Figures from the ONS show that between 2001 and 2017 the number of self-employed people in the UK increased by 1.5 million. A reason often cited by those moving to self-employment is a desire to earn more. Unfortunately, this doesn’t necessarily happen. Figures by Glassdoor indicate that the average freelancer earns £13.04 per hour. So why are the rates this low? When working out the hourly rate, these studies take the total income and divide by 52 weeks and 7.5 hours a day to provide an hourly or weekly rate. As a freelancer or solopreneur however, unlike an employee, not all of your time can be billed. This is why many self-employed and freelance business owners feel trapped. Having left jobs for a more flexible lifestyle, we discover we are having to work just as hard if not harder, earning less money. All we want is to run a successful business, with more money than we would have achieved as an employee. It doesn’t have to be this way.
