Interior design should be dramatic not traumatic — that’s the long-standing motto of the Blair team. Wanting to create a drop-dead environment without getting killed in the process is why many hire interior designers in the first place. It takes talent and experience to be able to assess and reflect each client’s unique personality and needs. Linda Blair, ASID, a longtime Scarsdalian, continues to offer great designs for kitchens, baths, furnishings, cabinetry and lighting — for spaces and budgets both large and small. Your style becomes “Blairstyle.” Whether that’s contemporary or a mixed transitional style, the choices are wide and varied. Expect unparalleled workrooms, expert tradespeople and hands-on supervision. Expect more than you expected.

They design the room in the client’s own lighting including existing furnishings the client may want to keep. “Working this way is very comfortable for the client, as they can really see what works in the room, plus it’s a time-saving convenience,” Marina says. Marina and her team pride themselves on their ability to work within a client’s budget, custom designing rooms for function, beauty and comfort. “My clients are working directly with a knowledgeable decorator who is a smallbusiness owner with the power of a large, established company behind her. Unlike a store, we have no inventory or loyalty to a particular manufacturer. We listen to our clients and put their needs first as we make our choices from hundreds of vendors.” We are ready to help our clients with everything from dressing one window to a full-home makeover. Call for a complimentary 90-minute consultation. Decorating Den is expanding in Westchester. If you are interested in getting into the design business, please call us for career opportunities.

Choosing a nursery school is a major decision for parents of young children. You want your youngsters to experience the enrichment and socialization that a wellconceived program can provide. At the same time, you want your children to be cared for by a staff of competent, experienced and loving teachers who understand how to respond to a preschool child’s thirst for knowledge and fun. Generations of parents have chosen the Early Childhood Center at the JCC of Mid-Westchester. At this well-equipped center, children from 17 months to 5 years are steeped in an atmosphere that provides tools to inspire creativity, learning, independence and joy. Children participate in age-appropriate educational activities, including gym and gymnastics, swimming, nature study, music, creative movement, cooking, science and math, literature, world cultures, and more. The quality of the staff sets this school apart. All are experienced early childhood teachers, many with master’s degrees, all supervised by directors Caryn Symons and Nancy Kaplan. Children love it here. Early Childhood Center hours: Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with early drop-off and after-care options. Hours: The JCC is open seven days a week.

If you’re considering a new hair color, why not go green? OK, not literally — we’re talking about organic hair coloring. We’re certified colorists with Organic Color Systems, a line of ammonia-free coloring products that are better for both the environment and your hair. For hair color to be permanent, it needs to contain something that opens the cuticle so the dye penetrates the hair shaft. Organic hair dye contains an oil that, when combined with heat, opens the cuticle just enough for the dye to permeate, but doesn’t make the hair appear dull. When a surface is straight, it reflects light better, so when the cuticles are opened too much (as can happen with ammonia-based products), the hair cuticles are not as straight — and the shine is diminished. Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday to 7 p.m.

4 color Lyn Peterson, designer and Liam Winters, architect Diane Forley

After a career in the New York City restaurant business, including a successful run at Verbena Restaurant, chef Diane Forley relocated to Westchester to start a new business manufacturing healthy foods and snacks. The result? Flourish Baking Company, located in the “industrial section” of Scarsdale. The enterprise illuminates Diane’s approach to plant-based cooking and baking, highlighted by beans and legumes, seeds, nuts, organic flours and grains, and healthy plant fats like avocado and coconut oils in place of animal fats like butter. Flourish offers a healthier way to eat and snack. By day, the kitchen bakes, packs and ships edibles for wholesale distribution — black bean veggie burgers, vegan cookies, gluten-free bread, and a healthy snack line of toasted seeds nuts, grains and spices. (All items sold business-to-business are available to the public in the store showroom.) Evenings and weekends, the kitchen transforms into an event and private party space, ideal for mid-sized events from cooking-class parties to intimate chef’s table dinners featuring four-course menus. Hours: Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., private events on weekends.

