Integrity in our Actions.

Amenity Technology The name Amenity Technology, or Amtech for short, has for nearly 20 years been synonymous with cutting edge technology in the field of fine sports turf nutrition and maintenance.

For most of that time the company had been an independent supplier of product designed, developed and manufactured in the UK by Micromix. The majority of the products were targeted at the golf market in the UK and abroad. Top greenkeepers and groundsmen throughout the UK still recognise the Amtech brand as representing products that are both technologically innovative, and also deliver reliable and cost-effective results. In 2008 Micromix acquired the rights to the Amenity Technology name and full IP with the product range, and Mark Timberlake became its new MD. The company has since actively broadened the customer base to include many different managed turfcare companies, council contracting and support, a direct sales force and, not least of all, a keen distributor focus.

The operation is based at the Micromix factory at Langar in Nottinghamshire and factory visits are always welcome. AmTech’s intention is to build on its excellent reputation and all its products are formulated to the highest possible specifications, built up to a standard not down to a price. AmTech has plans to introduce many new products and concepts over the coming months and years, and is constantly investigating new raw materials and formulation techniques to further improve existing products. The company has already broadened its approach to encompass all types of sports and amenity turf and related products, and has introduced a range of herbicides and fungicides made possible through the formulation and packing work Micromix performs on behalf of many international agrochemical manufacturers.

PhosTop

A Phosphonate based nutrient product containing both Potassium and Phosphorous acid that has been clearly demonstrated to enhance disease control. Phosphonate and Phosphite technology is widely used to stimulate plant resistance systems particularly to Pythium and Phytopthera, with good control of downy mildew type diseases. It is widely used to supplement and extend conventional fungicide programmes as well as provide rootgrowth bio-stimulant nutrition to turf from new sowings to established turf.

CastClear

CastClear is a unique combination of organic sulphur and nitrogen nutrient materials that have been clearly shown to reduce worm-cast levels on sports turf. It deters worms from casting on the surface rather than killing or adversely affecting worm health. It uses a surfactant system that holds the nutrient into the upper soil structure providing good persistence of deterrent effect until it breaks down to provide nutrients absorbed by plant roots. When used in the autumn, earlier responses to spring fertilisation have been observed.

Vertigo

A unique blend of Silicon, potassium and micronutrients designed to strengthen the turf during periods of drought and heavy wear, and increase green speeds by creating a stiffer more upright sward. The product also raises the seed heads of poa annua in turf allowing more seed heads to be boxed off with mowing thus helping to stop spread. It is regularly used effectively as part of tournament preparation.

Seaweed Supplements.

All the SeaSpray products are based on a unique process that avoids high levels of heat during the extraction and formulation process; this is distinct from most competitor products which made from dried material that has been subject to higher temperatures that denature long-chain molecules. SeaSpray products are also made from only Atlantic-harvested Ascophyllum nodosum which is actively growing at the time of harvest.

EcoCube.

Offers a greener packaging solution for a wide range of amenity products. What is it?

What are the advantages for the distributor?

Finally after several years of trying different options we have found a bag-ina-box system of packaging that actually works for the liquid fertilisers for the amenity and sports turf industry. It is a container to replace the old 10 and 20 litre plastic Jerricans that are now such a problem to rinse and dispose of.

The EcoCube is 15 litres, so it is lighter and easier to handle than a traditional 20L jerrican or carton of 2 x 10L cans. It is very robust and resists damage from bad handling. There are 900 litres on a pallet, not the 640 litres usually found on a 32 x 20L pallet or 720 to 780 litres from a 2x10L pallet, so storage space is reduced, delivery space on trucks is reduced, and the boxes stack nicely so the pallet travels well, but most of all it is the greener credentials that will help sell products in this packaging; green miles are reduced by up to 40%!

Unlike many alternatives it combines the attributes of being both robust enough and cost-effective compared to conventional packaging. The multi-layer inner bags are made in Switzerland, and are actually shaped to the same dimensions of the carton, so they can be filled and stacked even before we put them in their carton. The carton has been nicknamed the “tank” it is so robust, and is easy to handle with cut outs for the neck and cap to pull through, (just like a wine box). It uses the big agricultural 63mm cap, and a tap can be fitted. We have been trialling different variations on the bag-in-a-box theme since 2003, and this is the first combination robust and user-friendly enough for us to commercialise. The bag itself is individually numbered for traceability and gusseted so it is the same shape as the interior of the carton, and the combination is being submitted for approval under the UN packaging testing scheme so it will be possible to pack materials classed as hazardous in it.

Integrity in our actions.

What are the advantages for the end user/operator? First of all, the flexibility of the packaging, it is easy to use and safer. The bag collapses as the liquid flows out of it, there is no air going in to replace the liquid coming out: So emptying is faster and completely without “glugging” reducing or eliminating splashing. Then it is easy to rinse, the bag has a shaped base so as it collapses you make a hole with a knife across the narrow part of the base and put a hose in the neck and it flushes readily, straight into the tank, and being fully transparent you can see it rinses completely clean. Then roll it up and put it in the plastic waste. No more piles of plastic cans for crushing and costly disposal!

The EcoCube generates only 8grams of recyclable plastic per litre of liquid! That compares with 41grams/litre for the conventional 10 litre jerrican, a saving of a massive 83% on plastic packaging! That’s not all, even compared with standard 2 x 10L cartons there is a 23% saving on cardboard used as well. If all AmTech’s liquid products were sold in EcoCubes then there would be a saving of a staggering twelve and a half tonnes of plastic and almost four tonnes of cardboard based on 2005 figures. Imagine the saving if everyone bought their liquid nutrients and marker dyes this way? Reduced carbon footprint and improved green miles from a fully-recyclable product make the EcoCube a winner!

And it’s exclusive to AmTech for the Amenity Sector.

EcoCube and Greener more Environmentally Friendly Formulations: Work greener, work faster, work more economically‌ Save the planet! Sixteen Amtech products are being re-formulated to make them more environmentally friendly to go in the EcoCube packaging. First of all the surfactant system is being changed to a non-ethylene releasing wetter, one that is environmentally benign, in fact it is sugar-based and bio-degrades to form additional plant nutrient. Secondly the products are being re-formulated to include new biostimulant technology that will speed uptake and movement of nutrients in the plant making the products more efficient in use, together with newer raw materials and technological advances that will allow moreconcentrated formulations. The result will be that many products in the new EcoCube will have a reduced application rate of only 15 litres per hectare to suit the new pack size. The further and even greater benefits of these new high-efficiency formulations will be in reduced water rates. The amount of water required per hectare will in most cases be reduced dramatically, right down from 600 to 300 litres per hectare. This will improve work rates dramatically with double the area being treated per fill of the sprayer, reducing travelling across your turf, reduced fuel, reduced carbon footprint, and radically improved efficiency. Get with the programme, go greener, save time, save money, save the planet, AND get better results with unique AmTech products in the EcoCube pack.
