NC, the self-confessed introvert, brings joy and beauty into the very fabric of the building and into the creation of his food. Visit Tredici to share some of this love!
THE DREAM
N
C wanted to have a restaurant or a hotel from a very early age. The dream of surrounding himself in an environment filled with beautiful things was constantly with him. One early dream of opening a restaurant / deli / night club was firmly quashed by his wife who refused to be the wife of a night club owner – and rather than suffer a nasty divorce, NC opted for the quiet life in Swellendam! NC and his wife Wilma, (and their delightful twins – one of each) were living in Europe when they came home to SA for a Christmas holiday. They drove past the site where Tredici now stands. At that stage it was a small used car dealership going up for auction. “That evening around the braai - the usual thing you do as a South African abroad, braaing every night when on holiday in your home country - having downed several glasses of vino, it looked more and more like the perfect spot to start this dream” Without further thought, they went ahead and purchased the property. And so the dream became reality. Travels After family and business – NC’s greatest love is travel. “I need to see, experience, live where-ever I go on my travels, be it local or abroad. I call it strict market research which is of utmost importance in the restaurant business - and therefore I eat and drink my way through each and every country I experience.” Everything the customer encounters at Tredici is a reflection of highlights from NC’s travels. He constantly make changes as he learns more from new places he visits around the world. Having an efficient back up system allows him to travel frequently - “a super fantastic management team and absolutely great staff who I can leave here, knowing that they share my belief in the brand and will always maintain the highest of standards”. Wilma shares his passion for travel and they use every single moment
they can to go and see and experience the world, with or without the kids, who also love to travel, though sometimes school commitments get in the way. Luckily they have amazing grandparents who happily look after them when Mom and Dad get the urge to travel! The Person behind the Disguise Behind the bubbly personality presented to the world, there lurks a very shy person. One who won’t answer the phone if he doesn’t know who’s calling – even if it’s to make a reservation at his stunning restaurant. He confesses that he has been lost many times when exploring new places as he would never dare to ask for directions. He would rather switch audible Google Maps on his phone, put it in his pocket and pretend he is listening to his inner voices as he wanders around! He needs to spend quiet times alone to recharge his batteries to keep up the appearance of an outgoing confident person. This disguise is something he wears very well indeed! And he needs to, because the most important thing to NC is to “be the brand”. He personally chooses everything that the customer eats, drinks, sees and experiences in his shop and he chooses them because he loves them. He likes to be original and set trends – and refuses to imitate others. This is why to spend time there as a customer is a uniquely rewarding encounter. “It may sound like a cliché but I love selling the ‘whole experience’ at Tredici. Whenever you buy something – it is a piece of me you’re buying. Future plans at the moment are very hush hush, but watch this space: You will experience a lot of ‘me’ in future. I want to share a lot more of my love for everything beautiful” Swellengram

“Where best friends meet, and new friendships are forged” Festive Holiday Greetings to you all! This is a special time of year at “Woodies”, as we are affectionately known, offering a vibey and “no frills-no fuss” experience, with friendly waitrons and consistently good food. Our menu consists of a variety of thin based pizzas, tasty pasta and salad dishes, homemade burgers and scrumptious chicken schnitzels. We offer a variety of local wines and craft beers too. If you have room for dessert, our delectable chocolate volcano is a winner! Also a variety of coffees and liqueurs are available to complete your meal. Many travellers with young children are welcomed with pizza dough and smarties to create their very own dessert, and are provided with crayons and colouring books to help keep them seated and occupied with their parents. Tablets and other devices can be linked to our free Wi-Fi service too. Our four legged friends on leashes, are welcomed with a fresh bowl of water and love!

Our kitchen trading hours through December and January are as follows: Monday to Saturday from 11:30 - 21:00, Sundays 11:30 -17:00 We look forward to welcoming you to our restaurant during this festive holiday season of 2017. Net vir Pret is
PETER’S DREAM
“To have a creative and safe space for children where they can enjoy themselves and develop to their full potential,” this was the dream of Barrydale resident Peter Takelo many years ago. Working as a child development professional in Cape Town, Peter had started a Blikkies Band in Barrydale with small children making music on biscuit tins and oil cans. On a cold day in April 2002 he met Ann Harries who shared his enthusiasm for working with children during after-school hours. They jointly decided to start an organisation to fulfill Peter’s dream and Net vir Pret – which means Just for Fun in Afrikaans – was born.
