LETTER FROM THE

PUBLISHER New year, new goals! It’s time to recharge and manifest your dreams. In this issue, we are focusing on fashion, from haute-couture to ready to wear to accessories, makeup, hairstyle and lifestyle. Fashion is a statement, not a style. It is influenced by character and sophistication. Fashion does not have to be worn casually, nor outside the runway. Fashion is inclusive, for all sizes, for all colors and all ages. Fashion is an art of personal self-expression. Fashion is a constantly evolving industry and one of the largest industries in the world. In today’s technology driven society, social media has had a huge impact in influencing how you should look, what you should wear, listen or feel. I say: wear what you love!!! As a fashion expert, you can find me in a pair of jeans, Chelsea boots and a plain T-shirt. But on the red carpet, I definitely like to wear a suit to be ready for the camera. I would like to take the opportunity to say what a true artist our cover star, Michael Costello is. What an amazing journey it has been for Costello. Thank you Michael for sharing your story. I know many who read your feature will get inspired. I hope you all enjoy our Fashion Icon Issue and all our fashion powering players. MICHAEL a conversation with

A

Fashion Icon is merely one of the many terms we would use to describe this self-made, self-taught, superstar. Starting from humble beginnings to his work being worn on the backs of A-list Celebrities, this GypsyRoma raised designer is living proof that you can achieve anything you put your mind to. At just 15 years old, Michael began his journey as a fashion icon when he opened his first store in Palm Springs. Since then, he has been hustling his way to the top through sheer perseverance, which eventually landed him a Palm Springs Star on the Walk of Stars in 2017. This landmark, in a sense, epitomizes the accomplishments 25 | www.amaremagazine.com

Michael continues to garner as a game-changer in the fashion industry. Although his first official introduction to the world came in the form of contending on Season 8 of Project Runway in 2010, his growth and success beyond the show actually landed him a spot on the judges panel as a guest in Project Runway All Stars in 2018. It’s clear that he has a strong loyal fanbase that is not only enthralled by his work, but by him as a person. This revelation inspired us to dig deeper into the backstory, mind, and process of Costello, to discover all the elements that have contributed to his success.

In your words, how do you define fashion? Fashion is very personal to me. It has nothing to do with styles or trends that are over before we know it! Fashion is forever. I am constantly inspired by real women around me and the beauty of the feminine body. What you do truly empowers women and makes them feel beautiful. What specifically made you want to design dresses for women? People always ask me what inspires my designs and fuels my creativity or what made me want to design dresses for women and the answer is very simple‌ I am inspired by all essence of beauty! I think women from all walks of life are beauty, and that includes women of all ages, sizes, ethnic background, and more. When I design a dress, I like to first envision the woman wearing it - who she is, what her story is, where she’s going, etc. To me, I always get a sense of fulfillment not when a piece is complete but when I see a living and breathing human being wearing my collection! That moment is the finale it’s when everything comes to life!

Championship Tradition p.26 29 | www.amaremagazine.com

- MICHAEL COSTELLO

AMARÉ | FASHION

Do you recall a moment when you felt like giving up on becoming a designer? There are so many times I felt like giving up on becoming a designer! If I were to tell you about them all, we would be here for months, haha! All jokes aside, fashion is one of the most cutthroat industries in the world and to all the aspiring designers out there, please know that in order to “make it”, you have to not only be a talented designer but you also have to be a savvy businessman/woman and a self-marketing machine! You have to master your emotions in overcoming tons of disappointment and understand that nothing is going to happen overnight. There are no “overnight success” stories in fashion. I opened my first store at the age 15 in Palm Springs on Palm Canyon Drive and I have been working to build the Michael Costello empire ever since. I don’t have weekends off or holidays off because I run on the “Michael Costello Clock”. Anytime an A-List celebrity or a friend of mine calls me in need of a dress, I’m there for them. Even when I’m mentally or physically exhausted, I remind myself that I am very fortunate to be in the position I’m in now and so many are in line, wanting to replace me the second I’m gone! How did you manage to raise a son and pursue your dreams, at such a young age? Life happens when we’re busy making plans and I live a life of no regrets! I came from the GypsyRoma culture and I was in an arranged marriage at a very young age. I made two babies from scratch and when my ex-wife and I divorced and went our separate ways, she took our daughter and I got to keep my son - Giovanni. It sucks, and it’s truly horrible how the siblings have to be kept separate as the families don’t speak to each other anymore, but it’s part of the downside of my culture and when the time is right, I will reunite with my daughter again. I have been raising my son on my own and I feel responsible for his wellbeing. He has changed my life in ways I can’t even describe and in a way, he is my rock. Everything I do is for him and I want to provide opportunities for him that I did not have when I was his age.

