IOM GRAIN, LLC

Leading Supplier of Certified Non-GMO Soybeans

state-of-the-art facility was constructed in rural Portland, Indiana by IOM Grain, LLC in 2014. Inside the impressive building, workers screen, size and sort soybeans, using the latest technology in the industry to process up to 35,000 pounds of non-GMO, food-grade soybeans per hour. IOM, stands for Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan—a fitting acronym for this business. Most everyone living in the region is aware of soybeans as a common crop. Not only are soybeans abundant here, this unique region grows and harvests particularly high-protein, foodgrade soybeans. Being located in one of the best growing regions in the world, IOM Grain therefore has easy access

to the area from which farms grow high-protein soybeans. Soybeans go into everything, says Ray Loucks, owner of IOM Grain. “Whenever you see soy gum used in Kashi bars, protein bars, and health food bars—the glue that sticks them together is soy lecithin. “(Our) soybean,” Ray explains, “has higher protein and higher sucrose than the typical soybean. It has a very sweet, smooth flavor, naturally. “The sucrose in this bean is easily digestible. It is good for you, as opposed to added sugar flavorings and flavor maskers that you might buy in the local grocery store.” IOM Grain is involved with soybean processing from planting AUGUST 2016 | wabashvalleyliving.com | 5

After acceptance, the grain is then processed, packaged, and shipped according to customers’ needs. Commercial customers of IOM Grain produce a variety of products including tofu, miso, soy milk, and soy sauce. IOM Grain also sells its own retail-branded soybeans, known as “Tiger Soybeans,” presently available via Amazon. com, Instagram and Facebook. through delivery. Its staff works with growers year-round to instill best management practices. Throughout the season, IOM Grain employees visit the growers’ fields to review the crop’s progress. Shortly after harvest, the staff visit the growers’ storage facilities to collect a sample from every bin. The samples are tested to determine the quality of the grain before it is delivered to the IOM Grain plant. At delivery, prior to accepting the grain, workers sample and test the grain on each truck. This ensures that all grain received will meet customer specifications.

According to its website, IOM Grain claims, “Our mission is to make Tiger Soybeans available everywhere. We think it is important to bring this hearthealthy, protein and vitaminrich bean to as many of you as possible. Because we know you want a balanced life, better health and more energy for your family.” IOM Grain is certified by third-party auditors for cleanliness and food safety processes. Quality checks are made throughout the day to ensure that the facility produces and packages only the highest quality, non-GMO soybeans. Infrared, chemical, and genetic testing are used to provide customers with the cleanest food-grade soybeans.

IOM Grain’s product is packaged in various forms for transportation ranging from bulk rail or truck, and export or custom containers, as well as in one metric ton tote bags and 3-ply paper or poly bags in various weights. And, of course, as Tiger Soybeans in 800 gram packages. IOM Grain is now one of the world’s leading suppliers of certified NonGMO soybeans. Ray attributes much of the company’s success to the impressive team of employees who continually evaluate their progress and respond to changing conditions. “We started in 1990. I was a partner in a farm, and we were looking for value-added opportunities in agriculture.” At that time, the farm’s main product was corn. “We came across a person who was in the business of exporting corn, and we began exporting foodgrade corn through his company.” That company sold the corn to a Japanese importing company that sold products for human consumption. “We finally got to the point where almost all of our corn was going to human consumption. We were selling barge-load quantities—and getting a nice premium for that quality!”

After successfully producing foodgrade corn, Ray approached his Japanese customers to sell soybeans, also. “However, they explained they bought only from certain companies and wanted to purchase containerized, clean soybeans.” While planning for producing and selling to this market, Ray and his company located a family-owned seed plant in Jay County that had been closed for 17 years. “We looked it over and leased it,” he recalls. “It took us about 9 months just to clean it for food grade, and another year to retrofit it.” Many technological changes had to be made. “We incorporated in 2002,” says Ray, “and by 2003, we were up and running and looking for customers.” Today, he says, “We are a professional corporation moving forward. Since 2010, we have experienced a 270% increase in business. “Along with that, our production per employee has tripled, which speaks volumes about the staff—everybody has production responsibilities, everybody has administrative responsibilities. This is a team of smart, hard-working people who are mission oriented.”

