AMERICAN PISTACHIO GROWERS GATHER AT THE ANNUAL MEMBER LUNCHEON July 23, 2021 - Visalia, California For the first time since the 2020 American Pistachio Growers Annual Conference, APG members gathered and reconnected in person for the Annual Member Luncheon in Visalia on July 23. APG staff members welcomed over 425 attendees to the annual summer gathering.

American Pistachio Growers Board of Directors, Chair Dominic Pitigliano, opened the luncheon by welcoming everyone.

APG ambassador Miss California 2021 Jazmin Avalos, who was crowned in June, sang the national anthem.

Assemblyman Adam Gray spoke about California’s dire water situation, government’s impact on our daily lives and his ongoing advocacy regarding agricultural matters.


THE ANNUAL SUMMER GATHERING BRINGS NEW AND LONGTIME FRIENDS TOGETHER The annual summer luncheons have been an occasion for both new and longtime members of APG to learn about APG activities and what’s happening in the industry and renew a sense of community.

APG President Richard Matoian provided a state of the industry update.

When the pandemic restrictions halted travel and in-person meetings, Judy Hirigoyen, Vice President of Global Marketing for APG, shared how APG turned to Zoom and other media to continue promoting American pistachios and maintaining consumer demand for them. She also spoke about the new Friday Fuel-Up Facebook Live Series. Then, both Judy and Cadee Condit, Director, Government Relations, announced the State PAC Auction Fundraiser.

FRIDAY FUEL-UP FACEBOOK LIVE SERIES

Get set for the second episode of “Friday Fuel-Up” on September 3. Dr. Mike’s fascination with space will meet up with one of the few people on earth whose work extends from Antarctica to the International Space Station. APG OLYMPIANS MEDAL AT 2020 SUMMER OLYMPICS IN TOKYO Congratulations to our pistachio-loving Olympians who earned medals at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Of the four who made it to Tokyo, three medaled. Here are the results:

GREAT BRITAIN

Jonny Brownlee Triathlon Mixed Relay – GOLD Jonny Brownlee, a British professional duathlete and triathlete, completed his “trifecta” of a bronze, silver, and gold medals in Olympics! He also claimed a bronze at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

GERMANY

Erik Heil & Thomas Plössel Sailing Men’s Skiff 49er – Bronze This is the second bronze medal for Erik Heil and Thomas Plössel; winning their first at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

ITALY

Simona Quadarella Women’s 800m Freestyle – Bronze Simona Quadarella, won the bronze medal in the 800-meter freestyle, a specialty in which she is reigning as the vice world champion.


PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION PROMOTION IN GERMANY

With more than 750,000 consumers riding the trains and buses of Hamburg, Berlin and Munich each day, APG is using public transportation to promote American pistachios. From May through August, 500 posters are on display at the train stations, while city buses, wrapped with pistachios complete protein message, are traveling the main avenues of Germany’s largest cities.


U.S. FOOD SHOWCASE EVENT IN CHINA

APG exhibited at the U.S. Food Showcase event in China. Along with samples of American pistachios, nearly 100 information packets were distributed to the traders who visited the booth.

BAKERY ROUNDTABLE IN CHINA Representatives from China’s baking industry took part in the roundtable. APG participated with a booth and a presentation, which covered the American pistachios’ domestic retail market, as well as their use in baking and a 5-year export data report (2016-2020) that shows a steady increase of exports. Two of China’s top chefs demonstrated two desserts using American pistachios in APG’s booth: Pistachio Cheese Bread and Pistachio Cherry. Samples of the desserts were shared with booth visitors. The event generated

publicity that was viewed over 4.3 million times.


APG LAUNCHES INSTAGRAM IN SOUTH KOREA In South Korea, APG's Instagram platform went live in July. Over the next few months, APG is planning promotions to help spread American pistachios' health and nutrition message to South Korean consumers.


TOWNHALL WITH INDIAN DIETETIC ASSOCIATION APG organized a “Townhall on Pistachio Nutrition” with the Indian Dietetic Association in India (IDA). Leading health experts, nutritionists, fitness trainers, and doctors shared insights on the latest research on pistachios. Over 200 nutritionists and dieticians from across the country participated in the webinar. A press release about the webinar generated articles on several health and lifestyle online platforms. The articles

were viewed over 200 million times.


VIRTUAL VEGAN CONFERENCE IN INDIA

APG participated in the Virtual Vegan India Conference from July 24-27 with a virtual booth. Digitally created with a video, questions about pistachio nutrition and their availability were addressed from the booth. A highly engaged audience of over 1,000 joined in the Vegan India Conference over the course of 4 days.

SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCER PROMOTION IN INDIA Across India, a social media campaign to promote California-grown pistachios with fitness influencers is underway. The promotion kicked off July 1 and will continue through the end of August. To date, a targeted population of more than 250,000 gym goers and fitness enthusiasts have been reached.