AMARÉ MAGAZINE SPRING ‘19 | 30

How do you feel when you wake up each morning? What are your first thoughts? Every morning when I wake up, the first person I talk to is God. I thank Him for blessing me with another beautiful day to share the gifts and the blessings he has bestowed upon me in my life with everyone that I impact. I am so fortunate to have the means to provide jobs for my family and employees, and many of their livelihood depends on me. They all have their own daily lives, including families, people they’re responsible for, medical bills, etc. I am very lucky to have a platform to give back. I’m also grateful to all the women and customers who believe in our brand enough to give us their hard earned money. Out of all the fashion houses in the world, they chose Michael Costello to help make them look and feel as confident as they all deserve. You’ve mentioned that social media really played a big role in taking your brand to the next level. What advice would you give to entrepreneurs about how to effectively utilize social media to grow their brand? Social media truly took my fashion empire to the next level! I’m proud to say that I was the first fashion boutique to ever start selling dresses on Instagram, even before all the big fashion houses knew what to do with social media! I was first introduced to Instagram by one of my dearest friends - Lilly Ghalichi, who built her entire “glam” brand on the app! I started posting photos of dresses on there and I would receive so many sales requests every time I posted… this was all before Instagram’s algorithm changed. On January 26th, 2014, my life and Instagram changed forever when Beyonce wore me to the Grammys! (Shout-out to her stylist, one of my dearest friends in the world - Ty Hunter!) Thousands of the top designers in the world send pieces to a superstar like Queen Bey for one of the most important days of her career - the Grammys! I had absolutely no idea that out of the millions of pieces sent to her, she chose me until Ty posted a square black and white photo of the fabric of the gown! Then, as soon as Queen Bey stepped out to the red carpet, my social media feed blew up! Boom, boom, boom, boom… I got thousands of alerts per minute and my phone couldn’t keep up! I gained over 300K followers overnight and I couldn’t be more grateful for that moment! For anyone who wants to use the power of social media to grow their career, I would tell them that authenticity matters! Always be real! All my followers know that I do rant occasionally here and there when someone comes for me but you know what? I’m being honest and keeping it real! And nowadays, my funny rants and honest talks get as much engagement as my beautiful gowns! People can smell ingenuity from a mile away so make sure you are 100% honest with yourself and your followers.

31 | www.amaremagazine.com

One of the major shifts we see happening in the fashion & beauty industry today is increasing efforts to include more diversity in marketing. You being a brand that has always dressed many different shapes and sizes, why do you feel that brands are finally starting to embrace this - especially in fashion? The Michael Costello brand has always been a trailblazer in representing women of all shapes, sizes, age, ethnic background, skin tone, and more. When you look at all our campaigns, photo shoots and runway shows, we have always shown diversity. It is embedded in our brand, our DNA! I have always been inspired by beautiful women all over the world. I have always designed with the vision of our real-life Michael Costello customers, not the size 0 mannequins that are unattainable or relatable to our real audience! I’m so glad we live in a time where other fashion brands are finally waking up to exactly who their customers are and making a huge effort to celebrate diversity! I also feel that social media has played a big part in this movement. What is the thought process that goes into creating a custom dress for a specific client? Every time a woman walks into my showroom, I sit down with her and chat with her to get a feel of her story and her personality. I imagine her in the gown and I create the best designs that celebrate her body type! Everyone’s body is different and I’ve always been a firm believer that what you wear should work for YOU! In 2014, you launched a line of Ties and Bowties for men. Any plans of doing a full suit collection for Costello Menswear in the future? I do plan to do a lot more in regards to menswear… you are going to have to stay tuned! For now, I am so excited to share that I have a collaboration with Revolve, the biggest online e-commerce company in the world! We just launched so many new pieces for the season and we’re having trouble keeping the items in stock. I am so working on tons of new affordable designs for 2019! Stay tuned! What advice would you give to those who currently are not pursuing their passion but want to/are afraid to? To quote one of my favorite movies “A Bronx Tale” “The Saddest thing in life is wasted talent, and the choices that you make will shape your life forever.” We all have the same amount of hours in a day, and while not all of us are born with the same opportunities, I am a testament that your life is what you make it! I did not come from a fashion family and everything I have ever learned is self-taught. Anything can happen if you believe in yourself!

