Memorial and honorarium gifts offer an opportunity to honor a relative, friend, or business associate. Any special occasion – birthday, anniversary, graduation, and other accomplishments – are times to honor.

The best stocks to donate are those that have increased greatly in value, particularly those producing a low yield. Donating property that has risen in value and that has been held for more than one year results in no payment of capital gains tax on the transaction. Individuals can also receive an income tax reduction for the full fair market value of the stock. Please contact John Bennett, Director of Annual Giving and Special Gifts, at jbennett@mitty.com for a stock transfer form and instructions.

Special Events Underwriting and sponsorship of events, such as the annual Black & Gold Gala, The Mitty Auction, and Alumni & Friends Golf Tournament, serve to defray the school’s expenses to produce these fundraisers and community events. Thank you for helping our students become the intellectually competent, just, faith-filled, respectful leaders of tomorrow.

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends, During the holiday break, my husband and I watched the Netflix film Leave the World Behind. Without giving anything away, we found the message to be curiously complex yet surprisingly simple. There were some riveting moments, including a rich, leading performance by Archbishop Mitty alumna Myha’la Herrold ’14. As we watched, what was most clear to us was the level of intentionality. Every cinemagraphic frame, every facial expression, every music and word choice was purposeful. It really seemed like the author of this story was intentionally trying to tell us something. In restorative justice practices, there is an enlightening concept related to recognizing intent vs. impact. By most definitions, intent is what you have in mind as a goal when you decide to perform an action — in essence, your intention. It reflects what type of impact you want to create with your actions. Impact is the result of those actions. However, the learning comes when you recognize that the results aren’t necessarily the same as what you intended. As you peruse this annual report issue of the Mitty Magazine, I hope you connect with our daily intention. Every day, we intend to celebrate and affirm our diverse cultural community, which reminds us that we are all made in the image and likeness of God. Every day, our 300 administrators, faculty, staff, and coaches choose to show up as servant leaders, ready to highlight opportunities for us to share sacramental experiences. Every day, our 1750 students commit themselves to nurturing kinship with their classmates. Every day, our alumni community finds new ways to show how Archbishop Mitty has set their hearts on fire by helping them discover their passions and build lifelong friendships. Every day, our donors, volunteers, and supporters give generously to help us provide this education that transforms our world in large and small ways. Our work now is to recognize the impact. Recognize the hopeful impact that our Mitty charism, so beautifully articulated through curricula, language, and art, has on our daily lives. Acknowledge the intergenerational impact that Mitty pride has on this community, and join me as we thank the hundreds of individuals, families, small businesses, corporations, and organizations listed here for their ongoing generosity. That impact is immeasurable. The gifts we are called to share with the world are abundant and incredibly purposeful. So, in this new year, I urge us all to stay intentional. Deepen your faith. Pursue academic scholarship. Serve joyfully. Wear your Mitty gear with pride. Give generously and often of your time, treasure, and talent. In doing so, our collective gifts can flow freely and make a lasting impact for the betterment of our global world. Then maybe, just maybe, instead of leaving the world behind, we can remember why it’s worth it to stay. May God bless you and your families immensely this year and always,

Latanya (Johnson ’92) Hilton President

Dear Friends, It seems fitting that this post holiday edition of the Mitty Magazine focuses on the many gifts found within our community. From the articulation of the school’s charism to the amazing artistry of alumna Isabella Esler ’22 to the pages of donors who help support our endeavors, each segment of this edition points to the unselfish sharing of gifts within and beyond our community. As the feature article tells us, the process of articulating the school’s charism brought together the rich history of Archbishop Mitty High School and the community of Catholic educators who serve here today and allowed us to see that our charism has been a lived one for almost 60 years now. The tradition of nurturing kinship and recognizing the importance of understanding Imago Dei, long-standing elements of an Archbishop Mitty education, are highlighted through Fr. Francis’ reflection on our ECJ: Jamaica trip last summer and in the ongoing work of our DEI program’s parent Zoom chats. Each piece reminds us of gifts that shape Archbishop Mitty’s commitment to educating for transformation, ensuring that our students go forth into the world prepared to bring about important and life-affirming change. Our daily encounters with sacramental experience are beautifully illustrated in the photo essay on Advent and the story of our annual Christmas Rally, which contrast the waiting of Advent with the celebration of sharing selflessly with one another at Christmas. These reflections on the meaning of the season and the celebration of the birth of Christ serve as a reminder of God’s presence in the ordinary moments of our lives. With a turn of the page, the call to servant leadership is reflected in the spotlight on some of our talented coaches who share their gifts with our student-athletes each day, providing mentorship to our future leaders. Each encounter with our students allows our community to give and receive gifts that shape who we are and how we interact with one another, truly exemplifying the power of an Archbishop Mitty education. And as I flip through the pages of the annual report, I am overwhelmed by the generous support of so many, who have invested in the important ministry that we undertake each day. Their ongoing generosity sets our hearts on fire and enables us to continue to provide a mission-centric Catholic college preparatory education to our students. Thank you for entrusting your children with us, for your belief in the good work done here each day, and for the ongoing support of your alma mater. May God bless you and your families.

