Campus News AU goes global with exciting new study abroad program.

record class, record rankings greet AU’s centennial year

Eclipsing the previous year’s record number of freshmen by about 50, the new freshman class is also one of the best academically to ever arrive in Anderson. It contains students from more states; and while it’s hard to quantify enthusiasm, it almost certainly breaks the record in that regard. In addition, graduate school enrollment rose by a stunning 35% and enrollment in the ACCEL evening program climbed 19%.

Two shiny new residence halls were finished and ready for occupants. A hip and exciting new restaurant was ready, too. Brightly colored banners heralding the beginning of Anderson University’s centennial year adorned light poles all over campus. And then, on August 14th, they came. A record number of new students, 610 in all and 510 of them freshmen, hit campus like a happy army, while an equally large army of students, parents, faculty and staff volunteers greeted them and moved them into their new homes.

Before classes even began on August 18th, AU received news that confirmed the feeling that brought such a record class. Rankings released by U.S. News & World Report placed Anderson University higher in the top tier of Southern universities than it has ever been (21st, up four spots from the previous record high). The magazine also named Anderson as one of its 68 “Up and Coming” universities in America others should be watching and the #1 “Up and Coming” college in the South.

Early estimates about enrollment seemed optimistic at around the 2,400 mark (compared with 2,280 in 2009), but remarkably, once the official enrollment of the University was submitted in late September, the number was 2,512, or 232 students more than last year.

That’s the way to begin a centennial year! We hope you enjoy reading about some of the other events of the past few months and the people who make Anderson University the institution that it is.

a parent’s perspective Reg Griffin, an executive with Comcast in Atlanta, was one of those parents who entrusted his daughter to Anderson on August 14th. He wrote about his experience on his blog “Griffin’s Graffiti” (griffinsgraffiti.blogspot.com). We are pleased he has allowed us to share his thoughts here.

Lessons from a House Finch Couple years ago, our family noticed this banging on the front door of our house. It wasn’t constant, just occasionally. But when it happened, it got your attention. Our front door is mostly made of glass, and the noise was enough to make you get up from a perfectly comfortable chair in front of a perfectly fine flat screen TV to see what was going on. Turns out it was nothing short of remarkable. Some tiny house finches were building a nest inside a small basket of artificial flowers my wife had placed on the door as decoration. And why not? It was up high from the threat of neighborhood cats and even under shelter in case of bad weather. And you know when it comes to house finches and nests, it’s all about location, location, location. Soon enough, eggs appeared and the watch was on. My wife stretched tape across the back of the door so no one would go out the door. More than one delivery person was redirected to the garage door, so the birds and their eggs were undisturbed. And then it happened. One, two and three tiny baby birds hatched right before our eyes. And then, one Friday night, another commotion at the door. The chirping was louder than normal. So, ma in her kerchief and I in my cap got up to see what was going on. The parents were strategically stationed in a crepe myrtle, only a short distance in front of the nest, calling to the babies. It was time for them to fly. The first one up was brave and bold. He was ready, but then again, not so fast. He would move to the nest, beckoned by his parents’ chirps, but then back away, as if to say “Wait a minute, how does this work?” Finally, a literal leap of faith, and he flew to mom and dad in the crepe myrtle. We were concerned, checking to make sure he found his parents in the tree. Night was falling, and we could hear thunder in the distance. The next morning, the show was on again. Parents and baby together in the crepe myrtle, calling to the others. Then the next one, and then the next. All of this took the better part of a Saturday morning, but we didn’t mind. It was fascinating. This was nature, created by the one true God, at its finest. And once they were all settled in

Holli Griffin walks through the AU archway and is greeted by President Whitaker.

the crepe myrtle, the parents flew to another tree, calling them again to follow. And just like that, we were empty nesters. Literally. Last weekend, we took our oldest daughter Holli to Anderson University in South Carolina where she began classes today as a freshman. Some parents call this the “drop-off,” but it was so much more than that. We had two great days at this amazing university, which is a small private school that humbly calls itself “intentionally Christian.” When we arrived Saturday morning to move her into the dorm, student volunteers with smiling faces appeared to help us carry all of her stuff into the building. The next morning, there was a freshman family worship service and the “Archway Walk,” where all 600 freshmen marched down Boulevard, shook the President’s hand, and entered into the next chapter of their lives. From the front lawn of the school, my teary eye fell upon a house finch, shuffling through some pine straw, and I thought about our little friends from a past Spring. In much the same way, we were helping to call to our daughter, encouraging her to fly higher and higher, as she pursues her college degree two and a half hours away from the nest and 17 total turns, according to MapQuest, but who’s counting? Thanks to the miracle of facebook and texting, Holli is never far away. We will stay in touch more than most families do living under the same roof. But I am thankful for the experience of last weekend, and the confidence the faculty and staff at Anderson gave to my wife and me. So many of our friends have younger children, and we’re far from old. But we remind them all that tapping on the glass at the front door is a sign of things to come. Enjoy the view while you can. For soon enough, it will be time for them to fly away.