This bubbly personality will win you over with her big heart

and outgoing soul. Gina Kirschenheiter openly shares her life as a mom and how she settles into her new ‘normal’ from being recently divorced on The Real Housewives of Orange County. She had a very typical middle-class upbringing stating “Parents who loved me more than anything. I was an athlete. Gina points out that being a mom has been her ultimate treasure in life. Her most defining moment in life was “Giving birth to my first born son for sure. Any mom can tell you the birth of your children is epic but the birth of your first is a life-defining moment.” Raising her family has shaped the way she views and leads her life as she mentions “Before littles, it’s ALL ABOUT YOU! You’re the one that someone else is responsible for, worries about and loves unconditionally. You are selfish and that is expected because let’s face it, you have no perspective. Children are just that, perspective. Perspective wrapped up with the most intense love you have ever felt for anyone”. Gina expresses how she stays confident throughout the major transition of divorce with her family and making it through. She stays positive and says that when going through a tough moment always take the high road and leave your pride at the door. As Gina’s favorite fashion icon says

“I am my own experiment. I am my own work of art.” Gina has loved being a part of The RHOC and is excited to do it again stating “I would like viewers to know that I went into my first season very organically and honestly and really just open and I intend to do it the same way this next season. As we forge ahead through 2019, those of us committed to our new

year’s resolutions do so with the intent to improve various aspects of our lives or advance goals and dreams. Casey Kim, entrepreneur, make-up artist and microblading specialist, is living her dream of doing what she loves for a living and would encourage us to follow our heart and trust that life’s true purpose will be revealed to us as well. The key is to ignore the naysayers and to believe in yourself. Casey embodies what it means to be a BOSS! But, her journey to achieve success as an entrepreneur has not been without its obstacles. Born and raised in South Korea, Casey realized her love for make-up in the second grade, but growing up, her family had mixed feelings about her budding interest in cosmetology. Her mother was an inspiration and support to Casey, however, her father neither encouraged nor supported his daughter’s creative interests. When the family moved to Hawaii in 1989, he took a strict approach to raise their daughters and highly discouraged creativity and the impractical notion of chasing dreams. How could Casey believe her dreams of being a make-up artist was possible when her own father did not believe in her? Casey continued to move forward in her career despite her father’s persistent skepticism. Resilient and courageous, she battled with insecurities planted and cultivated by her father at such a young age. These insecurities, however, would grow smaller each day now with years of experience into her journey. Today, Casey’s clients seek her out for her micro-blading expertise, enhancing their eyebrows, so that they can look and feel more beautiful. It is during these beauty sessions, Casey is able to be fully present with her clients and a higher purpose is revealed, connections formed, and friendships are born. Applying her talent as a make-up artist while sharing stories of life through laughter, heartbreak, or inspiration creates an experience that allows Casey to support and bond with her clients in a very special way- a gift for which she and her clients are grateful. Casey affirms, “I know that I am using my gift from God to serve others and do what I know best.” Seeing this dream as a possibility, she has stood firm in faith. A shining example of what can be achieved for any of us if we just believe.

CAT LEVY DIAMOND CO Cat Levy is a mother, friend, wife, artist, entrepreneur, and visionary, but most importantly she is a woman that is transforming the diamond industry forever.

