5. Share a memorable or funny story from your past, a childhood memory, a favourite vacation, or just a unique experience.

Growing up in Soweto back then, there were two sounds that excited us as kids and brought trauma to parents. First was the ice cream combi with its hypnotising sound that would result in any parent using their last bit of bread money on ice cream instead.

Second one was the most loved one, “Banana Kaar”. Banana Kaar – is a van / bakkie that was used to collect empty bottles for recycling purposes from township kids - this was a simple trade off, empty bottles in exchange for a scoop of cheese curls.

The more bottles given, the more cheese curls you got. The trick was to use your t-shirt to collect your prize. On the day of the Banana Kaar, we all wore the biggest t-shirts we could find so that we could get more cheese curls. The result was that baggy oversized t-shirts became very fashionable.

The mighty Super Poser and its epic superpower—cloning, baby! Picture this: with just a snap of my fingers, I could duplicate myself or anyone else. It’s like having my own personal army of clones at my beck and call. Need to juggle a gazillion tasks at once? No sweat! I’ll just clone myself a dozen times over and watch the chaos unfold in glorious HD. Got a project that needs the perfect team?

Easy peasy! I’ll clone those specific skill sets faster than you can say “Llew dependency,” and bam! Instant dream team, ready to conquer the world, one line of code at a time. And the joy of spending time with loved ones who live far away! Thanks to the Super Poser, distance becomes as irrelevant as yesterday’s news. I’ll just clone myself, hop on a plane, and presto! Quality time with Aunt Mabel in Timbuktu, or a cozy dinner with pals in Paris—no passport required. The possibilities are as vast as the universe itself. With the Super Poser, I could be everywhere and do everything, all at once. Who needs sleep when you’ve got clones, right?

5. Share a memorable or funny story from your past, a childhood memory, a favourite vacation, or just a unique experience.

The most cringe-worthy moment of my life, and the reason why skirts and office chairs are mortal enemies in my book. Picture this: I’m at my previous job, and we’re knee-deep in a severity 1 system issue. The tension in the air is so thick you could cut it with a knife. Fingers are being pointed faster than you can say “tech support.” I decide enough is enough; it’s time to gather the troops and have a serious chat. Let me set the scene: it’s me, the lone lady boss, surrounded by my team leads—all men, all suited up, all business. I’m feeling like the queen of the office, ready to lay down the law and get this mess sorted. So, there I am, in my trusty office chair, trying to keep a straight face while I deliver my “let’s get down to business” speech. But little did I know, my skirt had plans of its own. As I stand up—full of authority, mind you—my skirt decides it’s the perfect time to cozy up to the chair wheels. The next thing I know, I’m on my feet, and my skirt? Well, let’s just say it decided to stay back for a little solo performance. Cue the awkward silence. The room freezes. My team leads, bless their souls, try to salvage the situation with a collective “We didn’t see a thing,” but the look on their faces said it all. It was a sight no one could unsee. Needless to say, the arguments ceased, and miraculously, the system issue got resolved faster than you could say “wardrobe malfunction.” But oh boy, did the story spread like wildfire. From that day forward, I became known as the office legend—the one who bravely sacrificed her dignity for the greater good of tech support. And as for wearing skirts to work? Let’s just say I’ll stick to pants from now on. You never know when those office chairs might strike again.

4. If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

I think Magneto’s power is quite interesting. Although he is considered one of the “bad guys”, and I certainly don’t associate with that, the ability to control and manipulate metal does appeal to me as quite unique and interesting. I also think it has a lot of practical applications in daily life. Stuck in traffic? No problem, just move the cars out of your way. Need to change a tyre next to the road, no problem… happens in an instant. Locked yourself out of your house… just pick the lock with your mind. The possibilities are endless!

5. Share a memorable or funny story from your past, a childhood memory, a favourite vacation, or just a unique experience.

I once had the opportunity to go for an aerobatics flip in a 300 Extra - the planes used in the Red Bull air races where they fly at high speed through the pylons. We did rolls, loops and various crazy things, but the best of all was pulling 6G without a pressure suit – and handling it like a boss!

