PENELOPE CHIUSANO

PENELOPE CHIUSANO “HERALDING the SOUL-STICE”

DECEMBER 11, 2015 – FEBRUARY 2, 2016

Judy Chicago proclaimed: “I am trying to make art that relates to the deepest and most mythic concerns of human kind and I believe that, at this moment of history, feminism is humanism.” New York based contemporary artist Penelope Chiusano’s magical mix of human figures with collage reflects a desire to create art that concerns itself with the deepest myths of femininity and humanity. Reverberating with a feminine odyssey of ideology, Penny Chiusano’s mixed media works on paper demonstrate a whimsical and satirical approach to the plight of womanhood. Offering a droll new perspective on the feminine subtext, her charming silhouettes of “Domestic Divas” are created with recycled material and hand written text. These delightful feminine dreamscapes and “Female Goddesses” humorously speak about the nuances of the female experience with an invigorating freedom and a sweeping spiritual energy. From a particularly female perspective, the New York based artist creates both figural and gestural realms as she blends color and soulfulness into a mixed medium. Fantasy and whimsy intermingle in her feminine narrative oeuvre where female goddesses enchantingly glide through a two-dimensional surface resonating with a poeticism of action. Alluringly communicating the mysteries of being a woman, this spectrum of magically fantastical personas stylistically emote the feminine mystique. An extraordinary imaginative eye and skilled brush strokes develop these female allegorical transfigurations while Ms. Chiusano grounds her rhythmic silhouettes to embody the wonderment of being a woman. The alchemy of enchanted and fantastical elements are imperceptibly perceived and are emphatically articulated in her oeuvre as she opens portals to fresh perspectives of femininity, love, life and human relationships.

“Taxi” Watercolor and Ink on Paper 24” x 19”

Witty, ironic titles further enhance the joy of her optical fantasies where a vibrant employment of palette is infused with symbolism of timely cultural feminine issues. Ms. Chiusano’s tableaux exudes a learned sensitivity towards her intimate themes as she gently acknowledges a delicate innate empathy to womanhood while she mystically radiates the spiritual harmony of women through a fusion of variegated materials, combining delicate fabrics, prefabricated industrial plastics and colorful paints to composite a single image of female reflexivity. Her intricate investigations of juxtaposing materials creates an all-over composition questioning women’s age-old conservative roles appropriately through satire, using humor as a vehicle to externalize the tumultuous issues undertaken by strong women historically and continuing into contemporary society. Unique and deceptively complex, Penny Chiusano’s oeuvre demonstrates a deep love of both her subjects and the principles that govern them. Celebrated in exhibitions across the Northeast including New York and New Jersey, as well as Palm Beach, Florida, Penelope Chiusano is also a member of the Mamaroneck Artist Guild and the Pelham Arts Forum. Her art hangs in private collections nationwide as well as in corporate boardrooms. Amsterdam Whitney Gallery is delighted to shine a spotlight on this contemporary rising star.

BLAKE EMORY

BLAKE EMORY “CHELSEA ARTISTIC VISIONS”

DECEMBER 11, 2015 – FEBRUARY 2, 2016

Inspired by the credo of Roy Lichtenstein: “Art doesn’t transform. It just plain forms,” New York artist Blake Emory optically reconstructs reality and paints bold and arresting compositions that strike a balance between fine art and pop culture. Mr. Emory’s optical illusionary “Zebra Love” Series manifests his Optic Modernism vision, which intermingles cultural commentary with humor, intermixing dreams and reality, melding a playful sexuality with a bold graphic, iconic design. Constructing a distinctive visual lexicon through his hybrid Op style, which is also inspired by Victor Vaserly’s 1938 Zebra painting, Mr. Emory’s curvilinear black and white striped “Zebra Love” series offers a unique twist on contemporary art. “I like to think of my work as representing the unity of mankind,” says Blake Emory. “The Zebra is one of nature’s grandest designs and I fell in love with this beautiful formation and found that its geometry gave me a new form of expression in Optic Modernism.” Passion, divine geometry and beauty meld to create the “Optic Modernist” movement pioneered by Blake Emory. By challenging artistic boundaries and embracing Pop and Op Art, Blake Emory cites social media, pop culture, and global issues as strong influences on his Optic Modernist art. In his Zebra Love collection, Mr. Emory blends the bold, graphic pattern of the zebra to create an optical illusion of the female silhouette and states: “The zebra is nature’s grand design.” Drawing on objects from pop culture such as featuring his signature Red Stiletto shoe in his compositions, he isolates it from its known context, thus creating works that merge the language of modernist imagery with references to film, literature, and music, as well as to the artist’s own life. Mr. Emory states: “The Red Stiletto symbolizes the passionate steps needed for mankind to liberate themselves from the human construct.” By superimposing these visual elements as cultural phenomena and isolating them in his paintings, he creates Optic Modernist chromatic vibrations that emerge as optical illusion which offer fascinating perspectives. These visual interactive labyrinths focus on the perceptual aspects of art, resulting both in the illusion of movement and the interaction of color relationships in space. Blake Emory’s black and white wavy line “Zebra Love” paintings metamorph into a tense and contradictory juxtaposition, creating effects through the use of pattern and line. These trompe-l’œil paintings, or optical visual tricks that fool the eye, are perceptual experiences related to how vision functions. Not contained by contoured lines, rather the stripes appear to both meld into and burst forth from the black and white wavy lines which are placed closely to one another on the canvas surface, creating a volatile figure-ground relationship. This Florida born artist remixes current trends in his work resulting in a fresh, unique syntax.