record number of students graduate during AU commencement 255 graduates marks a record number for the University 255 Anderson University students received their diplomas during commencement exercises in early May. One of the South’s most unique and scenic graduation ceremonies, the AU commencement took place under the 100-yearold oak trees on the front lawn of campus in picture perfect spring weather. Senator Lindsey Graham delivered the commencement address praising the growth and recognition being given to Anderson University over the past three years and urging the graduates to develop the strength to stand up for the values

instilled in them by the University. Graham noted that many of those values are under assault in current American discourse; but that in defending them, students should remember civility and respect. The senator also noted that the graduates would be inheriting a troubled world as they leave the University. “These are difficult times you are inheriting,” he said. “Our nation has a troubled economy and the world is at war. We have faced more difficult times than this, however, and I firmly believe our best days lie ahead.” An honorary Doctor of Humanities degree was awarded to multiple Grammy award-winning composer, arranger, and bandleader, Johnny Mann, who recently composed a new alma mater for the second 100 years of Anderson University. The school was founded in 1911 and began celebrating its centennial this fall. Anderson granted more than 30 graduate degrees as well, including the first graduating class in the institution’s MBA program.

Anderson pursues new program in nursing With the approval by the South Carolina Board of Nursing on Thursday, May 20th of its nursing program feasibility study, Anderson University is now engaged in the development of a self-evaluation report to obtain approval by the Board to begin an undergraduate nursing program. The target date for initiation of the program is 2012. In order to develop the feasibility study presented to the State Board, AU enlisted the help of Dr. Tim Smith of Union University. Dr. Smith, a veteran of nursing higher education, is one of the architects of the highly successful and rapidly growing program at the Jackson, Tennessee school. Like Anderson, Union is a Baptist university. Smith found that there was a high attraction to providing nursing education within a Christian community.

6 | CAMPUS NEWS

“Nurses often view their work as a calling,” says Smith, “and the incorporation of one’s personal calling with the development of nursing graduates that embrace the service of humanity often attracts nursing faculty to a Christian university. A faith-based institution has the opportunity to attract faculty members who can match the nature of their profession, which is serving humanity, with their own spiritual calling of serving as Christ’s arms and legs.” Because of this unique calling on many hearts of nursing educators, Smith’s experience has been that faith-based institutions do not feel the impact of the nursing faculty shortage like many other types of institutions. Anderson will now conduct an evaluation phase to develop more specific details of a potential program for review by the Board of Nursing. Those processes must be satisfactorily completed before students can be recruited or any possible time frame for the application process can be considered. The plan put forth in the feasibility study, which could be altered at any time by the Board of Nursing, calls for renovating existing space on campus into classroom and laboratory space for the new program.

AU to launch unprecedented mobile learning initiative

“Quite simply, teaching moral responsibility in the use of the power of knowledge may be the most important duty of a Christian institution of higher education,” says Parker. “In light of the potential impacts of digital technology, it is more imperative than ever that faith-based institutions like ours address teaching and learning in the digital age, an age in which students have unparalleled access to information.”

Apple’s new iPad and similar devices currently being developed could become the notebook of the future at Anderson University as the institution launches a cutting-edge Mobile Learning Initiative aimed at integrating technology into the collegiate academic experience. Recommended by a presidentially-appointed Mobile Learning Team in early July and endorsed by the president and members of AU’s Senior Leadership Team later in the month, the program will bring the versatile iPad into the classroom in a way few, if any, universities are attempting at the present time. The Mobile Learning Team recommended the piloting in this academic year of a few selected courses using wireless technology and a mobile device, Apple’s new iPad, as the primary tool for teaching and learning through digital communication, research, and class collaboration. The proposal also forecasts adoption of the iPad for general use throughout the curriculum beginning in 2011 as well as creation and implementation of a Mobile Learning Fellows Program that will incentivize faculty innovation and creativity through mobile learning. “The point is not to rush blindly to the latest digital technologies” says Dr. Danny Parker, Anderson University Provost. “The point is to employ new digital technologies effectively, with wisdom and sound professional standards, to enhance the teaching and learning experience and to empower our students to use knowledge effectively and with sound intellectual and moral judgment.” The Mobile Learning Initiative comes after research by several members of the Anderson administration into the importance of harnessing the current explosion of technology to create a more robust and relevant learning experience for students.

