Dukakis Center Activity
The semester’s Dukakis Lecture was delivered by historian and classicist Angelos Chaniotis on the theme “Graffiti in ancient cities – Images and voices of daily life.” Chaniotis, Professor of Ancient History and Classics at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, spoke to a standing room only audience of more than 80 people in one of the Bissell Library lounges, thanks in large part to the efforts of Anatolia colleague Haido Samara. The Dukakis Center co-sponsored Maria Kyriakidou’s annual gender and citizenship conference, this year on the theme “Arts, Aesthetics and Power”. The conference gathered several leading local and regional scholars, including keynote speaker Nayia Kamenou of the University of Cyprus. In June Anatolia alumnus Harris Mylonas presented his new book on “The Politics of Nation-Building: Making Co-Nationals, Refugees, and Minorities (Cambridge University Press, 2013). Mylonas, Assistant Professor at The Elliot School, George Washington University, was accompanied by Professors George Th. Mavrogordatos, Elpida Vogli, and Othon Anastasakis at Ianos Bookstore on Aristotle Square. Professor Anastasakis, in Thessaloniki again for the Dukakis Center’s annual summer Seesox Salonica Seminar, also took part in a briefing on the Greek sovereign debt crisis and its implications for southeast Europe, with local businessman Nikos Efthimiadis, for the benefit of ten German Marshal Fund Memorial Fellows, hosted by Elizabeth Phocas of Eliamep. The Fellows are mid-career Americans in both the private and public sectors who are chosen and funded by the GMF, a German institution, to travel throughout Europe. This is the fourth time ACT has collaborated with Eliamep to brief fellows travelling through Thessaloniki. Meanwhile, thanks to the efforts of Ruth Sutton and Laura Strieth, the Inspiration Exchange organized a celebration of International Women’s Day entitled “Big changes start with small solutions,” and the third on activist journalism. The latter event featured Athens-based journalists and bloggers Kostas Kallergis and Damian Mac Con Uladh.
ACT students shine at Startup Weekend! Serving as host and Platinum Sponsor for Startup Weekend Thessaloniki, ACT welcomed more than 150 people from throughout Northern Greece to the campus on first weekend in April. Keynote speaker, Mr. Paul Efmorfidis (CEO of Cocomat) inspired the crowd to “think creatively, live differently, and honor your ideas.” ACT students worked diligently throughout the weekend, participating on more than 6 of the different teams, and ultimately winning on a number of levels. First Prize was awarded to an ACT-led team, who developed “DressMeFast,” a smart-phone app for fashion-conscious consumers. The teams were mentored by seasoned professionals and the final efforts judged by a panel of distinguished experts, including Dr. Fanis Varvoglis Chair of ACT’s Anatolia School of Business. Startup Weekends are recognized throughout the world as a great source of entrepreneurial training, and given the positive performance of our students, ACT looks forward to their continued success. 68
Τελετή Αποφοίτησης στο Anatolia Elementary School
Ντυμένοι στα λευκά οι τελειόφοιτοι μαθητές του σχολείου αποχαιρέτησαν το Anatolia Elementary School σε μία συγκινητική Τελετή Αποφοίτησης. Το πρώτο μέρος της γιορτής επιμελήθηκε το ξενόγλωσσο τμήμα του σχολείου και οι καθηγήτριες Αγγλικών Αναστασία Πάσχου, Γαλλικών Κάτια Σοβατζή και Γερμανικών Νάνση Τζιάντη. Το δεύτερο μέρος ήταν αφιερωμένο στον ελληνικό κινηματογράφο. Τα παιδιά απέδωσαν εξαιρετικά τους ρόλους, αναβιώνοντας στιγμιότυπα από αγαπημένες ελληνικές ταινίες και σκορπίζοντας το γέλιο στους γονείς. Τα κείμενα, η σκηνοθεσία και η επιμέλεια της παράστασης ήταν του Σωτήρη Μπαμπατζάνη και οι χορογραφίες της Αθανασίας Φιλέντα. Στην αποφώνησή του ο Διευθυντής του Anatolia Elementary School Νίκος Αρναούτης ευχήθηκε αυτή η όμορφη ατμόσφαιρα να συνοδεύει κάθε αποφοίτηση και παρότρυνε τους απόφοιτους να τολμούν πάντα για το σωστό.
Ο Peter Pan προσγειώνεται στο Δημοτικό
Πειρατές, γοργόνες, Ινδιάνοι και ένας… κροκόδειλος εμφανίστηκαν στο Pappas Hall για να μεταφέρουν μικρούς και μεγάλους στη Χώρα του Ποτέ και στον μαγικό κόσμο του Peter Pan. Με αυτή τη θαυμάσια παράσταση στο αγαπημένο παραμύθι του James Matthew Barrie, το Anatolia Elementary School εγκαινίασε το δικό του Drama Club με συντονίστριες τις καθηγήτριες Μαρία Προεστοπούλου και Ιωάννα Χλέτση. Για δύο ημέρες, 13 και 14 Απριλίου, οι μικροί μαθητές έδωσαν τον καλύτερο εαυτό τους στην παραμυθένια παραγωγή στην αγγλική γλώσσα και στην οποία συμμετείχαν το Club Χορωδίας και το Club κρουστών του Δημοτικού.
Δωρεά λογοτεχνικών βιβλίων σε σχολεία της Πάτμου και του Έβρου
Στο πλαίσιο των κοινωνικών δράσεων του Κολλεγίου Ανατόλια, το Anatolia Elementary School συγκέντρωσε βιβλία για Δημοτικά Σχολεία που βρίσκονται σε απομακρυσμένες περιοχές της Ελλάδας. Η μεγάλη συμμετοχή μαθητών και γονέων του σχολείου, είχε ως αποτέλεσμα τη συγκέντρωση 400 λογοτεχνικών βιβλίων, ώστε να εμπλουτιστούν οι βιβλιοθήκες σε σχολεία της Πάτμου και του Έβρου. Συγκεκριμένα, 300 βιβλία παραδόθηκαν στον Δήμαρχο της Πάτμου Γρηγόρη Στόικο, για τους 280 μαθητές που φοιτούν στα δημοτικά σχολεία της Σκάλας Πάτμου, του Κάμπου, της Χώρας Πάτμου και των Αρκιών. Επίσης, 100 βιβλία παραδόθηκαν στο Δημοτικό Σχολείο Κυπρίνου του Δήμου Έβρου στο οποίο φοιτούν 66 μαθητές εκ των οποίων οι 46 είναι από τις γύρω περιοχές. Το Δημοτικό, όπως και το Γυμνάσιο του Κυπρίνου, είναι χαρακτηρισμένα ως σχολικά κέντρα και εξυπηρετούν τα χωριά: Φυλάκιο, Μηλιά, Πεντάλοφος, Θεραπιώ, Κόμαρα, Μικρή Δοξιπάρα και Μεγάλη Δοξιπάρα. Τα βιβλία παρέλαβε η Διευθύντρια του σχολείου, Θεοδώρα Κεσίδη. Η πρωτοβουλία του Anatolia Elementary School για τη συγκέντρωση βιβλίων για μαθητές που ζούνε σε απομακρυσμένες περιοχές της Ελλάδας θα συνεχιστεί και την επόμενη σχολική χρονιά. 69