For decades, Eye Designs of Westchester has been the place to go in Scarsdale for stylish eyewear, and is a proud staple of Scarsdale’s rich fashion culture. In fact, owner Sharon Decker was recently featured on WCBS-AM’s “Small Business Report with Joe Connolly,” where she discussed the secrets to business longevity in the high-tech, online consumer buying market. From the beginning, the goal of Sharon and her friendly, professional staff was to bring high-quality fashion eyewear to Westchester. It has always been about removing the stigmas associated with wearing glasses, whether as a kid or adult, and making you feel great about yourself. All these years later, eyewear styles may have changed, but some things haven’t changed at all: Eye Designs is still Westchester’s favorite eyeglasses shop, and Sharon and her staff are as committed as ever to helping you and your family see clearly — and look great, too! Like us on Facebook or rate us on Yelp by searching for Eye Designs of Westchester. Hours: Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday to 7 p.m., Saturday to 5 p.m. Eye examinations and contact lens fittings by appointment.

Cindy Guilianti and Alison Comas, owner

Remember The Curtain Exchange, the place to shop for window treatments, fabrics and shades? Now, new owner Alison Comas is bringing 30 years of expertise, top brand names in merchandise, and interior design options to the shop, to help customers freshen up all the rooms in their homes — from reupholstering and floor plans to wallpapers, fabrics and hardware, even kitchen and bath tiles and fixtures. The trend in interior design is neutrals, Alison says — particularly grays and taupes. Lighter looks with small finials to adorn thin metal poles complement the subdued color palette. Many of our local neighborhoods reflect 1920s Tudor and Georgian colonial styles, and the shop’s designers are particularly adept at transitioning vintage home design to the latest leanings in décor. Many clients prefer incremental updates to whole-house undertakings, and this wise plan avoids mistakes and contains costs, Alison says. Classic Curtains & Interiors: now the place for all your decorating needs. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and by appointment evenings and Monday afternoons.

eth El Synagogue Center welcomes all who seek a full range of spiritual, educational, social and recreational activities. Its vibrant and thriving community features individuals, couples and families of all ages who come from different and varied religious backgrounds and levels of faith. Centrally located in New Rochelle, Beth El is open to anyone in the Westchester area and is easily reached from towns throughout the county. Rabbi David A. Schuck emphasizes an egalitarian approach to building community in an open, nonjudgmental way, instilling curiosity in people about one another and the journeys that they share, regardless of one’s background or prior religious choices. “We’re invested in helping individuals and families find ways that Judaism can enrich their lives and be meaningful,” Rabbi Schuck says. “Our Shabbat services, High Holy Days, educational programs and social activities form the heart of the strong and supportive community we share together.” Beth El’s community-centered role in supplementing one’s religious

experiences on Shabbat and the High Holy Days is part of the excitement. Beth El has it all — from Baby U, for new parents and their youngsters, to nursery school, day camp, religious school, and children’s and teen programs, all the way up to a full range of adult education and social activities. “Stop in any time and get to know us at Beth El Synagogue,” Rabbi Schuck says, inviting those who are currently unaffiliated, haven’t been to Beth El recently, might be looking for something different in their religious lives, or even those who have a hard time seeing how religion can have a role in their lives. Programs are open to all regardless of affiliation. “We’re happy to meet you and offer Beth El as a place where anyone can feel free to establish communities of trust, open up to one another, and feel at home,” he says. “There’s a lot of excitement and energy here, and together, we have the opportunity to shape the way synagogues are being reimagined for the future.” Hours: Visit Beth El Synagogue Center’s website to learn about worship services, activities, programs and more. Our menu features hearty, well-prepared pub fare, offering appetizers, salads, burgers and sandwiches, plus a full bar menu featuring an excellent selection of bottled and tap beers, wines and cocktails. We also feature pastas, steaks, chicken, pork and seafood dishes with Italian, American and international flair. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant features plenty of parking, indoor and outdoor dining with flat-screen TVs, and catering for large and small groups. It’s a great place to watch the game with friends while enjoying a great meal and golf course view. We like to think of ourselves as Scarsdale’s friendly, neighborhood bar and grill. Open seven days a week, Saxon Grill, is an ideal choice for family dining, takeout and catering services.

