Potentate: Illustrious Sir, Gary Radvansky Potentate of Alzafar Shriners

POTENTATE Gary Radvansky I would like to wish all the Mothers out there a very Happy Mother’s Day. Thank you for all you do. I am so excited about everything that is going on this year. Can you feel the energy in the air? Our events this year have been wonderful with everyone coming out and having a good time. Our membership committee headed by Noble Al Rapoza is doing an outstanding job bringing in new members and strengthening our relationships with our Masonic Lodges. We just finished our second parade for this year in Poteet, with an amazing number of Nobles and their families coming out to support our wonderful Shrine. By the time you read this, our participation in this year’s Flambeau Fiesta parade and the Cornyval Helotes parade has come and gone and I’m sure they will be just as fun! I also want to thank all that support the Shrine’s Fiesta Medal fundraising project this year for our fraternity! Remember……Family, Fraternity & Fun!! Congratulations to our OG Travis Elmendorf and his Lady Brenda for doing a great job with this year’s Children’s Easter Party. This was a wonderful gathering with children & families laughing and having a good time. There is always much to do in preparing for these children’s events and their hard work paid off, so a big thank you to Travis & Brenda, and to everyone that came together to help make this another successful event this year for the kids! Let the competitions begin…… The 2017 Texas Shrine Association All State Ceremonial Session is coming June 15th–17th. We are encouraging all units to participate and compete for Alzafar! This year, the Shrine will cover the cost of registration and one half of the hotel room cost for two nights for all “competing” Nobles. That being said, if two Nobles share a room, the hotel cost is covered for 2 nights in full. We appreciate all your hard work and efforts so let’s bring back

the trophies for Alzafar! Upgrades to our facility have already begun. All the light poles in our parking lot have been replaced and new LED lights installed. The poles removed were the originals and were rusted out at the base. Because of a recent storm, one pole had fallen and could have caused major injury and/or damage. Now, our parking is better secure, ten times brighter, and more energy efficient. In addition, our trees have been trimmed in front, our sign is scheduled to be up and running by the end of April, and the restroom project is on schedule to start July 17th and will take approximately 4 weeks to complete. This is a huge renovation that will make a major difference. Cheryl and I want to thank you for all you do for our children and our Shrine. Your support is so overwhelming and we are so proud to be by your side. It is truly an honor and a privilege to serve you. May God, bless you all!

Another congrats to Oriental Guide, Travis Elmendorf, his Lady Brenda, and the rest of team Elmendorf for hosting a great children’s Easter Party. Noble Elmendorf and his Lady pulled everything together and organized a very successful event which was enjoyed by all. I look forward to what you guys come up with in the future. Lastly Nobles, don’t forget that we celebrate Mother’s Day this month and be sure to let her know…To the world she might just be one person, but to you she is the world. Happy Mother’s Day!

ASSISTANT RABBAN Eric DeWalt VIVA FIESTA, VIVA ALZAFAR Viva translation is to live. I say Viva Fiesta and Viva Alzafar. Long live Alzafar. This year has been a blast so far. The buzz throughout our Temple has been incredible. Our Temple is getting a face-lift, our sign is being turned back on and the brotherhood camaraderie is at an all time high.

CHIEF RABBAN Jason Triggs Congratulations to Noble Paul “Wrong Way” Dawson for being selected as Alzafar’s Shriner of the Month for May. Noble Dawson has been an integral part of the Alzafar NEMNUF unit’s success over the last few months. He has participated in just about every parade Alzafar has participated in during the last few years and he is always the first to stand up and offer a helping hand when one is needed. Recently, he was sought after for T.V. spots to promote the IHOP National Pancake Day and volunteered to visit IHOP locations where help was needed with Shriner presence. He also joined forces with the Membership Committee and donned his clown make-up to promote shrine membership at the Autorama Car Show at the Freeman Coliseum and performed his magic tricks which brought smiles to every child that walked by. If there is ever an occasion which would benefit from a clown being present, you can guarantee that if he is able, Wrong Way the Clown will be there. Noble Dawson exemplifies what we stand for as Masons and Shriners and has more than earned the recognition of Shriner of the Month.

We are firing on all cylinders now and there is no stopping us. A parade is what we do best and the Flambeau Parade for Fiesta San Antonio is right around the corner. If anyone needs a home base for the Flambeau Parade on Saturday the 29th of April, the clown unit has made-up in the parking lot of yours truly, Eric A. DeWalt Attorney at Law at 810 Brooklyn Ave. San Antonio, Texas 78215. Please, feel free to stop by for some refreshments and/or just a place to call home base before and after the parade. I ask you to please be smart and safe while out during all the FIESTA events. And lastly, I must say…GALA, GALA, GALA. Our Hospital Gala is coming to fruition. The event will be held October 14, 2017. If you would like to be on the Gala committee, please contact me. This is going to be a fun one, so come be part of the orchestration. God bless and thank you.

