The Fall of the Berlin Wall took place in Germany on the east side of Berlin. The East German leaders were to ones who put the Berlin Wall up in the first place. It was done to keep the Western ‘’fascists’’ from entering the East of Berlin as the East consisted of Capitalist (Democratic) countries while the West consisted of Communist (Republican) countries. This created an automatic divide between the two sides. Five days after half a million people had come together in East Berlin in a mass protest on the 9th November 1989, tensions were rising between the people of East Berlin and the East German leaders and in an attempt to calm the protests, they loosened the border which made traveling easier for the East Germans.

The West of Germany at this point consisted of areas that were populated by the British, French and Americans while the East of Germany was made up of established territory which was owned by the Soviet Union which they gained from the peace treaty that was written up at the end of WW2, although Germans lived on the East side of Berlin. The Berlin Wall was built to separate the capital cities of each side of the country and they both existed as separate countries until the Fall of Berlin Wall which brought the two halves back together.

To this day the Berlin Wall remains as one of the most powerful symbols of the Cold War. In many ways the Berlin wall was a perfect symbol for the ‘’Iron Curtain’’ that separated the two opposing sides of Germ a ny.