f you live in and around Scarsdale, you know Lange’s Deli & Pizzeria — an institution in the Village Center for more than four decades. This is where the regulars go for great food and the friendly faces of Sal, the coffee barista; Theresa and Gilly, the salad ladies; and the sandwich and hot plate guys — all of them keeping the line moving for breakfast orders, lunch and dinner specials, snack treats, and great service at affordable prices. Two years ago, Lange’s expanded its deli menu to include pizza and family-style dinners. Enrique and Tomas take pride in creating the specialty pizzas and classic Italian dishes that keep customers coming back for more. Even designer pizzas are no problem for these chefs. However you want it is how you get it. In addition to the tasty foods and excellent customer service, Lange’s patrons appreciate the restaurant’s commitment to the Scarsdale community — its donations of apple cider and doughnuts for the Halloween window painting contest; s’mores and hot chocolate at the holiday tree lighting event; and free pizzas to local students showing a good report card. Lange’s also sponsors a local baseball team, donates to local clubs and teams, and contributes to all the elementary school barbecues. Deli owners Anthony and Sofia Domini have a goal: to serve your family, your grandchildren, and your extended family for at least another four decades. Lange’s Deli & Pizzeria: An adventure in food. Hours: Open seven days a week. Sunday through Tuesday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday to 8 p.m. Pizza from 11 a.m. to closing.

Andrea Verdeschi has lived, loved and breathed dance since she was a young girl, and now, with Miss Andrea’s Dance Studio in Scarsdale, she gives children, teens and adults the chance to have fun and learn ballet and other dance skills in a professional setting. The best part of teaching is having the privilege of watching a young child’s love of dance grow and to see children mature into amazing dancers, says Andrea. “We’re teaching ballet, tap, jazz, ballroom dancing and hip-hop to the next generation of dancers, and we offer classes geared for anyone from a beginner just getting started to competition-level performers.” Featuring a loving, positive atmosphere, Miss Andrea’s Dance Studio has relatively small class sizes, enabling professional teachers to give extra attention while infusing an element of fun into the instruction. Older, more-seasoned students are encouraged and motivated to improve skills and be the best they can be. All students may participate in a low-stress yearly recital, showing family and friends their self-confidence and improved dance skills. Hours: Call or check their website for class schedule and studio hours.

very homeowner wants a beautiful green lawn, one that graces the home it surrounds and offers a refined welcome to residents and guests. The ways to a beautiful lawn are sunlight and irrigation. Mother Nature supplies the sun, and as homeowners from New Canaan south to Riverdale and west to the Hudson River know, Evermist Lawn Sprinklers is the go-to company for irrigation. Richard Gasparino started the company more than a quarter century ago, based on his knowledge of irrigation systems and the watering requirements of various grasses, shrubs, flowers and trees. Technological innovations have had a major impact on water efficiency, which saves homeowners money, and also protects our natural resource. Evermist staff attends classes and consults with our suppliers to bring new ideas and designs to our industry, which puts us on the cutting edge of water efficiency and cost savings for our homeowners and commercial customers. Since the beginning, the company has grown to include up to 18 workers during the height of the growing season, five service trucks, and a headquarters building in Port Chester. Joining Richard in the company are his two sons, Richard Jr. and Dominick; his mother-in-law, Sylvia DeGiacomo, as office manager; and his wife, April, as chief financial officer. Whatever your family’s irrigation needs — underground systems, drainage, well-water systems, iron and sand elimination systems, residential and commercial — you will be glad you spoke to our family at Evermist Lawn Sprinklers. ow celebrating its 11th anniversary, Buddy’s Barking Lot moved and expanded its services in the past 12 months. Having perfected doggie day care in its first decade, Buddy’s is now a full-service dog facility, including a canine hotel open every day of the year! As with its day care, Buddy’s hotel is crate- and cage-free, so dogs sleep only on couches and beds. Two staff members sleep alongside them, making sure everyone’s happy, healthy and wakes up ready to greet the new day. Safety is of utmost importance at Buddy’s. “We interview every dog that comes to us, ensuring they can be successful members of the pack,” says Eileen Fleming, co-owner with Susan Ekaireb. “There’s an incredible amount of trust among the dogs and staff, and aggression is not tolerated.” In addition to the hotel and day care, Buddy’s offers group or private training classes. There’s also a private self-wash dog wash room. “Come in to wash and blow-dry your dog using professional equipment — there’s no need to get your house messy,” says Eileen. Professional grooming’s another option. Buddy’s Barking Lot’s mission since day one has been to create joy for dogs and their people. Eileen and Susan invite you to see just how happy you and your dog can be! Hours: Open every day of the year. Visit the website for details.