HIGH PRIEST AND PROPHET By: Marty Bartlett I hope you were able to attend our recent Children’s Easter Party at the shrine center. Our OG, Travis Elmendorf, put on a fine party. Make sure to watch for his next 2 children’s parties this year, which also promise to be fun ones. I was very encouraged to see such a good turnout for the Poteet parade with more units in attendance than I have seen in a long time. It is a very impressive show when all of our groups are together at a parade. It won’t be long until camp opens up again and summer is upon us. Look forward to seeing everyone out at camp and other shrine events soon.

ORIENTAL GUIDE Travis Elmendorf I would like to begin by giving thanks to all the Nobility, Ladies, Units and Clubs who gave, supported and attended the Children’s Easter Party. What a special day. Brenda and myself enjoyed watching all the comradery and the families having a good time. It truly takes teamwork to pull off an event such as this, something that the Alzafar family does not lack. I am still finding particles of confetti about myself. Thank you so much. Missed some of you at the last OG Round Table. We have many great ideas that are being discussed and several that we are looking to move forward on. Foremost is the Shrine Fun Run, 5k-10k, with lighter objectives for walkers and wee ones. It has a tentative date for the month of October, so if you know of anyone or any business that would like to assist with a sponsorship, please feel free to reach out. Any and all help would greatly be appreciated. A couple ideas that the Roundtable is discussing are: a comedy show, a musical production for our grand stage, and a music concert series for the pavilion. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, the 24th of April. Looking forward to seeing you there

TREASURER’S OFFICE Ron Trine I hope you continue to notice the many committed capital improvements well under way, with several more forthcoming to improve your facility. Please watch and enjoy the transformation from the “Old Mausoleum” to the New “San Antonio Shrine Auditorium”. Please come out and support your local blue lodges each month. The more we can help them increase their membership, the more opportunities we will have to do the same. I do need your assistance on record keeping issues. I know that you all are very concerned about a timely repayment program for reimbursable expenses. You will remember from last month at stated and in Achbar, we gave you the time line for reimbursement. I would remind you to be diligent in getting your requests for reimbursement into the Recorder or Alex in his absence. Reimbursement forms are readily available in the office. The cut off will be the week following the event in which you are asking for reimbursement. We also will only deal with “Lost Receipts” on an exception by exception basis. If you have not turned in your A&B financial reports, you are way beyond the cutoff date and ultimately putting your unit, club or Temple at risk. I realize you are tired of listening to this, but the need to file this is just not me whining. It is prescribed by Shrine Law § 334.6. Again, this is not, contrary to rumors the “Temple’s way” of determining how much money a unit or club has, it is a requirement under IRS and has to be submitted under the Temple financials and 990’s to maintain our exempt status. Failure to submit can lead to revocation of our exempt status and potentially elimination of the unit or club. Don’t shoot the messenger, if you submitted, thank you, if you are unsure, contact Alex. I thank you in advance for your continued support and help on this issue. As always, I am proud to serve you and if there is anything I can help you with, please contact me. A wise man once said, “There are no great limits to growth because there are no limits of human intelligence, imagination, and wonder.”

RECORDERS CORNER T-Bone Tommy Leverett Recorder to the Stars Hopefully all the Units are ready to head north to Waco for the 2017 Texas Shrine Association (TSA). The dates this year are June 15th-17th. We will be staying at the Hampton Inn & Suites located at 2501 Marketplace Drive, Waco, TX 76711. I hope your Unit is planning to come to TSA and compete with your fellow Shriners across Texas. We have implemented a New Reimbursement Policy. All documents for reimbursement must be turned into the Temple Office one week after the event. In March of this year, we had Nobles turning in receipts for 2016. For TSA, our Potentate has said the Temple will reimburse ½ the room rate for two days for Nobles that are competing at TSA and the Temple will reimburse the Registration for the competing Nobles. Some of the best ideas come from our Nobles. Please let me know what needs to be repaired or implemented to make our Temple more efficient. You can call me at the office, send me a text message (210)617-8977 or an email to alzafar@flash.net. Don’t forget, I work for you, the Nobility, so contact me at any time. At the end of March, we hired a new employee, Lynda Hall, to take over the Marketing/Renting of our Shrine Auditorium. We now will handle the marketing in house rather than outsourcing. There is no doubt in my mind Lynda will take our rentals to a new high. If you or your employer needs to rent space or your Unit/ Club needs to book a room, please call Lynda at 210-496-6334. Next time you are at the Shrine, come in and introduce yourself to Lynda. Free advertising is available. That is right we want to promote your business in the New Masonic Yellow Pages. As your Recorder, I get emails and phone calls for members that are looking for AC/Heating business, plumbers, electricians, realtors ect. So, fax, mail, or drop by your information to the Shrine Center. Come out and join us at the next event and find out why I say “Alzafar Rocks”!