The goal of the Mobile Learning Team is not only to make sure Anderson is not left behind by the wave of digital learning and technology, but more importantly, to be a leader among colleges and universities. Embracing and integrating technology has been at the forefront of Anderson University’s strategic plan in recent years. AU currently offers approximately 200 online courses each year. Three undergraduate and two graduate programs may be taken entirely online, as can most of the school’s General Education program. Dr. Benjamin Deaton was hired in June as Coordinator of Instructional Design and will work with faculty to design online and other technology-based courses. While the iPad will serve as the foundational device in the initial stages of the Mobile Learning Initiative, the use of digital technology in the classroom will not necessarily be limited to any one device or delivery platform. The aim of the Mobile Learning Team is to develop a culture of technology that will enhance student learning and teaching at Anderson, whatever the rapidly changing digital landscape may offer in the future.

real world training for real world ministry

“Sixty percent of seminary students are out of the ministry within five years,” said Waggoner, president and publisher of B&H Publishing Group and a former dean at Southern Seminary in Louisville, Ky. “They are ill-prepared to cope with the challenges and conflict they find in the local church.”

AU’s College of Christian Studies merges biblical foundation with 21st-century service by Sara Horn

Fourteen Master of Ministry students sit in groups of three or four, thoughtful expressions on their faces. They’re working on a scenario: the boat they are in has caught fire. There’s only so much time before it sinks and they’ll need to take the most useful items to survive in the waiting life raft. Their task: prioritize the list of 15 items in front of them from what’s most important to what isn’t needed. The catch? The entire team has to reach consensus. These students are going through the first of two Summer Intensive weeks held by the David T. Clamp Graduate School of Christian Ministry. Like the name sounds, they’re intense, contentpacked and full of practical application to help pastors and ministry leaders excel in the roles in which God has placed them. Dr. Gary Bredfeldt is the visiting professor guiding the castaway conversation in this Leadership in Ministry II course. His goal is to get the students to understand the importance of decision making and the principles behind it. “When we think of consensus decisions, we often think everybody has to agree; that’s not the case,” Bredfeldt explained. “The goal is that everybody is part of the process.” It is topics like these – from team building for church or ministry staff, to handling conflict resolution taught by the other visiting professor of the week, Brad Waggoner – that is a draw for students who choose the Master of Ministry program at Anderson, both on campus and online.

8 | CAMPUS NEWS

It’s this statistic that the College of Christian Studies wants to change through its intentionally strategic approach in course-design and faculty selection. “Three of the courses in our Master of Ministry degree program — almost 20 percent of the degree — are focused on leadership,” said Dr. Michael Duduit, dean of the CCS, whose vision has laid the groundwork for the graduate program in ministry. “The most recent additions to our faculty come to us from roles as pastors in local churches, so they bring with them not only strong academic credentials and a passion for teaching, but also years of experience in leading churches.” That same emphasis on practical ministry training is also making an impact on the undergraduate curriculum in Christian Studies, which has nearly doubled since the school was created last year. Courses in preaching, leadership, pastoral ministry, pastoral care, evangelism, youth ministry and more are providing students with practical preparation for ministry service.

“Our goal is to be one of the premier centers for ministry education in the nation,” Duduit asserts. “That will require solid preparation in biblical and theological studies and a commitment to practical disciplines that goes beyond most other programs. And that’s where we are heading.”

The College of Christian Studies Welcomes New Faculty Members Dr. Bryan Cribb, Assistant Professor of Christian Studies. A native of Austell, Ga., Dr. Cribb came to Anderson University following a five-year tenure at Brewton-Parker College in Mt. Vernon, Ga. He holds degrees in political science and mathematics from Furman University in Greenville, S.C. After a call to ministry, he received his M.Div. and a Ph.D. in Old Testament theology from Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Ky.

Dr. Chuck Fuller, Assistant Professor of Christian Studies. Dr. Fuller comes to Anderson University with 13 years of experience in pastoral ministry, serving churches in Kentucky and Indiana. He holds a B.A. in Christian Studies from Campbellsville University and an M.Div. and Ph.D. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. His primary field of study for the Ph.D. was in Christian preaching, with additional studies in systematic theology and philosophy. Before arriving at AU, Dr. Fuller was pastor at Bethany Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky., and adjunct professor of Christian preaching at Boyce College of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Additionally, Dr. Fuller has served on committees and boards of the Kentucky Baptist Convention.