She believes there is no shortcut to success and she encompasses the drive, passion, motivation, vision, and creative genius of a true artist. Each piece she creates is done in a meticulous creative manner, and is a true reflection of who she is. A beautiful soul that believes in lifting up other humans with her sparkle, in the eclectic streets of Los Angeles. Cat started this creative journey exploring different ways to create very personalized and specific pieces of jewelry for family, friends, and acquaintances. Before she knew it, her business took on a life of its own and she was designing

worldwide. Her work is very personal to her. She creates each piece selectively, considering each client and the unique, rare beauty that each stone encompasses. The biggest challenge in her industry is to find the balance. She works diligently to be able to make sure each piece is handcrafted perfectly. The look can be trendy, classic, or traditional. She can make a memory out of whatever piece you are looking for, whether it’s that engagement ring you have been dreaming of or a dainty piece of jewelry for a daughter, friend, or sister. When asking Cat if there is a certain creative place she needs to be in to be able to work and create, she replied with, “ I am a very observant person. I like to take in what’s around me. Anything can be an inspiration if you see the beauty in everything.”

Her mission is to be able to lift others up and help them through her work, designing pieces that will move your soul and represent who you are. She believes in lifting people up and working together for opportunities and growth. She does this through supporting her local community by building a business that is located in the heart of Los Angeles and helps support other local artisans and craftsmen within the area. Each piece that is created is a journey and each client has the option to design the piece alongside Cat, picking out each stone, cut, and color of the piece that is being created for their loved one. When asking Cat what her thoughts are about the future of lab-created diamonds, she responded by saying, “Call me old fashion if you will, but for me, diamonds are not just made out of the chemical composition. The LOVELY ROAD

to Cookieteria

Article by Rosa Erika Lopez Salcedo

My name is Erika Lopez

(some call me Lovely) and I was born in a little town named Mascota in Jalisco, Mexico. I started decorating cookies around seven years ago just as a hobby while I was working in an office doing Accounts Payable. I wanted to bake cookies for my daughter but couldn’t find the design I wanted, so I sketched my first design in a disposable plate and used it as a stencil to hand cut all three dozen. It took me the whole night to finish them. Later my dad needed back surgery back in Mexico and I was no longer working and needed money to help my brothers and sisters to pay for it. So, I started offering cookies to every person I knew, suddenly I found myself in my home kitchen decorating 60-70 dozen cookies a week…it was tiring but I was able to help my parents. I’m a true believer that the more you help your parents the more blessings you have. I didn’t finish school and I barely made it to middle school. I feel that I don’t need a diploma to validate my work and not having one is not going to stop me from getting to where

L

@cookieteriaby_lovely

I’m going. I spent long nights in my kitchen without any sleep just baking and decorating cookies, with one thing in my mind: having my own shop. I was determined to make it happen even if I missed my family parties and gatherings. Some people criticized me for that, some people didn’t believe in me, some said that “it was just cookies”, but it is more than just cookies, to me it is art and every cookie has my secret ingredient: ‘MERAKI’. With the help of my husband, we found the name: Cookieteria by Lovely, (Cookieteria is just “Spanglish” like saying galleteria) I registered the name. I will admit I was scared to fail, but regardless, I rented a place, made it pretty, and after long nights and even longer hand cramps, I was able to have my grand opening in West Covina on June 10th, 2018 with the help of my husband and cousin. And just like that Cookieteria by Lovely was born.

BUILDING HER

EMPIRE By Jewel Flores

THERESA ROEMER

young girl came into her own existence. Theresa Roemer was diagnosed with rheumatic fever numerous times as a child, which led her to develop a heart murmur. After being told she was a sickly child, Theresa decided during that time, she would not let her condition define her reality and future. She gained responsibility at an early age by growing up on ranches and having chores. Theresa, however, suffered from family abuse which fueled her determination to grow up differently and develop a desire to help others. She grew up wearing second-hand clothes from her cousins which grew her desire of fashion and clothes. When asked who her ultimate fashion icon is she says “Christie Brinkley. Growing up I was told I held a resemblance to her and as she modeled and graced many magazines my desire to be like her grew”. Her must-have fashion staple in her closet is a pair of black stilettos and a great handbag, I honestly couldn’t agree more! Theresa’s sheer determination propelled her to become a world-class athlete. Being told that she was a sickly child gave her the tenacity to go against what everyone said as she states “I went against everyone’s wishes and started running and jumping and playing sports as a way to change that. I basically got into fitness to save my life...even as a child and not having the knowledge of how it would help me, I chose to not want to stay inside and lay around and be different, I just wanted to be a normal child and get to play outside”. Theresa shares her beliefs in what keeps her strength so strong, “from God and my faith. Also after going through so much grief myself, I have learned that there is no reason to have a pity party because there is always someone that has it much worse off than you do. Just when you think your story is the worst, someone has it worse off than you do. As I said, you can’t let the grass grow under our feet, this is the real deal it is not a dress rehearsal, you are only given one chance on this earth. Leave your mark”. Building her own empire, Theresa mentions that this year will be her year to shine on a new reality show, which is still a little secret so stay tuned!