With sincere gratitude,

Katherine Caputo Principal

THE ARCHBISHOP MITTY CHARISM Sharing Our Gifts in Service to Others

By Kristin Byrnes - Campus Ministry Associate for Adult Spirituality

“The word charism comes from the simple Greek word for “gift,” and it was St. Paul’s term for describing those particular gifts of the Holy Spirit given to individuals for the sake of serving others.” Edward P. Hahnenberg Each year, during the Catholic Church’s celebration of Pentecost, we hear the story of the Holy Spirit coming upon the disciples. The Holy Spirit comforted them in their grief, and imbued them with particular gifts, encouraging them to spread the Good News and tell the story of Jesus. Our community here at Archbishop Mitty is similarly given specific gifts from the Holy Spirit, and we know these gifts to be our charism. The term charism is a “Greek word used in the New Testament for ‘favor’ or ‘gratuitous gift.’ Charisms, or spiritual gifts, are special abilities given to all Christians by the Holy Spirit to give them power both to represent Christ and to be a channel of God’s goodness for people. Whether extraordinary or ordinary, all charisms ought to be exercised in the service of God’’ (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2003). Unlike schools who fall under a particular religious order within the Catholic church, our gifts as a diocesan school were not specified for us, which allowed us to undertake the prayerful and reflective process of articulating our charism ourselves.

ARCHBISHOP MITTY MAGAZINE

In May of 2022, a committee was formed of various stakeholders from our community - faculty and staff, administrators, alumni and parents - to speak about charism and what gifts, given to us by the Spirit, we see here at Archbishop Mitty. We gathered in prayerful conversation. We first spent some time learning more about the Marianist order’s history and charism, which is an important historical narrative for us here at Archbishop Mitty, given that the institution was initially conducted by brothers and priests of the Marianist order. Then, we took some time to reflect on our own educational backgrounds, many of which led us to encounter beautiful charisms within such local institutions as Santa Clara University, in their Ignatian tradition, in addition to other schools as far away as Chicago, where we were steeped in the Dominican charism. During the last few months of the academic year, we identified six elements, which came to comprise the charism here at Archbishop Mitty. Over that summer, the committee worked to draft these elements into a single document that tied each element of the charism to scripture and Catholic tradition.

The Six Elements of the Archbishop Mitty Charism IMAGO DEI: We celebrate each person and ourselves as “made in the image and likeness of God.”

HEARTS ON FIRE: We encounter Jesus, as the disciples did, and our hearts are “set on fire” to live Gospel values.

NURTURING KINSHIP: We strive to be and build community by embracing solidarity.

CALL TO SERVANT LEADERSHIP: We use our voices and actions generously to serve the common good and help each individual reach their full potential.

SACRAMENTAL EXPERIENCE: We embrace the familiar and know that the ordinary is an invitation to encounter God.

EDUCATING FOR TRANSFORMATION: We pursue knowledge in order to discover our individual calling to change the world.

In August 2022, we brought the charism draft to our faculty and staff and took the year to engage in thoughtful discussions around not only how the elements of the charism are articulated, but more importantly, how we experience these gifts of the Spirit here on campus. Teachers spoke of students who had written to them after graduating, sharing stories of how impactful their four years at Archbishop Mitty had been for them. A common “hearts on fire” experience that was named was hearing the students sing the liturgical theme song at liturgies and also at Monarch Madness. Many mentioned the work of our DEI Office to foster Imago Dei. The dialogue was beautifully illuminating, and many faculty and staff members walked away from these moments commenting on how their conversations were truly grace-filled. Towards the end of the academic year in 2023 our focus shifted to how we were going to share these elements of our charism with our students and then with other constituents in our community. A beautiful charism poster, complete with a new logo, was designed to complement our charism document. This artfully composed piece found a permanent home in all of our classrooms and offices to serve as a daily reminder of the charism.

The AMHS charism poster hangs on the walls in all classrooms and offices across campus as a reminder of the gifts bestowed upon us by the Holy Spirit and of our call to use these gifts in service to others.

