Pierre Lamielle’s first car was a 2002 Golf TDI he named Toro Rojo. Beyond his talented work as an award-winning illustrator, Pierre also attended the French Culinary Institute in New York City. Coming clean VW dispels diesel myths online

Okay, it’s 8:43 a.m. Time to get something in the can—a carryover term from the days when film was king. Today it’s all digital, but it can still look like film. “I’m after heightened reality,” says Tardio. “I want it to feel real—like a film that a real Volkswagen enthusiast would go out and make. It’s their film on steroids, basically.” So, it’s a little “loose” in look. The camera wobbles when the actors exchange words, as if an amateur is at the helm. “The audience should relate to them and think, ‘If this was me, this is the film I’d make,’” says Tardio. “You want the actors to be funny and you want them to feel real. The audience should feel like they helped make this film.”

World Car of the Year The Volkswagen Golf was honored as the 2009 World Car of the Year. A jury of 59 international automotive journalists from 25 countries around the world chose this year’s World Car of the Year. The announcement, which was made at this year’s New York International Auto Show, comes at the introduction of the sixth-generation, all-new 2010 Volkswagen Golf (see page 48), arriving in dealerships this fall. “It is a tremendous honor for Volkswagen to have its global bestselling model, the Golf, named the 2009 World Car of the Year,” said Stefan Jacoby, President/CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. More than 26 million Golf models in 120 countries have been sold, making it one of the top-selling vehicles of all time.

Ward’s Automotive Group has honored the Volkswagen CC with one of the 2009 Ward’s Interior of the Year awards. According to Ward’s, the eleven winners who were recognized this year all had two key elements in common: great looks and great value. “There are certain aspects we look at closely in the Interior of the Year competition, and value is just as important to us as fit-and-finish, styling, comfort and safety,” says Drew Winter, editor in chief of Ward’s AutoWorld magazine. The Volkswagen CC was recognized in the popular-priced car category and is described by Ward’s as having “a beautifully executed interior.”

If the term “green car” automatically conjures up an image of a hybrid vehicle, you should know there’s another option that’s quickly growing in popularity. Today, “green” in automotive terms also includes clean diesel. In fact, the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI clean diesel was recently named the 2009 Green Car of the Year by Green Car Journal®, which evaluated a wide range of potential contenders, including several hybrids. The judges sought the car that offered the most significant achievement in environmental performance. In the end, they rated the Jetta the best of the best. Why Jetta and clean diesel? Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal, explains, “Hybrids have dominated the discussion of environmentally positive vehicles in recent years. The highly fuelefficient Jetta TDI shows that advanced clean diesel has arrived and is poised to change this dynamic. With its affordable price point, refined ride and handling, and high fuel economy, the Jetta TDI shows that hybrids now have a strong competitor in the marketplace.” The Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen break new ground for clean diesel by meeting emissions standards in all 50 states, including California (the most

stringent)—all without the use of additives or extraordinary measures. The Jetta TDI also achieves an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 30 city/41 highway mpg (manual transmission, your mileage may vary). Ah, I see. So the only reason VW Motorsport finished first and second is because of diesel. What do you mean? Well, because diesel is so dirty and sooty, the cars behind you probably couldn’t see anything. So they couldn’t drive fast enough to keep up. No, not exactly. And, even if they could keep up, they probably didn’t want to. Max, those are myths about diesel that just aren’t true any more. VW is revolutionizing clean diesel technology. TDI® clean diesel technology from VW isn’t dirty or sooty, and it’s certainly not loud, smelly or slow. Diesel has come a long way since the days you’re thinking of, and it’s thanks in large part to Volkswagen. How so? I was in Europe a couple of years ago, and had a chance to drive one of the Polo Cup cars there. After just 30 minutes, I was hooked. I was convinced we needed to do something like this in the States. I told Clark [Campbell, Volkswagen of America’s motorsports manager] that we need to do this. To Clark’s amazing credit, he also saw the potential and value in something like this, and he just ran with it. He hasn’t looked back, and the results speak for themselves. Volkswagen goes carbon-less In September 2007, Volkswagen launched the Carbon Neutral Project, a partnership with Carbonfund.org designed to address the issue of carbon emissions in global warming. Under the groundbreaking program, Volkswagen paid for one year of carbon offsets for each new vehicle sold through the end of 2008, thereby reducing VW owners’ carbon “footprint.” The project allowed Volkswagen to offset the cars’ carbon emissions by planting a variety of native trees in an area that became known as the VW Forest in Louisiana’s Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge. Road trip tips Warm weather has arrived and the road is calling. Check out these road trip tips before your tires hit the pavement.