USING FASHION GALAS TO

LEAVE A LEGACY

Fashion icons have a lot of influence, and it’s exciting to see

how they use that influence for good. But using fashion as a power for good isn’t just for celebrities and designers. In fact, everyone from entrepreneurs and CEO’s to charities and community organizations can leverage the power of fashion to make their mark by throwing a fashion gala. Leaving a legacy is about more than just writing a check. It’s about creating a space to increase awareness, influence, and impact, inviting others to join in the movement, and bringing like-minded people together to create positive change. A fashion gala can accomplish all that and more. If you have a cause, charity or movement and you want to make a difference and leave a legacy for them, fashion galas should be on your list. Many companies and CEOs have turned to me to help them produce and host fashion galas over the years. These are a unique type of event that needs expert planning, which is why I wanted to share a few of my secrets to help you get started. First, it’s important to find the right venue. A location that is large enough for your audience, a stage and all the extras that go with this type of show and the right ambiance to match the theme is all part of choosing the right venue. Next, be sure to assemble the right team to support your gala. This includes a master of ceremonies, people in charge of donations, an auctioneer for raffles or prizes, vendors, models, professionals for lighting, sound, makeup, hair, photography, and video. Most important of all, though, is the producer. This must be a person who understands the legacy you want to leave and doesn’t just support it but has a true passion for using this gala to truly make a difference. The right sponsors are also key to a gala’s success. The right people, companies, and organizations can elevate your gala’s impact even more. Finally, you can plan the most fabulous gala in the world, but if people don’t know about it, it won’t make a difference. An experienced fashion gala producer will include promotion experts who will create the right branding for the event and get the word out through social media, marketing, and advertising. If you want to learn more about leveraging the power of a fashion gala to create a legacy and lasting impact for what you’re passionate about, please feel free to reach out to me so we can see if we are a good fit.

It was just as frustrating for me as a doctor to

see patients eat right and exercise but still have stubborn fat that would not budge from their belly, arms, thighs, backs or chin. Despite going to the gym several times a week, eating low carb and trying weight loss medications and supplements, the weight would not budge! That’s where as a doctor, I understood how genetics, hormones, and stress have so much to do with “resistant fat” - the type of fat you couldn’t tap into it - even if you were doing everything right. That’s when I started performing Smart Lipoliposuction in the office….awake with slight oral sedation to relax you….painless…instant results... and patients were able to go back to work the next day! Smart Lipo was performed by making tiny incisions in the skin where local anesthesia is injected into the areas to be treated. After that laser energy is applied beneath the skin, and fat is extracted using extremely small liposuction cannulas. You literally see the fat getting sucked out of you! It is surreal that it is real. AND it I less expensive than most treatments that don’t suck out fat but rather “freeze or melt” fat! Was it cheating? NO Was it lazy? NO, it was for people who worked hard but still needed fat loss in resistant areas and body contouring. When people look good, they feel good. And helping them lose weight with my MD supervised diet along with Body contouring with Smart Lipo gave patients the confidence they needed and deserved. WWW.SUSACHARMD.COM