On the Christian Studies calendar: Dr. Kristopher Barnett, Assistant Professor of Christian Ministry and Associate Dean of the Clamp Graduate School of Christian Ministry. Dr. Barnett is a graduate of Southwestern Baptist Seminary with a Master of Divinity in Biblical Languages (2001) and a Ph.D. in preaching. His dissertation was A Historical/Critical Analysis of Dialogical Preaching. His undergrad work was completed at Angelo State University in Texas with a B.A. in Communication. Prior to joining the CCS faculty, Dr. Barnett served as pastor to three different churches: Forestburg Baptist Church and Ridglea West Baptist Church in Texas, and most recently, East Pickens Baptist Church in Pickens, S.C.

AU study abroad goes down under

typically pay for, this one and all CGE programs will have a faith-based element as well. In Sydney, Anderson students will stay near the worldwide “mega church” Hillsong and have access to programs there.

Options for Anderson students to study abroad have taken a kangaroo leap forward as a class full of students headed to Sydney in Australia in September to study for the semester. Anderson is the pilot university for a new group of study abroad opportunities through the Consortium for Global Education. CGE is an umbrella organization of large and small faithbased universities in the U.S. The new initiative, which begins with Anderson in Australia this fall, will expand to other locations such as Ecuador and Lebanon later in the year as other colleges pattern their programs after the one at AU. Students from each CGE university will travel to a foreign location for study while retaining their full-time student status at their own school. Students from non-CGE universities may also take part in the program, but will be students of the host university during the semester of study. The new program differs from previous study abroad opportunities at AU in that it will be a yearly program and is expected to grow from year to year as more new students become aware and plan their academic program of study to allow for the overseas semester during their junior year. There were far more students interested in the program for this year than were able to participate due to the scheduling of their classes in the freshman and sophomore years. That will change as incoming students become aware of the yearly opportunity. One of the most popular study abroad destinations, Sydney offers a wealth of study and internship opportunities for the 14 Anderson students traveling there this semester. Each student has an internship lined up in Australia to go along with his or her studies. Another unique aspect of the Anderson program is that, unlike for-profit study abroad programs students

“This is an awesome opportunity for our students,” says Dr. Jane Cahaly, Anderson’s director of international programs. “They will stay in a lovely condominium, gain a semester’s worth of credit for the same price as attending Anderson for a semester.” Dr. Danny Rhodes will be the full-time faculty member on site for the Anderson in Sydney program. According to Dr. Cahaly, the presence of a faculty member from the institution is another huge selling point for the CGE model of study abroad as opposed to other options. Apart from their internships with Australian companies and their regular course load while in Sydney, students will also get to study Australian art in a special “Art Down Under” class that is a part of the program.

spring storm topples ancient AU oaks A violent mid-June thunderstorm focused media attention on the Anderson campus as it displayed both the destructive power of Mother Nature and the remarkable spirit of the AU campus family. Though no tornado was ever confirmed by meteorologists, winds of between 60 and 80 mph swept through the campus on the evening of June 15th that were strong enough to topple roughly a dozen large trees on the Anderson campus, some of which were 100 years old. Two trees fell on buildings as a corner of the student center housing the Center for Student Success sustained damage as did the back corner office of the admissions building. Campus officials

awoke Wednesday morning to a campus that looked like a war zone, with limbs scattered over the front lawn and parking lots and all power lost to the Boulevard Historic District surrounding campus. One tree at the front side of the Merritt Administration Building fell directly onto one of the iconic swings in front of the building, blasting it into a pile of kindling and twisted metal. Despite the lack of communication with no phone or email service, the campus community rallied through a shared sense of concern and up to 150 volunteers from the staff, a few faculty, and even the student body were in place by late morning, hauling limbs, raking leaves, and using chainsaws to restore the campus to a usable state in advance of the second summer orientation session slated for Thursday. By afternoon, students who had heard about the damage on television and even a few concerned members of the public arrived to spell exhausted staff and faculty members who had been laboring for hours in stifling heat and humidity.

“I really can’t thank everyone, especially the large numbers of staff, enough,” said Dr. Evans Whitaker, AU President, after wielding a chainsaw during the morning hours. “With no way to communicate, they just came to lend a hand. That’s the kind of place this is.” Local television reporters marveled at the spirit of the campus as well, remarking during evening telecasts that through hard work, most of the damage had been cleared enough for orientation to take place as scheduled the next day. No academic space or student housing was affected by the falling trees, and the damage to the roofs of the two office buildings was largely repaired within a two-week time frame. By all accounts, it was a situation that could have been much worse. There were no injuries as the storm occurred during a time when very little campus activity was underway.