Shriners Hospitals for Children attains highly coveted 4-Star Charity Navigator rating Rating showcases organization’s commitment to transparency and fiscal responsibility Thursday, March 16, 2017 Charity Navigator 4 Star Charity logo Charity Navigator, America’s premier independent charitable organization evaluator, has awarded Shriners Hospitals for Children with its prestigious Four Star Charity award. Such distinction recognizes Shriners Hospitals for Children for its sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency. Only 25 percent of the evaluated charities have received the coveted 4-star award, thus signaling that Shriners Hospitals for Children outperforms the majority of charities in America. The Four Star rating is Charity Navigator’s highest possible rating, indicating that Shriners Hospitals for Children adheres to best practices and executes its mission in a financially efficient way.

“We are honored to have attained Charity Navigator’s highest distinction. This four star designation is so coveted because it distinguishes Shriners Hospitals for Children from more than 1.5 million American charities,” said John McCabe, executive vice president, Shriners Hospitals for Children. “Charity Navigator differentiates charities like ours for being an efficient and transparent organization. This gives donors greater confidence in the charitable decisions they make.” This is the third recognition that Shriners Hospitals for Children has received in the past year in the philanthropy category. Shriners Hospitals for Children was ranked the 91st largest charity in the world by The Chronicles of Philanthropy and the 53rd largest charity in the U.S. by Forbes magazine. “Receiving this rating gives Shriners Hospitals for Children even more credibility among our donors and displays our commitment to living our mission and helping transform the lives of as many children as possible,” McCabe said. For more information about Charity Navigator, visit CharityNavigator.org. About Charity Navigator Founded in 2001, Charity Navigator has become the nation’s largest and most utilized evaluator of charities. Charity Navigator’s rating system examines two broad areas of a charity’s performance; their financial health and their accountability and transparency. Forbes, Business Week, and Kiplinger’s financial magazine, among others, have profiled and celebrated Charity Navigator’s unique method of applying data-driven analysis to the charitable sector. We evaluate ten times more charities than our nearest competitor and currently attract more visitors to our website than all other charity rating groups combined, thus making us the leading charity evaluator in America. Our data shows that users of our site donated more than they planned to before viewing our findings, and in fact, it is estimated that last year Charity Navigator influenced approximately $10 billion in charitable gifts.

Shriners Hospitals for Children brings critically injured Guatemalan children to United States for treatment Shriners Hospitals worked with Guatemalan and U.S. officials to arrange transport to their pediatric burn hospitals

Monday, March 13, 2017 Shriners Hospitals for Children® has admitted seven children in critical condition with burn injuries suffered in the March 8 children’s shelter fire in Guatemala. The children have been transported to the Boston and Galveston Shriners Hospitals pediatric burn centers. Critically burned patients are typically placed in pediatric intensive care units due to the severity of their injuries. Multidisciplinary teams at each location will provide all aspects of burn care, which could include surgery, treatment, rehabilitation and psychological support. Within 24 hours of the disaster, Shriners Hospitals deployed an emergency medical team to Guatemala to provide onsite evaluation and care. The team worked with Guatemalan and U.S. officials to secure approval to transfer those who required further treatment at Shriners Hospitals in the United States. A second team has been sent to Guatemala to provide additional support. Shriners Hospitals for Children stands ready to help other Guatemalan children if needed. “Shriners Hospitals is uniquely prepared to respond to a tragedy of this proportion, having specialized pediatric burn hosptials across the country,” said Chris Smith, chairman of the Board of Directors, Shriners Hospitals for Children. “We have a deep history of mobilizing to respond to tragedies across the globe and have committed to help these children.” Since entering the field in the 1960s, Shriners Hospitals for Children has contributed to most of the significant advancements in acute and reconstructive pediatric burn care. Shriners Hospitals is often sought out for complex domestic and international cases. Since 1922, Shriners Hospitals for Children has provided pediatric specialty care to children with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate. Shriners Hospitals has treated more than 1.3 million children from more than 180 countries over the last 95 years.

