Verb Conjugations Conjugation is basically a matter of matching a verb to a subject. Portuguese verbs come in three varieties: those that end in -ar, -er, and -ir. The -ar ending is your best friend; with a few exceptions, --ar verbs tend to be conjugated the same way, all the time. The -ir and -er verbs can be a little trickier. There are general rules for their conjugation, but not all verbs ending in -ir or -er follow the rules.
