JUST A... MACHINE

Katarina Ambrosova Design studio project “Just a Monument Tutor: Jonathan Robert Maj Faculty of Architecture KU Leuven 1.IMA SS 2017/2018

“Industry has played a notable role in the rise of cities, drawing migrants into urban areas with jobs and boosting the productivity of capital and labor (Michaels, Rauch, and Redding 2012). Urban areas, in turn, have provided a fertile environment for industry to grow, offering economies of scale, sizeable labor pool networks for sharing information, and access to a diverse array of input and service suppliers (Annez and Buckley, 2008).” - The role of industry in green cities, IFIP 2015 At a certain point, i got fascinated by the production process that keeps our economy and society alive, though it´s lately being pushed out of european cities, out of urban tissue, out of our view to keep the city panoramas “nice and clean”. Erasing it from our visual environment does not mean it loses its importance. Pushing industryto the outskirts, “hiding its ugliness” also certainly in order to supress the pollution and transportation might yet also be in a way seen as putting a soft satin utopian overlay over the very essentials of an active city. An old industrial harbor site in Gent we were given is undergoing changes due to a new residential masterplan - just as a lot of other post-industrial sites around the Europe at this very moment. Instead of adjusting to this new residential-trend mood, how about to take a look at the evolution of small scale production and how does technologyaffected society reflects onto it? Dealing with a topic of a “monument” - in this case an old industrial factory arose a lot of questions about past, presence and future scapes of our cities. What is the difference between being a monument and being monumental? Can an object itself be a monument? Isn´t structure just a reminder of a deeper notion that is actually socially valuable? Is industry monumental?

“A hackerspace (also referred to as a hacklab, hackspace or makerspace) is a communityoperated, often not for profit work space where people with common interests, often in computers, machining, technology, science, digital art or electronic art, can meet, socialize and collaborate. Hackerspaces are comparable to other community-operated spaces with similar aims and mechanisms such as Fab Lab, men’s sheds, and commercial for-profit companies such as TechShop.”

“DOK is also a platform for creation and a workplace for DOCD residents, who shape the terrain with their own activities and events related to culture, sports, art, socio-cultural, ecology and well-being.”

“Hackerspace Gent (0x20) is a hackerspace in the wonderful city of Ghent, Belgium. It is a physical space run by a group of people dedicated to various aspects of constructive & creative tinkering. The hacker culture is a subculture of individuals who enjoy the intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming the limitations of current technologies to achieve novel and clever outcomes. The culture consists of, but is not limited to: computing, networking, programming, music, gaming, electronics, lock picking, woodworking, robotics, science fiction...”

“Public wood & metal workshop. Regular courses, lectures, membership & free use of the facilities and machinery.”

“Creates uniquely engaging opportunities for youth and their communities to shape the design of their cities. Working with our partners and clients, we develop inspiring curricula, transformative youth design leadership programs, innovative participatory community design tools”

Fåborg-Midtfyn (Denmark), 2014, Bath in the Port. (by Urban Agency) Aftermath of a spatial municipality reform from 2007. Faaborg has a population of just over seven thousand and a port in the fjord, Faaborg Havn, where ferries depart for near islands. Industrial and mercantile activity continues in the port although, nowadays, it also has leisure character. New public baths were built on a hand-shaped platform. Two building cover the public facilities (dressing rooms, storage and a café). Sauna included! The intervention represents a change of attitude towards city port areas. With deindustrialisation and obsolescence of their installations, many urban ports are losing their mercantile and productive nature and taking on a purely recreational dimension. This reconquest of such zones for leisure purposes usually entails the creation of exclusive, excluding spaces, as occurs with luxury marinas, inaccessible and representing a highly unsustainable model .

Copenhagen Harbor Bath - Isand Brygge (Denmark),2003 (by PLOT = BIG + JDS) Copenhagen’s harbour is in the midst of a transformation from an industrial port and traffic junction to being the cultural and social centre of the city. The Harbour Bath has been instrumental in this evolution. It extends the adjacent park over the water. It offers an urban harbour landscape with dry-docks, piers, boat ramps, cliffs, playgrounds and pontoons. As a terraced landscape, the Harbour Bath completes the transition from land to water. People go there in the way that people go to the beach rather than the indoor swimming baths. Not necessarily to exercise, but primarily to socialize, play and enjoy the sun. The land should also be geared towards a more accommodating and generous environment. The Harbour Bath is free of charge