INDIRA HODZIC

BOSNIAN BOSS BEAUTY

Nichelle Medina IBy Photography Jody Lynn Photography

In a world increasingly fixated on looks and wellness, one

She credits her enviable good looks to three things: Dedication to finding solutions to problems that can interfere stunning Bosnian beauty is changing the game in Southern with ones emotional and physical success, her mission to California. One look at Indira Hodzic and you can clearly improve self-esteem, and partnering with a break-through see she is a woman who takes excellent care of herself. At 31 years old, she has built with her partners a premiere beauty organic skincare line, Nelly De Vuyst. spa in San Diego and Rancho Cucamonga California and Washington State. 51 | www.amaremagazine.com

Adding this European line is the latest in a series of decisions Hodzic has made to shape her vision of building a powerhouse Spa . “I am grateful to be living the American dream,” she says. Her path to success was shaped when she and her family escaped the wars that ravaged Bosnia-Herzegovina following the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. “The most vivid and impressionable memories in my life are the ones from that time.” She recalls the last night she spent in her family home before fleeing for their safety. “I lost family and so many others that were close to my heart. I knew at the age of 6 we had to leave everything behind in order to be free, a concept that I couldn’t grasp back then but today that concept is what drives me to help others. We were one of the fortunate families that made it safely to Germany and stayed there for a short period of time and then our family headed to Washington.” Her parents tried to put the trauma of war behind them and began to lay the foundation for the family to live the American dream by building their own business. It was there that Hodzic developed her strong work ethic. “I was in a country of opportunity. My brother and I watched our parents wake up early every morning seven days a week and work all night to pursue their dream to provide a good life for us all. Like all beginnings, it wasn’t easy but after time they were able to provide a loving safe home for us. It was a great life, but I knew I wanted something more. My parents had laid the foundation and now it was mine to pursue.”

The spa operator and consultant have used many breakthrough products on her clients. Last year, Hodzic discovered Nelly De Vuyst, which she considers a game changer. The products are sold in more than 25 countries in over 4,000 locations worldwide. Hodzic’s spa is one of the select businesses in Southern California that carries the line. “Nelly is a hidden gem, a nextgeneration product that can literally change a face.” The premium skincare brand has a reputation as one of the most effective, anti-aging and corrective lines on the market that is compatible with all medical esthetic practices and great for all skin types. “What I had found is that I don’t have to treat a client with an aggressive peel or laser, Nelly achieves the same result.” The product line is for men and women. Nelly can treat everything from burns, fine lines, cellulite, acne, and (sounds too good

to be true) can even make botox last longer. “From the start, I was impressed with the results patients were getting. I can be skeptical about a new product, but this is the gold standard for a new age of beauty,” adds Hodzic. The aesthetic industry particularly the nonsurgical aesthetic industry is exploding. It is a market Hodzic is excited to grow with. This tenacious Bosnian beauty knows the importance of following what she believes in and not compromising her beliefs to do so. This is the first product that Hodzic has ever backed since opening the spa. Like her parents, she is not afraid of hard work, as long as it is for the right cause and Nelly De Veyst is just that.

The stage was set for this ambitious beauty to conquer the world. During and after college, Hodzic worked for a large corporation of medical spas. In a few short years, she became a manager for this major spa chain. It was there that she discovered her passion. “I realized women feel their best when they look their best. Treating a client isn’t just about botox and fillers, it’s about bringing inner confidence to the surface. I can see a physical and spiritual transformation right before my eyes.” Seven years ago, the hard-working beauty fulfilled her own dream of having a spa. Hodzic’s main focus centered around finding a way to bring skin care services to the masses, in a different way.

Nelly De Vuyst® products are based on 3 principles: the Diadermic Method to allow better and more effective skin penetration; compounds allowing quick, noticeable or “instant” results; and protective or “anti-aging” compounds to prevent further damage.