Games, food, balloons, excited kids, tired parents, tons of goodwill…and Volkswagen Routan models. They all ruled the evening at Toth Elementary School’s yearly carnival this past spring. But how does the Routan fit into this scene? It’s part of an ongoing Volkswagen program, VW School Fundraiser, benefiting elementary schools throughout the United States. The Routan event at Toth Elementary, located in Perrysburg, Ohio, coincided with the school’s Relay for Life Carnival. Inside, the school was alive with carnival activities; outside, Volkswagen Routan models and other Volkswagen vehicles were in constant motion as teachers, parents and grandparents took test-drives, earning the school $5 per test-drive, compliments of Volkswagen. The school also received $50 up front for hosting the VW School Fundraiser event.

Over the past 34 years since the Golf, formerly called the Rabbit in North America, first went on sale in the U.S., more than 1.8 million units have been sold in the U.S. It’s a simple science—give the people what they want, and then some. Through it all, the basis for the Golf’s appeal has remained essentially intact—three-or five-door sporty hatchback, cavernous cargo capacity, German-engineered road manners and its surprisingly thrifty and affordable price point.

One thing, however, that you won’t notice unless prompted is noise. When the first prototype is crashed, safety engineers pay special attention to the deformation performance of the exterior and the behavior of the crash dummies in the interior. It’s all about striking a balance between energy dissipation and absorption. Most important is a stiff safety cage which protects the occupants from harmful intrusions. Seat belts and airbags** help protect the occupants within this safety cage. Volkswagen also offers standard Electronic Stability Program (ESP) on all 2009 models.

With barely enough time to form a thought in his head, his Passat Wagon was struck, and he found himself upside down. After quickly processing what had happened, Derek asked his kids if they were OK and was immensely relieved to hear their response, “We’re fine, Dad.” The Passat Wagon ended up on its roof, facing the opposite direction from where the family was originally headed, and onlookers helped the family out of the vehicle. Amazingly, Derek; his daughter, Brynn, nine years old; and his son Ian, six years old, had only minor bruises from the accident. “I think I’ve hurt myself worse sliding into second base during a softball game,” Derek says. “I bought the Passat Wagon because I wanted my wife and kids to be safe.” In the end, it helped keep him and his children safe on this particular Friday evening. * All accidents are not the same, and your results may be different. A tough cell? Not for Volkswagen— Hydrogen fuel-cell technology is road-ready In the interest of innovation and improved air quality, Volkswagen scientists and engineers develop the inevitable replacement to the internal-combustion engine. Even though one of the best alternative technologies is down the road a piece, Volkswagen already has viable prototypes in its R&D garages right now. We mean the hydrogen fuel cell. It most closely mirrors the convenience of gasoline—brief fueling times and consistent long-range driving in between. Hydrogen lasts up to 250 miles between fill-ups with tanks that hold approximately six kilograms of hydrogen. It gets up to two-and-ahalf times the mileage per kilogram that gasoline gets per gallon. Volkswagen knows this because it has the technology harnessed in a road-ready state in the shape of the Volkswagen Jetta, Passat and other models. The technology itself needs no perfecting. It’s already perfect: clean, efficient, economical, powerful enough and proven. Okay, longevity is a minor question mark. “It’s a similar situation to battery power,” says John Tillman, Volkswagen Advanced Powertrain Research Program Manager. “We’re getting 75,000 to 80,000 miles out of our hydrogen-powered vehicles. We need to get that to 150,000 miles.” It seems that Volkswagen has time to improve the life-use of its hydrogenpowered technology.

