W E L C O M E to A Child’s Guide to the Divine Liturgy! We at Ancient Faith Publishing are excited to offer you this small book to use as an aid during the Divine Liturgy or simply as a tool for learning more about the Church and our Faith. This book was designed with several things in mind:

C C

C C

We divided the book into color-coded sections so that each part is easy to find. We intentionally kept the amount of text in the Divine Liturgy section of this book spare. Even for children who can read, we want to encourage their attention forward, toward the altar. We included illustrations and vocabulary for the very young child, as well as prayers, quotes, and psalms for older children to learn and read. The glossary at the end defines terms and vocabulary that are often heard throughout the liturgical year.

We wish you, and all the children of the Orthodox faith, continual growth toward Christ as we all seek to be lights to the world, and as we help each other toward the Kingdom of Heaven! 1

THE DIVINE

LITURGY

Whenever we enter the church and draw near to the heavenly mysteries, we ought to approach with all humility and fear, both because of the presence of the angelic powers and out of the reverence due to the sacred oblation; for as the angels are said to have stood by the Lord’s body when it lay in the tomb, so we must believe that they are present in the celebration of the Mysteries of His most sacred Body at the time of consecration. — St. Bede the Venerable 13

The Twelve Feasts

NOVEMBER 21

The Presentation of the Theotokos Today is the prelude of the good will of God, of the preaching of the salvation of mankind. The Virgin appears in the temple of God, in anticipation proclaiming Christ to all. Let us rejoice and sing to her: “Rejoice, O fulfillment of the Creator’s dispensation.”