“Perspectives” Oil on Canvas 24” x 30”

Bright, confrontational, and enigmatic, Blake Emory’s Optic Modernist paintings and prints are widely collected and showcased in important corporate collections and are unmatched in verve, consummate skill and heightened artistic energy. Considered by many to be neo-Renaissance man, Blake Emory delves into all forms of art with various multi-media extravaganzas. A recognized sculptor, his marble sculptures are inspired by his Zebra Love designs where he carves optical illusions into the stone. Also known as a musician; he has performed in many bands from jazz to heavy metal, and plays the guitar as well as sings. Blake Emory is also an accomplished playwright, film maker, writer and director and is currently working on a feature film entitled “Akirema”. In addition to this multi-dimensional oeuvre, his “Zebra Love” design will be featured on limited edition bottles of a new premium vodka line, bearing the trademark name of Emory Vodka and was launched nationally in 2015.

LILIANA JACHADURIAN LILIANA JACHADURIAN “SUBLIMINAL TREASURES”

DECEMBER 11, 2015 – FEBRUARY 2, 2016

Surrealist master Rene Magritte once mused, “Art evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist.” Contemporary Argentine artist Liliana Jachadurian’s oil on canvas creations are filled with emblematic imagery fully imbued with imaginatively fulfilling surreal figures that contemplate the heart, mind and soul of contemporary society. The artistic combination of strokes arouses, through color and attitude, the soul which freely expresses itself: now frantic, now calm. Ms. Jachadurian’s surrealist compositions bar from the mind remembrance of our lived reality in order to present novel imagery never seen before by the naked eye. Her subject matter is nature transfigured through the unbridled depths of the unconscious, where the imagination reigns supreme and exhorts fantastical newfound imagery too entrancing to exist in our world. Ms. Jachadurian cumulates the animal and plant kingdoms and ameliorates their splendor through his opulent color palette, filled with cerulean blue, lemon yellow and sunset orange hues, all juxtaposing against her undulating figures’ darkened outlines to create vivacious energy pulsating from the canvas. In her execution exists a centrifugal force driving all figures to swirl and circumnavigate the peripheral borders. This cyclical movement breaks canvas boundaries by symbolizing the cycles of nature, capturing life’s journey for eternity as a wonderful voyage filled with surreal fascination and intrigue.

MARY E. MORGAN MARY E. MORGAN “CHELSEA ARTISTIC VISIONS”

DECEMBER 11, 2015 – FEBRUARY 2, 2016

Jackson Pollock pondered: “The modern artist, it seems to me, is working and expressing an inner world, in other words, expressing the energy, the motion and other inner forces.” Texas-based Mary E. Morgan’s paintings demonstrate this theory by beautifully expressing the progressive shifting, undulating velocity of an internal world. Mary Morgan states: “My artwork is a creative colorful expression of my soul; a reflection of life’s experiences, both inner and outer world influences. It is often a mixture of conscious and subconscious thought; therefore, its intangible rewards continually motivate and stimulate growth in style and process.” Freedom and voracious passion fill each inch of her canvases, invoking the masters of Expressionism while creating something purely and distinctly her own individualistic style, resulting in a full sensory experience in color and motion, making something that is wholly unique to each individual viewer. Not merely recording the world that she sees, but rather recreating the emotions she feels, Mary Morgan expertly balances a varied color palette utilizing color to achieve visual perceptions and emotional responses. By painting color as a sensation, this gifted artist transmits the emotions of life by juxtaposing bright and muted shades to give each image a dynamic flow. Her interest in the unconscious effect of color on mood rings through her work, creating a symphonic feeling of empathy translated into hue. Colors rise and fall and explode with contrasts that are dazzling as she interplays depth, juxtaposition, and light, while the materiality of her paint bursts with coloration, achieving powerful three-dimensional tactility. Radiating a sensory cue, this gifted artist emphasizes that color is not only about seeing, but it is also about feeling, as she entices cognition to experience the colorful canvas both visually, as an external object, and also emotionally as an internal object.

