PUNJAB UNIVERSITY LIBRARY & INFORMATION SCIENCE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION’S QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER ISSN: 2O79-4037

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK: DON’T LET IT FALL “Are you a member of PULISAA? I asked a fresh graduate of DLIS PU. His reply was, No, what is PULISAA? I have heard this name first time. On the other hand, a senior professional and life member of PULSAA, working in a prestigious organization was not ready to accept the existence of PULISAA. He was still living in the era of old PULSAA and could not believe that PULSAA had been revived and renamed. Do these two little incidents not reflect our “devotion and “ sincerity towards our alumni association as a community at large? Alas, how much we are far away from the concept of collective interest. Associations are the asset of any profession and they carry a broader and greater purpose of national interest. But, unfortunately, people join these bodies with meager personal concerns. These authority seeking persons need these associations for photo session, strength of CV and delusive fame. Theses indivduals never think that an association needs volunteer approach of sacrificing one’s time and money. They take oath in the presence of dozens individuals and then forget what they promise. On the contrary, professional colleagues are not ready to get memberships because they think associations are not worth paying for them. The question is that if they are not even willing to get Rs. 200’s membership fee, why are they expecting benefits from these associations. They don’t want to think that people working for them are not paid for their services. They are only supposed to sacrifice their family time and sometimes their money too. Folks, we need to reconsider our attitudes towards our associations. We will have to be more positive to save them from fall. We dedicate this issue to our worthy teacher, Dr. Khalid Mahmood who has left Pakistan to join Damam University as . Info@PULISAA conducted “Best Author Awards 2013 competition in the last quarter. The two winning articles are being included in this issue. We hope that professionals will like our efforts. Take good care of yourself and remember us in your prayers. Advance Eid Mubarak from Info@PULISAA to you and your families. See you in next quarter!

The Rise of Fluffy Computing & Libraries

Amna Farzand Ali Librarian University of Central Punjab, Lahore (First Prize Winner of Best Author Award of Info@PULISAA 2013)

The emerging trends of technology have become the part of our discussions and debates not only in profit oriented organizations but also in nonprofit organizations like librarianship. All these emerging technologies have a great impact on all professions of life, this information and technological revolution has changed the working patterns and services models of the libraries around the world. This technology revolution has brought paradigm shift in libraries form brick to bytes, this also has changed the attitude of library patrons now. Library users are more tech savvy they expect efficient and effective services.

Amna Farzand Ali

Cloud computing (CC) is also an emerging technological trend not only in Pakistan but also around the world. It is gaining popularity for the provision of better services among different professions. In many countries, various libraries and library consortiums are rapidly adopting CC for better services.

According to Pew Internet Trust “Fluffy (Cloud Computing) is a phrase that is being used today to describe the act of sharing, accessing and storing data, applications and computer power in cyber space.”National institute of standards and technology (NIST) defines as “A model for enabling configurable computing resources (e.g. networks, servers, storage, applications and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or services provider interaction.” Basically cloud computing (CC) has five essential characteristics which can be divided as three services models as SaaS , PaaS and IaaS and two major access types of cloud computing such as public cloud and private cloud that can be further typed as community cloud and hybrid cloud. SaaS stands for (Software as a service). In SaaS environment user use an application via hosted services or access it through the web browsers. In this service model the userS of specific application cannot access its underlying infrastructure (such as network or server elements) or are not responsible for managing the underlying software. For libraries understanding the relevant example of SaaS can be the subscription of electronics journals databases. All those libraries who have subscription services of these databases know that they can use them only on service level. Their access rights don’t allow making any kind of changes PaaS (Platform as a services) existing software platform. In PaaS modweb application without installing any maximum changing capabilities by the any kind of specialized system admin-

services model of cloud computing is an el, the consumer of this model can build tool on their own computer and have services provider or can handle it without istration skills.