At New Student Orientation, our newest Monarchs participated in a scavenger hunt, identifying each of the six elements of our charism. As the school year began, all students were introduced to the school’s charism in their religious studies classes. These introductory lessons were enhanced by a student-focused video, highlighting our charism in action. Created by Ethan Rao ’25 and Director of Campus Ministry, Ms. Jamie Visser, the video featured current Monarchs explaining the concept of charism, sharing each element of our charism and how we experience those gifts here at Archbishop Mitty. 1

This year, each of our monthly all school assemblies and prayer services during professional development days focus on one of the elements of our charism. We began this important journey in September, learning more about Imago Dei and better understanding what it means to be made in God’s image and likeness. In our charism video, Lyric Powell ’24, a senior LIFE Corps member, reminds us that “believing we are all created in God’s image requires that we treat everyone with dignity and respect, not in spite of who we are, but because of who we are.” Posters illustrating each element of the charism, designed by Tebin Kim ’24, will be placed in all Religious Studies classrooms throughout the year. Imago Dei: “Created in the Image and Likeness of God” banners lead the way through campus. 3. Hearts on Fire: The cross reminds us of Jesus’ Post-Resurrection appearances to the disciples; “Were not our hearts burning within us while He spoke to us on the way…?” 4. Nurturing Kinship: The mighty Monarch statue, situated in between the Fien and MacLean gyms, is a reminder of our shared kinship, united as Monarchs in our pride for our school and those who walk the halls each day. 5. Call to Servant Leadership: The statue of Jesus washing a woman’s feet located in the center of campus marks another stop along the scavenger hunt route. 6. Sacramental Experience: The chapel serves a reminder of one Sacramental experience that calls us to see God in all that we experience each day. 7. Educating for Transformation: Student tutorial centers on campus serve as reminders of how an Archbishop Mitty education provides opportunities to send forth students who can make a difference in our world.

(Pages 7-8) Imago Dei and Sacramental Experience Posters Elements of the AMHS charism have been beautifully captured by Tebin Kim ’24 in these posters which grace the walls of all religious studies classrooms on campus.

Believing we are all created in God’s image requires that we treat everyone with dignity and respect, not in spite of who we are, but because of who we are.

” Lyric Powell ’24

IMAGO DEI: Rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition, we celebrate each person as Imago Dei, “made in the image and likeness of God” (Genesis 1:27). Using this principle, students learn to treat one another with respect, empathy, and compassion. Through community, we acknowledge the uniqueness of each person’s identity and the revelation of who God is, alive in the world today. This belief reminds us that each person is deserving of dignity and respect as children of God. This expands beyond our community as well into the ways that we interact with the wider community and our call to serve and minister to others. Imago Dei seeks for us to see God in ourselves and others, thereby being inclusive of all who are part of our community and also those we encounter in our call to serve and minister to others.

HEARTS ON FIRE: After the Resurrection, Jesus appeared to the disciples on the Road to Emmaus. The disciples did not realize they were in Jesus’ presence until he left them and they said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us as He spoke with us on the road and opened the scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32) In similar ways we have experiences that “set our hearts on fire.” Encountering agape leads to an invitation to share God’s love with the world through service. Sharing the Good News of our faith is cause for celebration. Setting others’ “hearts on fire” is an opportunity to build community and experience God in our midst.

NURTURING KINSHIP: Fr. Greg Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries, writes in Tattoos on the Heart that there is “No daylight to separate us. Only kinship. Inching ourselves closer to creating a community of kinship such that God might recognize it. Soon we imagine, with God, this circle of compassion. Then we imagine no one standing outside of that circle, moving ourselves closer to the margins so that the margins themselves will be erased.” We are called to community and relationship as members of God’s family. It is our responsibility to be and build community for our neighbors near and far. Recognizing and embracing solidarity with those whose experiences may at first appear different than ours is a key element to building God’s Kingdom of justice on earth.

WINTER 2024

7

CALL TO SERVANT LEADERSHIP: Pope John XXIII describes the common good as “the sum total of social conditions that allow people, either as groups or individuals, to reach their fulfillment more fully and more easily” (Pacem in Terris 51). We strive to uphold this common good, to allow the relationships we have built to transform our view of the world. Serving the common good requires that we care deeply about every individual’s needs in our community. Through servant leadership, we use our voices and actions to help all reach their full potential.

SACRAMENTAL EXPERIENCE: St. Ignatius of Loyola reminded us that we can “see God in all things.” We can do this by embracing the familiar; the ordinary is an invitation to the sacred. We experience and receive God’s sacramental grace through participation in the Sacraments, particularly the Eucharist which is the “source and summit” (Sacrosanctum Concilium 10) of our faith. Our everyday life is full of joy and celebration. Sacramental experiences are an opportunity to feel God in a personal and communal way.

EDUCATING FOR TRANSFORMATION: Pursuing knowledge is rooted in the desire to reveal truth – veritas – and that pursuit enriches our understanding of God and our world. St. Catherine of Siena tells us that, “The reason to gain knowledge is to give it away.” Through education, one discovers individual purpose and vocation, thus moving towards transforming the world in large and small ways.

