Revered Sastriji leads a strict Brahminical life along with being very open minded & extremely humble. His humility only shows his supreme mastery over astrology. He and Iranganti Rangacharya are considered as the foremost authorities alive today in Jaimini Astrology. Mr Sastri has supported Saptarishis Astrology right from its inception stage.

n the last article that was published in May 2008 Vol.2 issue of Saptarishis Astrology, some different types of Lagnas were studied. A few more to be studied will be considered in their appropriate places. I shall now study the Raja Yoga, Yoga Bhanga (cancellation) effects of Bhavas and the Dasas in the horoscope referred to earlier. In the horoscope, it was found that Saturn is the Yogada planet as he aspects both Lagna and its 7th house. For this planet Saturn and the Lagna, I shall discuss the Argala effects and then study the Yoga and Avayoga (malefic) influences, and then discuss the Dasa effects. Sage Jaimini has defined Argala in five sutras. Somanatha and Krishna Misra have explained these clearly. Argala influences must be studied both for the Lagna and the Seventh house before studying the good and bad points of a horoscope.

In this horoscope, Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Saturn and Ketu are in the second, fourth and eleventh houses from the Lagna and in the anti‐influential houses 12, 10 and 3 respectively to these houses, the Sun occupies only one house that is 3 and the other houses are free from

Therefore the native will enjoy full benefic influence in his life. But, Somanatha and Krishna Mishra have discussed the following evil influences in the horoscope in order to assess the final good effects: 1. Rahu’s position in the 5th house 2. The association of Moon and Rahu 3. The association of Ketu with the Yogada planet Saturn. 4. Saturn, Ketu and Sun occupying trines from Mars and Lord of the Lagna. 225


These are the detracting influences. This native, born in poor family, started his life as an humble clerk and became an influential officer of the same company.

The native was born in a chara rasi (movable sign) with planets in the Argala houses 2, 4 and 11 with no planets in the anti‐influential houses 12, 10 and 3. So, according to Somanatha and Krishna Mishra, the native has full Raja Yoga. As regards Yogada planet Saturn, is in its own house; Jupiter and Venus occupy the fourth house from Saturn; Saturn is in a fixed sign. Therefore Saturn causes Raja Yoga. Saturn is also subjected to some malefic influences. Sun and Mars – malefics—are in trines (5,9) from Saturn. The rule is that malefics in 5th, 9th and 8th houses from any planets cancel its benefic effects. In the final assessment, the native has full Raja Yoga.

Dhana Yoga (Finances): According to Jaimini Sutras

Arudha Lagna for this chart, according to Somanatha is Cancer which has powerful Argala influences as Moon, Rahu, Mars, Jupiter and Venus occupy 2nd, 4th and 11th Rasis from Cancer. The natives has therefore a powerful Dhana Yoga. He suffered from poverty in his youth due to the location of malefics in the Argala houses. Further According to Jyotisha Phala Ratnamala, Chapter 9, slokas 3 and 4, there will be Dhana Yoga if the benefics and malefics alternatively occupy the signs from the Lagna or the Rasi occupied by the Yogada planet. Dasa in which Raja Yogas wil be effective: According to Somanatha, there are forty dasa types. Of couse, eleven are for Raja Yoga horoscopes; five for rich horoscopes and the others for ordinary horoscopes.

The native under consideration is born poor and therefore cannot have Prabhu Yoga. His horoscope must be studied in relation to other six ordinary Dasas. According to Kalpa Latha, horoscopes which do not have Prabhu Yoga, but have Raja Yoga are to be studied by applying the following ordinary six Dasa systems: Nakshatra Bheda, Nakshtraraja Dasa, Nisarga, Chara, Chara Paryaya, Sthira Paryaya and Gochara. Gochara Dasa is otherwise known as Trikona Dasa. The sutra

defines Trikona dasa. Here the fifth sign, Leo, is strong and Leo Dasa becomes the first Dasa. (Copy Editor: There is a mention of Prabhu Yoga in Phalaratnamaala by Krishna Mishra in Lagnabheda Adhyaya (Chapter 10) Jataka Sara Sangraha states: Select the stronger of the two trines for the first dasa. According to the Prakriti Chakra, for Chara rasis (Movable Signs) in the natural order, for 1 Sthira rasis (fixed signs) every sixth rasis , for Dwiswabhava rasis (Dual digns) first angular, then succeedant and finally cadent rasis (Kendra, Panaphara and Apikloma) must be chosen for Trikona Dasa. Now, Leo is a strong Trikona Rasi and is an odd sign. Since it is an odd sign, the sixth rasi in the natural zodiacal order must be chosen for successive dasa.

Work out the dasas in this manner for the whole life. Karakas: Karakas are of five kinds. They are Atmakaraka, Swakaraka, dasa karaka, and Bhava karaka. Atmakaraka is a planet which has travelled the largest number of degrees in a Sign. Dasa karakas are those indicated by the dasas. Nitya (Fixed) Karakas are those given by Parasara – for example‐ Sun as Atmakaraka etc. Chara (Variable) karakas are those determined by the horoscopes individually. (Copy Editor: The above table is the dasa karakas for Aquarius Dasa and similarly for other dasa Rasi can be worked out. The reckoning of subsequent karakas is to be found out using Graha Chakra. In fact, there are 4 types of reckoning in Jaimini system. They are 1. Udaya Chakra, counting zodiacally for all signs 2. Prakriti Chakra, counting zodiacally for odd signs and anti zodiacally or even signs. 3. Vikriti Chakra, counting anti zodiacally for odd signs and zodiacally for even signs 4. Graha Chakra: Graha Chakra reckoning means counting from lord of Dasa rasi (from Atmakaraka in case of Atmakaraka Graha Dasa) in regular zodiacal (Udaya chakra) fashion. So, the Tanu karaka will be the lord of the dasa sign and the subsequent karakas are the planets next to him by Udaya chakra (Zodiacal) fashion. Refer to Jataka Sara Sangraha by Raghava Bhatta or Jaimini Sutramritam by Sri Iranganti Rangacharya for more details of these reckoning. Bhatri Karaka in the above table needs explanation. Rahu and Moon occupy sign Leo, so according to Kalpalatha preference shall be given to the planet that travels less longitude in the sign to determine the karaka. Rahus longitude given by the author is 12°8' so he covered only (30° ‐ 12° 08)= 17° 52˝, where as Moon’s longitude is 29° 50́, so Rahu shall be taken as Bhatri Karaka. This can be understood with Chara Paryaya dasa as the same reckoning will be used for finding respective lords for each dasa. Vyaya Karaka is not the 3rd planet, but the 6th planet in Graha chakra reckoning. Raghava Bhatta specifically mentioned it in Jataka Sara Sangraha. This is very important rider which is often overlooked.) The effects of the Dasas will depend on the relationship between Janma Karakas, Dasa Karakas and the Arudha Rasi and on the nature of the Dwara and Bahya Rasis. Benefic effects are to be predicted if they are benefic and malefic if they are otherwise. The effects of Dasas will be discussed in detail later. Longevity (Somanatha’s Views): There are a number of Dasas for determining longevity. According to Jyotisha Kalpalatha, for all horoscopes consider Brahma, Varnada, Chara and Chara Paryaya dasas for Longevity. The use of other dasas will depend on the nature of horoscopes considered. For all horoscopes, if there is a Brahma planet, fix the dasas in the clockwise order. As regards Varnada Dasa, it will depend on the Hora Lagna and Vilagna. Varnada Rasi is to be determined as follows: 229