“Where Dreams Are Made” Acrylic with Acrylic Pen on Paper 26” x 34”

Larger than life colors and bold strokes across the canvas capture the true spontaneity of existence and how fluid and exciting the notion of life is. The seemingly shifting expanse of her oeuvre allow them to express multiple emotions at once, making it so the viewer need not choose an emotion, but experience them all in a tour de force of imaginative expression. There is a pure and true wonderment in the arch or angle of a brush stroke, an utter joy in the very act of creation as it flows from the page. Each work is excited to be here, to be displayed for each of us to enjoy and understand as individuals, creating a universal connection of unique beings and reveling in this fact.

GUILLO PEREZ III GUILLO PEREZ III “CHELSEA ARTISTIC VISIONS”

DECEMBER 11, 2015 – FEBRUARY 2, 2016

Edvard Munch proclaimed, “Nature is not only all that is visible to the eye... it also includes the inner pictures of the soul.” Inspired by this credo, Contemporary Master Guillo Perez III blends the fantastical with the real in his magical expressionist, figurative oil on canvas paintings which articulate the vortex of inner visceral human emotions. Channeling his fascination with the figure into dream-like forms, Mr. Perez conjures mystical religious apparitions which create a sense of intrigue and fantasy as they metaphorically transcend the distractions of everyday life. By fusing the classical figurative silhouette with the surreal, his luminescent dreamscapes result in a unique conceptual symbolic synthesis of the human form. European surrealism, expressionism and religious mysticism combine in his expressive figurative artworks, which utilize variegated brushwork to dynamically depict emblematic imagery. Fully imbued with visible metaphors and imaginative subtexts about society, his artwork is sublime in nature. Striking and dramatic, Guillo Perez III’s canvases find inspiration from the everyday world as well as the Bible, and through the use of color, line and symbolic figuration, his narratives synaesthetically rather than visually, represent the appearance of nature. With abstracted figuration that heralds a deeper universal symbolism, his meditative titles, such as “The Rescuer,” brings forth contemporary issues through symbolism. His universal language speaks to relevant human issues as he allows religious symbolism to shine through his painted subjects by transforming the particular into the universal.

“The Rescuers” Oil on Canvas 20” x 16”

The transcending nature of Guillo Perez III’s oeuvre is that color and line play equal roles, fluidly combining into expressive canvases. Within each painting, color is deliberately employed to lend emotive elements to the overall effect, with hues and brushstrokes juxtaposed in unique and intriguing ways to create a visual illusion. Creating luxurious textures in nuanced, lush layers of brilliant hues, light also plays prominently in the dazzling compositions as it illuminates the divine emotional vistas and textural backgrounds. At the heart of Mr. Perez III’s tableaux is a great sense of peace. The overall effect is one of visceral expressionist introspection and aesthetic intrigue that encourages the viewer to contemplate the deep vortex of life. Award-winning artist Guillo Perez III was born in the Dominican Republic and works and resides in New York City. He exhibits his artwork internationally in group and solo shows throughout Europe and the United States. Mr. Perez III’s artwork is treasured in public and private collections worldwide, and Amsterdam Whitney Gallery is proud to showcase the artwork of this contemporary artist.

JOHN PETERS

JOHN PETERS “WONDERS of the INCANDESCENT”