Children’s Camps

First Lady Smith logoEthel Smith, First Lady of Shriners International, believes that encouraging our young patients to have new experiences will help them discover inner strengths, while having a lot of fun. Her program, The Sky’s the Limit, will augment funding for Shriners Hospitals for Children’s camp programs, which provide these opportunities. Camps may be held onsite at the hospitals, or somewhere in the local community. Activities range from therapeutic horseback riding to skiing adventures. Some programs are designed to encourage patients with a specific condition, such as spina bifida; there are also camps for those with hand deficiencies, burns and spinal cord injuries. Shriners Hospitals for Children camps Camps for Children with burn injuries Children with burn injuries often look different. They may have severe scarring or have lost a limb; they may wear pressure garments or a face mask to facilitate healing. Our professional staff, including the child life specialists, help patients come to terms with the variety of traumas and difficulties they have experienced as a result of their injuries. As patients learn they have the power to shape their social interactions, they can return more confidently to active and fulfilling lives.

ALZAFAR NEMNUF By: Pee Tee, President

Divan Affirms New Marketing Director By the Editor Meet Lynda Hall, Alzafar Shriners, and its San Antonio Shrine Auditorium’s newly minted Marketing Manager. After terminating our long-time contract with ESD and Associates, the Divan sought to find the right person to take over the complex duties of selling our two brands; The San Antonio Shrine Auditorium and Alzafar Shriners. Our Illustrious Potentate as noted in his last two messages to the nobility his drive to make once again our Shrine relevant. Ms. Hall is charged with not only to continue the meteoric growth in rentals of 2010 rebranded San Antonio Shrine Auditorium but to bring the brand of Alzafar Shriners to the forefront. With the unanimous support of our Board of Directors, our Illustrious Sir says of Ms. Hall, “Lynda is an engaged, driven leader focused on managing client relationships, developing strategic partnerships, creating internal marketing plans, technology advancement, and performance improvement. A strong business background who is notable organized in her approach to tasks, and has an unbridled passion for results. Her superior interpersonal communication skills allow Lynda to effectively build professional coalitions to produce and deliver creative solutions that enable Alzafar to have more reliable business networks and ultimately improve overall customer impressions and experience.” In confirming the budgeted salaried position, Ms. Hall’s was especially qualified to hold the position. Her accomplished levels of thoughtful insight and professional engagement, technical expertise, account management, and project management allow her to be a customer-focused business manager. These traits are evident through her multi-year experience in sales, social empowerment, accounting, finance, and public relations. Our Divan has appointed her as an exempt employee, and her duties require that she answer directly to the Divan and Finance Committees. Our Potentate also noted, “It was important to identify and highlight soft-skills that can give Alzafar management an idea of how quickly she might adapt and solve problems. In distilling the trait, the Divan came away convinced that she can be relied on to follow through, and how effectively she can lead and motivate others. Her passion is inculcated through excellent customer service, strong professional relationships, leadership, image development, and with growing a volunteer base.” Ms Hall may be contacted for all your rental needs by email at sashrineauditorium@gmail.com or by calling our Shrine Auditorium Offices at (210) 496-6334. We wish her well in her new position and welcome her to the Shrine family.

It is that time of the year when the NEMNUF shifts into high gear. We will have an excellent showing at the Poteet Strawberry Festival. Next Monday, we will have our monthly unit meeting with a full house. Our meetings are legendary for our attendance. We are a brotherhood and we enjoy dinner and our families being together. The Fiesta Flambeau is the end of April and it is always one of our best parades enjoyed by all of us. March was a big month for the NEMNUF. The Texas Shrine Clown Convention was in San Antonio and many of our members attended and competed. We enjoyed success in the competition events in many categories. We competed for the “President’s Award”. A team of 4 clowns: Carlos “Sunshine” Sandoval, Bobby “Ice Bucket” Miller, David “Howie U” Olivares and Pat “Pee Tee” Turner, had 10 minutes to take an ordinary individual, Josh “Rufus” Miller, and turn him into a clown in costume and makeup. Carlos did the hard part of the makeup, and of course, we won 1st Place. Next, we had Josh “Rufus” Miller compete as a novice clown in costume and makeup and he won 1st Place. John “Ozzie” Strandlie won 1st Place as a white face and Pat “Pee Tee” Turner won 1st Place in the Senior Category. In skit competition, we had Rick “Tater” Reyes and Garrett “Popp-E” Ethridge win 1st Place and Pat “Pee Tee” Turner and John Strandlie win 3rd Place and Pat “Pee Tee” Turner and Paul “Wrong Way” Dawson, 4th Place with over 20 competing in two man skits. This past 30 days has been especially sad with the passing of 2 of our beautiful sweet ladies. Elenita Gray, wife of Al “Freckles” Gray, passed in March and Barbara Brennan, wife of Bobby “OPPS” Brennan passed on April 5th. These ladies will enrich the heavens and be missed by our clown families. Our prayers go out to Al and Bobby in these difficult times. One of our best NEMNUF clowns ever, Julio “Rocky” Roque, has been in a battle with Alzheimer’s for quite some time. “Rocky” as we know, Julio to be called is in a very fragile critical condition and he needs all our prayers. I personally have prayed that whenever God takes “Rocky”, that he watches over him in his journey and safeguards him as he did for Elenita and Barbara. I have let God know he needs to prepare himself for these new friends and in “Rocky’s” case, get ready for a good laugh.