Varnada Rasi (Jataka Sara Sangraha) For those born in odd signs, count from Aries to Lagna and Hora Lagna. If both the numbers obtained are either odd or even, add the two numbers. If one of them is odd and the other even, take their difference. Then count from Aries as many signs as are denoted by either of the numbers according to the conditions. The result will be the Varnada Rasi. [Copy Editor: Please note that as explained in the first article in the series, Hora Lagna calculation, here is according to Jataka Sara Sangraha by Raghava Bhatta. The Hora Lagna (HL) shown by JHora shall not be used in this case. This variation of Hora Lagna will be provided in our open source program, and this version of Hora Lagna will be known by the name Savayava Hora Lagna (SHL)] In the horoscope, counts up to Janma Lagna and Hora Lagna are 1 and 7 respectively. Since both are odd, take their sum 1+7 = 8 and count 8 rasis from Aries; thus Scorpio is the Varnada Sign. Determination of the Rasi indicating Death: Consider the most afflicted Varnada dasa sign by malefics or the sign whose trines afflicted by malefics. That Sign brings about death of the native. In the above example, of the three signs, Scorpio, Aries and Cancer, Cancer is the most afflicted. Cancer is aspected by Saturn, Jupiter, Venus and Ketu, and Sun, Moon and Rahu are in 2nd and 12th house. Therefore Cancer Varnada Rasi Dasa will bring the death of the native. Determination of the first Dasa: Choose the stronger of the Lagna and Hora Lagna. In our example, Lagna is Aries and Hora Lagna is Libra. Libra is stronger as there is a planet in it. From Libra, count 8 signs (8 being the number of Varnada Rasi, Scorpio); we get Taurus, for which the dasa period is 12 years. The dasa periods are: 1. Libra 2. Scorpio 3. Sagittarius 4. Capricorn 5. Aquarius 6. Pisces 7. Aries 8. Taurus 9. Gemini 10.Cancer

Jyotish Kalpadrum Prasna Related with Child Birth. (Page 58, Chapter related with child birth Prasna, Jyotish Kalpadrum) 1. When female nativity asks about the child birth, if at that time the Rahu is situated in lagna or Arudha lagna, predict the female is pregnant. Its certain, may be the pregnancy has happened only a day before. 2. If Moon is situated in Lagna with benefic planets, child birth will happen certainly. But if Moon is in 3rd, 5th or 9th house with Sun and Venus child birth will not happen. 3. If Jupiter is situated in Lagna or Arudha or in 5th, 7th house in friendly sign child birth will happen, but if in inimical sign children will die at young age.

In the previous articles, I discussed the various types of Lagnas, the planet causing Raja Yoga, determination of Yogada and Kevala planet. Now, I shall discuss the determination of Argala and different types of Argala for Yogada and Kevala planets. Let us discuss now Argala for a Yogada planet. The Sage Jaimini states in his sutras as follows:

n the last article, Sun was selected as Brahma planet and the longevity was fixed by me in the previous horoscope. Longevity according to Brahma planet does not tally with that according to Varnada dasa. A different dasa system is discussed now to belittle the ambiguity. Something more has to be discussed about Brahma planet, the matter will be considered further in relation to the views of Somanatha and Krishna Mishra. Brahma Planet Calculation According to

prabhu bhāva vairīśaprāṇi pitṛlābhaprāṇyanucaro viṣamastho brahmā (2-1-49),

The strongest of the lords of 6th, 8th, 12th houses occupying the odd sign (Aries for example) behind the strongest of 1 and 7th is Brahma planet. This meaning was given by the recent commentators – Durgaprasada Dwivedi, Sitaram Jha and others and Nilakantha, Krishnanada Swami and others among the older commentators. But, Raghava Bhatta, Krishna Mishra and Somanatha have separated the sutra into parts, taking the later part for defining Brahma. According to them the planet behind (counter clockwise) the stronger of 1 and 7 is Brahma planet. After considering all the authorities, Brihat Parasara Hora, Venkateswara, Nilakantha, Swami and others like Sri Krishna, Kalidasa, I have adopted Raghava Bhatta’s view and fixed Sun as the Brahma planet in this example as per sutra. “The stronger lord of 6th, 8th, and 12th signs from the Lagna or the Seventh will indicate death in its period”. In this chart, 7th is the stronger and Moon the lord of the 12th house is very strong and is in Taurus. Therefore we must consider Rasi dasas up to Taurus.

Bramha – Maheswara Dasa: (Copy Editor: Though the author hasn’t explicitly mentioned the name of the following dasa, it is understood that this dasa is called Bramha – Maheswara Dasa. The maximum longevity will be from the Bramha planet to Maheswara Planet. The calculation of dasa years is from dasa sign to the sign occupied by the lord according to Prakriti Chakra. For example, in this chart, Moon is in Taurus and hence for Cancer sign, the dasa years will be from Cancer to Taurus counting anti zodiacally giving three years. Taurus has 10 years. Virgo antaradasa in Taurus indicates death, because it is occupied by Ketu and aspected by Rahu and happens to be the 8th from the Ascendant; the duration of 9

antaras (from Taurus to Virgo will be 90 months Æ 7 years and 6 months); the total longevity will be 67 years + 7 years and 6 months = 74 years and 6 months. Here, even though the starting dasa is an even sign, the regular zodiacal order must be observed beginning from the sign occupied by Brahma for fixing the dasas; the work has been given in the previous paragraph. Other dasas like Maheswara dasa, Vidhatri dasa, etc. has been mentioned. Due to lack of details, they have not been discussed here. Somanatha suggests reference to a Mula Sasthra by Kalidasa for this purpose. In conclusion it might be suggested that the longevity extends to 72 – 73 years.

Rudra Dasa: Somanatha states in his Kalpalatha that the stronger of the lords of the 8th house from Lagna and the 7th house is strong Rudra (Prani Rudra). The weaker is also Rudra but weak (Aprani Rudra). It will cause trouble to all like the deity Rudra. Start the dasa from the stronger of the two signs – Lagna and the 7th. There are four types of Rudra dasa. Death occurs in the strongest malefic Sign aspected by Rudra planet. Start from the Navamsa sign occupied by the lord of Lagna.

Drekkana dasa: Take the sum (if either are odd or even) of the lords of the Lagna and the 7th sign, or the difference (if the lords of Lagna and the seventh are one odd and the other even) and find the Drekkana. Start the dasa from Drekkana rasi so obtained. (Copy Editor: It appears that the author intends to take the nature of the sign occupied by respective lords and their longitudes) Observe Chara dasa method for this Rudra dasa. Fix death in the dasa of Rudra sign or the Sign aspected by the Rudra planet according as the life is short, medium or long – whichever suits the occasion. Again another method is also considered: It is by taking the trine signs (Trikona signs) for fixing death. This is called Sula Dasa. Fixing the Rudra planet: According to 2 – 1 – 37, the stronger of the lords of the 8th house either from Lagna or its 7th is Rudra planet. Mercury is strong Rudra (Prani Rudra) and Jupiter is weak Rudra (Aprani Rudra). Start dasa from Lagna or its 7th whichever is the first strong (Prathama prani). (Copy Editor: Please note the usage of both of the Rudra planets, the stronger and the weaker. Though the Prani Rudra (stronger Rudra) is important Maraka, Aprani (Weaker) Rudra also is a Maraka planet in this Dasa System. The secret here is the association of benefic planets and malefic planets for Prani and Aprani Rudras respectively, is very important for their marakatwa. It must be understood that the starting sign will be the stronger of the Lagna and 7th house, not the stronger of the respective lords. Now, the author is explaining the rules of strength of signs below.)