AMARÉ MAGAZINE SPRING ‘19 | 56

I f we had to choose one quote to describe the journey

to becoming the multifaceted, extremely talented, “Vonzell Solomon”, we would say “Staying true to yourself and keeping a positive attitude is the key to reaping uncompromising success.” Vonzell’s story is a perfect example of what it means to go after your dreams and to not settle for less than you deserve. At the age of only 11 years old, she had her sights set on becoming a singer and never strayed from that path. Today, Vonzell aka “Baby V,” is revered not only as an internationally known singer, but a songwriter, model, actress, producer, and second runner-up on the 4th Season of the hit FOX TV series, American Idol. This road however was not an easy one to travel. Many of us can probably relate to the emotional setbacks along the way that at times discourage us from pursuing our dreams Vonzell was no exception. Not all were too welcoming or supportive of her ambitions when the singer started performing in and around her hometown. “It hit me hard in high school when people who I thought were my ‘friends’ started ‘hating’ on me. I really had to pray about it because it really hurt my feelings.” says Solomon when asked how she dealt with the naysayers. This comes as no surprise as the singer revealed to us that having a low self-esteem was one of the biggest struggles she had to overcome. However, this did not thwart her as she found that keeping a positive mindset was the key to pushing forward. “My father has been my sensei in martial arts since I was five, he always taught me self-discipline and to not give in to negativity that’s going on around you.” 57 | www.amaremagazine.com

Today, that positive attitude and parental support has amassed Vonzell more accomplishments than she anticipated as she is now the CEO of her own independent record label. “Owning my own company was not something that I had dreamt of doing.” said the record label owner. “My dad (who was managing me at the time) and I realized that they didn’t have much more to offer us than we had to offer ourselves, so my dad suggested we start our own label and that’s what we did! Still to this day, it was the best thing I could’ve done. I’ve had offers to sign deals but never any that were worth signing my life away or compromising my morals for.” That unwillingness to compromise and staying true to herself continues to be the strong foundation that keeps Vonzell grounded and centered in her faith. “I’m unwilling to sacrifice or compromise on my morals which consist of my love for Christ, family and friends!” Vonzell has become the bold, beautiful, and bountiful woman she is today by staying true to herself and never forgetting where she came from. Her path continues to inspire us and many around the world who recognize her not just as an American Idol, but a role model. “What motivates me to keep going is my love for music and to be able to use my gift to touch hearts and lives around the world.” says Solomon. You can keep up with and expect to hear new music from Vonzell by visiting her website at vonzellmusic.com and following her on instagram at @VonzellSolomon.

Suki Bijoux jewelry is designed and created with the goal of complimenting women, to help them feel confident, beautiful, happy, and complete. Life definitely appears to be in catch up mode for these two. “We took photographs and posted them on social media to announce to friends and family that our family was growing once more. We immediately received private messages expressing how our story affected them in a personal way. It was during this time that I realized just how much our story could have a positive impact on other people who are going through the same challenges that both Joe and I went through starting a family as a gay couple.”

A story where we, two men will open the doors to the past for the first time and visit those two little boys that didn’t think they would ever find themselves, family acceptance, love, and fatherhood. We would love to share in humble transparency our obstacles and blessings with others that will be walking this life along us! “Our family dynamic is living in a resilient and exciting time with lots of newfound challenges on how to raise children in a world that is struggling with equality. Our living journey will be on how to prepare our children to be the forefront of this long time in the making movement.”

Victor adds, “We can only hope to make a deeply moving documentary as a resource that will ignite conversations in all homes. Our goal is to remind everyone we are all the same; making a difference in society is why we are doing this. We were terrified to come out, we were terrified to share pictures together on social media and we are terrified to make a documentary. We are not a couple to wonder “what if” …at least not anymore. Once we decided to share our lives in transparency on social media, we were contacted by multiple “Just because you’re gay doesn’t mean you cannot be married, have a friends and family members. They were in dire need of a family, and live the ideal “American dream.” My wish is to share our resource in helping address a loved ones “coming to terms” story with others, and spark hope!” with their sexuality. They desperately reached out to us and asked if they could share our Facebook pages and be available Victor and Joe are the subject of a feature documentary for mentorship in an attempt to empower their “time of need” that is currently in the development phase that will allow them and redirect what was being felt as a weakness into a positive to empower those struggling with coming out. direction! Joseph states “We try to celebrate life to the fullest; the road to this blessed place we are in was not an easy one. We were raised in traditional Mexican loving families with long standing traditional values, in a society where from day one we were in a search to find where our love would fit into the boxes that were presented to us as boys. We both would find ourselves walking separately on a very challenging and sometimes defeated journey. As men, this destination would ultimately be a place where the discovery that love comes to all humanity and does not judge or fall into a category that society places on you. Though there are thousands and thousands of life stories like ours, DOS PADRES (Two Fathers) is our story.