7 7

Ray concludes, “Our job here is to provide exactly what the customer wants. They are the ones paying the bills. “Right now, the customer wants high-quality, non-GMO beans, and that demand is increasing. Over the years, IOM Grain has become a trusted name in the foodgrade industry because quality matters to us.” He adds, “If drinking soy milk is new for you, we’ll show you how easy it is to make in order to enjoy these important health benefits. You’ll discover for yourself that Tiger Soybeans are the perfect bean for the soy milk you can make at home. Experience for yourself a rich, smooth taste that’s naturally sweet.”

Business Changes for a Changing Industry

I

Article by Beth Steury

t’s In 1928, Ed Affolder launched Ed Affolder & Sons on County Road 700 South in Berne, Indiana, across from what is now South Adams Schools. Ed relocated the farm implement dealership to its current location on U.S. Highway 27 in the late 1940s. The business moved into a new facility that had been intended to house a slaughterhouse—a plan that failed to materialize. As a youngster, Greg Milholland remembers accompanying his father and grandfather to the implement business owned by his grandfather’s brother. In 1974 at the age of 17, Greg was hired into the parts department. “It was my first full-time job,” he recalls. “And as of February 2016, I’ve been here 42 years.”

Greg continues, “After I’d been here 2½ years, Ed, who was considering retirement, offered me some shares of stock.” While at first he wasn’t keen on the idea, the 20 year-old sought the wise counsel of some local business owners. He then concluded it was a good opportunity and chose to take Ed up on his offer. Greg continued to work in the parts department—ordering, stocking and selling equipment parts—and eventually became the department manager. “I stayed in the parts department for 25 years.” He arrived at a crossroads and determined he needed to either acquire the business or move on. “When that time came, I made a proposition to my partners and bought them out.” Over the years, AUGUST 2016 | wabashvalleyliving.com | 9

“Today, our main farm equipment line is Agco, the parent company of Massey Ferguson, Hesston, White Planter, and Sunflower. We also handle Bobcat and Kubota—both big brands for us. We deal in Great Plains, Kuhn and Kuhn Knight equipment, as well.” “As for the many brands we offer, we’re like an independent insurance agent who sells insurance from various companies. It makes our business more flexible. Right now, the big row-crop equipment isn’t selling because commodity prices are down, but livestock equipment, such as skid loaders, are selling well.” There’s a steady demand for zero-turn mowers, compact tractors and other lawn and landscape equipment, as well as livestock equipment, as it tends to wear out quickly due to heavy use. “We service all of the brands we sell. We also rent skid loaders and skid loader attachments. There’s a steady 12-month need for that type of equipment.” A full line of die cast toys— including replicas of Massey Ferguson, Bobcat, and Kubota equipment in 1/16, 1/32, or even 1/64 scale—are available at Affolder Implement Sales. The store also carries a variety of riding toys.

10

Greg remembers when there were five implement dealers in Berne— and “probably ten in the county.” Now, Affolder Implement Sales is the only dealer in Adams County, and also serves customers in Jay and Blackford counties, where there are no established dealers. Tougher economic times and fewer farmers have contributed to the decreased number of dealers. “There’s been a lot of transition in the farm equipment business in the last 25 years,” Greg explains. “Where once there were twelve farmers per square mile, now there is only one.” Other factors have influenced the changes in the equipment industry, as well. “The customer is much more mobile now. In the last five years, the biggest thing that has changed our business is the internet. Customers see a piece online and commit to it.” Shipping arrangements can be made at either end of the transaction to ensure the purchase reaches its intended destination.

By way of its website, Affolder Implement Sales recently sold a tractor to a customer in Seattle, Washington, shipped several pieces to a Missouri customer, and sent one piece of equipment to New Mexico. New developments in farm machinery include tractors equipped with GPS systems and other machinery outfitted with scales to control the application of fertilizer or manure. Reflecting on the agricultural climate, Greg says, “Commodity prices have more to do with new equipment purchases and new equipment development than anything. We‘ve just come off the best six years in agriculture—in my lifetime—so it’s pretty hard to top that. “Commodity prices are down now, but for six years, they were outstanding. A lot of equipment was purchased during that time. As prices have come down, there’s not the need for as much new equipment.”

Many Berne residents will remember the December 19, 2011, fire that destroyed a major portion of the business. The fire started in the service shop, where large quantities of both new and used oil fueled the rapid progression of the very hot fire. All parts were destroyed. “We were fortunate it didn’t take the front part of the business that contained all of our records,” Greg says. Of what remained, he adds, “Everything was black. Everything had to be cleaned.” Over the next nine months as the facility was rebuilt, Affolder Implement Sales continued to offer equipment repairs, thanks to the generosity of two local farmers and one downtown business. Ted Liechty and Ned Liechty each offered the use of their shops, as did Moser Motor Sales. “They were very instrumental in helping us stay afloat.” Affolder Implement Sales resumed business in the 60% larger, more modern facility in September of 2012. Although Greg’s career began in the parts department, he admits the addition of electronic components and many other advances have passed him by. “You have to work with the parts every day to keep up.”