Translation: Here after the strength is discussed. The first source of strength is given below. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

First is the association with the Karaka (planet). Choose sign that which has more planets. Then, choose the planet in exaltation. Etc; Then Natural Strength Failing which the strength of respective lords.

The second source of strength is the aspect by the lord, Jupiter and Mercury or their association.. The third source is the lordship. The fourth is from occupation. Somanatha has given details about this, which will be discussed later. Raghava Bhatta states that the first of the four must be used for determining the strength. So Leo sign is stronger. Start dasas from this sign Leo and end with Sign Aries which is aspected by both the Rudra planets. Since Jupiter, Mercury and Venus aspecting Aries are benefics, death will occur in the dasa of the next sign which is either associated with the malefic or aspected by them. Taurus is such a sign. In Taurus Mahadasa, the antaradasa of Capricorn will bring about death, as it is aspected by Mercury and Jupiter, both the Rudra planets and also by the malefic Mars. To the end of antara of Sagittarius, it is 8/12 * 10 years = 6 years and 8 months. Death occurs after the 70 years 8 months. Taking all these points into consideration, Brahma dasa method indicating 72 years may be to be fairly correct.

General guidelines to choose a dasa for a horoscope: To give general life reading, which dasa system is to be used for this chart, is the next problem. There are a number of types of dasas. It is an elaborate affair to discuss all these dasas at length in these articles. I shall now choose only the most suitable of the dasas for consideration. • As there are no planets in the trikona houses (1, 5, 9), Trikona Dasa is ruled out. • For the same reason, Chara Paryaya dasa is ruled out. • Sthira Paryaya dasa may be used by choosing the stronger of Lagna or its 7th. Seventh house Leo is strong on account of its association with 3 planets. • Drig dasa may be applicable if there are planets in the 9th house from which dasa may be studied. This dasa is not to be used for this chart. (Copy Editor: We request all to note down these guidelines for their study of Rasi dasas. Some recent commentators on Jaimini system opine that Trikona, Chara Paryaya and Sthira Paryaya dasas are Ayurdasas. Yet, most ancient commentators clearly state these are very important Sampat dasas. Raghava Bhatta in his Sara Sangraha states that second source of strength (aspect or conjunction of Atmakaraka, Jupiter, and Mercury) must be exclusively used for these Sampat dasas)

Padanaathamsa Dasa: It is the dasa system of Navamsa Chart and starts from the sign occupied by the lord of Arudha Lagna of Rasi Chart. The Arudha Lagna of this native is placed in Leo and its lord Sun occupied Aquarius in Navamsa. Start the dasa from Aquarius and continues till the longevity is covered. Karaka, Arudha and other effects are to be studied in this dasas. We have to allot Dwara and Bahya signs for each Rasi dasa.

Since karaka for father – Sun – is with Rahu, Karaka for the 8th, and occupies Janma (Starting) dasa Rasi, its lord Saturn being debilitated in this period the father of the native will be put to great difficulties; sickness will threaten the whole family. Rajyakaraka is Saturn and is debilitated; he aspects the Sun – Karaka for father – who will be subjected to some indignities. Even though the starting sign is Aquarius (It is to be treated as Lagna), as there are strong benefic planets in the three angles (Kendras), longevity is assured. This method is to be adopted in studying the effects of different dasas. We must study the effects according to Lagna, Yogada, Vilagnadhipathi (Lord of Hora Lagna, Ghatika Lagna etc.) and select the most powerful of these for deciding the results. This is according to Krishna Mishra and others (vide Jyotisha Phala Ratnamala 7-15). In this chart, results are to be studied according to Karaka, Yogada and Arudha Lagna as they are very strong.

Tanu Bhava: Since the Atma Karaka Sun is in the Navamsa of Aquarius, the following effects are to be noted:

AK Sun is placed in Aq and hence the danger from lake etc.) There is danger from water in a lake or a tank; the native will be highly evolved soul and a Vedantic, not in the sense of external profession but as one practicing the doctrine of non – attachment. The results are to be studied with Karakamsa, Drekkana, Chara Karaka and Arudha Lagna also. Arudha Lagna (Leo) is strong because in Leo sign there are many planets. Either in Aquarius or Leo dasa (from 41 to 48 years), the natïve will have danger from beasts. Since Sun is the Atma Karaka and is also the lord of Arudha lagna having conjoined Rahu in Navamsa, the native’s color will be ordinary, he will be of medium height, frank, kind and generous. As Sun and Rahu are in Aquarius and as Saturn is debilitated in Navamsa, the person will have a hot constitution. 313


Dhana Bhava: According to Jaimini, financial prosperity and immense riches, etc; are to be studied with reference to Arudha Lagna and Drekkana. Of Karaka and Arudha Lagna, the latter is stronger. So Dhana yoga must be discussed with reference to Rasi Chakra. As there are planets in the 2nd and 11th houses from the Karaka and the position of Jupiter in the 5th house, there is Dhana Yoga. The presence of Rahu in the 9th house, there is cancellation of Dhana yoga to some extent. The native will experience want of money on some occasions. Jupiter in the 4th house from Arudha Lagna indicates ordinary Dhana yoga. Libra dasa is the dasa when financial prosperity begins since the second and the eleventh houses from Libra have Mars, Jupiter, Moon and Ketu. Since Venus – Rajya karaka for this dasa – is in the 8th house from Libra, the Yoga for money will be ordinary. The dasa runs from 28 to 36 years. Pisces dasa runs from 36 to 41 years, does not indicate financial prosperity. Bahya sign for this dasa is Aries. As Aries is occupied by a debilitated planet which happens to be the 2nd sign from dasa sign and as Dhana Karaka for this dasa viz,. Rahu is in the 12th, financial prosperity during the age 36 to 41 years will be ordinary. Then, Leo Dasa commences, operates from 41 to 46 years. Bahya Sign for this is Aquarius. The Dasa sign also happens to be Arudha Lagna. For this dasa rasi, we should consider only Navamsa positions. Exalted Mercury is in the 2nd, Jupiter and mars are in the 4th, Sun and Rahu are in the 7th, Saturn in the 9th, Venus in the 10th and Moon and Ketu in dasa rasi. Dhana Karaka (for this dasa) is Saturn and he is debilitated and is in a movable sign. Because the 2nd, 4th and 10th are well fortified, considerable financial prosperity is shown in this dasa. As however Saturn a malefic is debilitated in the 9th, there cannot be excess of Bhagya Vriddi (Increase of Wealth). Vyaya Karaka (lord of loss) for this dasa is Mercury and he is in the 2nd exalted. Therefore there will be excess of expenses also. Thus should be divined from other twelve houses.

The Argala is defined by Jaimini as 4th, 2nd, 11th house from any house or its occupant.