To complement these introductory elements of our charism curriculum, members of our Religious Studies Department took part in a summer grant, to identify ways in which we could more explicitly incorporate our charism into the curriculum. The result is an entire module within our Canvas learning platform, accessible to teachers, with a plethora of assignments and student learning objectives, all with the goal of helping to teach the students about the charism and to further facilitate common language when describing our charism. At the end of the Catholic mass we are told to, “go forth to love and serve the Lord.” Our Archbishop Mitty charism, gifts freely and graciously given to us by the Holy Spirit, calls us not only to live these gifts within our faith community but to share them out in the world as well, to be and build a community of compassionate care for others, to create the Kingdom of God here on earth. As a member of our community, we invite you to consider how you are being called to live out the charism in your workplace, with your family, or wherever life has taken you today!

From Strangers to Friends

Ethics, Culture, and Justice: Jamaica 2023 By Fr. Francis Kalaw - AMHS Chaplain

From May 30th to June 8th 2023, 23 students and five adult chaperones from Archbishop Mitty High School went on an immersion experience to Jamaica with the Diocese of Mandeville (Jamaica) and their existing outreach programs. For eight days, AMHS students had the opportunity to get to know their fellow classmates and adult leaders in a different context. It was also a unique way to serve and learn away from our campus. I must say, I have been involved with numerous immersion trips as a student, a seminarian, and later as a priest. But my experience with the Jamaica immersion trip was a unique and special one. Firstly, it was my first international trip since Covid-19 hit. The second, and perhaps more obvious, reason is the challenging task of helping supervise 23 students in an unfamiliar place. My short reflection will highlight the overall spirit of our trip, why it was such a formative experience both for the students and adult chaperones, and how we began our journey to Jamaica as “strangers” but left as “friends” to everyone. It was a great start to summer for me, believing that I would be engaging in great missionary work, building all kinds of structures for those who needed them, and learning some “Patois” (pronounced as Patwa) along the way. While all these things were accomplished in some way or another, what I found to be the most surprising thing was how tangible God works in our lives through seemingly mundane and ordinary encounters. This was especially evident in the daily conversations I had with our own students, the retreat house staff, bus drivers, and the wonderful groups of people we worked with in Mandeville. It was seen through experiences with the local children who always wanted to play, notwithstanding the language barrier that existed between us. Gracie Imrisek ’24, who took part in the trip, shared, “By listening to them, painting their nails, or dancing with them, we were making an impact on their lives and our

10

ARCHBISHOP MITTY MAGAZINE

own lives.” All these connections were ordinary, happening each day of the trip, and there was seemingly nothing special within the activities themselves. Yet, I left every one of those encounters with something more. We were simply living our lives there in Jamaica, which is exactly what God was calling us to do. He didn’t expect, or even want, us to have grand expectations of “fixing” problems. What I discovered by simply living my life in charity, faith, and patience was that everything is grace-filled if you are open to it. One of the adult chaperones Stephanie Schoppe ’12, an Administrative Assistant for Student Activities commented, “Seeing our students get more comfortable each day with the people and traditions and coming to the realization that some of the more material items they are used to really aren’t that important is an amazing part of the experience.” Those mundane and often-times challenging conversations were grace-filled. Supervising the young students at a local elementary school, letting them play in the swing with so much joy, or watching them drop from the slide - those were grace-filled moments. Not knowing what to do in the midst of building a house, that was grace-filled too. It later occurred to me how sometimes, we don’t need a lot to experience what grace is. The opportunity to travel to Jamaica with the help and guidance of so many kind-hearted Jamaicans allowed us to receive this grace. Coming back to the United States, I felt more disposed and open to the working of the Holy Spirit in my everyday life and encounters with others on and off Archbishop Mitty’s campus. The AMHS immersion trip program exists to support the growth of our students and works to strengthen four important values in its participants: social justice, spirituality, simplicity, and community. Those values were ever-present in our journey last summer and remain at the forefront of our lives as we continue educating for transformation.

MEET THE AWARD-WINNING COACHES WHO CALL AMHS HOME By Katie Helland ’09

12

ARCHBISHOP MITTY MAGAZINE

When student athletes graduate from Archbishop Mitty High School, they take with them lessons on leadership, resilience, grit, integrity, teamwork, and school pride. Supporting them are elite coaches who played sports at the highest level in college and professionally. Meet the people behind an athletics program that builds young leaders.

Coach Sue Phillips - Basketball A Monarch herself, Coach Sue Phillips ’86, is one of the most decorated high school women’s basketball coaches in the nation. She has been named national coach of the year by Gatorade, Naismith, and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. Coach Phillips has 30 years of experience coaching high school women’s basketball. She has led the Monarchs to over 800 wins, including six CIF state championships, 15 NorCal, 24 CCS, and 26 league titles. Coach Phillips has also led USA Basketball’s U16 and U17 national teams to gold medals — four times. For her, teaching leadership skills is key. “We strive to teach our athletes the value of a quality work ethic, discipline, and integrity,” she said. “Say what you mean, and mean what you say.” To honor her contributions to the lives of so many studentathletes and to the game of basketball, Coach Phillips has been inducted into the San Jose Sports Authority’s Hall of Fame. In April 2024, she will also be inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tennessee. “There is so much to love about coaching,” she said. “Cultivating and enjoying a culture of teamwork, inspiring young people to reach new heights, and sharing in the joys of victory.”