Caring for Customers and Their Trees

F

Article by Jodi Dean

or Doug Masterson, cutting trees for a living means the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. Doug’s father was an employee on the City of Bluffton’s tree crew for 37 years. When the elder Masterson was not at work, he and his son completed yard work at home and for family and friends. Often, that meant the father and son duo cut down trees and trimmed branches. So, when Doug stated to his wife Marie one day, “I think I want to get into the tree trimming business,” she approved with a quick, “Go for it.” Doug, who was employed in construction at the time, needed a business name. Struggling to find the right moniker, he asked a customer about it.

The recently widowed woman replied, “I am renting your hands to get these jobs done.” Doug like the “rent-a-hand” idea but wanted to narrow it to fit his particular business. Hence, he named the company “R.A.H. Tree Service & Stump Removal.” With his wife’s encouragement, Doug purchased a truck and brought the appropriate tree trimming equipment. Marie was actually the visionary behind the purchase of truck from Nesco in Bluffton. “I am a bus driver for BlufftonHarrison Schools,” she explains, “so I know how to operate the air brakes. I tested the truck, and it drove very nicely.”

AUGUST 2016 | wabashvalleyliving.com | 15

The Mastersons purchased the truck, made a few repairs, and customized it with a logo. After acquiring the necessary equipment, they purchased business cards, placed newspaper ads and mailed flyers. The tree trimming business quickly began to take root. Doug’s simple business goals have meant further growth for R.A.H. Tree Service. He aims to keep prices low and fair and to approach customers with kindness. Doug says it’s also a priority to treat the customer’s property as if it were his own. Marie says, adamantly, “I tell Doug clean-up is a must. You need to leave the property looking as if you were never there. Do not tear up the yard, and clean up any mess from the tree work.” R.A.H. is a family business— Doug does the tree work, while Marie completes the office tasks. “I answer and return the text messages and phone calls,” she explains, “set up all the appointments, and do all the billing and quotes.” 16

Marie does her best to balance the family business with her outside jobs and a growing family. Besides driving a school bus, she also serves as Clerk-Treasurer for the Town of Vera Cruz. Together, Doug and Marie have two grown children and five grandchildren—including four granddaughters and one grandson. Granddaughter number five is expected to arrive later this fall. Family roots are what keep R.A.H. Tree Service & Stump Removal firmly planted. The Mastersons’ son DJ works alongside his father, removing trees, cutting branches, and chopping wood. DJ and a family friend are part of the trio that make up the permanent team. The Mastersons’ grandchildren step in from to time to help advertise the business. Every summer, the R.A.H. Tree Service and Stump Removal truck appears in local parades, including the Bluffton Street Fair’s Industrial Parade. Doug and Marie’s grandchildren usually ride in the truck or walk alongside it.

“We have one customer who has several trees on their property, which have been damaged by storms several times,” says Marie. “They are such loyal customers; they will not allow anyone to take our advertising sign out of the front yard. “Recently, they were hit by another storm and had several trees damaged and some uprooted from the ground. There was one tree in particular that they were sad to see cut down.”

Steve Rich, Agent 230 S 2nd Street Decatur, IN 46733 Bus: 260-728-2933 steve@steverichinsurance.com

According to Marie, Doug took note of this and made a chair out of the trunk for the couple. Marie smiles. “They can sit on this tree now, which makes them very happy.”

There are a lot of positive moments, Marie says, but tree trimming can also be scary. Big trees can do a lot of damage, if not taken down properly.

Doug has learned from his trade and desires homeowners to follow simple safety tips. He encourages them to “use common sense” and “beware of dangers with trees that are near power lines.” According to the expert, trees and power lines are serious business. It’s often best to leave tree trimming and removal to an expert. Doug also advises drivers to wait patiently for tree trimmers in the road. They often need to block the road, he explains, as trees must fall a certain way to prevent damage. “Doug and his crew have many happy customers,” Marie says, “and we will continue to do a good job for all of our customers.”