Ghatika Lagna (GL) is Scorpio and Hora Lagna is Pisces. (Copy Editor: For determining Chara karaka, the longitude of Rahu to be counted from the end of the sign, therefore (30° - 25° 55́ 40˝ = 04° 4́ 20˝). The Hora lagna given by the author is not getting tallied with our software calculation. This may be because of the Ayanamsa difference. At this point, we want to add one more thing. As explained in the 1st article in this series, Sri Madhura Krishnamurthi Sastri uses the method given in the Jataka Sara Sangraha for the calculation of Hora Lagna. Similarly, for calculation of Ghatika Lagna, the counting of houses should be from Lagna at a rate of one house per Ghatika. Jhora calculates that from Sun, instead of Lagna. Another Scholar Sri Iranganti Rangacharya has endorsed the method of Jataka SaraSangraha and accordingly the same is followed in our software. Madura (Jataka Sarasangraha Method): Hora Lagna: Pisces Ghatika Lagna: Scorpio whereas Jhora (Presume they are following Parasara): Hora Lagna: Virgo & Ghatika Lagna: Gemini) In this chart, the Sun aspects both Janma Lagna and Drekkana Lagan; so Sun is the Yogada planet. Sun aspects Ghatika lagna also. Jaimini Sutras 1-1-5 to 1-1-9 give the rules about Argala and Argala cancellation. Sun has planets in the 2nd and 11th, no planet in the 12th, has Ketu above in the 3rd and no planet in the 4th. So, Sun has therefore ¾ Argala. Since Jupiter (a powerful benefic) is in the 5th house from Sun, it has ¼ Argala. So, Sun has (¼ + ¾) one full Argala. But, if malefic are in the 5th, 8th, 9th houses, so Argala is cancelled. with ž Argala effects, aspects Ghatika Lagna that is occupied by Jupiter, the native has full Raja Yoga. In this horoscope Arudha Lagna is Leo, and Arudha for the 7th house is Gemini which is mutually third and eleventh houses, enhancing the Raja yoga effect. It might be mentioned that this chart has Kemadruma Yoga as the malefic Rahu and Ketu occupy 2nd and 8th houses from Lagna and Arudha Lagna. The effect of Kemadruma is begging. According to Somanatha the effect becomes more malefic if aspected by Moon. But the malefic must be equally balanced in both the houses (2 and 8); otherwise the malefic effects of Kemadruma are cancelled. In this chart there is no balancing of malefic; so Kemadruma does not exist. This rule must be observed for Pada, Karaka and Lagna. All these three must have Kemadruma effect.

In this case, Rahu and Ketu are in 2nd and 8th houses causing slightly malefic effect in the Rasi chart. In the Navamsa chart, 2nd house from Sun is free and exalted Mercury is in the 8th house. In the Drekkana chart, 2nd house from Sun is having the benefic Venus and 8th house is free. It must be remembered that Rasi chart is more powerful than the Drekkana chart in deciding malefic and benefic effects. So the evil effects for Drekkana and Arudha Lagna may be ignored. According to Raghava Bhatta, the association of Saturn with Moon is bad. But in this chart, since Moon is exalted, there are no evil effects.

According to Kalpalatha, as the native is born in a fixed sign Aquarius, the Argala effects are increased. So the ¾ benefic Argala effect for the Sun is as good as full Argala effects causing Raja Yoga. Now and then, there will be difficulties, excess of expenditure on the dependents and servants and for obtaining public recognition. Since Sun is in the 12th house from Arudha lagna, loss of money through government is indicated. The native will aspire more for fame than for wealth. In the Drekkana chart, as 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 signs are occupied respectively by Sun, Rahu, Venus, Mercury and Mars and as Venus aspects Drekkana Lagna, the native will acquire wealth through noble means. In this chart, 7th house is stronger than 1st due to the association of many planets, of which Mars has traveled the maximum degrees in the Rasi – the Seventh house. Mars is the lord of 3rd and 10th houses and so the native will earn money through self-effort. Gemini is the 7th Arudha and the Yogada planet Sun is in the second house from Gemini. The native will become prosperous after marriage. Karaka for marriage – Rahu – is in the second house from Lagna strengthening the previous influence. Since Saturn, the Putra Karaka (PK) and Moon, the Amatya Karaka (AmK) are in the 11th house from Sun, prosperity increases with the birth of children. Since Mars is in a friendly sign in association with Mercury and Venus, since Jupiter is in 9th from Mars (in Drekkana), the native earns his livelihood by his own intelligence and education. Since Jupiter – Karaka for Wealth – is in trine to Sun, the benefic effects for acquisition of wealth become very powerful. The same combination will also be responsible for making the native highly learned conferring a scientific outlook, moral discipline and intellectual acumen. In studying the Bhavas of a chart, Jyotisha Phala Ratnamala 7-15 states that Lagna, Yogada and Vilagna (Ghati and Hora Lagnas) must be studied for assessing the effects of the different houses according to certain Sages. But it is essential that the strongest of these must be taken before arriving at a final conclusion. Again, the Sun (Yogada planet) and Mars (the lord of Ghatika Lagna), are powerful according to the rules of Jaimini. These two planets must be the starting points for studying bhavas in this chart. Sometimes Karakamsa Lagna, Arudha Lagna and Janma Lagna alone have to be considered, which will be considered later. 282


Longevity: In deciding longevity, the following points are to be considered. 1. Lords of Lagna and 8th house 2. Lagna and Moon 3. Lagna and Hora Lagna 4. Ayur Lagna 5. Sapada Ghatika Lagna 6. Longevity from the lords of 9th and 12th Rasi 7. Longevity from the lord of 8th house 8. Longevity from the lord of the 8th house of Karaka and a few more. Determine the Ayurlagna from the most applicable of these and determine the time of death through the dasas of Varnada and Brahma. In this chart, all planets excepting the Nodes and the Sun are in fixed Signs; Lagna is a fixed Sign; we must determine longevity through different methods. 1. Lord of Lagna Saturn is in a fixed sign. Lord of 8th house Jupiter is in a fixed sign; therefore short life. 2. Lagna – fixed sign; Moon – fixed sign Æ short life 3. Lagna – fixed sign; Hora lagna – Dual sign ÆFull life. In this process, two methods give short life. In this chart, Aquarius is the Lagna and the 8th house is Capricorn having Saturn for their joint lordship. In this special case, choose lord of the 8th house from Saturn. Here Jupiter is the planet required and is in the fixed sign. (Copy Editor: It looks author has taken the natural 8th house from the sign occupied by the lord Saturn.) 283


As the Moon is neither in the 1st nor in the 7th house, there is no need to take Lagna and the Moon for finding longevity. For this native Ayurlagna is Aquarius, Sapadaghatika lagna is Scorpio. Aquarius is Dharma Rasi and Scorpio is Artha Rasi, therefore the longevity is short. Commentators like Venkateswara and others want to take Navamsa chart also for consideration. Then the lord of Ayurlagna Saturn is in Aries Navamsa (Movable), lord of 8th house Mars is in Scorpio (Fixed). Therefore, longevity is of medium type. Mars, the lord of Sapadaghatika lagna is in fixed Navamsa and the lord of 8th house Jupiter is in fixed Navamsa. Hence short life indicated. Another Method: According to Jaimini’s text 2-1-23,

िपतृलाभरोगेशूािणकं टकािदेत ैवं िऽधा pitṛlābharogeśaprāṇikaṁṭakādisthesvataścaivaṁ tridhā, The lords of the 8th houses from 1 and 7 are Jupiter and Moon; Moon is strong and in the 4th house, therefore the native is long- lived. It is the practice to consider Karaka in the following manner. Sun is the Karaka; the lords of the 8th house from the Sun and its 7th house are Saturn and the Sun. Since Saturn is strong and is in the 11th house from Karaka, it indicates medium life. (Copy Editor: A very important principle is here indicated by the author. In Parasara system, Sun is 1 considered as Karaka for Body. Yet, in Jaimini, Sun as karaka for Ayurdaya can be deduced from the sutra आयःु िपतृिदन ेशाां āyuḥ pitṛdineśābhyāṁ as upalakshana. )