IaaS(Infrastructure as a service) can refer to accessing servers, storage and other hardware housed in data center. The consumer of this service cannot manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure but responsible for maintaining operating systems and can do installing and monitoring operating systems and possibly limited control on selected network component. IaaS as a service is sometime referred to as Hardware as a Service. (Haas). The vendors hosted ILS(Integrated Library Systems) are typical examples of Iaas service. Regardless of the service models the other two major accessed based types including public cloud and private cloud. Public cloud that can be accessed by any subscriber with an internet connection or having access to that cloud space. Private cloud type can be defined as a specialized cloud that is established for a specific group. Some organizations demand limited access rights for some groups. This cloud can act like an institutional repository for any specific organization. Around the globe, libraries are using this kind of service models consciously or unconsciously for over a decade In the form of service models like online scholarly database, large union catalogs. The common use of this kind of services by librarians and library user can be seen as the usage of different E-mail services such as Gmail, yahoo etc data sharing applications as Google drive & drop box and web2 tools. All these are example of SaaS service model. In this challenging environment, libraries can adopt this technology for the use and awareness of better and efficient services they can also adopt fluffy/cloud computing solutions of ILS (Integrated library systems) offered or develop by different commercial vendors keeping in view their own size and needs of the library. Libserra(cloud platform for libraries) http://www.libserra.com/is an innovative commercial technology company that offers a unique cloud based ILS management tools for libraries. Sirisdynix technologies cloud http:// www.sirsidynix.com/also offer comprehensible hosting services that provide end to end managed care for different types and size of libraries. They offer different level of solutions such as for public libraries, for consortium etc. sirisdynix technologies also offers ILS symphony for libraries. If libraries in Pakistan also choose these Cloud ILS solutions they can also get number of benefits such as after the implementation of ILS in libraries it may help to reduce the huge cost of IT networked infrastructure. It can also offer opportunity of collaboration consortiums among the same needs of libraries. The feature of on demand storage can also become a facility for libraries which they can opt any time for the implementation of new service in library. This mode of technology can also be cost effective for libraries because some SaaS Services are free of charge, while other infrastructure services such as IaaS are billed by the resources used. By implementing of cloud services modes in libraries it can also enhance librarians’ technical and administrations skills that will perk up their career. Continued on page 10

Being the first Information Commons Librarian of Pakistan

Mehreen Tahir Information Commons Librarian Forman Christian College University, Lahore (Second Prize Winner of Best Author Award of Info@PULISAA 2013)

Abstract The purpose of this article is to introduce Pakistan’s first Information Commons (IC) and its services to the library professionals of the country. The article explains the personal experience of the author and the challenges faced for service delivery in unprecedented environment and explaining the IC concepts so that other professionals can excerpt a guideline for the future if interested in establishing a similar or better information commons. Introduction