HABEGGER FLOORING DISTRIBUTORS

Flooring Business with a Unique Focus

I

Article by Beth Steury

n 1978, after years of training in the field of flooring installation, Eldon Habegger launched Habegger Flooring in Decatur, Indiana. His shop was first located at the current site of Pizza Hut’s parking lot on 13th Street. Over time, the flooring business relocated to the corner of 13th and U.S. Hwy 224, then again to its current home on Village Green Drive. According to Eldon’s son Lynn, Habegger Flooring was “strictly a retail store” at first. About ten years into the business, Eldon began providing materials to the nearby recreational vehicle (RV) industry. “They used his expertise to solve problems with flooring in the RV units,” explains Lynn.

Eldon recognized a unique niche and developed his company into a larger distribution business, providing supplies and materials to the RV manufacturing sector. When Eldon contemplated retirement, Lynn and his wife Patty, who lived in Indianapolis at the time, purchased the business. They assumed ownership January 1, 2003. “I grew up helping dad install floors,” Lynn remembers, “and used that skill to pay my way through college.” The younger Habegger then spent 30 years in the field of computer science. But, Eldon’s retirement, he says, “got me back to this area, close to my parents. And, the business has thrived.”

Lynn and Patti brought valuable skills to the 25-year-old flooring business—Lynn has an MBA, and Patti holds a degree in accounting. For three years after acquiring the business, the couple commuted to allow their teenaged children to complete high school before relocating to the area. C

Within those three years, Lynn and Patti realized they needed to narrow the focus of their business. “And then, the recession settled it,” Lynn recalls. Over the last decade, Habegger Flooring has transitioned to a more wholesale-oriented business model.

“We’re not a full-service retail store anymore. We stopped doing installations about seven years ago. “Now, the majority of our sales are to the RV industry. We do keep our doors open to the public, but we are really more of a wholesaler now.” Habegger Flooring offers “wholesale” pricing to the public and maintains a large inventory of do-it-yourself tools and supplies. The Habeggers have dabbled in the manufactured housing industry as well, but their expertise is grounded in the RV industry where they’ve found their niche. “We specialize in wall tile, flooring, and glass products,” Lynn says. “We have a huge selection of tiles and backsplash materials.” A few of the long list of manufacturers Habegger Flooring represents 27

include: Daltile, Crossville, Mohawk, Shaw, Tarkett, Masland, Mannington, Schluter, TileWare, Karndean, Glazzio, Fiandre, Kertiles, and MSI Stone and Tile. Lynn explains, “I have relationships with a lot of manufacturers, due to the volume purchasing I do for the RV industry.” Habegger’s deals in a vast array of flooring and wall cladding products, such as: carpet, ceramic tile, porcelain tile, wall tile, mosaic, glass, stone, laminate, luxury vinyl tile, and vinyl goods, as well as all the supplies—glue, underlayment, setting materials, metal trims, etc.—needed for installation.

“We’re always looking for new product, trying to expand our product base.” Referring to his retail flooring customers, Lynn says, “I tell people they can save money twice—by purchasing wholesale, then using a general contractor.” The store maintains a list of contractors to assist customers seeking skilled installers. “We refer customers to the contractors, who also refer their clients to us. “A new technology hit the market in the last ten years—luxury vinyl tile. It differentiates from original vinyl, as it comes in plank or tile-shaped pieces, rather than a roll. This class

of product is taking more and more market share every year.” It has both a stone and vinyl composite that makes it very hard and durable.

“The whole industry, as far as flooring and wall cladding, has really blossomed with a lot of new technologies and designs. The options today for buyers are a thousand times what they were ten years ago. “The whole industry, in terms of design and style, has dramatically changed for the better for the customer.” One of those new options is the availability of high-definition printing that can make porcelain tiles look exactly like real stone. Lynn adds, “Today’s products are so much more durable. Chemistry and technology have added so much to the stain resistance and durability of carpeting. Porcelain tiles have improved, as have installation techniques. “A lot of the new materials are more user-friendly. They require less skill. The way the product is designed and the installation materials have simplified the process.”

How do these changes affect the larger portion of the Habeggers’ business? “The trends in the RV industry align with the same residential trends people are following from the home shows and the HGTV network,” says Lynn. “From a residential perspective, the big products now are porcelain tile and mosaics for back splashes. “More people want open concepts in their floor plans with a hard surface throughout. ince In the winter of 1976, Richard and Beverly Reed established a hardware business in downtown Bluffton. It was there, the couple’s young son Gregg learned how to serve customers, run the register, and mix the paint. Gregg loved the challenge so much, he decided to follow his parents’ footsteps. Four decades later, Gregg and his wife Cindy operate the store together. Gregg says, “I am a second generation retailer. I grew up in the business and enjoy working for myself.” As the business grew, the Reeds realized they needed more retail space. In 1995, they relocated the hardware store from downtown to its present location on north Main Street.