THE ANTIQUE CARRIAGE UNIT By: Bud Martin Before I get started, I owe everyone in our unit and those who read our article an apology; however, I make no excuses. My lovely wife, Eileen, has been very sick with ulcers on the bottom of her feet from Diabetes. She was being hospitalized because her ulcers are in bad condition. I lost tract of time, and I did not make the dead line soon enough

for the article. My Fault!!

The date isn’t set but it’s always a great show!

We have two parades during May. One is in Helotes, the Cornyval Parade on Sat, May 6th. The line-up is 7:30 AM; start time is 9:30 AM. I am looking forward to it. The Mustang has been down for repairs needed to the hydrolic system the controls the raising and lowering the convertible top of the car. If the pumps arrive in time for installment, our car will be up and running. I am keeping my fingers crossed. The second parade, will be on Sat., May 27th. which is the Memorial Day Parade in Bandera. The line-up is 9:00 AM with start time 11:00 AM.

If you’re a Shriner reading this and wondering what those folks in Boerne are up to, then come and find out! We meet on the third Wednesday of each month at different restaurants. This month on Wednesday, May 17th, we’re meeting at Longhorn Café Ol’ No. 9 at the corner of South Esser and River Road in Boerne at 6:00 PM for fun & fellowship hour and 7:00 PM for dinner with a short business meeting afterward. Give me a call on 210-698-6111 to let me know you’re coming and we’ll be ready for you.

It is time to hit the road again. I’ll be seeing you soon. Until then, “Common Sense is not so common.” Voltaire. Remember, no man stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child.

THE BAND By: Richard Wallace

THE BOERNE SHRINE CLUB By: Gary L. Bausell Nobles and Ladies:

TSA this year will involve competition since Moslah has decided to bring several bands. The schedule for the Texas Shrine Band Association competition has yet to be firmed up, but it will happen on Thursday, June 15th between noon and 5:00pm. We are in the process of selecting our program at this time.

If you live in the Boerne, Bergheim, Kendalia, Fair Oaks Ranch, or Northern San Antonio areas and would like to join and fellowship with a lively group of fellow Nobles and their Ladies, then come and join us at the Boerne Shrine Club. We enjoy getting together for fun and fellowship, as well as working together for the Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals and Alzafar’s Hospital Transportation Fund.

The Band would like to welcome a new drummer Jerry Hopkins to the band.

What’s Going On Right Now?

After that, our next big project will be to prepare for a performance of the Pretzelbenders German Band for one of the Beethoven Mannerchor Gartenkonzerts. These Gartenkonzerts are held on third Fridays between May and September.

We’re getting ready for Shriner’s Hospital for Children’s Collection Day in Boerne and the surrounding area. It is set for Saturday, April 15th and will be coordinated from Kendall Lodge at 897 E. Blanco Road in Boerne. We will meet at the lodge around 8:00 AM for breakfast tacos and go out around 9:00 AM to meet the public! We’re currently waiting on approval of the Potentate to start the coordination for another Boerne Shrine Club’s Gospel Show with the Marksmen Quartet as the headliners.

We have been invited to perform at Seguin’s Steak Break on Friday, May 1st for a contribution to our hospitals and a steak dinner. We have been asked to perform for a Harlandale HS Reunion this spring as well.

We are always looking for more performers, especially woodwinds, low brass, and percussion. We meet on Thursday evenings from 6:00pm until 7:30pm in Room 7. Come on by good music and good fellowship, a combination that’s hard to beat. If you have any questions, please call Richard Wallace at 210-219-6861 or email at rfwall@swbell.net.

CAMP ALZAFAR By: Mike “Mustache” Calloway CAMP OPENING 2017-Memorial Weekend May 27th It comes that time of the year for Camp Alzafar to “reopen” on Memorial Day weekend. Instead of a flood, we plan to have a golf event, meal, and a rocking party. The Camp website will be updated as we finalize the full agenda and everything runs on camp time. The weekend will commence on Friday, 5/26 with the standard, super secret, invitation only, patio party. Saturday, 5/27 will be a golf tournament with super prizes. Trust me, even if you don’t golf, this will be worth your time. In the afternoon, we will start the best Camp Alzafar camp opening party you’ve been to this year: brisket, door prizes and live band. Awards will be presented to the Shrine unit, lodge and non-Alzafar Shrine, with the most in attendance. The survivors will get up Sunday morning for coffee, church services, and the camp association meeting. I can confirm the gaga ball pit is scheduled. We have more planned but need to leave something for a surprise. Will it be Clown Alley or pin the tassel on the Potentate; show up and find out?

