As a class, we were told we could choose any retail company we wanted. The company had to be heavily researched and needed to fit with the demographics of Kent, Ohio. Personally, I wanted a company that did not have a loca on because I wanted to start from scratch with the design process and not feel obligated to relate to a current company design. The company I choose was Threads 4 Thought.

The L.N. Gross Building In 1929, the L.N. Gross Company acquired their loca on in Kent, Ohio. At the me, L.N. Gross was a manufacturer of women’s clothing. Since L.N. Gross Company went out of business in 1984, the building has been used for various companies, including a car repair shop. For this project, a site visit was made to the building, 315 Gougler Ave., Kent, OH 44240, before design started. A erward, the assignment to create a retail space was given and the real challenge began.

Threads 4 Thought was founded on the idea that fashion needs to be sustainable as well. So, Threads uses organic and recycled materials in their clothing. The also became a Fair Trade cer fied company meaning all employees of their manufacturing plants in China, Kenya and India receive a fair hourly pay. Each purchase from Threads 4 Thought has the opportunity to be donated to New Roots, a charity for recently displaced refugees. New Roots teaches refugees how to farm na ve crop in their new land. Then, they teach refugees how to cook with and sell the crop at markets. This helps refugees with income and maintaining a healthy diet in their new home. This outlook on business was important to my design because of the inspira on pulled from the aloe vera plant.

RENDERED FLOOR PLAN

Upon entrance, Customers are pulled in by the teared height window displays, featuring manikins dressed in Threads 4 Thought a re. Customers are then pulled through the space, feeling ďŹ ltered as they explore the custom display pieces. Outside of the dressing rooms are movable display pieces featuring informa on on Threads 4 Thought being a Fair Trade cer ďŹ ed company. On the back wall to the right of the dressing rooms is a New Roots informa on and dona on center. Finally, centered are two check out desks, one for in-store and the other for online purchases.

Perspec ve of entrance

At the entrance, manikins are displayed along the curtain wall. The varying height tears create ver cal movement and interests. The tears are low enough to allow ease of changing the manikins when new apparel arrives.

The sec on dedicated to New Roots is going back to the healing aspect of aloe vera and Threads 4 Thought’s giving nature. The map on the back wall shows places refugees have found a new home with the help of New Roots. The tables in the center provide a loca on for pamphlets and more informa on on New Roots charity. Informa on is also available for dona on and volunteer opportuni es.

Display Pieces All of the display pieces are custom built. To reflect Threads 4 Thoughts prac ce of sustainability, all pieces are to be made from reclaimed wood. Because the wood is reclaimed from it’s original purpose, each piece will be uniquely different. A pale stain and sealer will be applied to give the pieces some unity. The metal is recycled so finishes may vary as well. All of the pieces will be on casters for easy rearrangement of the space.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Point of Purchase Desk Similar to the display pieces, the point to purchase desks are made from reclaimed wood. The two cashier registers are defined by glass panels, nted blue with an engraving of Threads 4 Thought’s logo on the front. While one side is for purchases made in store, the other is for online purchases because the company has a strong online presence.

The Aloe Vera plant is a simple yet unique plant. It has a protec ve exterior yet the inside is so and fleshy. It also filters out the toxins in the air and with those toxins create a substance used on cuts and burns. The Aloe Vera plant is HEALING and that is what the wall wants to be. Rela vely simple in design but with the use of plants and water, the wall wants to HEAL the mind, body and soul.

Tile Pa ern To the right is a mock up of the le pa ern on the wall. The pa ern can be seen in two different places. The first is enlarged to be plant holders. These plants are accessible to the public. The second is smaller to be the le for the water feature. The random shapes are inspired from an earlier project. The various shapes represent filtra on, rela ng back to the concept of healing.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Final The final product was a wall which healed. The water feature is a representa on of water filtra on and the green plant boxes help to produce oxygen and take away carbon dioxide. The wall heals more than just elements; the wall heals the inhabitants of the space. Running water is relaxing and the accessibility of the plant wall allows those passing by to have the opportunity to nature. By being able to pick some of the plants, an individual can take them and use them to heal a new surrounding

Stair Detail The custom stair case has blue nted glass treads. The blue is meant to relax those in the space. The glass of the stairs also allow light to pass freely into the space. The underside has a reflec ve surface so those below cannot look up at those on the stairs. The modern sleekness of the stairs es to the sleek, modern look of the wall itself while accomplishing a healing element.