AU mission team finds third world-like needs closer to home While it is common for Anderson University mission teams to spread out to places like Honduras, Italy, India, and other mission fields across the globe in any given year, one of the most unique and rewarding endeavors of 2010 took place in Kentucky as a team of Anderson women ministered in a poverty stricken rural area of that state. Partnering with the Saluda Baptist Association, The North American Mission Board of the SBC, and its missionaries in Jenkins, Ky., the Anderson co-eds had a rewarding and impactful experience

with people the likes of which most of them would never have met otherwise. Using a house that was being renovated into what would eventually be a church as home base, the AU team set out to change the lives of young mothers with the love of Christ in a bleak area. Missionaries Bessie and Lester McPeet, who work with NAMB in Jenkins, are using a ministry called “God’s Love From a Diaper Bag” to reach women who in many cases are destitute and without hope. The project, that began out of the trunk of a car and is now a successful national ministry, features gift bags for young mothers and their babies filled with items they could not afford to buy. The Anderson women organized a mass baby shower for the women and distributed their gifts, sharing the love of Christ and sharing hope with their new friends as well. “The most touching part of the whole trip was watching the mothers open their gifts,” says

Rebekah Lippiatt, one of the Anderson students. “They were so grateful and appreciated it more than we could realize. It’s amazing to think how we don’t have to go to a foreign country to help because there are people that need help right in our backyards. The baby showers were an awesome success!” Becky Walker, Anderson’s associate campus minister of Women’s Ministry, echoed the sentiment. “It was so incredible to watch the favor of the Lord upon each situation and person. Prayer walking, baby showers, listening to the brokenness of souls – it all drew us together.” For the missionaries in Jenkins who often feel overwhelmed by the needs around them, the prospect of 20 energetic college students and three sponsors descending on the little town provided a chance to make an impact on the needs around them. The Anderson students

created quite a stir in the small community, even being asked to sing on the tiny AM radio station. Despite their temporary celebrity status, the AU co-eds never wavered in their focus on the needs of the women they came to help. “This weekend has been awesome. I’ve watched each of the girls shine with the love of Jesus,” says missionary Bessie McPeet. “They have shown each person they met how we are supposed to treat those around us with love and compassion. They realized that the love and compassion can be shared in their own hometowns as well as in their own state. I am so proud of each young lady.” While other students may have ministered in more exotic locales during the spring semester, it appears that no one took a trip that made a more lasting impact in their lives.

AU business students win second straight national award Anderson University’s Students In Free Enterprise, or SIFE, team recently won the Sam’s Club Environmental Sustainability Challenge for a second straight year. The retail giant established the competition to challenge top business programs from around the country to develop cutting edge programs to assist Sam’s Club business partners in becoming more efficient and environmentally sound. The Anderson team selected two local businesses, one a non-profit agency (Anderson Interfaith Ministries) and the other a restaurant (The Pompous Pig) and conducted an environmental audit. Then using materials provided by Sam’s, the team recommended changes related to electricity,

water, and paper usage; and the savings just over the first three months were statistically significant. “To win it last year was a huge surprise to all of us, since it was the first time we competed with this type of SIFE project. We knew we had a very good project and presentation, but the competition, just like this year, was very strong,” said Dr. Miren Ivankovic, AU business professor. “Then to be invited yet again to the Sam’s Club headquarters and be placed among the top six schools in the nation, then the top three and finally, win the whole thing at the Nationals in Minneapolis, speaks volumes about our students and their effort. This was very special and I am very proud to be a part of this team.” The AU SIFE team received $1,000 from Sam’s for making the finals of the competition and a $5,000 prize for winning the national title. From left: Professor Valerie Owens, Christa Blunt, Katie Harrison, Mark Deichman, A.J. Fakoornejad, Dr. Miren Ivankovic, and Dr. Bill Laing with their $5,000 prize for winning the national title.

AU music students win state and regional awards

AU music professor Deedy Francis, who teaches many of the regional qualifiers and the top state and regional winners, says that while AU typically wins in the highest levels of competition, this is a banner year for recognition of the program.

Continuing a strong legacy of excellence in vocal music performance, several Anderson University students were recently recognized at the South Carolina awards competition for the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Additionally, AU music students won top honors at the MidAtlantic Regional competition, which includes winners and qualifiers from colleges, universities, and conservatories in South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. At the state level, Anderson sophomore Octavia Hall was the top winner among her classification, while Maggie Hill from Gilbert, S.C., won the top award among juniors. In addition, the following AU students qualified for the regional competition in their respective categories: Regional Qualifiers: Classical Categories: Anna Sheehan (student of Dr. Tommy Watson), Sophomore College Women; Christopher Hulsey, College Junior Men; Kalon Moon, College Junior Men; and Kenneth Washington, College Senior Men (student of Dr. Tommy Watson). Musical Theater Categories: Elyse LeRoy, Brittany Roether, and Crystal Stewart, Freshman/ Sophomore College Women; Maggie Hill and Lizzie Porcari, Junior/Senior College Women. At the regional competition, Maggie Hill tied for First Place in Junior/Senior College Musical Theater Women and won Third Place in Junior College Women (Classical). Additionally, Octavia Hall and Christopher Hulsey earned a Superior rating.