Net vir Pret works with children and youth from deprived communities in the Overberg (Barrydale/Swellendam Municipal Area), including those on the farms. Building self-esteem, self-development, confidence, and a sense of responsibility among these children by providing activities which help to break the cycle of poverty, domestic violence and alcoholism/drug misuse within the family and community is
the aim of Net vir Pret. By offering after-school, weekend and vacation activities, children and youth are kept off the street and out of danger. Offering opportunities for them to develop individual skills and talents and to help them prepare for life after school is key. Reconciliation Day Parade - This landmark annual arts event draws puppeteers, musicians, performers and public not just locally but from all around the world, to work with the local children to celebrate and explore powerful, relevant issues of community, conservation and heritage through the art of puppetry. Past parades have told stories of Khoi traditional and cultural beliefs, of slavery, of relationships between people and the earth on which we live. This year the focus is on the devastating effect of rhino poaching – and how international poaching syndicates are systematically preying on our most endangered large animal, the rhinoceros. Rieldans – Peter’s aim in life is to reconnect young people with their cultural heritage and their roots. The Khoikhoi had a rich culture and spirituality, but they were very vulnerable to the encroachment of the first European settlers who arrived after 1652. Peter uses the medium of dance and music to bring young people a sense of pride in their heritage. He teaches them rieldans –an ancient celebratory dance performed by the San (or Bushmen), Nama and Khoi. It is considered one of the oldest dancing styles of indigenous South Africa. Danced at an energetic pace and demanding very fast and precise footwork it tells stories of daily life as well as celebrating ancestors and relationships with nature and animals imitating animals like baboons, ostriches, snakes and meerkat. A Thing of Beauty One Last Story From Mrs Gram
W
e had only been living in Swellendam for two days when we employed Beauty. She has since made it her mission in life to teach me how to behave like a ‘Madam’ should. She despairs of my tendency to scruffy clothing and she takes care to point out to me the local ladies who are dressed like ‘proper’ Madams. (This usually involves floral skirts worn decently at calf length, and hip length over-blouses). Sadly, it appears that Beauty herself has become corrupted by my casual approach and now owns several pairs of calf length jeans (which come down to her ankles as she is vertically challenged) and strappy tops. Apparently, because she lives in Swellendam, says Beauty, this is okay as her husband’s more traditional Xhosa family live in George, so can’t see her and “the ancestors are looking the other way”. Having Beauty and her family - Simon and their two daughters, Nolyvuyo and Nosphosihle Amanda in our lives has been an enrichment in many more ways than just having a wardrobe full of perfectly ironed clothes. She is a bright woman who left school early, and never considered herself intelligent. Her command of Afrikaans is equal to that of her mother tongue Xhosa. Although she now speaks full idiomatic English, with a cut glass English accent, initially there were some misunderstandings. She came to work one day saying, “we (her friends and neighbours) had a long discussion about appetite yesterday, it was very upsetting, I am feeling very, very sad today”. As Beauty is quite a traditionally built African lady who enjoys her food tremendously, we were puzzled as to why appetite was a potentially tragic story. It was some time before we worked out she was referring to Apartheid. That Googly thing … There have been some other misunderstandings regarding language and culture. Beauty came up with the idea to provide Xhosa Feasts for the guests at the guesthouse. We
jumped at the chance to give her an opportunity to develop her own business as well as enhance our own. Xhosa Feasts were duly added to the website and it was not long before a request came in from some guests who had booked in for a few nights. The following conversation ensued between Beauty and Madam. Beauty: What am I going to cook? Madam: (puzzled) Well, I don’t know, for goodness sake, I’m British! What actually is traditional Xhosa food? Beauty: I’m not really sure – can’t you use that googly thing to find out? Madam: But you must know, what do you eat at weddings and family get-togethers? Beauty: (light dawns) Kentucky Fried Chicken, of course! (Madam gets rapidly onto the Googly thing) Madam: It’s samp and beans, mfino spinach, baked chicken, mealie pap…… Beauty: (interrupting) But that’s what we eat all the time, who on earth wants to eat that??? Madam: … sigh … The feasts have been very successful and have given Beauty an additional source of income. Beauty’s greatest love is décor and she is responsible for many of the elegant touches and extras around our guest house, Impangele. Her second greatest love is shopping – and after that, her lovely family. Her self-confidence has grown along with the business, she has become an efficient manager, staff-trainer, receptionist and handles the booking software and the Googly thing with aplomb! She retains the privilege of ironing, however, as she feels, quite rightly, that no one can match her perfectionism.