Volkswagen uses AC (alternating current) electric motors powered by this electrochemical reaction that generate up to 134 horsepower. Alternating current is more efficient because there is more power and less heat. Heat creates resistance in an electric motor, which diminishes power. The more resistance (translation: electrical friction), the greater the likelihood of a shutdown. In fact, the electric motor is actually water-cooled just like an internalcombustion engine—coolant, radiator, water jackets—the works. The fuel cell also has its own cooling system, which maintains the electric motor’s operating temperature at 180 degrees Fahrenheit.

“It’s getting the delivery system online,” says Tillman. “Even without all the local, state and federal governmental laws and regulations, it will take years to match the infrastructure of gasoline.” Occam’s Razor, a principle created in the 14th century, says that if multiple competing ideas are equal, select the one that introduces the fewest assumptions. Perhaps it’s one of many sound reasons why Volkswagen developed clean diesel as the next logical fuel source designed to help reduce the cost and environmental impact of everyday driving in the early 21st century. At some point, according to Tillman, in the pursuit of replacing internal combustion, Occam’s Razor will yield to chaos theory. “No one technology will replace the internal-combustion engine,” believes Tillman. “Families will own multiple cars for multiple applications—electric for urban commuting and perhaps a biofuel vehicle for distance driving.” There’s nothing chaotic, however, about the way that Volkswagen is covering all possibilities. It has clean diesel, biofuel, electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fuel-cell vehicles with significant road time, ready to proliferate. Perhaps, instead, the simple solution in regards to replacing the internal combustion-engine is to be ready for anything.

Along with some tidbits of Key West trivia: In 1982, the city formed the Conch Republic and declared war against the United States—for one minute. That kept my mind engaged until I reached the peak of the bridge, unclenched my jaw and took a peek at the scenery: an azure-blue sky with the Florida Bay below, dotted with

Many are nothing more than a bunch of mangroves growing out of the sea. Pastel-colored mom-and-pop motels, seafood shacks, palm reader storefronts and souvenir shops all beckoned me.

But the most alluring roadside attraction turned out to be the sunset overlooking the Florida Bay — streaks of orange, pink and red fanned over the horizon. After dinner (conch fritters, at last), I retired to my motel in Marathon Key, where my Eos coordinated nicely with the building’s peach-and-cream color scheme.

Next morning, I recharged with coffee and a bowl of oatmeal at Stout’s, the local breakfast spot, where the walls are covered with trophy fish and faded sailing photos. A boldface headline of a framed, front-page article in the Miami Herald announced the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, a reminder of the Keys’ proximity to Cuba, just 90 miles south of Key West.


At the Seven Mile Bridge, a historic site and possibly the most photographed place in the Keys, I paused to marvel at its span, which rises to a 65-foot arc to allow boats to pass underneath. A pedestrian bridge runs alongside of it, where you can rent a bike and pedal over part of it, or you can try your luck fishing off the railing. Henry Flagler, a railroad tycoon and real estate developer, first conceived of connecting the Keys with an overseas railway in the early 1900s. Much of that was destroyed by a hurricane in 1935. Eventually, the rails were replaced with the Overseas Highway, or Route 1, which begins in Key West at Mile Marker “0” and runs up the East Coast, ending in Fort Kent, Maine. In the watery depths beneath this network of bridges, an entirely different infrastructure thrives. The reef along the Keys is part of the third longest in the world and is home to 50-plus types of coral and more than 600 species of fish. To experience this underwater world firsthand, I drove to Bahia Honda State Park. One of the largest and best-kept parks in the Keys, the park sprawls across both sides of the highway with 2.5 miles of sandy, white beaches, a campground and ample areas for bird-watching and hiking. On a snorkeling trip there, the woman next to me reported she swam with barracudas and sharks her last time out. “Don’t worry, they won’t bother you,” she assured me. Five minutes out snorkeling, I had a showdown with a steelyeyed barracuda myself. For a moment, neither of us wavered. Then, I spun around and darted off as fast as my flippers would carry me toward more docile marine life. Back in the Eos, I settled into the butter-soft seat and put the top up to block the midday sun, opting for the sunroof view of the palm fronds. After deciding which station to listen to on the Eos’ satellite radio, I was off. At Big Pine Key, I discovered the National Key Deer Refuge, established in 1957 to protect a dwindling population of an endangered sub-species of goat-sized deer. Just down the road, I spy a sign: “No Name Pub.” With a name like that, how could I resist? The real draw of this local honky-tonk is the excellent pizza, topped with fresh-grilled shrimp, and best accompanied with an icy local brew. A real sense of camaraderie prevails here, and it’s worth a visit just to view the décor. An estimated $10,000 worth of dollar bills cover the bar walls, tacked on by patrons.