Junior Maggie Hill received top honors at the state and regional levels.

“I am very proud of all of our students that qualified for the regionals and also those that won at the state and regional levels. It is certainly the highest number we have ever had,” she said. “It is a special honor for Octavia Hall, who won her category last year at state as well. Maggie Hill placed second in her Musical Theater category at last years regional competition, but this year, went on to tie for First Place in Junior/Senior College Musical Theater Women and win Third Place in Junior College Women (Classical). To both place in her classical category and win in the Music Theater category is very exciting for Miss Hill. All of these accomplishments send a loud and clear message to prospective voice students that Anderson University is serious about vocal music.”

AU graphic design students win top national awards including “best in show” Anderson University graphic design students cemented the program’s status as one of the best in the nation recently by winning three national ADDY Awards including “Best in Show,” signifying the top student design among American universities. The victory on the national level follows a complete sweep of the regional awards in South Carolina and multiple awards in the Eastern region of the U.S. On the national level, Anderson University was one of only two U.S. universities to claim as many as three awards. AU student Chris Waldrop was the top winner with a gold award and the coveted “Best in Show” recognition. In addition, design student Kat Carter also won a gold ADDY. The prestigious 2 4 | FA C U LT Y A N D S T U D E N T S

national ADDY Award Student Competition selects only 15 top designs for consideration from hundreds of entries throughout the nation. For Anderson University to claim three awards is truly remarkable. “The unprecedented amount of success that has been bestowed upon the students in the Graphic Design concentration over the past year is truly humbling,” said graphic design professor Tim Speaker, who teaches both winning students. “For AU to not only be able to compete with the top art universities in the country, but to be able to achieve such laudable awards at the national level is an extraordinary blessing. I am extremely proud of our national, regional, and local award winners this year. Each student was able to reach their potential through hard work and dedication and through the continued efforts of our dedicated faculty. This is a victory for all of the members of the AU Art Department.” This marks the second year in a row that AU has been among the very few universities to win multiple awards at the national level and the first that an Anderson student has been named “Best in Show.” Above left: ADDY winners Chris Waldrop and Kat Carter Above right: Chris Waldrop’s “Best in Show” piece

Lights, camera...excellence! Centennial events highlight 2010-2011 arts calendar.

Anderson University pulls out all the stops with third annual President’s Gala A host of talented Anderson University singers, dancers, and instrumentalists presented the President’s Gala concert in late spring at AU’s Henderson Auditorium in the Rainey Fine Arts Center. In its third year, the President’s Gala has become a beloved event for the arts in the Anderson area and throughout the Upstate. The program featured a variety of top performers from the AU College of Visual and Performing Arts. Singers from the music and theater departments along with the AU orchestra, brass quintet and string quintet took on a variety of musical genres, giving audience members something memorable to take home with them.

Performances highlighted classic American composer George Gershwin, including music from American in Paris. The evening included familiar favorites “Fly Me to the Moon” and “Come Fly with Me” along with the timeless piece “Gabriel’s Oboe.” The concert concluded with a moving presentation of “Non Nobis, Domine” (Not to Us, Oh Lord) from Kenneth Branagh’s film version of Henry V.

AU playhouse delivers the laughs with Harvey The Anderson University Playhouse closed its 0910 season with Mary Chase’s play Harvey. The AU production sold out before it opened and played to enthusiastic audiences. Harvey is the classic American comedy from the 1940s (Pulitzer Prize Winner in 1944), full of eccentric characters and lots of laughs.

The story of the quirky Elwood P. Dowd and his imaginary six-foot high rabbit has endeared itself to audiences for 65 years. Taking place during a tough time in American history, including the Depression of the thirties and World War II, people turned to the theatre for escape. The story of the loveable, though slightly crazy, Elwood P. Dowd was an immediate hit; and the film version released in 1950 featuring Jimmy Stewart was one of the most popular films of the period and continues to be a favorite.

Ultimately from her beloved story, playwright Mary Chase asks us to count the cost of normalcy. The AU Playhouse production reminded us that a little zaniness and the ability to laugh at ourselves is a good thing.