Throughout its 72-year history, Westchester Jewish Community Services has provided nonsectarian services to youth with social and educational challenges, people with mental health issues, individuals with disabilities, and older adults wishing to stay in their homes. As the agency says, “If you have an issue, we likely have a way to help.” One such program is the Wiener Academy for Young Women at the Mary J. Blige Center in Yonkers. Here, under the supervision of youth development director Ebony Carelock, girls in grades four through eight can join an after-school and/ or summer program that offers homework help and encourages them to explore their talents and interests. The program strives to prepare girls to reach their full potential through academic support and activities designed to build character and enhance social development. In the process, they acquire a sense of their own worth and esteem. Also offered as part of the program are empowerment workshops that help parents learn tools to support their children. Want to help? Ebony is always looking for volunteers to help with homework as well as the enrichment programs. Program hours: Monday through Friday, from 3 to 6 p.m.

e love animals at Petchester Veterinary — they are our first love and first priority. But, we go beyond loving them since our role as veterinarians is to ensure their health, comfort, and quality of life. Drs. Lester Sills and Zsach Ben Adi are seasoned practitioners with more than four decades of combined clinical and surgical experience. Their skills and professional ethics enable them to practice medicine efficiently and cost-effectively. We’re a friendly, small-animal practice offering concierge-like services tailored to individual needs and constraints. Petchester takes pride in providing “collaborative care” where we, together, make the right decisions for the health of your pet. We treat all types of patients: dogs, cats, birds, reptiles and “pocket” pets like ferrets, rabbits and rodents. Petchester is a newly built, modern, fully equipped hospital built from the “pawprint” of an Italian restaurant. You will be comfortable as soon as you walk through the door, with separate waiting areas for dogs and cats/exotics. There’s an airy, open reception and waiting area with nostalgic animal photos, and our staff is equally open and friendly. At Petchester, we realize medicine is also an art and requires experienced professionals with strong clinical know-how who use their experience to make fast, life-and-death decisions while utilizing state-of-the-art equipment. On-site services include urgent care, complete pet pharmacy, clinical laboratory, digital radiography, ultrasound, modern surgical suite, animal dentistry, chemotherapy, medical boarding, and grooming. Hours: Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday by appointment.

helps Memorial Hospital Center’s primary and specialty care medical group, Phelps Medical Associates, was established to give people throughout the region convenient access to quality care from Phelps physicians, right in their own community. What makes Phelps Medical Associates unique is its physicians — a group dedicated to making patients feel that they are the No. 1 priority. Medical care is expert and thorough, patients don’t feel rushed during visits, and they are given ample opportunity to ask questions and express concerns about their health. The doctors are known for their quick follow-up with test results and appropriate referrals to specialists when necessary. For patients who are having difficulty managing their medications, Phelps Medical Associates offers in-person or phone consultations with a pharmacist. In a recent patient satisfaction survey, Phelps Medical Associates received a score of 93 percent, demonstrat-

ing how pleased patients are with the quality, personalized care they receive. In the coming months, the Phelps Medical Associates physicians in Dobbs Ferry will move to newly created medical office space in the shopping center on Ashford Avenue, above Walgreens. The more spacious suite will make it possible to accommodate additional medical specialists and services in Dobbs Ferry. In addition to primary care (internal medicine and family medicine), there will be physicians who specialize in cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology and obstetrics/gynecology. Phelps radiology services will also be available in the new Dobbs Ferry location. The Phelps radiology department has been designated a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology — a distinction achieved by only 17 other hospitals in the U.S. Radiology services offered in Dobbs Ferry will include 3-D mammography, bone densitometry, ultrasound, breast ultrasound and diagnostic X-ray.

