MEMPERBARU JAKARTA recycling as a process of reconnecting and responding to urban forces

Project Location : Jakarta, Indonesia Project Type : Market & Recycling Center Location Climate : Hot & Humid Squarefootage : 200,000 ft2 Recognition : Capstone Distinguished Project - (2016) University of Arizona 20 Weeks - 2016 - Capstone Thesis - Michael Kothke - University of Arizona

In the ruins of the Dutch Colonial Old Town of Jakarta, this Market and Recycling Center proposes a way of reimagining urban systems. Industrial and commercial cycles cross and entwine, dancing with the historic buildings, at times taking over, inhabiting, or peeling away. This is a proposal for reconnecting and responding to the forces that shape the urban environment through five narrative streams: Recycling, Market, Food, Circulation, and River. This project is meant to live and to breathe, to dance with the shadows and to pulse with the cycles of inhabitation.

RECYCLING STREAM The Recycling Stream becomes the functional backbone of the project defining and merging with the existing structure to create a voluminous canopy, echoing the vernacular of Java and long-span industrial typologies. Bamboo frames are counterbalanced to form the cantilevering structure, and enveloped by a gently breathing membrane.

C A N O P Y V E N T I L AT I O N Ventilation is a main driver for this project because of the climate and programmatic needs (ie, the odor of the recycling facility). Drawing from the vernacular Indonesian construction, the design incorporates high, open spaces to allow for East/West ventilation.

INTERSECTING CYCLES Drawing out the content of five programmatic streams highlighted the needs and relationships of this mix of programs. Arranging the objects linearly, then twisting and connecting them gave rise to an intertwining, cyclical diagram.

NARRATIVE LANDSCAPE The Navajo Code Talkers Museum and Veteran’s Center

Project Location : Window Rock, Navajo Nation Project Type : Museum, Veteran’s Campus Location Climate : Semiarid Squarefootage : 85,000 ft2 Client : Navajo Code Talkers Association Collaborator : Ryan Baxter Recognition : AIA Emerging Professionals Showcase - (2016) AIA 13 Weeks - Fall 2015 - arc 401 - Brad Lang - University of Arizona

This project synthesizes personal conversations with Navajo Code Talkers Association, research on their stories, Navajo culture, and site conditions. All work is being used for their fundraising campaign. Embracing the importance of storytelling as it relates to the earth, this scheme flows along the landscape. The Navajo tradition of weaving became a lens to relate to the site, and tell the story through architecture.

Stories are as much a part of the land as the people who dwell on it. The Navajo tradition of weaving and storytelling is a lens to relate to this landscape. Arranged in long curves, the buildings follow the topography, flowing along the surface of the earth. TIMELINE

COLLABORATION CENTER interdisciplinary laboratory for research, work, and exhibition

Project Location : University of Arizona Campus, Tucson, Arizona Project Type : Institution Library Location Climate : Hot, Arid Squarefootage : 82,000 ft2 13 Weeks - Fall 2014 - arc 401 - Matthew Trzebiatowski - University of Arizona

The way people consume information and collaborate has fundamentally shifted due to the advent of New Media. Architecture has something to learn from New Media: a rich environment of layered information, simultaneous streams of consciousness and emergent democracy. The Collaboration Center adopts this lens with “Venn-Diagrams” of space – which allow for the simultaneous existence of two programs in one place and connection between resources.

P R O G R A M M AT I C V E N N - D I A G R A M S Vertical cores penetrate through each floor to emphasize way-finding and connection. This is achieved by stacking similar programs above each other in space so that, despite the curious variations of each floor plate, resources are easy to locate. PROGRAM AREAS

ŽIJÍCÍ MOST The Living Bridge, Prague Brownfield Masterplan

Project Location : Prague, Czech Republic Project Type : Masterplan Component, Bridge Location Climate : Temperate Recognition : Design Excellence Award - (2015) AIA Southern Arizona Exhibit 6 Weeks - Spring 2015 - arc 451a - Mark Frederickson, Ph.D. - U. of Arizona

The “Living Bridge” acts as a functional connection for multiple modes of transportation, as well as a node of community gathering. It draws people together to gather and celebrate energy production and water purification, which is systematically integrated with the surrounding neighborhood - jobs, parks, and transportation.

I N T E G R AT E D S Y S T E M S Ensuring the safe connection and circulation requires that the bridge work like a series of circulatory ribbons, intertwining at different points and heights.

VERTICAL FARM:LIVING MUSEUM urban agriculture factory and living landmark

Project Location : San Francisco, California Project Type : Vertical Farm, Market, Health Club, Museum Location Climate : Temperate Squarefootage : 160,000 ft2 11 Weeks - Fall 2013 - arc 301 - Paul Weiner - University of Arizona

In the tradition of agricultural communities around the world, cycles of planting and harvest must coincide with programmatic elements. This urban agricultural factory invites the diverse community of San Francisco to experience the intersection of mixed uses. Where those programs meet becomes a node for reflection.

CASCADE OF GREENHOUSE MODULES Arranged to allow the most light into each greenhouse, the greenhouse modules are transparent from below, allowing the public to look up and experience the programs intertwining.

TIME ADJACENCY DIAGRAM Each wheel represents a programmatic cycle, read like a clock. These wheels “turn” like gears to intersect at necessary points.

BIRD-WATCHING TOWER structural exploration : dimensional wood tower

Project Location : Sierra Vista, Arizona Project Type : Wooden Watchtower Location Climate : Hot, Arid Squarefootage : 700 ft2

The bird-watching tower is sited in a grove of cottonwood trees near a riverbed. The design allows for open views in all directions, while offering protection from sun and rain. The concept for the structure is two continuous ribbons - one for the enclosure and one for the stairs.

Collaborators : Alex Mayer, Katie Roch, and Patrick Ceguera

The project included calculations on sizing structural timber and using typical dimensional lumber.