Project Descrip on Social Sta on is a compe on hosted by the Interna onal Interior Design Associa on (IIDA) and sponsored by OFS Brands. This project was meant to show the integra on of co-working work spaces and social retail spaces. Both of these are uprising trends with the increase of technology and younger age groups entering the workplace. The workspace has to be converted into the pop-up or social retail space in less than two hours. The space was allowed to be uniquely designed with the excep on of two requirements. One was that at least half of the furniture specified had to be from OFS Brands. The second was the implementa on of Visual Magne cs. Visual Magne cs is a wall covering that allows for flexible sign-age and the ability to have removable shelving on the wall.

Building Background The building is located at 603 Munger Avenue in Dallas, Texas. Our space is on the seventh floor. Some characteris cs are the brick facade and wood and concrete interiors. The geographical loca on is one of the busiest areas in the city. Surrounded by restaurants and other businesses, this loca on is likely to draw many people in.

CONCEPT

Silica

Rendered floor plan

In purest form, silica takes the shape of irregular spheres. These spheres are uniform in size but will have varia ons in shape. Each has a central openness defined by a translucent perimeter. These pieces can work on their own, but they work much be er together. When the spheres cluster together, the individual pieces create a group. Their purpose is to make glass. Glass being highly malleable, inspires the flexibility of the Social Sta on. To grasp the importance of this glass making process, think of the silica spheres as people. Each is unique with its own purpose and can func on individually, on its own. But when clustered together, like in a workspace, they become be er. Collabora on between individuals happens and new ideas form. Each person is affected by another. Each interac on forms a stronger bond and these bonds create a community. The community is like the glass, always changing in rela on to what creates it.

ES The flooring throughout is original to the space, except in the workspaces. At the workspaces is a raised floor to allow for power in the space. The carpet is modular le so pieces can be changed when needed. In the workspace, all tables are movable and height adjustable. This is for the flexibility of layout and the ability to accommodate the workers. On most of the columns are custom booths for sea ng in the workspace and the employee lounge. The vibrant colors in the space are known to boost crea vity, energize and s mulate work ethic. Because of the vibrancy of color in the flooring and sea ng, the walls are kept neutral to break up the color. Sconces on the columns and corners of walls are to add indirect light to the space. In the recep on and wai ng are a Le Klint chandeliers to add movement to the space. Throughout the space are a combina on of linear and curvilinear lines for balance.

SPECIAL FEATURES

View of workspace by workshop

A Second Workspace With in Social Sta on is a “Makers Workshop”. The purpose of the workshop is for workers to be able to make prototypes and create their products in the building. The secondary workspace is for these workers. It allows for an easily accessible touch down workspace. The space also features a curved 3form wall. This wall allows natural light to filter in while providing privacy. The wall also has a marker board finish to allow the brainstorming of ideas between employees.

Penny Mural, Captain America Shield The majority of my friend group has a favorite super hero. One in par cular loves Captain America. For her birthday, I designed a penny mural of the Captain America shield. The background commemorates the “Civil Wars movie which was released around the same me.

This Li le Piggy Late this past September, my mom underwent an intense surgical procedure. To cheer her up, I created this fabric. Since her favorite animals are pigs, I designed a fabric with tea cups pigs. She will be taking the fabric swatch and making a pillow with the fabric as the front panel.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

TMNT I have found that recent graduates do not always think of small necessi es, especially men. When my boyfriend started living in an apartment on his own, he forgot one piece for the bathroom, a toothbrush holder. To go with his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle towels and his blue shower curtains, I designed and created a TMNT themed toothbrush holder, with a blue base to e the finishes together.

Iden fica on Over two year later and this li le guy s ll does not have a name tag. I hope he appreciates this name tag made just for him. Featuring an acrylic top with his name etched in and a blue stained wood base, this dog tag fits his unique style.