hy does a toothache always develop when your regular dental practice is closed? Why does a tooth break on a Sunday? Emergencies never happen when it’s convenient. Urgent Care Dental, located at 1088 Central Park Avenue in Scarsdale, is the answer to this dilemma. Scarsdale resident Dr. Scott Loeser opened Urgent Care Dental to offer after-hours care to all in need of immediate attention for dental emergencies. No appointments are necessary. Walk-ins are welcome. This state-of-the-art, green, dental facility is staffed by board-certified dentists and a professional team experienced in emergency dentistry, who provide emergency dental services for children and adults, seven days a week. The office can handle broken or knocked-out teeth, abscessed teeth, tooth pain, oral or tooth infections, injuries to the mouth and lips, lost fillings or crowns, and problems following dental work. Previously, those with dental emergencies would need to wait for an appointment with their dentists or head to a hospital emergency room, which oftentimes is ill equipped to handle dental issues. A resource for patients and dentists alike, Urgent Care Dental serves the public by providing a place for people to get the care they need — when they need it. Coming soon, a second location in Riverdale. Urgent Care Dental: When it just can’t wait. Hours: Monday through Friday, from 4 to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Anna Krosche

It’s the call every mother dreads: “Your child has head lice.” No worries. Anna Albano-Krosche, the Lice Lady of Westchester, can come to the rescue 365 days a year, “because lice is always an emergency.” Anna is Westchester’s original head lice removal expert. “I’ve been in business since 1998, and I’ve treated over 10,000 heads,” says Anna. She is the area’s only lice removal specialist with a freestanding salon. She also makes house calls. Anna frequently travels to schools and camps to do lice checks and to give presentations on head lice prevention. “I’ve been through this with my own children and myself, and I relate 100 percent to everybody who comes in,” she says. A client’s head is examined under a magnification light, then is given a 20minute, all-natural enzyme-based shampoo. Nits are combed from the hair, then the hair is rinsed, blown dry and rechecked. Clients leave the salon with a homework sheet, including instructions on how to “delouse your house.”

aking care of your furry friend just got a whole lot easier. Kim Lajca, owner of Primp My Paws Pet Salon (PMP), has partnered with Jenn Valentin, owner of Smoochie Poochies, to take the stress out of caring for your pet. PMP is a full-service dog grooming salon that operates by appointment only, one dog at a time, ensuring individualized care at all times. All clients are given a consultation and then the grooming begins. “They’re not sitting in a cage for hours, so our dogs are calmer with lower stress and anxiety levels,” says Kim. Services range from pawdicures (nail trim) to haircuts. Grooming products are all-natural and of professional grade. Kim educates her clients on caring for pets at home and is a firm believer in “humanity over vanity.” Getting your pet to the groomer can be a hassle, which is where Smoochie Poochies (SP) can help. Jenn and her staff offer a pet concierge service (pick up and drop off) that will get your pet to its destination — the groomer or vet — when you can’t. In addition, SP offers cage-free, in-home boarding with host families. Playgroups and daily walks are also on the menu. Playgroup includes pickup and drop-off services and a one-hour supervised romp at private runs and dog parks. Both Primp My Paws and Smoochie Poochies believe that an exercised, clean pup is a happy pup! Hours: Primp My Paws: By appointment only, Tuesday through Saturday; Smoochie Poochies: Call for availability.