Let’s rewind some now, TSMPA Midwinter was held during the month of March and to my surprise was well attended this year. I was glad to see a rise in attendance from Alzafar as this is the time to discuss items that affect you as a competing team. Business was handled and new officers elected. One major change that will take place in 2018 is that Midwinter will now be pushed back to August in conjunction with Obstacle. This was done to boost participation and save TSMPA money. If it works, this will be the format for the years to follow. If you want more info on this just give me a call or shoot me an email. Another subject that has not been ratified is the lady’s policy. As of right now, TSMPA still cannot find anyone to insure the ladies and kids, so this year in Tyler ladies and kids will still not be able to ride. Now there has been some policies out there but not within our budget. So, for now the ladies will just have to cheer the guys on. Oh yes, let’s not forget our unit room. Work has been going on and it is looking sharp. The new TV was hung on the wall, cameras installed, pool table brought in, and the cherry on top, a new Kegarator. The new TV has been getting a work out in the form of UFC fights, Spurs games, and the other night after our meeting we turned on a Rangers game. 2017 has really been shaping up good for us. Want to see what all the buzz is about, join us room 4, 1st Monday of the month at 7:30 pm. That’s it for me, and finally, cue the music,,,,, Don’t call it a comeback, we’ve been here for years!!!

Don’t say no one invited you. Bring yourselves, your family, and friends you like enough to share with the Nobility. Mike “mustache” Calloway –Camp President question, comments: campalz.nobles@gmail.com

CHAPARRALS By: Chris Celis TSMPA PAST PRES 2012 Sorry for no article for the past few months. I’ve been slacking and now have to get back to it. Well it has been done, the trigger has been pulled and we are officially heading in the right direction. What am I talking about? The new Drift Trikes have been arriving, currently we have three on the ground with three more on the way. By TSA, we should have all six. The first two arrived and were put together and later test ridden. An awesome award winning crawfish boil with all the trimmings prepped by our own Sec/ Tres Ariel Garcia. It was straight up Mardi Gras at the shrine that day, we ate, tightened a few nuts and bolts and then had the time of our lives. First off let me tell you, fun does not describe these things. They are straight up bonkers!!! All it takes is one twist of the throttle and bam these things are gone. I never thought I would get that rush again, I came into the shrine in 1995 (yeah 95), joined the Chaparral and loved every minute of it. Those gold dune buggies gave me a rush every time I started one up and dumped the clutch. Until now I never thought I would get that feeling back, let’s just say that little devil has been woken up! Now these trikes are gonna take some getting used to, the PVC covers over the rear wheels provide endless hours of

It is time for a reminder that the Directors Staff Hoedown will be held May 6th on the pavilion at the Temple starting at 6 P.M. till 10 P.M. with food, fun, chicken bingo, music, dancing, and above all lots of socializing. Come on out and join your fellow Shrine brothers and their families as you won’ be sorry. It is BYOB and we don’t mean bring your own broad! At our March meeting, we had the pleasure of our ladies attending and we hope they had an enjoyable time as we plan to do this more often through the year. If there is a suggestion to improve the palatability of our meetings, let us know as we try to keep them short so that we may have more fellowship with each other. It is up to you. Our attendance is down some, are you part of the problem? If so why? Our sick, lame, and lazy report is a little better with Ed Lee showing up at several functions even in a wheelchair, Rossman had a second back problem but is back at Franklin Park TPC. Nuckles Gimbel is still hobbling along as well as myself with bad knees. Shirley Smith is back home with a new knee and doing well, also Hoffman seems to be doing better now. Let’s face it, the aging process is hard work and sure not easy. We ask the Supreme Grand Master to lay his healing hands on all of us that have health issues and we ask that he comfort the McDougall and Gray families during their time of sorrow. We will be dark during the month of June so don’t plan on being there. Will report on our bus trip to the hospitals on May 2nd next month. As always, it is “happy trails to you until we meet again” and may the Good Lord above take a likin’ to you. Until next time, “Adios amigos,”

for being brave for inviting the unit to their house for a get together. All members that missed out, you all really missed some good food and good Kool-Aid. Everybody had a super time. Maybe we’ll get invited again!! Don’t anybody get their hopes up.