ruth is, I pulled over to consider what loomed ahead: bridges, lots of them. An hour earlier, I’d left Miami embarking on a one-tank road trip to the Florida Keys. ruth is, I pulled over to consider what loomed ahead: bridges, lots of them. An hour earlier, I’d left Miami embarking on a one-tank road trip to the Florida Keys. Just me, my Candy White VW Eos Lux and the open road. And with the car’s 31 mpg,* we have miles and miles ahead of us. No watches, no cell phones, no worries—not even a map. Keeping it in the family VW sponsors Major League Soccer for three years This summer, you might notice something new at soccer fields across America—cars, signage and activities from VW. It’s all part of an extension of Volkswagen of America’s sponsorship arrangement with Major League Soccer and its marketing arm. Under the sponsorship, VW will continue as MLS’ Official Automotive Partner and will also add some significant new grassroots initiatives.

he lyrics to the Jimmy Buffett song, the one where he broke his flip-flop and lost his last shaker of salt, raced through my mind. Along with some tidbits of Key West trivia: In 1982, the city formed the Conch Republic and declared war against the United States—for one minute. And get this: it’s against the law to kill a chicken in Key West, dating back to the days when cockfighting was rampant. That kept my mind engaged until I reached the peak of the bridge, unclenched my jaw and took a peek at the scenery: an azure-blue sky with the Florida Bay below, dotted with

sailboats tacking lazily in the shimmering turquoise waters. The Keys unfolded before me, an archipelago of about 1,700 islands. Many are nothing more than a bunch of mangroves growing out of the sea. But 45 are inhabited, linked by bridges, beginning with Key Largo and ending 106 miles south at Key West, the southernmost point in the continental U.S. The flat, scrub landscape gave way to a concrete land of strip malls and billboards in Key Largo. Pastel-colored mom-and-pop motels, seafood shacks, palm reader storefronts and souvenir shops all beckoned me.

But the most alluring roadside attraction turned out to be the sunset overlooking the Florida Bay — streaks of orange, pink and red fanned over the horizon. After dinner (conch fritters, at last), I retired to my motel in Marathon Key, where my Eos coordinated nicely with the building’s peach-and-cream color scheme.

Next morning, I recharged with coffee and a bowl of oatmeal at Stout’s, the local breakfast spot, where the walls are covered with trophy fish and faded sailing photos. A boldface headline of a framed, front-page article in the Miami Herald announced the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, a reminder of the Keys’ proximity to Cuba, just 90 miles south of Key West.