Drekkana Ayurdaya According to Somanatha, longevity is to be settled by considering the Drekkanas of the Lagna and its 7th house using the rule Chara – Chara, etc. Since the lord of Lagna is in Leo Drekkana and the lord of the 7th house Sun is in Pisces Drekkana according to the dictum sthira dwandwa Chara sthirastha thus long life. Then after applying different processes of longevity determination and eliminating the inappropriate ones, we find that on the basis of the strong disposition of the Sun and Saturn in a common and a fixed sign (in Drekkana chart) respectively, the type of Ayurlagna indicated in the Drekkana chart should be accepted. In the Rasi chart, the Sun is in a movable sign without any association. In the Drekkana he is stronger because a planet joins him. Saturn’s disposition is also stronger in Drekkana. Hence Ayurlagna should be judged from Drekkana chart and a full term, i.e., over 66 years is denoted.

Brahma Planet: It is not easy to decide the Brahma Planet. According to Krishna Mishra, if there are no planets in the odd signs behind the strongest of the Signs – Lagna and its 7th – choose the planet in the even signs to select Brahma planet. In our example, Sun is behind the seventh house and therefore the Brahma plane. There are a number of types of Dasas based on this Brahma planet and let us choose Sthira Dasa among them for consideration. In this Sthira dasa, the third part (khanda) indicates death. Brahma planet is Sun and start Sthira dasa from Cancer, occupied by Sun, the Brahma planet. 1st part is of Cancer, Leo, Virgo and Libra. 2nd part is Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius. 3rd part is Pisces, Aries, Taurus and Gemini. The dasa years are 7, 8, and 9 for movable, fixed and dual signs respectively according to Jaimini sutra 2-3-35. Now, the most afflicted Sign in the third part must be decided to fix the death inflicting dasa. The aphorism

ु पपमे पाप कोनिे रपरोगयोः पापेवा papamadhye pāpa koneripurogayoḥ pāpevā decides the most afflicted Sign in a chart. If a sign is between malefic or has malefic in Trines, or 8th and 12th houses, is the most afflicted. According to this rule, Aries is the most afflicted – more afflicted than Gemini. Aries dasa is for 7 years after the 72 year. Sutra 2-1-38 decides the Antaradasa for death. The Navamsa rasi – Aries- is aspected by Mars, the lord of 8th house. Therefore Aries antaradasa in Aries dasa brings about death. This means 77 years and 7 months. Varnada Dasa: This also decides the period of death. Janma Lagna Aquarius is odd and Hora lagna Pisces is even. Aquarius is 11th and Hora lagna is the 12th of the natural zodiac. The most malefic of the trines from Varnada sign ends the life. Leo is most afflicted. Start from Hora Lagna which is stronger than Lagna as it is dual and is associated with planets and note down the dasa years for each Sign according to Prakriti Chakra, till Leo dasa is reached. 285

Here, in this chart, since HL and Lagna are of different nature, so their difference (12 - 11 = 1) will be the Varnada number. Since, it is one in this case; counting one sign from dasa rasi gives same rasi. Yet, in this article the author used (Count minus 1) as dasa years, whereas in the previous article published in Feb 2009 Vol 5 Saptarishis Astrology he used Count (As it is) as dasa years. If earlier method is followed, then we get 67 as dasa years as total, instead of 59 years.) As regards Ayurdaya – Longevity – Parasara methods determine it easily as full or long since the lords of Lagna, 8th and 10th houses are strong and since the benefics and lord of Lagna are in Kendras. But, Parasara method is not so definite in many cases for which intelligent methods have to be devised for fixing longevity.

In Sarvagna Bhushana, a powerful benefic in the 10th house inclines one to look at the various positions from the spiritual angle and realize the worthlessness and instability of the various things and enjoyments on the earthly planet and develops a renouncing spirit which is called Gnana. One of the oldest authorities on Jaimini Astrology, he graced the Astrological Magazine in 1960s under immense persuasion of Late Dr Raman and gave us some rare jewels in Jaimini Astrology. At the age of 80, he lives in a small town in Andhra Pradesh. Incidentally not many in India & West know that Andhra Pradesh has been the land of Jaimini Astrology after Banaras. Revered Sastriji leads a strict Brahminical life along with being very open minded & extremely humble. His humility only shows his supreme mastery over astrology. In the previous articles, I discussed the various types of Lagnas, the planet causing Raja Yoga, determination of Yogada and Kevala planet. Now, I shall discuss the determination of Argala and different types of Argala for Yogada and Kevala planets. Let us discuss now Argala for a Yogada planet. The Sage Jaimini states in his sutras as follows:

If this planets aspects Lagna, Hora Lagna and Ghatika Lagnas, it will cause powerful Raja Yoga. This planet is called Drashta or Nidhyata. The Argala is defined by Jaimini as 4th, 2nd, 11th house from any house or its occupant.

In this Drekkana chart Parivritti Trayapaksha method is followed. That is Drekkanas are assigned continuously for the twelve signs from Aries; the first three Drekkanas of Aries will be allotted to Aries, Taurus, and Gemini; the three Drekkanas of Taurus will be for the next three signs and so on.

Ghatika Lagna (GL) is Scorpio and Hora Lagna is Pisces. (Copy Editor: For determining Chara karaka, the longitude of Rahu to be counted from the end of the sign, therefore (30° - 25° 55́ 40˝ = 04° 4́ 20˝). The Hora lagna given by the author is not getting tallied with our software calculation. This may be because of the Ayanamsa difference. At this point, we want to add one more thing. As explained in the 1st article in this series, Sri Madhura Krishnamurthi Sastri uses the method given in the Jataka Sara Sangraha for the calculation of Hora Lagna. Similarly, for calculation of Ghatika Lagna, the counting of houses should be from Lagna at a rate of one house per Ghatika. Jhora calculates that from Sun, instead of Lagna. Another Scholar Sri Iranganti Rangacharya has endorsed the method of Jataka SaraSangraha and accordingly the same is followed in our software. Madura (Jataka Sarasangraha Method): Hora Lagna: Pisces Ghatika Lagna: Scorpio whereas Jhora (Presume they are following Parasara): Hora Lagna: Virgo & Ghatika Lagna: Gemini) In this chart, the Sun aspects both Janma Lagna and Drekkana Lagan; so Sun is the Yogada planet. Sun aspects Ghatika lagna also. Jaimini Sutras 1-1-5 to 1-1-9 give the rules about Argala and Argala cancellation. Sun has planets in the 2nd and 11th, no planet in the 12th, has Ketu above in the 3rd and no planet in the 4th. So, Sun has therefore ¾ Argala. Since Jupiter (a powerful benefic) is in the 5th house from Sun, it has ¼ Argala. So, Sun has (¼ + ¾) one full Argala. But, if malefic are in the 5th, 8th, 9th houses, so Argala is cancelled. Since Sun 280


with ž Argala effects, aspects Ghatika Lagna that is occupied by Jupiter, the native has full Raja Yoga. In this horoscope Arudha Lagna is Leo, and Arudha for the 7th house is Gemini which is mutually third and eleventh houses, enhancing the Raja yoga effect. It might be mentioned that this chart has Kemadruma Yoga as the malefic Rahu and Ketu occupy 2nd and 8th houses from Lagna and Arudha Lagna. The effect of Kemadruma is begging. According to Somanatha the effect becomes more malefic if aspected by Moon. But the malefic must be equally balanced in both the houses (2 and 8); otherwise the malefic effects of Kemadruma are cancelled. In this chart there is no balancing of malefic; so Kemadruma does not exist. This rule must be observed for Pada, Karaka and Lagna. All these three must have Kemadruma effect.