With an atmosphere of discovery and charm, Suburban Renewal offers an eclectic mix of antique furniture and collectibles from the 1800s to midcentury modern, as well as certified fair-trade items handcrafted by artisans’ groups from around the world. The shop, which opened in 2002, has consignors as well as dealers — which means the inventory is ever-changing — with new arrivals every day! It’s a fabulous destination to browse aimlessly, where you can discover an affordable trinket or a rare treasure — an ideal place to find unusual gifts and unique home furnishings. The store also maintains a “wish list” for collectors looking for specific, hard-tofind items. Suburban Renewal offers two floors loaded with fun finds, period and vintage furniture, and unexpected treasures. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, with consignors, dealers, designers and dogs always welcome! The prices are affordable, and MasterCard, Visa, Discover and layaway are accepted. Design services available. Delivery can be arranged. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., open most Sunday afternoons (call first). Visit us on Facebook at Suburban Renewal Antiques.

Darren T. Scala opened D. Thomas Fine Miniatures to share his passion for miniatures with his community and to raise awareness of the decorative art form. The shop, located in the Moviehouse Mews, has been a gift for enthusiasts, hobbyists and collectors needing a local source; it has also drawn interest from the general public, eager to learn about the discipline. “Miniatures have been around since the days of the pharaohs,” Scala says. “They are quite alluring and seductive.” In addition to the retail segment of the business (in-store and online), the proprietor offers workshops and classes, and also invites other artists to mount exhibits in his gallery. Visitors will find artisan dollhouses, of course — scaled 1:12 (one foot miniaturized to one inch) — plus collectibles to appeal to a broad range of interests. For instance, how about a grouping of tiny copper pots for a chef or home cook? Or intricately stitched accessories for a designer? Or a personalized shadowbox assortment — the perfect holiday gift? Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., evenings by appointment.

here do I start? This question is on the minds of many people searching for direction in their professional lives: recent college graduates, armed with a degree and few leadership skills; young people with ideas about a business, but lacking the entrepreneurship to launch it; women having raised a family and now transitioning into the business world; people looking toward midlife career changes. Answers for many have been found at Purpl, located in the original St. Stanislaus Church in Hastings, and now transformed into an enrichment and performance space. The space itself, which encourages introspection and reflection, facilitates workshops with nationally recognized experts to spur creativity, direction, discussion and peer networking in a stimulating co-workspace environment. Live events in the music venue have hosted a diverse range of performers, like Shawn Colvin, Sean Rowe, Vieux Farka Touré, and Red Baraat — the common theme being a powerful audience experience. Sarah Hinawi, whose concept for Purpl grew from her training in college and career planning, opened Purpl with her husband, Adel Hinawi, four years ago, and has seen the membership grow steadily — largely as a result of the stimulating offerings toward career development, such as lunch meetings for members, one-on-one counseling, and peer mentorship groups. As Sarah explains, the name Purpl, without the final “e,” is purposely unfinished, like many clients seeking possibilities, empowerment and selfdirection. “We are the incubator from which to build an enriching life,” she says. Business and co-workspace hours: Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with special events and live performances in the evening.