Coach Tom Miller - Swimming & Diving Just a short walk away from the gym at the pool deck, Coach Thomas Miller ’83, is another accomplished coach with decades of experience. He brings 37 years of coaching experience to the school’s swimming and diving program. Under his leadership, the Monarchs have won 21 league and 11 CCS championships. More than 40 of his swimmers and divers have been named All-Americans. For Coach Miller, helping students understand the importance of community and their role in it is critical to creating leaders. “If I was to name something vital to the goal of producing good people from my program — which is what my goal is — it would be that they have an understanding that the pool and this community is always home!” he said. “I believe that if they approach each practice and competition with an understanding that the connection made in the water and at AMHS will carry them through and will always be a place they can come ‘home’ to, then I have done my job.”

Coach Tim Kennedy - Basketball Another elite coach on campus is Coach Tim Kennedy, who played basketball professionally in Europe and for the Irish national team before leading the Archbishop Mitty men’s basketball program to its first CIF state championships, as well as four NorCal, eight CCS and nine WCAL titles. For him, teaching resilience is key. “The number one skill we want our athletes to learn is to control what they can

control,” Coach Kennedy said. “We focus on the effort, attitude, and energy they bring as well as having a ‘next play’ mentality, whether they made a mistake or not. We are constantly bringing up ‘next play’ in all of our workouts and meetings to help our players see how it applies in so many different situations — even off the basketball court.” Alumni of the men’s basketball program include Aaron Gordon ’13, now the power forward for the Denver Nuggets, the NBA champions of 2023. Gordon led the Monarchs to two state championships, under the guidance of Coach Kennedy.

Coach Justina Williams - Field Hockey Monarch Justina Williams ’95 achieved at the highest level as a student athlete in high school – and college — before returning to her alma mater as a coach and teacher. She played field hockey at Stanford University, where she was named NCAA All-American — twice — as well as Most Outstanding Senior Female Athlete. As a high school coach, she has led the Monarchs to eight CCS championships and nine league titles. What is the number one leadership skill she wants Monarchs to learn? “Teamwork and relentless effort,” she said. Coach Williams has been inducted into the AMHS Hall of Fame three times — as an athlete, with a team, and as a coach. In 2019, she was also named coach of the year for the state of California by MAX Field Hockey. “Being a Monarch means collaboration and constant and consistent effort to be better every day, working together and embracing both our differences and commonalities to create an inclusive community where all can thrive and achieve together to become the best version of themselves as a group,” Coach Williams said.

Coach Jon Wallace - Volleyball Finally, Coach Jon Wallace brings more than 20 years of collegiate coaching experience to the women’s volleyball program. After playing volleyball professionally, Coach Wallace became the assistant coach at Pepperdine University and later the head coach for the program at Santa Clara University. While at SCU, he led the Broncos to the NCAA Tournament more than a dozen times — including a Final Four appearance — and was named the national coach of the year. Archbishop Mitty’s volleyball program is regularly ranked one of the best in the United States and holds titles for more than a dozen state championships – the highest number claimed by any single school in the state. But for Coach Wallace, the real focus is on building leaders. “The two skills we hope to develop every day are: awareness and a growth mindset,” Coach Wallace said. “We believe with these two skills, our athletes will be on their way to continued growth as athletes, students, and people.” WINTER 2024

The SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS on Campus By Greg Walker - Director of Student Activities

Christmas is always a special time of year for Archbishop Mitty, and Student Activities works to spread the holiday “warm and fuzzies” with our entire community. The season officially starts when our ASB members visit a local tree farm and pick out a tree for the Sobrato Student Life Center, and then one for the center of campus. Once the tree is purchased, our Student Government members take an evening to decorate the campus. Ribbons, lights, inflatables, images of nutcrackers, and a warm fireplace are on display to bring the look and feel of the holiday season to campus. Even before the tree purchases and decorations, the festivities “unofficially” begin. They actually start before Thanksgiving, with the opening of Christmas Wishes. We ask the student body to think about a special, yet practical gift that would make someone’s Christmas a little better. As part of our Christmas celebration, Santa, Mrs. Claus, and their elves work to fulfill as many wishes as possible. Granted wishes are genuine and sincere in the effort to bring the Christmas spirit to our campus. We even go as far as having “special guest visitors” during lunches who are available to assist with collecting wishes. This creates the framework for our Christmas Rally, where students and faculty receive presents from Santa and Mrs. Claus. The only way someone can receive a present is for someone else to wish for it. Presents are not only distributed during the rally, but ASB students act as elves and deliver wishes to classrooms throughout the day. Christmas music in the quad and candy canes distributed in class also create the perfect vibe for the day.