DECEMBER 11, 2015 – FEBRUARY 2, 2016

Inspired by Henri Matisse’s credo: “An artist must possess Nature. He must identify himself with her rhythm, by efforts that will prepare the mastery which will later enable him to express himself in his own language,” John Peters’ magical realism landscape and floral oil paintings reflect his personal visual lexicon which is an homage to the majesty and power of natural terrain. Commemorating nature’s divinity, Mr. Peters immortalizes the permanence of our natural world with his illuminated panoramas and mosaic-hued compositions which transport the viewer into a romantic dialogue with the natural world. Inhaling the beauty of nature and exhaling its joy, this contemporary master creates landscape tableaux with ingenious color and powerful light, as he encapsulates the spiritual essence and dynamism of the terrain. Amidst the zeitgeist of living in a modern world and the gestalt of urbanization, John Peters juxtaposes an expressionistic view of nature while capturing the pulse and tempo of today’s modern landscape. Inspired by both the Post Impressionists, the Fauvists and the German Expressionists, the inner artistic vision of John Peters finds great joy in intermingling the dynamic variations of the ever-changing patterns of nature with a dazzling, visceral, textured color palette. With an exciting sense of drama coupled with visual intensity, Mr. Peters encapsulates the emotions, sensations, and feelings of nature onto the canvas, making them dynamically palpable, bridging the physical world to the spiritual and emotional world of nature. Embodying a pursuit to realize the spirit of the environment, John Peters’ densely textured landscapes and floral works are built from layers of oil paint which metamorphose into tangible visions of water, land, and sky. Whether painting the haunting trees, sky, water or flora of the land, his brightly colored rich landscape tableaux of the natural terrain burst with exciting energy and are suffused with a powerful sense of pattern, color, and shadow as they reflect the many forms and moods of the natural terrain. A hallmark of the oil paintings by John Peters is the visual intensity captured within each image. With bold abandon, John Peters’ signature style skillfully employs stark imagery with unbridled emotional content to create compositions that underscore his visceral feelings towards the external realm. Harmonizing an appreciation of the natural world with a distinct way of depicting it, John Peters’ interpretive realms marry textured powerful, passionate colors with undulating forms which explode to create compositions which capture the many moods of the world. With swirling brushstrokes, his paintings burst from the frame as they evoke a sense of a fevered dream reflecting a powerful surreal fiery sky and forms which mimic the slopes of the waves and land. Existing as large vistas, the various points of illumination allow him to establish distinctive points of view, patterns, and refractions, all of which interact with each other to garner a powerful effect. His personal imprimatur, or his recognizable iconography distinguishes his works from others, resulting in iconic transmutations of nature.

“Autumn Bouquet” Oil on Canvas 24” x 24”

Turning his eye toward nature, John Peters’ inspirational work captures the eternal essence of life and has a spiritual, universal vision that mystically illuminates the timelessness of art with its important visual narrative and its emotional link to nature with the artistic experience. Participating in a lifetime of immersion in the arts, culminating in an outstanding body of work, John Peters has embarked on a painting career which has catapulted him into a meaningful position in the international contemporary art arena. Cultivating a strong reputation in the global art world, John Peters’ artwork is treasured in prestigious international public and private collections for his triumph of personal expression.

ANA TAVERAS ANA TAVERAS “WONDERS of the INCANDESCENT”

DECEMBER 11, 2015 – FEBRUARY 2, 2016

Influenced by Claude Monet who declared: “My eyes were finally opened and I understood nature. I learned at the same time to love it,” Ana Taveras translates nature into her own visual lexicon as she transforms the flora and fauna kingdom into a magical wonderland. Dominican-born, Austrian-based Ana Taveras states: “In my paintings, I try to deal with a critical reflection about nature and plants that have been entrusted to the human.” With the diverse directionality, her oeuvre visually illustrates the temporality and environmental conditions of nature as she explores the effervescent energies and fleeting dynamism of the natural world. Ms. Taveras’ color saturated expressionist paintings create luscious scenes of the external realm which resonate with a fantasia of hues and powerful tones. Anthropomorphic plants and succulent flowers all equally engage visual interest as Ms. Taveras cogently reminds us to always appreciate and treasure our environment. By wondrously embellishing the compositions in her floral paintings, Ms. Taveras exaggerates the shapes of the views to become organically undulating forms which mirror the surrealist glory of nature. Her opulent palette emphasizes the majestic colors of the world in brilliantly saturated hues as she encapsulates the natural light of the sun during a brilliant day. Through various different visual perspectives, Ms. Taveras presents nature’s beauty by simplifying forms to essential investigations of color application. “Lost Flower Beauty” Oil on Canvas 32.68” x 40.55”

Her opulent paintings play with the extraordinary acclivity of nature showing that in all of its organic glory, nature can be positively enhanced through the artist’s trained eye. Her masterful use of saturated hues transform sublime vistas through her organically dynamic brushwork which morphs into wonderfully illustrated scenes beaming with brilliant illumination. In addition to a visual engagement of the sense of sight, her paintings engage a sense of touch, through the thickly textured application of paint. Instead of a realistic photographic representation of nature, Ms. Taveras explores the feeling of nature by emulating the organic texture of natural surfaces. Her composition moves from a distant atmospheric perspective to a cropped close-up. Through multiple perspectives, juxtaposing color palettes, energetic brushstrokes and dense application, Ms. Taveras’ compositions are a visual representation of nature’s dynamism, showing that no single scene is the defining visualization of a natural landscape. Through swirling brushstrokes and organic compositions, Ana Taveras’ billowing expressionist paintings capture visions of earthly delights which radiate superlative color, light and composition, as a kaleidoscopic color palette takes center stage. The incandescent paintings of Ana Taveras result in modern masterpieces which invite the viewer to inhale the divine beauty of nature as they cajole us to honor and respect the extraterrestrial realm.