In this case, Rahu and Ketu are in 2nd and 8th houses causing slightly malefic effect in the Rasi chart. In the Navamsa chart, 2nd house from Sun is free and exalted Mercury is in the 8th house. In the Drekkana chart, 2nd house from Sun is having the benefic Venus and 8th house is free. It must be remembered that Rasi chart is more powerful than the Drekkana chart in deciding malefic and benefic effects. So the evil effects for Drekkana and Arudha Lagna may be ignored. According to Raghava Bhatta, the association of Saturn with Moon is bad. But in this chart, since Moon is exalted, there are no evil effects.

According to Kalpalatha, as the native is born in a fixed sign Aquarius, the Argala effects are increased. So the ¾ benefic Argala effect for the Sun is as good as full Argala effects causing Raja Yoga. Now and then, there will be difficulties, excess of expenditure on the dependents and servants and for obtaining public recognition. Since Sun is in the 12th house from Arudha lagna, loss of money through government is indicated. The native will aspire more for fame than for wealth. In the Drekkana chart, as 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 signs are occupied respectively by Sun, Rahu, Venus, Mercury and Mars and as Venus aspects Drekkana Lagna, the native will acquire wealth through noble means. In this chart, 7th house is stronger than 1st due to the association of many planets, of which Mars has traveled the maximum degrees in the Rasi – the Seventh house. Mars is the lord of 3rd and 10th houses and so the native will earn money through self-effort. Gemini is the 7th Arudha and the Yogada planet Sun is in the second house from Gemini. The native will become prosperous after marriage. Karaka for marriage – Rahu – is in the second house from Lagna strengthening the previous influence. Since Saturn, the Putra Karaka (PK) and Moon, the Amatya Karaka (AmK) are in the 11th house from Sun, prosperity increases with the birth of children. Since Mars is in a friendly sign in association with Mercury and Venus, since Jupiter is in 9th from Mars (in Drekkana), the native earns his livelihood by his own intelligence and education. Since Jupiter – Karaka for Wealth – is in trine to Sun, the benefic effects for acquisition of wealth become very powerful. The same combination will also be responsible for making the native highly learned conferring a scientific outlook, moral discipline and intellectual acumen. In studying the Bhavas of a chart, Jyotisha Phala Ratnamala 7-15 states that Lagna, Yogada and Vilagna (Ghati and Hora Lagnas) must be studied for assessing the effects of the different houses according to certain Sages. But it is essential that the strongest of these must be taken before arriving at a final conclusion. Again, the Sun (Yogada planet) and Mars (the lord of Ghatika Lagna), are powerful according to the rules of Jaimini. These two planets must be the starting points for studying bhavas in this chart. Sometimes Karakamsa Lagna, Arudha Lagna and Janma Lagna alone have to be considered, which will be considered later. 282


Longevity: In deciding longevity, the following points are to be considered. 1. Lords of Lagna and 8th house 2. Lagna and Moon 3. Lagna and Hora Lagna 4. Ayur Lagna 5. Sapada Ghatika Lagna 6. Longevity from the lords of 9th and 12th Rasi 7. Longevity from the lord of 8th house 8. Longevity from the lord of the 8th house of Karaka and a few more. Determine the Ayurlagna from the most applicable of these and determine the time of death through the dasas of Varnada and Brahma. In this chart, all planets excepting the Nodes and the Sun are in fixed Signs; Lagna is a fixed Sign; we must determine longevity through different methods. 1. Lord of Lagna Saturn is in a fixed sign. Lord of 8th house Jupiter is in a fixed sign; therefore short life. 2. Lagna – fixed sign; Moon – fixed sign Æ short life 3. Lagna – fixed sign; Hora lagna – Dual sign ÆFull life. In this process, two methods give short life. In determining 8th house lord, the following rule of an ancient work is to be remembered: Sign Taurus Leo Scorpio Aquarius

In this chart, Aquarius is the Lagna and the 8th house is Capricorn having Saturn for their joint lordship. In this special case, choose lord of the 8th house from Saturn. Here Jupiter is the planet required and is in the fixed sign. (Copy Editor: It looks author has taken the natural 8th house from the sign occupied by the lord Saturn.) 283


As the Moon is neither in the 1st nor in the 7th house, there is no need to take Lagna and the Moon for finding longevity. For this native Ayurlagna is Aquarius, Sapadaghatika lagna is Scorpio. Aquarius is Dharma Rasi and Scorpio is Artha Rasi, therefore the longevity is short. Commentators like Venkateswara and others want to take Navamsa chart also for consideration. Then the lord of Ayurlagna Saturn is in Aries Navamsa (Movable), lord of 8th house Mars is in Scorpio (Fixed). Therefore, longevity is of medium type. Mars, the lord of Sapadaghatika lagna is in fixed Navamsa and the lord of 8th house Jupiter is in fixed Navamsa. Hence short life indicated. Another Method: According to Jaimini’s text 2-1-23,

िपतृलाभरोगेशूािणकं टकािदेत ैवं िऽधा pitṛlābharogeśaprāṇikaṁṭakādisthesvataścaivaṁ tridhā, The lords of the 8th houses from 1 and 7 are Jupiter and Moon; Moon is strong and in the 4th house, therefore the native is long- lived. It is the practice to consider Karaka in the following manner. Sun is the Karaka; the lords of the 8th house from the Sun and its 7th house are Saturn and the Sun. Since Saturn is strong and is in the 11th house from Karaka, it indicates medium life. (Copy Editor: A very important principle is here indicated by the author. In Parasara system, Sun is 1 considered as Karaka for Body. Yet, in Jaimini, Sun as karaka for Ayurdaya can be deduced from the sutra आयःु िपतृिदन ेशाां āyuḥ pitṛdineśābhyāṁ as upalakshana. )

Drekkana Ayurdaya According to Somanatha, longevity is to be settled by considering the Drekkanas of the Lagna and its 7th house using the rule Chara – Chara, etc. Since the lord of Lagna is in Leo Drekkana and the lord of the 7th house Sun is in Pisces Drekkana according to the dictum sthira dwandwa Chara sthirastha thus long life. Then after applying different processes of longevity determination and eliminating the inappropriate ones, we find that on the basis of the strong disposition of the Sun and Saturn in a common and a fixed sign (in Drekkana chart) respectively, the type of Ayurlagna indicated in the Drekkana chart should be accepted. In the Rasi chart, the Sun is in a movable sign without any association. In the Drekkana he is stronger because a planet joins him. Saturn’s disposition is also stronger in Drekkana. Hence Ayurlagna should be judged from Drekkana chart and a full term, i.e., over 66 years is denoted.