THE DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS By: Richard Wallace

The Drum and Bugle Corps will begin preparing for All-State in June. We are planning to change our program this year and if you would like to be a part of our new effort, come on out and join us on Thursday nights in Room 8 from 7:309:00pm. We are always looking for more musicians. WE DO NOT MARCH! Currently we are performing on brass instruments that are played in the band; Bb trumpets, Bb marching French horns, marching trombones, marching baritones, etc. We do have instruments that we can lend to you. We need low brass and percussion players. We also need percussionists and we have drums for you to play. We are a very low-pressure organization in terms of expectations and very flexible concerning time commitment. Thursday evening practices in Room 8 start at 7:30pm and end at 9:00pm. If you have any questions, please call Richard Wallace at 210219-6861 or email at rfwall@swbell.net. Come on out and join us!

GOLF GIMMES By: Walt, the Sub-Scribe TSGA Mid Winter is over, the competition results not the best, but Alzafar can be proud and have the bragging rights of owning the rare honor of a hole in one at a Mid Winter competition. CONGRATULATIONS PP BOB JONES. After coming off the high from TSGA, Nobles Todd, Farmer, Studdard, Thompson, Rhein, Callison, Wilmore and Atencio, answered the call from a Brother of Del Mar Masonic Lodge 1350 in Corpus Christi, for support in their fund raiser golf tournament. Besides winning second place in tournament, and the fraternal interaction, we all felt it was well worth the time and expense to assist our fraternal brothers. President Todd and an Army size squad of unit golfers and ladies assisted in the Alzafar Easter Egg Hunt, which, as expected was a great success, a tradition of Alzafar. “Golf appeals to the child in us. Just how childlike golfers become? This is proven by their frequent inability to count past five.” John Updike. FORE

HONOR GUARD By: Al Aranda We started the year with a big bang down South in Laredo, then we moved to the ballroom here at the Temple for the Masonic Youth Brunch followed by the Stated Meeting. Afterwards we moved to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade where we marched on water and did not get out of step once on the San Antonio River. A big thanks to all the members that supported the Club and the I-Hop fundraiser. Need to thank the President and First Lady, the Horgans,

We need to start getting ready for the big Easter Egg Hunt for the kiddos and for Fiesta as they are just around the corner. All members didn’t forget to call the office to give the information on the kiddos that will be attending the Easter Egg Hunt. Ladies you all should be getting a call for Fiesta. Till we meet again, everybody behaves and we ask the Good Lord to look over us to keep us safe and in good health.

HOT SANDS BBQ UNIT By: Brad Beseth

The Hot Sands Barbecue Unit was honored to cook for the DeMolay Old South Ritual Tournament on April 1st & 2nd. Some big thanks go out to all unit members who helped and especially to the #3 International Order of the Rainbow for Girls who helped with serving. We will be representing the Alzafar Shrine at the ASCO BBQ Cook Off and Car Show, which is to be held on May 20th. Please come out and show your support for our unit and look at the awesome cars participating in the car show. It will be held at 4146 Interstate 10 East, San Antonio, TX, 78219. Hope to see some of you there. We will be having our 2nd annual BBQ and Barn Dance on June 3rd. Clif and the Dirt Road Band will be back by popular demand. This is a family friendly event that will be held at the pavilion of the shrine center. Tickets will be available for purchase soon from any unit member. Hot Sands would like to invite any Noble who is interested in or has a passion for all things BBQ, family, friendship, and fun, to please join us on the 2nd Wednesday of each month for our unit meeting. We meet at the pavilion and start our meeting at 7:00 pm.

PROVOST GUARD By: Floyd Barker Our monthly meeting was held on April 5th with 13 members and 5 wives present. Marshal David Hadley provided a delicious meal of fried fish and french fries. The 11 shooters who attended the Mid-Winter shoot in Corpus Christi during March were proud to present the club with the 2nd place trophy that the D-Team won. Plans are under way for our next shoot which will be held on June 16th at TSA in Waco. We will be shooting at the Central Texas Pistol & Rifle Club located at 384 Range Road, China Springs, Texas. The Hampton Inn Waco South on Market Place Drive will be Alzafar’s host hotel. The Temple will reimburse Nobles for their registration fees and reimburse them for ½ of their room cost for 2 days. You should have received your registration information by the time you are reading this. The dates for the September shoot in El Paso have been changed to September 22nd and 23rd. Parade season is under way

(CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE 11) and your participation is always appreciated. The parades are a great way to help promote our fraternity. We are always looking for new members. All interested Shriners are welcome to join. Our monthly meetings are held on the first Wednesday evening of each month. Cocktails and visitation begins at 6:00, dinner is served at 6:30 and our meeting starts at 7:00. Wives are always invited and encouraged to join us. If anyone has any information for the newsletter, please contact Floyd Barker by the 10th of each month. Keep your powder dry till next time!

ROADSTER RUMBLINGS By: El Rocko This was our Roadster Rumbling for this past Jan., but it did not make the Achbar. In homage to our Fellow Noble Buck, and his years of faithful service, I’m putting it out in this next newsletter, as this is the least we can do for him, as this was his last news letter in his time as Secretary.