Today, the store is known as Reed’s Do It Best Hardware— and it’s more than a small-town hardware retailer. Reed’s Do It Best offers just about everything the DIY homeowner, hobby gardener or pet lover might need. In addition, the store offers unique gifts and pool supplies. For the home improvement “weekend warrior,” Reed’s Do It Best offers customers a broad range of supplies and equipment, from the basic nail and hammer to power tools. For those who need a tool for only a few hours, Gregg says, “We are big in tool rental.” Customers may rent chainsaws, leaf blowers, trimmers, and tillers to complete a task or two. When one wishes to show off his latest improvements to friends and AUGUST 2016 | wabashvalleyliving.com | 33

For the drab room or house exterior in need of a brighter coat, Reed’s Do It Best offers a Paint Center. “We carry three types of paint,” advises Gregg. “Valspar, Porter, and Sherwin Williams-Do It Best.” The store sells everything from interior paint to varnish and shellac, along with a wide variety of paint accessories, from patching and drywall compound to wood protector and sealer. And, yes, employees can custom mix the paint to get the perfect color for those kitchen or bedroom walls. For the gardener, Reed’s Do It Best offers a one-of-akind Garden Center. Gregg explains, “We grow our own flowers in our greenhouse. Our store has large and small hanging baskets, smaller planter flowers, fruit trees and vegetable plants.” In addition, gardeners will find stepping stones, wind chimes,

and garden flags to make their landscape more colorful and welcoming. Of course, Reed’s Do It Best also carries furniture, fountains, and BBQ grills to complete any outdoor living space. Animal owners will find supplies at Reed’s Do It Best for cow, cat, dog, goat, pig, or horse. Gregg and his staff offer a wide selection of animal feed and related goods in the Farm Pet and Supply Section. In the spring, the Reeds have been known to sell baby chicks and rabbits to 4-H youth. Customers can purchase cattle feed, dog bones, cat toys, and other pet necessities in a single trip. The store carries birdseed and feeders, too. Gift givers themselves, Gregg and Cindy offer a variety of gift items in their store. “We have something for everyone on your list,” Gregg assures. Selections include children’s toys, picture frames, coffee mugs, greeting cards, wine toppers, Yankee candles and more. For memorial occasions, the store carries bereavement 35

And today, says Gregg, “We are working on projects to make our store better, faster—we’re always trying to improve our business.” This means adding new products and services so local customers don’t have make a long trip to the big city. The newest addition is pool and pond care. Reed’s Do It Best Hardware has become the area’s largest dealer of GLB Pool Care products. Gregg and Cindy are able to provide advice to those families interested in adding a pool to their property. They can even arrange to have a pool installed. When asked the reason for his store’s success after 41 years, Gregg points out, “We have legendary customer service.” In fact, both Gregg and Cindy put in 8 to 10 hours each day, and they have a tremendous passion for helping people.

Gregg enjoys helping customers solve problems with their project, whether it be fixing a plumbing leak or installing a deck. His four decades of service allow him to give expert advice. Cindy enjoys assisting customers, as well, and oversees the Garden Center and gift sections. Gregg and Cindy have built a solid business and reputation in town. As a side venture, Gregg decided to purchase the car wash across the street. Andy’s Car Wash offers both self-serve 36

and automatic bays, as well as a self-service vacuum center. When the Reeds’ are not working, they enjoy time with their family. Gregg and Cindy have two grown children and four grandchildren—and, they hope more grandchildren will follow. The pair love their dog Jake, too. He serves as the store’s mascot. 10 Years of BBQ, Music and More

Article by Dee Fisher

t’s summer time, and a diverse spectrum of annual festivals is swirling around us, honoring everything from flowers and animals to local historical heritage. Food is a major player at most festivals, and a festival dedicated to a particular type of food allows us to indulge a bit without excessive guilt—at least, until the day after the festival ends.

Van Wert, Ohio will host its 10th annual Rib Fest on August 5 and 6, according to Larry Lee, Director of the Van Wert Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). “Ten years ago, none of our committee knew anything about running a rib festival,” he says. “One of our committee members, a local restauranteur, suggested having a rib fest as a new fundraiser for the Van Wert CVB.