Brahma Planet: It is not easy to decide the Brahma Planet. According to Krishna Mishra, if there are no planets in the odd signs behind the strongest of the Signs – Lagna and its 7th – choose the planet in the even signs to select Brahma planet. In our example, Sun is behind the seventh house and therefore the Brahma plane. There are a number of types of Dasas based on this Brahma planet and let us choose Sthira Dasa among them for consideration. In this Sthira dasa, the third part (khanda) indicates death. Brahma planet is Sun and start Sthira dasa from Cancer, occupied by Sun, the Brahma planet. 1st part is of Cancer, Leo, Virgo and Libra. 2nd part is Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius. 3rd part is Pisces, Aries, Taurus and Gemini. The dasa years are 7, 8, and 9 for movable, fixed and dual signs respectively according to Jaimini sutra 2-3-35. Now, the most afflicted Sign in the third part must be decided to fix the death inflicting dasa. The aphorism

ु पपमे पाप कोनिे रपरोगयोः पापेवा papamadhye pāpa koneripurogayoḥ pāpevā decides the most afflicted Sign in a chart. If a sign is between malefic or has malefic in Trines, or 8th and 12th houses, is the most afflicted. According to this rule, Aries is the most afflicted – more afflicted than Gemini. Aries dasa is for 7 years after the 72 year. Sutra 2-1-38 decides the Antaradasa for death. The Navamsa rasi – Aries- is aspected by Mars, the lord of 8th house. Therefore Aries antaradasa in Aries dasa brings about death. This means 77 years and 7 months. Varnada Dasa: This also decides the period of death. Janma Lagna Aquarius is odd and Hora lagna Pisces is even. Aquarius is 11th and Hora lagna is the 12th of the natural zodiac. The most malefic of the trines from Varnada sign ends the life. Leo is most afflicted. Start from Hora Lagna which is stronger than Lagna as it is dual and is associated with planets and note down the dasa years for each Sign according to Prakriti Chakra, till Leo dasa is reached. 285

Here, in this chart, since HL and Lagna are of different nature, so their difference (12 - 11 = 1) will be the Varnada number. Since, it is one in this case; counting one sign from dasa rasi gives same rasi. Yet, in this article the author used (Count minus 1) as dasa years, whereas in the previous article published in Feb 2009 Vol 5 Saptarishis Astrology he used Count (As it is) as dasa years. If earlier method is followed, then we get 67 as dasa years as total, instead of 59 years.) As regards Ayurdaya – Longevity – Parasara methods determine it easily as full or long since the lords of Lagna, 8th and 10th houses are strong and since the benefics and lord of Lagna are in Kendras. But, Parasara method is not so definite in many cases for which intelligent methods have to be devised for fixing longevity.

In Sarvagna Bhushana, a powerful benefic in the 10th house inclines one to look at the various positions from the spiritual angle and realize the worthlessness and instability of the various things and enjoyments on the earthly planet and develops a renouncing spirit which is called Gnana. Malefics in the 10th house makes on look from a materialistic angle. Benefic in the house when powerful (positional strength, varga strength and Avasta strength) leads one to higher thinking.

Brahma Planet Calculation According to

The strongest of the lords of 6th, 8th, 12th houses occupying the odd sign (Aries for example) behind the strongest of 1 and 7th is Brahma planet. This meaning was given by the recent commentators – Durgaprasada Dwivedi, Sitaram Jha and others and Nilakantha, Krishnanada Swami and others among the older commentators. But, Raghava Bhatta, Krishna Mishra and Somanatha have separated the sutra into parts, taking the later part for defining Brahma. According to them the planet behind (counter clockwise) the stronger of 1 and 7 is Brahma planet. After considering all the authorities, Brihat Parasara Hora, Venkateswara, Nilakantha, Swami and others like Sri Krishna, Kalidasa, I have adopted Raghava Bhatta’s view and fixed Sun as the Brahma planet in this example as per sutra. “The stronger lord of 6th, 8th, and 12th signs from the Lagna or the Seventh will indicate death in its period”. In this chart, 7th is the stronger and Moon the lord of the 12th house is very strong and is in Taurus. Therefore we must consider Rasi dasas up to Taurus.

Bramha – Maheswara Dasa: (Copy Editor: Though the author hasn’t explicitly mentioned the name of the following dasa, it is understood that this dasa is called Bramha – Maheswara Dasa. The maximum longevity will be from the Bramha planet to Maheswara Planet. The calculation of dasa years is from dasa sign to the sign occupied by the lord according to Prakriti Chakra. For example, in this chart, Moon is in Taurus and hence for Cancer sign, the dasa years will be from Cancer to Taurus counting anti zodiacally giving three years. Taurus has 10 years. Virgo antaradasa in Taurus indicates death, because it is occupied by Ketu and aspected by Rahu and happens to be the 8th from the Ascendant; the duration of 9

antaras (from Taurus to Virgo will be 90 months Æ 7 years and 6 months); the total longevity will be 67 years + 7 years and 6 months = 74 years and 6 months. Here, even though the starting dasa is an even sign, the regular zodiacal order must be observed beginning from the sign occupied by Brahma for fixing the dasas; the work has been given in the previous paragraph. Other dasas like Maheswara dasa, Vidhatri dasa, etc. has been mentioned. Due to lack of details, they have not been discussed here. Somanatha suggests reference to a Mula Sasthra by Kalidasa for this purpose. In conclusion it might be suggested that the longevity extends to 72 – 73 years.

Rudra Dasa: Somanatha states in his Kalpalatha that the stronger of the lords of the 8th house from Lagna and the 7th house is strong Rudra (Prani Rudra). The weaker is also Rudra but weak (Aprani Rudra). It will cause trouble to all like the deity Rudra. Start the dasa from the stronger of the two signs – Lagna and the 7th. There are four types of Rudra dasa. Death occurs in the strongest malefic Sign aspected by Rudra planet. Start from the Navamsa sign occupied by the lord of Lagna.

Drekkana dasa: Take the sum (if either are odd or even) of the lords of the Lagna and the 7th sign, or the difference (if the lords of Lagna and the seventh are one odd and the other even) and find the Drekkana. Start the dasa from Drekkana rasi so obtained. (Copy Editor: It appears that the author intends to take the nature of the sign occupied by respective lords and their longitudes) Observe Chara dasa method for this Rudra dasa. Fix death in the dasa of Rudra sign or the Sign aspected by the Rudra planet according as the life is short, medium or long – whichever suits the occasion. Again another method is also considered: It is by taking the trine signs (Trikona signs) for fixing death. This is called Sula Dasa. Fixing the Rudra planet: According to 2 – 1 – 37, the stronger of the lords of the 8th house either from Lagna or its 7th is Rudra planet. Mercury is strong Rudra (Prani Rudra) and Jupiter is weak Rudra (Aprani Rudra). Start dasa from Lagna or its 7th whichever is the first strong (Prathama prani). (Copy Editor: Please note the usage of both of the Rudra planets, the stronger and the weaker. Though the Prani Rudra (stronger Rudra) is important Maraka, Aprani (Weaker) Rudra also is a Maraka planet in this Dasa System. The secret here is the association of benefic planets and malefic planets for Prani and Aprani Rudras respectively, is very important for their marakatwa. It must be understood that the starting sign will be the stronger of the Lagna and 7th house, not the stronger of the respective lords. Now, the author is explaining the rules of strength of signs below.)

First is the association with the Karaka (planet). Choose sign that which has more planets. Then, choose the planet in exaltation. Etc; Then Natural Strength Failing which the strength of respective lords.