Mehreen Tahir

The library of the future, Information Commons (IC), is a totally new and an emerging Library & Information Science concept, a great diversion from bricks to clicks. It has always been the fear that libraries being the physical space are not sufficient enough to accommodate the increasing volume of information within its four walled boundary. The shift to cyber space has to take place because of its two significant features (a) Widened access (b) More storage. And we as a 21st century society have to evolve and redefine the existence of library in both physical and online world. What is Information Commons? Beagle (as cited in S. Donkai et al. 2011).defined an Information Commons as “A cluster of networked access points and associated tools situated in the context of physical, digital, human, and social resources organized in support of learning”. Wan and Yiu, 2007 (as cited in Wong, Gabrielle. K.W. 2009) stated its one-stop shop concept allows users to find information and produce their knowledge products at the same place. Hence IC is such a space to access the resources online. First Impact with the Job Forman Christian College’s, Information Commons is the first, of its kind to be introduced in Pakistan. The credit goes to the respected lady who has always been a step ahead in introducing new verges and horizons particularly to this field with her deep rational approach in delivering the innovative concepts in Pakistan, one of the pioneers of the field Madam Bushra Almas Jaswal. She rightly sensed the need of the hour and pioneered this challenging task up to its completion. First impact with my job was quite challenging and full of excitement. Reference Service & Information Literacy has always been my areas of interest. Applying for this job gave me a platform to practice the best of my knowledge and skills in the field. Challenges faced It always feels good to be surrounded by latest technology and gadgets and Hi-tech stuff as if you are a step ahead and so was my feeling when I became an information commons librarian at a state of the art facility in the FCCU. New concept, new ideas, new job always give a tough time to a beginner. The Job Specifications were the first tool to get familiar with my job role & description. The concept was new for the students, faculty and researchers of the institution so the biggest challenge for me was to create awareness & culture among the users of FCCU. For this purpose I started off with taking Orientation sessions to make the users aware about the services being catered at IC. These orientation sessions are a part of an effective Information Literacy Program. A set of certain rules and policies were defined to make the environment a bit more organized and well-maintained. A highly conducive and comfortable environment has been provided at the facility to optimize the utilization. To make the environment more user friendly, I made use of Signage Policy. We strongly believe in “Do talking without talking” to make the IC environment more conducive to research. I deigned attractive and nicely decorated signs to display general rules and instructions. Customer Service Training sessions added a lot to the professional development of IC staff. The idea is to facilitate the user with both Intellectual and Technical issues they face while working in IC.I trained my IC staff i-e.IT assistant and Student helpers regarding customer services, carrying out the routine tasks and maintenance of equipment’s health and condition. Schedules and daily task sheets were planned to streamline the procedures. Day to day duties was assigned. Weekly Training sessions were conducted with IC staff to be proficient with the use of system software, on spot trouble shooting etc. To render my on spot help services as IC librarian, I had to develop various kinds of research and reference tools such as Citation & subject guides, online free tools, resource websites, e-resources, databases etc. I did an extensive study on this purpose. Developing a blog for IC was another major milestone in my challenges. It took a lot of effort to design a blog for IC and getting to know about HTML language. A cooperative Library staff was indeed a blessing for me in this regard. Meanwhile I kept on polishing my Communication skills as it is an important element of customer services. It was the era of 2006-2008 when Sir Khalid was the chairman of the department of library and information science, university of the Punjab and we were his dull and lazy students. It was a great time; we will remember it for times to come. Sir Khalid is the first who had obtained PhD degree professor of this department, definitely credit goes to him. He is a pioneer and has opened the doors for new ones. Sir Khalid is a very kind-hearted professor. Sir we, the students of 2006-2008 morning session, will always remember you in our prayers and in our unforgettable memories. We ardently wish you the best of luck in days to come, safe, pleasant and successful future ahead. PULISAA The Rise of Fluffy Computing & Libraries continued Clouds computing also has own drawbacks.Libraries before adopting this solution should keep remain aware that it will lose local control on data and high concerns of security may rise. Data ownership is also one of the major concern, libraries administrative authorities must have complete knowledge about the access, maintenance and records updating to their data while using these services. Conclusively, Cloud computing is the inevitable future technology within libraries as it has already impacted the libraries in many ways. Enthusiastic librarians have always played a part in adopting technologies in the libraries; now they must be prepared for new paradigm shift and empower themselves to stay ahead of the game once again. . Multidimensional role of an IC Librarian: Information commons facilities are wide ranging and the staff has to be multi-dimensional (Robert, 2008). Role of a commons librarian is not just of a reference librarian. Information Commons Librarian may be named as a Blended librarian (McDonald, 2011). It requires a set of skills to carry out the activities of a librarian, a good manager and a facilitator. Being a 3 in one person is no doubt a difficult thing to handle with. IC is a platform from where the services of a traditional librarian can expand in many directions. Be a resource person (well versed in IT management), as a facilitator, be an instructor with good communication skills good communicator etc. So there are many roles that are supposed to be played as an information commons librarian. Ewing Library information commons is one of its kinds and author being newly appointed for this role is continuously learning & developing the practices around this new concept through every day challenges. Our ambition is to take it to the level of Excellence and a role model for our followers in future. References