Trojans in motion! Trojans leave Conference Carolinas on a high note.

athletic update honors night The AU Athletics Department closed out an outstanding year by honoring its student-athletes, with volleyball’s Jamie Lancaster and wrestler J.J. Jackson taking home top honors. Lancaster, an outside hitter from Fountain Inn, S.C., capped off a stellar junior year by winning the Murphy Osborne Award, which is presented by the Conference Carolinas to the conference studentathlete determined to have the most outstanding academic achievements. Jackson captured the school’s second NCA A National Championship in five years by winning four consecutive matches in Omaha to win the 157-pound class.

Hawn cup For an unprecedented fourth time, Anderson was awarded the annual Conference Carolinas Joby Hawn Cup in recognition of excellence in all conference-sponsored sports. After claiming the award for the first time in 2007, Anderson refused to relinquish the honor, also winning it in 2008 and 2009 to become the only member of the league to win the honor four straight years and boast the longest streak since High Point won the honor five consecutive times (1975-80) prior to the existence of the CarolinasVirginia Athletic Conference. This was also the fourth time a South Carolina member of the conference claimed the honor. AU was the first South Carolina member to win the Hawn Cup and the first current member of the league to win both the Hawn Cup and the Messick Award in the same athletic year (2006-07).

Beville cup In an intense rivalry where the final outcome hasn’t always shown the level of competition, Anderson brought the Beville Cup back to the Electric City. The Beville Cup, originally known as the Anderson-Erskine Cup, is a competition between Erskine and Anderson’s athletics programs that was established in the fall of 2003 and is sponsored by ARAMARK.

3 4 | athletic news

The Anderson-Erskine Cup was changed to the “Beville Cup” in the spring of 2007 in honor of Bobby and Susie Beville. Susie Beville was a graduate of Anderson College and Erskine College, where she played softball. Susie Beville passed away in the summer of 2004. Her husband Bobby played baseball both at AU and Erskine and went on to serve as baseball coach at Anderson before becoming the athletic director for 10 years. This year’s struggle went down to the wire, with Anderson claiming a 20-18 victory.

baseball The AU baseball team made a Cinderella run in the conference tournament by eliminating No. 24 nationally ranked Erskine College on day three of the event. The No. 6 seed Trojans upset the top two seeds in the conference tourney. Anderson pulled off a shocker in the first round by defeating nationally ranked and No. 1 seed Mount Olive College, but fell just shy of capturing the championship.

softball Standout shortstop Meredith Knox was named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic AllAmerica Softball First-Team following the Trojans season. Knox, a senior from Washington, N.C., was one of 11 players selected to the national team. She was the only North Carolina native and the lone representative of any school in South Carolina in either the University or College divisions.

tennis The AU men’s tennis team made their eighth consecutive appearance in the NCA A Tournament and 11th overall before falling to 25th-ranked Lees-McRae. Anderson posted a 13-9 mark and wrapped up the season ranked 24th nationally.

track and field The Trojan track and field teams saw eight Anderson athletes earn all-conference honors following the conference championships. Lauren Sloan closed out her stellar 2010 campaign by being named Field Athlete of the Year after helping lead the Trojan women to a second-place finish at the championships. Teammates Whitney

Bishoff, Durecelle Campbell, Krishaun Hall, and Re’Jeania Evans joined Sloan on the squad. Three men’s track athletes garnered second-team accolades after the team collected a fourth-place finish overall, with Josh Butler, Matt Shaffer, and Alex Jordan collecting the honor.

golf Anderson women’s golfer Sophie Dembroski, along with teammate Laura Buyers and men’s golfer Ryan Booth, were named to the Conference Carolinas’ All-Conference Teams. Dembroski was named first-team, while Buyers, a sophomore from Aledo, Texas, earned third-team accolades. Booth was named to the men’s second-team following a season that saw him notch four top-10 finishes, including two appearances in the top five. Right: Anderson reclaimed the Beville Cup after an intense competition with Erskine College. Below: Athletic Director Nancy Simpson presents Jamie Lee Lancaster and J.J. its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

After a rich history of 11 years in Conference Carolinas, the last four of which they won the league’s all-sports trophy, the Anderson Trojans officially became the 10th member of the South Atlantic Conference on July 1.

The SAC was founded in 1975 and consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College.

Though AU coaches and athletes enjoyed rich competition and rivalries in Conference Carolinas, they also look forward to bigger challenges, new associations, and a more logical travel schedule. AU athletic teams will continue their long time rivalry with Erskine College in an out-of-conference setup.

In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the SAC sponsored 10 sports: football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, and men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women’s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993), and women’s golf (1999).

