The Red Dot Concept Design Award 2013 The world’s best designs of the year were honoured at the Red Dot Design Museum Singapore on October 25th, 2013 with winning designers who flew from across the globe, some as far as Russia, Brazil, Italy and Iran to receive the award during the celebrations. This year’s Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2013 received ideas and prototypes from all over the world, including product companies and design studios – a record 4,394 entries from 57 countries. Since its birth in 2005, the award has become an outlet for design teams and designers to showcase their latest research without customer constraint. With new categories increased to 24 spanning across a broad spectrum from public space, lifestyle to industrial needs, concept categories are deliberately wide to ensure limitless imagination, redefining new innovations and explanations. “The sheer number of entries demonstrate the amount of attention brought towards design concepts, that societies are spending more attention on product innovations” commented Professor Lu Xiaobo, Red Dot Jury 2013, “with more design entries exploring new possibilities, pushing the frontiers of innovations, new concepts and ideas for the next generation”. This year’s Red Dot: Luminary took a serious look at how one’s habitat can change the way of living for us and future generations, addressing sustainability and life in its most pragmatic way. Prof. Dr. Zec and Mr. Koo then concluded the ceremony with the unveiling of this year’s yearbook, a condensation of the competition and “collection of imagination and innovation”. Special exhibition of the winning concepts were also unveiled both physically at the Red Dot Design Museum Singapore and online at the Red Dot Award: Design Concept website. The yearbook and exhibitions are traditions of the Red Dot Design Awards, providing designers with a reference to the best in design.

AMeBE are winners AMeBE (ALESSANDRA MANTOVANI & ELEONORA BARBARESCHI from Italy) WINS “RED DOT CONCEPT DESIGN AWARD 2013” WITH THE PROJECT “LIETECH, emotional light experience”. With its outstanding, its strong emotional aspect and its innovative design, LIETECH managed to impress the jury of one of the most prestigious international design competitions. In the “red dot award concept design 2013” LIETECH was

awarded the “RED DOT” quality label for high design and innovation by the jury consisting of top-class experts. The festival awards presentation with hundreds of guests from the design, media and industry, took place in the Red Dot Design Museum in Singapore on October 25th, 2013. The trip to Singapore was made possible by an Indigogo corwdfunding campaign. At the award ceremony, only Eleonora Barbareschi was physically present, yet, through a virtual performance, Alessandra Mantovani remotely walked on stage through the magic of FaceTime. The on-stage performance was greatly enjoyed by the public and the jury. LIETECH will also be part of the online exhibition of the “RED DOT AWARD” for the duration of at least a year. Considered the great positive impact of the project and the success encountered, studio AMeBE are also evaluating/looking for possible sponsorships or collaboration with companies for the development of the concept.

AMeBE’s winning project: LIETECH LIETECH is a virtual lamp app generator that digitalises physical lamps and allows the design of new virtual lamps. The project is a social critique – a statement about consumerism and production in our post-industrial society.

Today’s nomad lifestyle of constant travel, movement, virtual connections, and physical distance brings new conceptions for living with objects and personal space. Intimate space becomes mobile and virtual. LIETECH responds to our emotional needs and the desire to carry intimate and familiar objects with us, transforming and breaking the boundaries and limitations of physicality. Given that light can coexist in our physical and digital realms without losing its emotional and scenographic impact, studio AMeBE approached light as matter, transforming digital devices into vehicles for a new way of being social. It is possible, they say, to talk about a ‘new technological emotivity’ – channelling and discovering new ways of emoting; a sort of contemporary miracle. LIETECH is a virtual lamp app generator (for lighting designers, creative individuals or the lighting industry) that allows you to test, publish, and then share your app in order to create a community-based collection of virtual lamps. It is a virtual lighting system that takes advantage of the hardware and light from digital devices, the potentials of software applications (apps), and the web. LIETECH uses mobile technologies to generate a romantic glow at any moment. LIETECH allows you, for example, to have a designer’s lamp on your PC screen, or a majestic chandelier on your television screen. While it might appear to be a paradox, within this project the simplest and most ancient of human discoveries – light – becomes part of a contemporary and innovative experience. The world does not need another physical lamp, with all the energy and material consumption that goes with it. LIETECH makes use of an existing source of light. Nothing more than light can transmit poetry and comfort, while responding to the contemporary trends of mobility, connectivity, lightness, interactivity, and optimisation of resources, while working within an open-source philosophy.

Finally the name LIETECH (the juxtaposition of the wording LIE, representing falsity or illusion + TECH, meaning technology or application) stands as the prevocational element of the project.

from a technological and economical point of view.

LIETECH is the experience of a positive technological illusion, as if the “virtual lamps” where to represent the disembodiment, the runaway souls of all the existing physical lamps. For us LIETECH is the resurrection of a physical object.

Economical: considering the manufacturing method, technology and use of materials, these concept can be produced at a reasonable price.

The Jury and the evaluation criteria

Emotional content: the concept offers many advantage to the users beyond its immediate practical purpose in terms of sensual quality, possibilities of a playful use or emotional attachment.

Technological: LIETECH can be produced in 1 to 3 years time.

Functionality and usefulness: the project fulfills all requirements of handling, usability, safety, and maintenance.

Impact: the project has a positive benefit/impact on the problem of consumerism and production of new lights/lamps.

The Cerimony

The highlight of the competition is the impressive awarding ceremony at the Red Dot Design Museum in Singapore. Situated in the central business district of Singapore, the Red Dot Design Museum annually receives more than 80,000 visitors and hosts more than 40 major events, making it one of the most popular place for international designers to showcase their success to the world. Every year, this gala attracts hundreds of guests from the design, media and industry who come to make important contacts. It is a night of celebration and an important highlight in the design calendar.

The Red Dot’s Online exhibition
