New Membership Benefit

The Board of Directors of the American Haflinger Registry announced a new membership benefit today. Beginning in January 2023, AHR members will receive a subscription to the Haflinger Journal as part of their regular membership. The magazine, which is published quarterly to promote the Pleasure Sport horse and Draft style Haflingers will be distributed directly to each member. The normal annual subscription to the magazine costs $38 but will be included in the regular $65 AHR Membership fee. The first issue of the magazine to be included to members will be the Annual Stallion issue published in January. To receive this issue, memberships must be renewed by December 31, 2022, to allow time for the membership mailing list to be updated and provided to the publisher, so do not miss the first issue and get your memberships renewed to take full advantage of this new member benefit.

In recognition of this new partnership, the publishers of the Haflinger Journal announced two special programs.

Stallion Cover Drawing

The publishers are offering stallion owners a chance to have their stallion on the front cover of the January issue at no cost. How do you take advantage of this offer? First, contact Marcus Chupp at 217 543 2015 to enter your stallion in the drawing. Then, if your name is drawn you will need to send a high quality photo to the Haflinger Journal by December 15, 2022. Qualification is easy: be a stallion owner and an active member of the AHR at the time of the drawing, then get your camera buzzing for that cover photo. The drawing for the winner will be held on November 19, 2022, at the Heart of America Haflinger sale.

Advertising Special for January Issue

In addition to the front cover drawing, the

publishers have announced a special for full page advertisements for the January issue. Full page ads that normally sell for $130 will be discounted to $115 for a single page ad and $110 a page for 2 or more pages.

The Board of Directors and the Haflinger Journal publishers are hoping to use this new partnership to continue promoting the breed and to keep AHR members informed about the activities of the Registry and the Haflinger horse. As always, the key to a successful magazine is content and the publishers have committed to publish show results, farm features, stories on events, competitions or just how you interact with your Haflinger at home or on the trail. The magazine will provide an avenue to get the story out to other Haflinger owners and potential Haflinger owners, so here is your chance to inspire others with your story of the Golden Horse.

2022 Inspection and Classification

The last weekend in September was sunny but brisk as Haflinger owners gathered at Hendershot Haflingers Nittany Mountain Farms for an Inspection and Classification. Exhibitors began arriving and checking in their horses on Thursday afternoon and we were pleased to welcome four new exhibitors to the classification process. Thursday evening after settling in the horses, all the exhibitors joined in for a cookout and dinner at the farm followed by a conversation and question and answer session on the inspection and classification process. The festivities had to be moved indoors as mother nature decided that we need a little watering, but after the brief shower she provided a beautiful set of rainbows that portended the beautiful Friday ahead.

Friday morning dawned to a cold sunny day with a strong wind that had all concerned happy that the presentation of the horses would take place in the Hendershot’s new indoor arena. Nine horses were scheduled for presentation and after conducting measurements in the chilling breeze everyone moved inside. We would like to thank our panel of judges for the inspection, Dave Ayers, Larry Thurber, and Ian Wengerd along with the scribe and ring man for the day Erwin Slabaugh. The event was well attended and in addition to the exhibitors and their teams, several horse enthusiasts from the surrounding area attended the event to see the Haflingers and to observe the inspection and classification process. a picnic lunch provided by Hendershot Haflingers and a chance to visit before the final group of horses were inspected.

The nine horses presented covered a large portion of the east cost with horses from Virginia (1) , Maine (2), and New York (6) presented. There were 5 mares ranging in age from 2 to 5 years in age. Two geldings were presented for inspection along with 2 stallions ranging in age from 3 to 15. The top scoring horse for the presentation was Nando’s Legacy a 5 year old stallion that earned 82 points and a gold classification. In addition, there were 6 horses that received silver ratings and two purple rated horses. The scores are summarized below for each horse and owner. We would like to thank everyone who attended and participated in this program because without Haflinger owners willing to present their horses there would be no classification. So, thank you to each of the exhibitors for all the hard work in preparing and presenting your Haflingers and congratulation on the great scores.

A full presentation of all the horses presented and classified will appear in the Haflinger Journal and the AHR Annual Yearbook. A second classification was held at Lake Erie College in August with two horses classified; however, the results were not available to the author at the writing of this article but will appear in the later publication.

AHR Sport Horse Futurity 2022

The 2022 AHR Futurity was held on August 27 at Lake Erie College Equestrian Center in Mentor Ohio. On behalf of the Board of Directors we extend our thanks to the Futurity committee (Erwin Slabaugh, Kathie Hanson and John Dunkel), our judge Mr. Larry Thurber, our photographer Kelly Loudin, our ring man Ervin Miller, to Lake Erie College and Pam Hess, our sponsors for the event and most importantly to all of the exhibitors that prepared and presented horses at the event. Overall, we had 36 entries presented across the three age groups weanling yearling and 2 year olds. A summary of the placings by class and the championships are presented below. Congratulations to all the exhibitors and thank you for bringing a fine group of horses to the futurity and making it tough on the judges. The Hitch futurity was held earlier in August at the Indiana State Fair with 21 entries. The results of this futurity along with photos will be published in the Haflinger Journal.

Haflinger Breeders’ Co Op Futurity 2022