At the Seven Mile Bridge, a historic site and possibly the most photographed place in the Keys, I paused to marvel at its span, which rises to a 65-foot arc to allow boats to pass underneath. A pedestrian bridge runs alongside of it, where you can rent a bike and pedal over part of it, or you can try your luck fishing off the railing. Henry Flagler, a railroad tycoon and real estate developer, first conceived of connecting the Keys with an overseas railway in the early 1900s. Much of that was destroyed by a hurricane in 1935. Eventually, the rails were replaced with the Overseas Highway, or Route 1, which begins in Key West at Mile Marker “0” and runs up the East Coast, ending in Fort Kent, Maine. In the watery depths beneath this network of bridges, an entirely different infrastructure thrives. The reef along the Keys is part of the third longest in the world and is home to 50-plus types of coral and more than 600 species of fish. To experience this underwater world firsthand, I drove to Bahia Honda State Park. One of the largest and best-kept parks in the Keys, the park sprawls across both sides of the highway with 2.5 miles of sandy, white beaches, a campground and ample areas for bird-watching and hiking. On a snorkeling trip there, the woman next to me reported she swam with barracudas and sharks her last time out. “Don’t worry, they won’t bother you,” she assured me. Five minutes out snorkeling, I had a showdown with a steelyeyed barracuda myself. For a moment, neither of us wavered. Then, I spun around and darted off as fast as my flippers would carry me toward more docile marine life. Back in the Eos, I settled into the butter-soft seat and put the top up to block the midday sun, opting for the sunroof view of the palm fronds. After deciding which station to listen to on the Eos’ satellite radio, I was off. At Big Pine Key, I discovered the National Key Deer Refuge, established in 1957 to protect a dwindling population of an endangered sub-species of goat-sized deer. Just down the road, I spy a sign: “No Name Pub.” With a name like that, how could I resist? The real draw of this local honky-tonk is the excellent pizza, topped with fresh-grilled shrimp, and best accompanied with an icy local brew. A real sense of camaraderie prevails here, and it’s worth a visit just to view the décor. An estimated $10,000 worth of dollar bills cover the bar walls, tacked on by patrons.

A tough cell? Not for Volkswagen— Hydrogen fuel-cell technology is road-ready In the interest of innovation and improved air quality, Volkswagen scientists and engineers develop the inevitable replacement to the internal-combustion engine. Even though one of the best alternative technologies is down the road a piece, Volkswagen already has viable prototypes in its R&D garages right now. We mean the hydrogen fuel cell. It most closely mirrors the convenience of gasoline—brief fueling times and consistent long-range driving in between. Hydrogen lasts up to 250 miles between fill-ups with tanks that hold approximately six kilograms of hydrogen. It gets up to two-and-ahalf times the mileage per kilogram that gasoline gets per gallon. Volkswagen knows this because it has the technology harnessed in a road-ready state in the shape of the Volkswagen Jetta, Passat and other models. The technology itself needs no perfecting. It’s already perfect: clean, efficient, economical, powerful enough and proven. Okay, longevity is a minor question mark. “It’s a similar situation to battery power,” says John Tillman, Volkswagen Advanced Powertrain Research Program Manager. “We’re getting 75,000 to 80,000 miles out of our hydrogen-powered vehicles. We need to get that to 150,000 miles.” It seems that Volkswagen has time to improve the life-use of its hydrogenpowered technology.

Volkswagen uses AC (alternating current) electric motors powered by this electrochemical reaction that generate up to 134 horsepower. Alternating current is more efficient because there is more power and less heat. Heat creates resistance in an electric motor, which diminishes power. The more resistance (translation: electrical friction), the greater the likelihood of a shutdown. In fact, the electric motor is actually water-cooled just like an internalcombustion engine—coolant, radiator, water jackets—the works. The fuel cell also has its own cooling system, which maintains the electric motor’s operating temperature at 180 degrees Fahrenheit.

“It’s getting the delivery system online,” says Tillman. “Even without all the local, state and federal governmental laws and regulations, it will take years to match the infrastructure of gasoline.” Occam’s Razor, a principle created in the 14th century, says that if multiple competing ideas are equal, select the one that introduces the fewest assumptions. Perhaps it’s one of many sound reasons why Volkswagen developed clean diesel as the next logical fuel source designed to help reduce the cost and environmental impact of everyday driving in the early 21st century. At some point, according to Tillman, in the pursuit of replacing internal combustion, Occam’s Razor will yield to chaos theory. “No one technology will replace the internal-combustion engine,” believes Tillman. “Families will own multiple cars for multiple applications—electric for urban commuting and perhaps a biofuel vehicle for distance driving.” There’s nothing chaotic, however, about the way that Volkswagen is covering all possibilities. It has clean diesel, biofuel, electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fuel-cell vehicles with significant road time, ready to proliferate. Perhaps, instead, the simple solution in regards to replacing the internal combustion-engine is to be ready for anything.