Voted 2015’s Best New Fashion-Forward Boutique by Westchester magazine’s readers, Catherine H. continues to bring European flair to Westchester. Proudly entering its third holiday season in Katonah, Catherine H. has happily settled in to the neighborhood, among the other fabulously unique specialty shops and boutiques. Catherine approaches buying for the boutique as an art; she follows her senses and what inspires her. Refusing to conform to trends, Catherine keeps her customers in mind during her buying and adheres to a simple philosophy: wardrobes should consist of a few well-tailored core items, with a sprinkling of specialty items and accessories. No longer are the days of work versus play clothes. We offer seasonal collections of individually selected basics and specialty items that are intended to transition from day into night. Mostly manufactured in the U.S. — Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Maine and New York — we also feature international lines from Canada, Spain, Italy and France. This season, we play with proportions, unexpected lines, patterns, colors, and textures, while juxtaposing utilitarian style with tailored, feminine classics. Hours: Open seven days a week. inner with a loved one in the soft glow of candlelight is the essence of romance. Custom Candle Co. offers the allure of candlelight, and also imparts the science behind it — the differences among paraffin and soy wax; how the length of the wick alters the luminous intensity of the light; how the mood changes according to the translucence and color of the container. Custom Candle Co., owned by Marcie Manfredonia and her son, Anthony Desideri, stocks a huge variety of candles produced by the world’s finest candlemakers, including Lafco, Archipelago, Believe, Marianne Guedin Paris and other brands carried in luxury stores like Nordstrom and Saks. The idea for designer candles came from Anthony, who began cutting down high-end liquor bottles and repurposing them into another life, including candles, ashtrays, and vases, among other items. How about a candle in the bottom half of a Dom Perignon bottle? Choose your wax color, wick, scent and container for a custom candle sure to please a gift recipient. Other shop offerings include soaps, bath salts, and reed diffusers. For the holidays, Marcie is creating gift baskets of candles, soaps and all-natural bath salts, plus special order arrangements by request. Stop by and create a mood with candlelight. Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday during the holidays, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

hat would you call a shop that benefits people wanting to donate high-quality merchandise for a tax donation? What would you call a shop that benefits consigners of valuable merchandise in exchange for cash? What would you call a shop that auctions this merchandise, benefitting bidders with great prices, often at a fraction of the original cost? What would you call a shop that benefits people looking for designer pieces impossible to find elsewhere? And what would you call a shop that uses its profits to benefit community charities? Pam Stone and her colleagues, Patti Hogan and Beth Romski, call it The Benefit Shop — and you will, too — when you see the merchandise that passes through the doors of the 8,000-squarefoot gallery and auction house: Early American, Victorian, midcentury modern furniture; antiques; collectibles; decorative arts; china, crystal, sterling silver, designer fashions, jewelry in precious metals set with diamonds and gemstones; and fine art. Each auction of hundreds of items, held about every three weeks, is “a trip around the world and through the decades,” says Pam Stone. Price range? Anywhere from $20 to $20,000, she says. About seven years ago, Pam left a career in investment banking to start a thrift shop in her neighborhood. That success morphed into an auction house, which now has become The Benefit Shop. Soon, the original thrift shop will move into the gallery building as a buy-it-now area stocked with auction leftovers. Want to be involved as a consigner, donator or bidder? Check the website www.thebenefitshop. org for instructions, dates and paperwork — and prepare to be amazed. Office hours: Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

he Scarsdale real estate market hums along. During a year of worldwide uncertainty, the median single-family sales price in the village has remained strong, dipping barely 3 percent since last year, with the fourth quarter still to come and many deals in the pipeline. Houlihan Lawrence’s share of dollar volume has grown to 50.85 percent, making it the only company in the top five to grow market share. For this, the company credits the sales team of 90 agents in the Scarsdale office, whose superior market expertise, high-level support and exceptional service create a peerless combination bolstering Houlihan’s role as the leading brokerage in New York City’s northern suburbs. Founded in Westchester, Houlihan Lawrence is built upon 125 years of family tradition and its commitment to exceeding expectations in every aspect of the real estate process. The firm ranks among the top 15 of all brokerages nationally and achieved a total sales volume of more than $5 billion in 2014. It has an extensive regional and global network with longstanding, international connections to partners in 56 countries.

The Scarsdale team is one of the largest of any branch office of Houlihan Lawrence, which has achieved substantial growth this year. The company continued its expansion into Connecticut, and its intuitive website was the only brokerage site in the world to be honored by the Webby Awards in 2015. The firm excels at bespoke client service and rolling out the latest in innovation. Additional tools offered include a sophisticated mobile app, available for iOS and Android, and Updater, a tool that revolutionizes the often tedious change-ofaddress process. As a locally rooted company, Houlihan Lawrence is also deeply committed to giving back to the communities in which it serves. It participates in numerous local events and greatly contributes to charitable causes, including the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer at Manhattanville College, Light the Night Walks in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and MS Walks in Westchester and Putnam, and many others.