There have been many memorable gifts and presentations over the years: In 2012, we staged a wedding ceremony for Graham Oleson and Kendra Hofmann-Curry. They were both teachers at Mitty and were getting married in the summer, but we decided to have their ceremony for students to see during the rally. Deacon Steve Herrera served as the officiant for that gift to the student body. In 2014, Cal Williams ’16 received a puppy at the end of the rally. This gift was replicated in 2022 when Malakai Marshall ’23 also received a puppy. In 2018, Ethan Rodriguez ’19 received a Nintendo Switch game console along with the game, Super Smash Bros. The game that he received during the rally was actually released to the purchasing public on that same day. In 2020, members of student government pulled off the nearly impossible by executing the Christmas Rally over Zoom. Student government representatives acted as elves delivering gifts to people’s homes, while media coordinators used the Zoom technology to broadcast the deliveries to the viewing AMHS students, faculty, and staff. This was definitely one of our prouder moments in the middle of distance learning. Our students love Christmas and all it entails. The feeling of giving to others promotes a strong sense of community. The opportunity to construct a rally that puts our entire community into the proper spirit is a fantastic responsibility that Student Activities looks forward to each and every year.

A collection of moments from the 2023 Christmas Rally. 14

From MITTY WAY to BROADWAY Imagine yourself as a high school graduate about to attend college in New York City to study musical theater. Fast forward to December, and you are taking a bow as the lead in a Broadway national tour! That is the exact spot Isabella Esler ’22 found herself in when she took the stage in San Francisco at the Golden Gate Theater as Lydia Deetz in the Broadway national tour of Beetlejuice The Musical. We had a chance to catch up with this very busy Monarch alumna while the show was in Denver, Colorado to ask Isabella about how her time at Archbishop Mitty prepared her for such an incredible moment in her life! Mr. Santana: What made you decide to attend Archbishop Mitty High School? Isabella: I think Archbishop Mitty’s theater program interested me a lot. I had only heard so many great things about it, and at the time, I really wanted to pursue acting and theater, so I thought that could be a good way to start. I also really enjoyed the big sense of community that Archbishop Mitty has to offer sports, clubs, classes, etc. After visiting the school in 8th grade, I just got a feeling that I was going to have a great experience if I attended. Mr. Santana: What was the audition process for Beetlejuice The Musical like during your senior year of high school? Isabella: It was the beginning of my senior year, and I saw an open call online around September for Beetlejuice The Musical on Broadway reopening after Covid, and I decided that it would be fun to send in a self tape! I didn’t hear anything for six months so I kind of forgot about it. Then, I got asked to film all of the callback material in a short amount of time, so I ended up filming at Mitty with lots of help, and I think I filmed around four to five videos in three days. It was crazy, but it was so fun! I ended up getting asked to do a callback for the first national tour the summer after graduating. I flew to New York, did two days of callbacks, and then I got it! So my journey with the show was almost a year long. Mr. Santana: What are your favorite memories of performing at Archbishop Mitty? Isabella: I did Bright Star when I was a freshman and it was my very first experience with Archbishop Mitty and its theater program. It was honestly just so special to me because I had met so many amazing people and I really got a feel for what this community was. Even during Covid when my entire junior year was in my bedroom, I had such a fun experience when I was in the virtual production of Puffs as Harry Potter. That show really pushed me out of my comfort zone as I didn’t typically do a lot of comedy growing up. That definitely changed my view on acting and my self-confidence. My last show at Archbishop Mitty was as 16

Sandy Cheeks in The SpongeBob Musical, which was so special to me because I got to perform in such a wacky show with all of the friends that I had grown up with for years. Mr. Santana: What are the biggest challenges for you on the road with eight shows per week? Isabella: I think adjusting to a new climate every week is hard. Every city has different altitudes and humidity and temperatures and that will always affect your voice and your energy. So just being able to adapt to the changes is hard and I’m still learning.

Mr. Santana: When you came out on stage and bowed at the end of Beetlejuice The Musical in front of the hometown crowds in San Francisco at the Golden Gate Theater and in San Jose at the Center for the Performing Arts, what was that like for you? Isabella: It was the craziest feeling in the world. Just being on a stage where I watched so many shows growing up was the most amazing feeling. I felt really supported as so many people were at my first show in San Francisco. I really felt all the love.

Mr. Santana: We are so proud of you and all you’ve accomplished. I think I can speak for our entire Performing Arts faculty that none of us are surprised that you are where you are today headlining a Broadway national tour! This is only just the beginning of what will be without a doubt a great career. Isabella: This show changed my life, and I’m so thankful to have had such a great community at Archbishop Mitty to help me get where I am today!