Over the past 34 years since the Golf, formerly called the Rabbit in North America, first went on sale in the U.S., more than 1.8 million units have been sold in the U.S. It’s a simple science—give the people what they want, and then some. Road trip tips Warm weather has arrived and the road is calling. Check out these road trip tips before your tires hit the pavement.

Games, food, balloons, excited kids, tired parents, tons of goodwill…and Volkswagen Routan models. They all ruled the evening at Toth Elementary School’s yearly carnival this past spring. But how does the Routan fit into this scene? It’s part of an ongoing Volkswagen program, VW School Fundraiser, benefiting elementary schools throughout the United States. The Routan event at Toth Elementary, located in Perrysburg, Ohio, coincided with the school’s Relay for Life Carnival. Inside, the school was alive with carnival activities; outside, Volkswagen Routan models and other Volkswagen vehicles were in constant motion as teachers, parents and grandparents took test-drives, earning the school $5 per test-drive, compliments of Volkswagen. The school also received $50 up front for hosting the VW School Fundraiser event.

Volkswagen goes carbon-less In September 2007, Volkswagen launched the Carbon Neutral Project, a partnership with Carbonfund.org designed to address the issue of carbon emissions in global warming. Under the groundbreaking program, Volkswagen paid for one year of carbon offsets for each new vehicle sold through the end of 2008, thereby reducing VW owners’ carbon “footprint.” The project allowed Volkswagen to offset the cars’ carbon emissions by planting a variety of native trees in an area that became known as the VW Forest in Louisiana’s Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge. Ah, I see. So the only reason VW Motorsport finished first and second is because of diesel. What do you mean? Well, because diesel is so dirty and sooty, the cars behind you probably couldn’t see anything. So they couldn’t drive fast enough to keep up. No, not exactly. And, even if they could keep up, they probably didn’t want to. Max, those are myths about diesel that just aren’t true any more. VW is revolutionizing clean diesel technology. TDI® clean diesel technology from VW isn’t dirty or sooty, and it’s certainly not loud, smelly or slow. Diesel has come a long way since the days you’re thinking of, and it’s thanks in large part to Volkswagen. How so? I was in Europe a couple of years ago, and had a chance to drive one of the Polo Cup cars there. After just 30 minutes, I was hooked. I was convinced we needed to do something like this in the States. I told Clark [Campbell, Volkswagen of America’s motorsports manager] that we need to do this. To Clark’s amazing credit, he also saw the potential and value in something like this, and he just ran with it. He hasn’t looked back, and the results speak for themselves. World Car of the Year The Volkswagen Golf was honored as the 2009 World Car of the Year. A jury of 59 international automotive journalists from 25 countries around the world chose this year’s World Car of the Year. The announcement, which was made at this year’s New York International Auto Show, comes at the introduction of the sixth-generation, all-new 2010 Volkswagen Golf (see page 48), arriving in dealerships this fall. “It is a tremendous honor for Volkswagen to have its global bestselling model, the Golf, named the 2009 World Car of the Year,” said Stefan Jacoby, President/CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. Ward’s Automotive Group has honored the Volkswagen CC with one of the 2009 Ward’s Interior of the Year awards. According to Ward’s, the eleven winners who were recognized this year all had two key elements in common: great looks and great value. “There are certain aspects we look at closely in the Interior of the Year competition, and value is just as important to us as fit-and-finish, styling, comfort and safety,” says Drew Winter, editor in chief of Ward’s AutoWorld magazine. The Volkswagen CC was recognized in the popular-priced car category and is described by Ward’s as having “a beautifully executed interior.”

If the term “green car” automatically conjures up an image of a hybrid vehicle, you should know there’s another option that’s quickly growing in popularity. Today, “green” in automotive terms also includes clean diesel. “I’m after heightened reality,” says Tardio. “I want it to feel real—like a film that a real Volkswagen enthusiast would go out and make. It’s their film on steroids, basically.” So, it’s a little “loose” in look. The camera wobbles when the actors exchange words, as if an amateur is at the helm. “The audience should relate to them and think, ‘If this was me, this is the film I’d make,’” says Tardio. “You want the actors to be funny and you want them to feel real. The audience should feel like they helped make this film.”
