical stage.

When arriving to the asteroid the Procurer transforms. It unfolds its wings to form solar panels and extends two bolters in the front. With these it attaches itself to the asteroid. It then starts the main drill rig that extends through the hull. This one drills through the entire asteroid and unfolds the drill bit on the other side like an anchor. Now it is firmly attached to the asteroid and can tow it into a new orbit closer to earth

HOW DOES IT WORK? When arriving to an asteroid the Procurer X02 transforms, much like a butterfly coming out of its chrysalis and unfolding its wings for the first time. This is a simplified illustration of the Procurer to showcase how it works and which parts are involved in this transformation. A drill rig extends through the main hull

PROCURER X02

Wings unfold to become solar panels

Autonomous asteroid collector & mining platform The advanced PROCURER X02 was developed for the challenges of asteroid mining. Its mission: to autonomously launch from the atmosphere of our home world to venture out in space. There it will attach itself to asteroids and tow them back to earth orbit. It serves as a spacecraft, a tugboat and a platform for further mining operations.

Bolters extend from the front panels