Driven by the school mission and the guiding belief that each individual is created in the image and likeness of God, the DEI Program actively seeks ways in which we can all live out this clear directive. On campus, this might be done through a school-wide inclusivity campaign, reflecting on a gospel passage at an all school assembly, or supporting one of our many affinity groups during a cultural event. Understanding that DEI education and awareness is not only ongoing, but also the responsibility of all members of a community, the DEI Program launched parent Zoom chats in the fall 2021. Parents expressed interest in their desire to provide support for DEI efforts and wanted to work in partnership with the school. Responding to this request, the DEI parent subcommittee was born. The parent committee meets ahead of time to discuss the topic and brainstorms how to welcome and engage parents. The purpose of the DEI parent Zoom chats is to create an intentional space for parents and guardians to discuss topics surrounding DEI, share personal experiences, and meet other parents and guardians. Maria Simon, current Board Member and AMHS parent of alumni (Jude ’09, Kalyn ’13) comments, “Diversity and inclusion are key and critical to who AMHS is and what we stand for. Ensuring that our student body, faculty, and staff reflect a diverse and inclusive community is of the utmost importance to our educational community. The parent Zoom chats help us see if we are meeting our goals and where we can continue to enhance.” DEI’s parent Zoom chats foster collaboration and partnership between Archbishop Mitty and its families. The Catholic Church teaches that parents are the primary educators in their children’s lives. In line with this belief, our parent Zoom chats allow parents to be active participants in their children’s education. In order to create a more welcoming and empathetic Archbishop Mitty High School, these conversations must be ongoing. They cannot be limited to the DEI Program or the classroom, but integrated into our daily lives and continuous learning practices. By giving parents the space and opportunity to discuss topics such as radical empathy and diversity, they are encouraged to continue this important dialogue in their own homes. Creating a welcoming space of belonging requires patience, respect, education, and the support of an entire community. No doubt, working

together makes Archbishop Mitty High School a stronger, more welcoming place for everyone. Parent Zoom chats are advertised in the AMHS weekly newsletter and will continue to take place virtually each semester. All current parents are invited to join these interactive conversations. A special thank you to the DEI parent subcommittee for their continued efforts to celebrate diversity and ongoing support of Archbishop Mitty High School.

AMPA TAILGATE

The Archbishop Mitty Parent Association (AMPA) teamed up with the AMHS Athletic Department to host the AMPA Tailgate on Friday, September 1st, at Foothill College. The kickoff event marks the start of the football season at AMHS. The atmosphere was lively and energetic, and along with a barbeque dinner, all attendees received a spirit pack containing pom poms, Mitty eye stickers, sunglasses, and black and gold beads. What’s more, children in attendance received plush Archie teddy bears and Mitty foam fingers. The tailgate was attended by over 800 community members, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Special thanks to our event volunteer leads Lynn Brown and Vian Davis and to the many event volunteers who welcomed our guests.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER The annual Night Football Game had its usual sellout crowd. The Monarchs took on Bellarmine College Prep, and the rivalry prompted much enthusiasm on both sides. The Monarchs claimed victory in convincing fashion, 19 - 0. Over 50 alumni and their families returned to campus for the game, watched from the alumni bleachers, and enjoyed food from Mio Vicino Restaurant in the alumni tent. The Athletic Department also organized a pregame reception in the Sobrato Center, where AMHS Hall of Fame members were welcomed and celebrated. 1

The 2023 Black & Gold Gala was an unforgettable night filled with great food and amazing talent. Held at the Imperial Ballroom in the Signia by Hilton San Jose on Saturday, November 4, 2023, the event began with a festive cocktail hour in the foyer, followed by performances by the AMHS Jazz Choir, Kind of Blue, before the grand ballroom doors opened. Guests were treated to a gourmet meal with wine and dessert. The Late Show was the theme of the night, hosted by AMHS students Ryan De Marco ’24 and Jayden Brown ’25. Jazz in the AM, Exodus, and AMHS Royals Dance Ensemble put on an extraordinary and entertaining production of throwbacks from Pat Benatar, No Doubt, Green Day, and Tina Turner, accompanied by a jazz performance from Mitty alum Lee Pardini ’03, which received several standing ovations. Actor and comedian Paul Reiser headlined the show and filled the room with laughter induced by his jokes about aging, marriage, and fatherhood. The Archbishop Mitty High School Board of Regents hosted the evening, chaired by Regent Ashley (Mendez ’93) Fijman. The night was a success thanks to the underwriters, supporters, guests, volunteers, students, faculty, and staff who made it possible. SPECIAL GUEST STAR: COMEDIAN PAUL REISER

Monarch Leadership Society The Monarch Leadership Society honors those friends of Archbishop Mitty High School who have contributed to the very foundation of the school by supporting the growth of the facilities, programs, and scholarships that make Archbishop Mitty High School what it is today. Each of these very special donors has a giving history of at least $50,000 or has made a formal commitment to the school through a planned gift or established endowment. Their support allows us to reach our goal of educating intellectually competent, faith-filled, just, and respectful leaders.