6. Share three statements about yourselves – two truths and one lie.

1. Many moons ago, on the way to an interview, someone cut me off quite badly in traffic. Things were said and signals shown but as it turned out, this was the guy interviewing me. He politely let me finish my coffee, but fair to say, I did not get the job!

2. One time, a guy was annoyed at me taking too long to go after the light turned green. He sped along next to me, opened his passenger window, yelled, screamed, and swore. Just then, he hit a stationary car who had stopped to turn right. He was so focussed on me that he did not pay attention to what was in front of him.

3. Not too long ago, on the way to the office, I was speeding quite a bit. The next thing, I see highway patrol in my rearview mirror. Completely distraught, I slowed down and moved over, expecting a massive fine, if not worse. To my surprise, they pulled up next to me, two young guys, smiling and signalling to race them. It was awesome! Weaving and bobbing through traffic and at one stage reaching speeds well over 200!!

Most of my favourite memories involve my family, but this was a friend thing: I had it easy during COVID-19 compared to most, for which I’m very grateful, but I still hated that period in our lives. Two of the things I missed most were being able to get together with friends, and being able to travel, which is one of my favourite things. One of my best friends, living in London, lost his wife to Cancer in January 2021, and it was heartbreaking to not be able to see and support him over the time leading up to that, as well as the time after her passing. I was stuck here in SA, with all the lockdown, mask wearing, social distancing etc. My favourite song of the time was “Closing Time” by Supersonic, as it reminded me of being out in a cosy pub, drinking and having fun with friends.

Once hope for a return to normal was ushered in by the vaccines, thoughts turned to a trip overseas. However, my wife wouldn’t be able to travel with me because of a clash with my son’s school terms at the time. Then one day she just said to me, “Grant, why don’t you go and visit Graeme? I’ll take care of Dan, and you go and see your friend.”

She didn’t need to ask twice, and I made the arrangements, ending up travelling together with another friend, and with Graeme’s brother. In February 2022 we were still wearing masks in SA, and there were still reduced social distancing measures in place, but England had dropped it all by then. We still had to wear masks on the plane, but once in London, it was the most liberating thing to suddenly not have to wear a mask. Hugging my friend when we landed was one of the most special moments, as well as seeing him reunited with his brother, who he also hadn’t seen through this whole terrible time. We got the best fish & chips ever for lunch that day and went to Spurs stadium to watch a football game. That weekend we headed up to Edinburgh by train, where Scotland had just dropped restrictions effective the day we arrived. It was a Friday, and we ended up in a quintessential Scottish pub, teaming with atmosphere and locals enjoying their newly recovered freedom. We had another 3 friends from the UK with us on that trip too. There was a one-man band playing, with the seven of us and the rest of the pub singing along, beer in one hand and the other on someone else’s shoulder. When the singer called “closing time” on his act, we simply paid him to play longer, as we merrily cherished one of the best evenings of our lives.

I would choose the power of being able to see a persons soul instead of their body. Our world is so caught up in physicality, that we often miss out on seeing and focusing on a person’s inner beauty.  People are mainly judged on their physical appearance, when there is so much more intriguing stuff within, that we do not give time to notice – a pretty mind, heart & soul.

However, I do believe that sharing one more meal with my dad would be truly life changing. It would be an honour to be able to chat to him now, as the adult that I am. While I was on my way home, explaining the ordeal on the phone to my parents, I realised that I had in fact committed a crime, by driving away.

Apparently, saying sorry is not sufficient in these sorts of circumstances, even though he only had a few bruises and a minor limp. What’s the statute of limitations on this sort of thing? #askingforafriend

My hubby and I were dating at the time and I was invited to a kids birthday party or something, after the kiddies party, a few of us decided we wanted to go out for a drink or two. We ended up at this place called the HoutHuis, which literally started out as a little bar inside a wendy house that as it grew, just kept getting pieces added to it. As my hubby got to the bar, they gave him an umbrella because the roof didn’t join up, so right where you stood to order, the rain was pouring through the groove.
