Amy Hannah Johnston
Amy Hannah Johnston, a retired Brigadier General, dedicated over 30 years to the U.S. Army, where her leadership and commitment to service made a lasting impact. Born in Edina, MN, and raised in Findlay, OH, she was instilled with hard work and community service values that guided her throughout her career. Amy served in key military roles in locations such as Seoul, Korea, and Mons, Belgium, where she worked with the United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command in Korea, and NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE). Her military career included significant humanitarian efforts, including Operation Sea Signal in Guantánamo Bay, disaster response after Hurricane Katrina, and deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq during pivotal operations like Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Amy also served as Chief of Army Public Affairs, leading efforts to enhance military communication strategies at the Pentagon and holding senior roles in U.S. Forces Korea and SHAPE. After the unexpected passing of her husband, Major General Gary W. Johnston, a decorated Military Intelligence Officer, Amy earned the Gary Johnston Leadership Award at Arkansas Tech University, continuing his legacy of leadership and excellence. In retirement, Amy Johnston remains dedicated to service. She is an active member of the Advisory Council for the Center for Information, Democracy, and Citizenship at the American University in Bulgaria, advocating for global democratic values. Additionally, she contributes to local environmental efforts as a Tree Steward with Tree Fredericksburg, working to expand urban green spaces. Amy also volunteers with her therapy dog, Duke, through the Alliance for Therapy Dogs, providing emotional support to military personnel and veterans. Through her continued work in leadership, community service, and advocacy, Amy Hannah’s influence continues to shape future leaders and contribute to global and local initiatives.