President’s Circle The President’s Circle is comprised of alumni, parents of alumni, parents of current students, and friends of Archbishop Mitty High School who have made gifts of $4,000 or more during the preceding fiscal year. Many families and friends choose to continue their membership in the President’s Circle year after year in recognition of the superior achievements of the school. We salute the following members of this pace-setting group and hope that their example will serve to encourage others to invest in Archbishop Mitty High School.

Annual Fund The Annual Fund is the cornerstone of giving to Archbishop Mitty High School and second only to tuition in providing income to the school. Regardless of size, each and every gift to the Annual Fund directly benefits Archbishop Mitty students. From academics to athletics, campus ministry to college counseling, technology to performing arts, Christian service to student activities, donations to the Annual Fund support the broad spectrum of critical programs at Archbishop Mitty. Gifts to the Annual Fund have traditionally given Archbishop Mitty its margin of excellence, helping to make up the difference between tuition and the true cost of educating each child.

GIFTS FROM PARENTS OF CURRENT STUDENTS We recognize that parents already incur the cost of tuition, and we are grateful for their additional support, contribution, and investment in their children’s education. In most cases, the gifts listed represent an annual payment on each family’s four-year commitment to the Parent Pledge Program..

Gifts from Alumni and Current Students All Archbishop Mitty High School students benefit from the altruism of the Monarchs who came before them. Alumni understand the value of the Archbishop Mitty High School experience perhaps better than anyone, and the ongoing support of the alumni community is critical to the school’s continued success. On March 10, 2023, we held the sixth annual Monarch Day of Giving, raising over $25,000 with 35 classes represented. Next year’s Monarch Day of Giving will be on March 1, 2024, the day after Monarch Madness; and in the spirit of the Madness, friendly competition will be encouraged between graduating classes. Thank you to the alumni who gave so generously during the 2022-2023 school year.

Endowing Our Future An endowment fund is the restricted capital that provides a permanent source of income for Archbishop Mitty High School. The principal is invested in a disciplined manner, and the earnings and investment appreciation are channeled back into the fund. This allows the endowment to grow over time and become a source of long-term support that can be maintained permanently. Endowments provide much-needed funding for families who might not otherwise be able to afford a Catholic college preparatory education. They also provide funding for the programs and services from which all Archbishop Mitty High School students benefit. We continue our fundraising towards “endowing our future” after successfully achieving the $20 million goal of the Campaign for Archbishop Mitty. There are three types of endowment funds at Archbishop Mitty High School: Scholarship Endowment Fund Investment earnings from this fund provide tuition assistance to students with demonstrated financial need. Named scholarship opportunities begin with a gift or pledge of $10,000 or more. A scholarship is considered fully funded (providing the minimum AMHS tuition assistance award) when it reaches $50,000. Program Endowment Fund Investment earnings from this fund assist curricular and co-curricular programs at Archbishop Mitty High School. Named program endowment opportunities begin with a gift of $10,000. The amount required to fully fund program endowments varies, depending on the designated benefiting program. General Endowment Fund Investment earnings from this fund supplement the school’s annual operating budget, helping to offset the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating a student at Archbishop Mitty High School. A named general endowment opportunity begins with a gift of $10,000. Those wishing to take part in the Campaign for Archbishop Mitty High School by establishing their own endowment or by contributing to existing endowments at any giving level should contact Keith B. Brother Fien Volunteer Recognition Brother Herman J. Fien was a dedicated Marianist who devoted his entire life to God by teaching and serving others. From 1964 until his death in 1977, Brother Fien taught in the World Languages Department at Archbishop Mitty High School. He worked tirelessly with the parents at Archbishop Mitty High School, particularly the volunteers, who gave of themselves in an effort to build community and spirit. Each year since his passing, the volunteers of Archbishop Mitty High School are honored in his name for their selfless dedication of time and energy on behalf of the school community. We are blessed with exceptionally dedicated men and women who, like Brother Fien, continue to give generously of their time and talents, without which we could not offer an Archbishop Mitty High School education. Their example of service and care is volunteering at its best. VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

Service Learning Program The Service Learning Program exists to provide students with an opportunity to offer witness to their strong commitment to Christian values through service to the community. Each student at Mitty is required to complete a minimum of 20 hours each year during their freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years. Through service, students fulfill their potential to be intellectually competent, just, faith-filled, respectful leaders as they serve others and work to bring justice to all God’s children. We are grateful to the following organizations, some of the many groups that hosted Archbishop Mitty High School students this year.

Supporting Archbishop Mitty High School Memorial and Honorarium Gifts

Securities

Your contributions are tax deductible as allowed by law. Please contact Vivian Peng, Director of Events Operations, at vpeng@mitty.com to discuss opportunities. Bequests In providing for the school in a person’s estate, the donor’s lawyer should be instructed that our corporate title is “Roman Catholic Welfare Corporation of San Jose, a corporation sole, for the benefit of Archbishop Mitty High School.”