The second source of strength is the aspect by the lord, Jupiter and Mercury or their association.. The third source is the lordship. The fourth is from occupation. Somanatha has given details about this, which will be discussed later. Raghava Bhatta states that the first of the four must be used for determining the strength. So Leo sign is stronger. Start dasas from this sign Leo and end with Sign Aries which is aspected by both the Rudra planets. Since Jupiter, Mercury and Venus aspecting Aries are benefics, death will occur in the dasa of the next sign which is either associated with the malefic or aspected by them. Taurus is such a sign. In Taurus Mahadasa, the antaradasa of Capricorn will bring about death, as it is aspected by Mercury and Jupiter, both the Rudra planets and also by the malefic Mars. To the end of antara of Sagittarius, it is 8/12 * 10 years = 6 years and 8 months. Death occurs after the 70 years 8 months. Taking all these points into consideration, Brahma dasa method indicating 72 years may be to be fairly correct.

General guidelines to choose a dasa for a horoscope: To give general life reading, which dasa system is to be used for this chart, is the next problem. There are a number of types of dasas. It is an elaborate affair to discuss all these dasas at length in these articles. I shall now choose only the most suitable of the dasas for consideration. • As there are no planets in the trikona houses (1, 5, 9), Trikona Dasa is ruled out. • For the same reason, Chara Paryaya dasa is ruled out. • Sthira Paryaya dasa may be used by choosing the stronger of Lagna or its 7th. Seventh house Leo is strong on account of its association with 3 planets. • Drig dasa may be applicable if there are planets in the 9th house from which dasa may be studied. This dasa is not to be used for this chart. (Copy Editor: We request all to note down these guidelines for their study of Rasi dasas. Some recent commentators on Jaimini system opine that Trikona, Chara Paryaya and Sthira Paryaya dasas are Ayurdasas. Yet, most ancient commentators clearly state these are very important Sampat dasas. Raghava Bhatta in his Sara Sangraha states that second source of strength (aspect or conjunction of Atmakaraka, Jupiter, and Mercury) must be exclusively used for these Sampat dasas)

Padanaathamsa Dasa: It is the dasa system of Navamsa Chart and starts from the sign occupied by the lord of Arudha Lagna of Rasi Chart. The Arudha Lagna of this native is placed in Leo and its lord Sun occupied Aquarius in Navamsa. Start the dasa from Aquarius and continues till the longevity is covered. Karaka, Arudha and other effects are to be studied in this dasas. We have to allot Dwara and Bahya signs for each Rasi dasa.

Dwara sign is the dasa sign itself and Bahya sign is the sign obtained by counting as many signs as the dasa sign is from the starting sign. This Padanadhamsa dasa is essentially of a dasa 1 in Navamsa chart, so the dasa years must be calculated from dasa sign to its lord using Prakriti Chakra in Navamsa chart only. Here standard deduction of one year is not used. It is very surprising that the author has taken one year as the dasa years for the sign occupied by its lord. See, for example, dasa years for Taurus and Virgo in the above table.) For this native, Aquarius dasa is in operation at birth. It is aspected by Saturn and associated with the malefic Sun and Rahu. Its 7th house is associated with Ketu and waning Moon. Therefore this dasa indicates sickness. Dwara and Bahya signs are Aquarius for this dasa and as it is under the influence of malefic, severe sickness is indicated. All the twelve bhavas can be studied easily for this dasa using the Navamsa chart. Since karaka for father – Sun – is with Rahu, Karaka for the 8th, and occupies Janma (Starting) dasa Rasi, its lord Saturn being debilitated in this period the father of the native will be put to great difficulties; sickness will threaten the whole family. Rajyakaraka is Saturn and is debilitated; he aspects the Sun – Karaka for father – who will be subjected to some indignities. Even though the starting sign is Aquarius (It is to be treated as Lagna), as there are strong benefic planets in the three angles (Kendras), longevity is assured. This method is to be adopted in studying the effects of different dasas. We must study the effects according to Lagna, Yogada, Vilagnadhipathi (Lord of Hora Lagna, Ghatika Lagna etc.) and select the most powerful of these for deciding the results. This is according to Krishna Mishra and others (vide Jyotisha Phala Ratnamala 7-15). In this chart, results are to be studied according to Karaka, Yogada and Arudha Lagna as they are very strong.

Tanu Bhava: Since the Atma Karaka Sun is in the Navamsa of Aquarius, the following effects are to be noted:

तटाकादयो धम taṭākādayo dharme

उेधमर् िनता कै वं च uccedharma nityatā kaivalyaṁ ca

AK Sun is placed in Aq and hence the danger from lake etc.) There is danger from water in a lake or a tank; the native will be highly evolved soul and a Vedantic, not in the sense of external profession but as one practicing the doctrine of non – attachment. The results are to be studied with Karakamsa, Drekkana, Chara Karaka and Arudha Lagna also. Arudha Lagna (Leo) is strong because in Leo sign there are many planets. Either in Aquarius or Leo dasa (from 41 to 48 years), the natïve will have danger from beasts. Since Sun is the Atma Karaka and is also the lord of Arudha lagna having conjoined Rahu in Navamsa, the native’s color will be ordinary, he will be of medium height, frank, kind and generous. As Sun and Rahu are in Aquarius and as Saturn is debilitated in Navamsa, the person will have a hot constitution. 313


Dhana Bhava: According to Jaimini, financial prosperity and immense riches, etc; are to be studied with reference to Arudha Lagna and Drekkana. Of Karaka and Arudha Lagna, the latter is stronger. So Dhana yoga must be discussed with reference to Rasi Chakra. As there are planets in the 2nd and 11th houses from the Karaka and the position of Jupiter in the 5th house, there is Dhana Yoga. The presence of Rahu in the 9th house, there is cancellation of Dhana yoga to some extent. The native will experience want of money on some occasions. Jupiter in the 4th house from Arudha Lagna indicates ordinary Dhana yoga. Libra dasa is the dasa when financial prosperity begins since the second and the eleventh houses from Libra have Mars, Jupiter, Moon and Ketu. Since Venus – Rajya karaka for this dasa – is in the 8th house from Libra, the Yoga for money will be ordinary. The dasa runs from 28 to 36 years. Pisces dasa runs from 36 to 41 years, does not indicate financial prosperity. Bahya sign for this dasa is Aries. As Aries is occupied by a debilitated planet which happens to be the 2nd sign from dasa sign and as Dhana Karaka for this dasa viz,. Rahu is in the 12th, financial prosperity during the age 36 to 41 years will be ordinary. Then, Leo Dasa commences, operates from 41 to 46 years. Bahya Sign for this is Aquarius. The Dasa sign also happens to be Arudha Lagna. For this dasa rasi, we should consider only Navamsa positions. Exalted Mercury is in the 2nd, Jupiter and mars are in the 4th, Sun and Rahu are in the 7th, Saturn in the 9th, Venus in the 10th and Moon and Ketu in dasa rasi. Dhana Karaka (for this dasa) is Saturn and he is debilitated and is in a movable sign. Because the 2nd, 4th and 10th are well fortified, considerable financial prosperity is shown in this dasa. As however Saturn a malefic is debilitated in the 9th, there cannot be excess of Bhagya Vriddi (Increase of Wealth). Vyaya Karaka (lord of loss) for this dasa is Mercury and he is in the 2nd exalted. Therefore there will be excess of expenses also. Thus should be divined from other twelve houses.