The two fathers inspire that there comes a day where real life true gay stories will not have to be subject to punishment, nobody needs to get sick, there doesn’t have to be a wife to tell, nobody should get bullied and there should be no automatic family disownment. Joseph closes with, “Everyone deserves love and acceptance. The Dos Padres Project is dedicated to our children and their future. A future of perseverance, passion, equality, triumph and most importantly LOVE!” You can follow the men’s story and connect by following their Facebook Link; Dos Padres Documentary at WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/DOSPADRESDOC/ Instagram @dos_padres_ documentary AMARÉ MAGAZINE SPRING ‘19 | 68

The Florida Keys By Jewel Flores

Picture yourself in front of an amazing sunset, the orange,

yellow, and pink hues seem as if they are popping out of the sky like starbursts. In the middle of the majestic horizon lies a large golden sun and it is so big that your eyes cannot look away. It captures your soul and ignites a sense of wonder that leaves you absolutely mesmerized. Until now, you think to yourself “why have you never seen such a majestic sunset before”, and that is how I felt sitting on the beach shore of Key West. The Florida Keys are a series of islands spanning over 110 miles connected by 42 bridges and causeways. The most popular stop is all the way at the bottom tip which is the largest of the islands known as Key West. The three-hour drive from down the Florida Keys Overseas Highway will have you enamored with its gorgeous blue waters that make you feel as though you are driving on water. Along the way, you will meet all the islands that make up the Florida Keys with each having its own unique character that entices you to adventure out and sightsee. The first and largest island you will encounter is Key Largo, known for its star attraction the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first underwater preserve in the United States. Continuing on the road, you will see the rest 69 | www.amaremagazine.com

of the islands in between which are Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key, and the Lower Keys. Islamorada, considered to be the sports fishing capital of the world, is popular for its diversity. It is a perfect playground for adults featuring co-tours, water sports equipment rentals, tennis facilities, bicycle trails, historic hikes and beautiful romantic vistas of both the Atlantic Ocean and Florida Bay. Each island offers its special wildlife habitat preserves as well as fun water and nature activities which are worth to explore. Here you will find tiny, colorfully restored homes where thousands of cigar workers lived in the 19th century. Filled with character, Key West will have you mesmerized and will immediately capture your heart. Take a walk down Duval Street and admire the charismatic New Orleans style homes and enjoy delicious seafood at any of the local restaurants. Warwick, opened in September 2013 on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, California, is a two story, modern cocktail and bottle service lounge that incorporates both bar and nightlife elements. Patrons enjoy classic cocktails and modern mixology creations within a meticulously designed and curated space that is refined and exclusive yet also comfortable and unpretentious. Since opening, Warwick has received widespread acclaim in the press and social media and has attracted a loyal, star-studded and international group of regular clientele. Warwick spans two levels: a large, ground floor space accented by elevated decks in each of the room’s four corners, a prominent stage at the front of the room, and a U-shaped bar for counter service. A cozy, intimate mezzanine area overlooks the main floor while also providing additional seating in a slightly quieter environment. Warwick’s design aesthetic blends old and new materials and design styles in order to create a sense of timelessness and unpredictability. Wooden plank flooring from Frank Sinatra’s former home and bricks reclaimed from a demolished, 130 year old church mix seamlessly with whimsical objets d’art and modern furniture pieces. Gallery-lit paintings and photographs line the walls via continually rotating installations and exhibitions, and the same sense of constant change is reinforced in the venue as a whole, which completely overhauls its design scheme from top to bottom on a regular basis. The Warwick’s bar program showcases the artisanal techniques and meticulous attention to detail typically found only in small craft cocktail bars. Beverages served over the bar or by tableside cocktail bottle service make use of the venue’s fruit and vegetable juices, squeezed and pressed daily from fresh market produce. The Warwick prepares its fresh ingredients in the “Warwick Workshop”, a restaurant-style kitchen devoted solely to the development and production of cocktails. For info and table reservations visit www.warwickla.com
