relatively new Derby, The Jockey Club Invitational Derby, run in September at Belmont Park. With an impressive course record time recorded when winning the Gp.3 Bahrain Trophy Stakes at Newmarket in July and followed up with a decent third in Goodwood’s Gp2. Qatar Gordon Stakes, the traditional route would be to aim for a shot of classic glory at Doncaster in the St Leger. However, the New York race carried
a purse fund of $1,000,000 and being contested for just the second time, the race was ungraded. So a win would allow the horse to run back without a penalty. Coupled with the fact that the horse’s owners - Earle Mack and Team Valor are both US-based, the trip to New York became the obvious route to follow. The race itself wasn’t without drama.