“It’s been a total learning experience for all of us. One thing has led to another, and here we are, a decade later, going strong and growing!” There have been many rib vendors over the years at Van Wert Rib Fest, ranging from local favorites from here in Van Wert County to as far away as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania! Local businesses include Gibson’s Barnyard BBQ from Convoy, Timmy’s Pizza & BBQ of Garrett, Indiana, and DMH Low ‘N’ Slow BBQ & Catering of Fort Wayne. Each of these vendors are well-known in the area as winners of other rib festivals. Coming from outside of the area, loaded with award-winning sauces and ribs, are: After Hours BBQ of Orrville, Ohio; Smoke Shack BBQ AUGUST 2016 | wabashvalleyliving.com | 39

of Pickerington, Ohio; Bad Azz BBQ, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Pigtails BBQ, West Salem, Ohio. “In fact,” Larry says, “there were many more rib vendors that requested information about coming. We decided to limit the number to six or seven so our festival goers are not overwhelmed.” Van Wert area guests will recognize several of the non-rib vendors this year at Rib Fest. Cold treats will be available, including CJ’s Shaved Ice and Sycamore Ice Cream—both of Van Wert. For popcorn enthusiasts, Cumberland Kettle Corn of Sidney will be mixing up their brand of hot corn. Rismiller Concessions of Arcanum will provide some of that great “fair food,” such as funnel cakes, corn dogs, and lemon shake-ups. Finally, for the adults among us, Jubilee Winery of Delphos will be hosting a wine and craft beer tasting tent. Something for people of all ages! Van Wert Rib Fest gets underway at 5 p.m. on Friday evening. The HomeRun Derby starts off the activities, raising money for the local girls softball league. Headlining the Friday night music is Sierra Shame of Fort Wayne. The group formed in 2005, but this year marks their last year together. According to their website, “It’s time for families and personal interests to take precedence.” Van Wert Rib Fest is one of their last performances, so get out to hear their own personal blend of original songs, classic rock, and new country. 40

Opening for Sierra Shame is Soft ‘N Heavy, another Fort Wayne band. Soft ‘N Heavy is a relatively new group (created in 2012) that specializes in classic psychedelic and blues music. By Saturday, Rib Fest activities are in high gear! The annual Wiffle Ball Tournament begins bright and early at 8 a.m., expanded this year with a division for grades eight and under, as well a division for grades nine through twelve. After gates officially open at 11 a.m., the Cornhole Tournament

begins at 1 p.m., followed at 3 p.m. by “When Pigs Fly”—a fun event in which small toy pigs are dropped from a height, with contestants betting on particular pigs to win. All proceeds from the “Pigs” event benefit the United Way of Van Wert County. The YMCA of Van Wert County will host “Pig Races” at 4 p.m. Live pigs will be released on a short race track, with festival goers betting on who will cross the finish line first. Mike Schumm of Willshire is supplying the pigs, and all proceeds benefit the YMCA.

Another new event this year is the Car Show and Cruise-In, starting at 3 p.m., with awards presented at 7. All cars are welcome, although pre-registration is also available via email (ribfestcarshow@gmail. com). Awards will be given in the following categories: Best Ford, Mopar, GM, Truck, Ratrod, Import, Farthest Traveled, and Oldest Car at the Show. The music headliner for Saturday, in a return appearance, is the band Mustang Sally. The group is from Nashville, Tennessee and is unique in that five of its seven members are female. The band’s energetic country music has been enjoyed across the country, and also, internationally. Mustang Sally will follow a group new to Van Wert Rib Fest—Hot ‘N Nasty from the Defiance, Ohio area. They are a down-and-dirty outlaw rock and roll band, soon to release their first album. “As has happened a few times in past years,” says Larry, “the Rib Fest and the Route 127 Sales are scheduled for the same weekend. We are doing our best here in Van Wert to help visitors through the street work currently underway on south Route 127.

“There will be a lot of signage to help both festival attendees and the yard-salers get around. Of course, we also invite those driving from sale to sale to stop in at the Rib Fest. “One couple from the Washington, D.C. area happened on Rib Fest while traveling up and down the highway hitting the yard sales, and they’ve been back for Rib Fest every year for the past five years.” A complete schedule of events can be found online at www. vanwertribfest.com, and stay upto-date via Van Wert Rib Fest’s Facebook page. Event admission is $5 per person starting at 5 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday, with free admission on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