Below is a brief history of the SAC: The distant forerunner of the SAC, which is headquartered in Rock Hill, S.C., was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as

3 6 | athletic news

The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. Today the conference is a group of 10 private, liberal and civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCA A Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCA A postseason play. In addition to Anderson, the league membership now includes Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.; Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C.; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.; Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.; Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.; and Wingate University in Wingate, N.C.

the ultimate goal of having a wrestler compete for and win a national title. Kelly has seen two of his wrestlers accomplish that feat in just the past five years. Anderson, and South Carolina for that matter, are not exactly known as hotbeds of the sport either, making the accomplishment even more noteworthy. “It is an incredible feat to have two national champions over a five year period of time,” says Kelly. “When Careef Robertson won his national title back in 2005, there was a feeling of euphoria. I was excited and in shock all at the same time. It was a gratifying feeling to reach the pinnacle of our sport. When J.J. won his national title in March, I experienced similar feelings. Alumni News Annual Report and Honor Roll of Donors

noted medical inventor credits AU for foundation in life by Evelyn Beck

At Anderson, Deal “met some people who discipled me” and got very involved in campus ministries. Larry Thompson, now a chaplain at Hospice in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., roomed with Deal at Anderson and remembers how they worked together to build up Christian fellowship and to start a ministry for special needs children and adults in Anderson County. “For both of us, that was a very formative time, a very positive time,” says Thompson. “Jeff began a life of serving others that eventually led to the medical field and studies in anthropology. All of that was very, very young for him then. He was still becoming the man he would be.” Deal went on to Furman University and then to the Medical University of South Carolina and worked for 17 years as a board-certified otolaryngologist in private practice in Charleston. When the loss of much of the vision in one eye due to retinal disease kept him from performing microsurgery, he shifted his focus to other areas of interest, including mission work and the study of anthropology. “It worked out for the best,” he says. Today he serves as the director of health research for Water Missions International, a nonprofit, Christian engineering organization that serves the water and sanitation needs of people in developing countries and disaster areas. He and his wife Hart live in Charleston and have four children. Their youngest son Andrew recently graduated from Anderson University.

Though he didn’t recognize it at the time, Jeff Deal’s decision to attend Anderson University was one of the best steps he ever took. After an injury derailed his opportunity to play basketball at the University of Georgia in 1972, Deal enrolled at what was then known as Anderson College, which wasn’t too far from his home in Toccoa, Georgia, and which offered him a basketball scholarship. Though he had recently become a Christian, Deal says that “the Christian element was not a reason I chose Anderson. But it turned out to be God’s providence. Anderson was what I needed and I didn’t even know it. It would have been a disaster to go anywhere else.”

4 4 | A lumni news

But even a position that involves travel to such places as Honduras and Uganda doesn’t prevent Deal from pursuing other interests. He is also an inventor. His most notable achievement is an ultraviolet sterilizer marketed under the name TRU-D (Total-Room Ultraviolet Disinfector) by Lumalier Corporation of Memphis, Tenn. The device addresses the problem of bacterial contamination in health care environments as well as other high risk areas such as laboratories and prisons. In the U.S. alone, 99,000 patients die of health care-associated infections each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Worldwide, Deal puts that number at 2.5 million. He wanted a way to be able to truly disinfect a patient’s room, for example. It had to

be automated to remove the problem of human error, and it had to be able to reach into “shadow” areas such as underneath a food tray or completely around the hand rail on a bed. Deal worked with his brother, a physicist employed by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), to create a prototype. Then Deal contacted Lumalier CEO Chuck Dunn, who was initially skeptical. “When he called and explained his invention, I told him there was no way it could work,” says Dunn, whose company has over 40 years of experience in ultraviolet technologies. “But he presented evidence to me over the next few months and convinced me that we had an invention that would improve the health care environment. Jeff is a true genius. This device is eventually going to be in widespread use and is a technology that will be accepted.” Already, TRU-D is being used in hundreds of facilities in the U.S., Europe, and Australia. TRU-D uses small wavelengths of ultraviolet light to kill germs; it gets at shadow areas through

reflection. It does all this with sensors and without harmful chemicals. Institutions can purchase the device from Lumalier or they can combat single outbreaks through a company run by Deal’s son Russell. Among the crises resolved by TRU-D were a tuberculosis outbreak at a museum and a staph outbreak in a locker room. It even proved effective in a trial against anthrax conducted by The Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute. “There are no resistant organisms to this wavelength,” says Deal. “We’re pretty happy with this machine.” Deal is currently working on several other patents. One uses a similar wavelength to clean scopes for looking at the colon, stomach, or sinuses. Another is a device to digitize microscopy to help developing countries so that someone could put a slide into a microscope and anyone in the world could read it for that person. That’s the approach Jeff Deal has taken throughout his life, including his time as a student at Anderson. He identifies a problem. Then he creates a solution.