El Bucko “As we come into a New Year, I finally surrender the quill for the Achbar articles. I transferred my Shrine membership to Alzafar from Fort Worth in 1983. Within a few months, I was writing Achbar columns for the Patrol. Since then, I’ve written columns for the Rod n Gun Club, the Golf Unit, and of course the Red Roadsters. It is kinda fun sharing your own slant on things. But time marches on and a younger voice is needed to keep things fresh. Rumor has it that the Achbar will shortly be digital only. I’ve tried that-not my cup of tea. Now is the time of year that we can get those little things fixed on our Roadsters for the coming parade year. The Potentate elect has told me we will have plenty of opportunities to ride them this year. We need to remind the general public of the Shrine mission, and generate interest in the Shrine Circus. That is our mission; having fun and helping kids. Had occasion to visit the Houston and Galveston hospitals in early December to deliver Christmas toys for the kids. When you see those beautiful children and how they cope with their physical problems, yet they are smiling. It tears your heart out. God bless Shrine hospitals. Brother Dave Gardner reminds us we should never get into fights with ugly people, they don’t have anything to lose”. Finally, thanks very much to all the outgoing Roadster Officers and their years of service, and Special Thanks to EL Bucko!

She was a very loving as well as generous person. My wife and I have traveled over a lot of the world with Elenita and Al and those trips were the best of times in our lives. We will all miss her friendly smile and it is our wish that the Supreme Grand Master above comfort Al and his family during these trying times. Our April meeting was very sparsely attended and it possibly could have been the stormy weather. However, we missed you, the food was great and as always those of us that were there enjoyed the fellowship. Look in the mirror and ask yourself why wasn’t I there? While our attendance has been dwindling, we hope that it is not a permanent happening and that we can get back to have a nice size group that can have a nice Sunday social and fellowship. It would be great if enough interest is shown where we can again schedule gambling trips, dove hunts and fishing trips. It is up to you as we need the input to make things happen. Kayak fishing at the coast is $40 for 1/2 day without a guide, full day is $55 without a guide. For four people with a guide, 1/2 day is $400 and a full day for four with a guide is $550. If you are interested, call Craig Noyes, our Secretary-Treasurer for more details. Barbara Brennan passed away and may the Supreme Grand Master comfort Bobby and family in their time of sorrow. Barbara will be missed. Our sick, lame, and lazy report finds Ed Lee attending functions again, Nuckles Gimbel not getting around great and still on oxygen, Al beginning to drive again and then losing Elenita. Good to see Weldon and Lynn Burr back with us again. Let us all keep them all in our prayers and hope that the Good Lord above lays his healing hands upon them. We should be grateful for the great country we live in as well as the life style we have. Life is precious and we all need to live life to its fullest. Adios for now!

SHOTGUN UNIT By: Bill Willis

I reported in last month’s Achbar that the Alzafar Shotgun Unit would be competing against temples from all over Texas in the Texas Shrine Shotgun Sports Association (TSSSA) Mid-winter shoot March 11th in Waco. This month I’m proud to report (drum roll please) that the “Smokin’ Clays” brought home first place trophies in both the skeet and trap events, and placed first overall in the tournament. This is the first time the unit placed first overall as a team in a major competition since we were formed. The B Squad also had a fantastic showing placing 2nd in the skeet event and 3rd in the trap event. A great big thanks to all the ladies that attended and provided the awesome support we needed to push us to the next level. We couldn’t have done it without you.

ALZAFAR ROD & GUN CLUB By: Charley “D”

What a loss we must endure with the passing of Lady Elenita Gray, one our most dedicated and loyal members. Elenita was a joy to be around as well as she was always a lady.

Our next big charity event is Pulling 4 Kids, a sporting clays shoot which will be held Saturday, May 13th at Joshua Creek Ranch, located in the Texas hill country just a few minutes northwest of San Antonio, and don’t forget this event is open to the public and is one of the biggest fund raisers of the year for our hospitals and transportation fund. If you are a shooter, register a five man team, or as an individual, and enjoy one of the finest sporting clays venues in the nation. If you’re not a shooter, we can still use your support the day of the event with our live and silent auctions, registration, or just enjoying a fun-filled day of good food and entertainment. Register or donate today and join us at www.joshuacreek.com, visit us at www.pulling4kids.org, or contact a member of the Shotgun Unit. June will also be a busy month for us as we’ll be back in Waco competing at TSA. The good news is we’ll again be shooting both skeet and trap at the same range where we were victorious at TSSSA. It looks like we’ll have another great turn out and will be entering three squads in the tournament. With a little luck, some straight shootin’ and support from our ladies, the President’s trophy could be coming home to Alzafar. So come out and cheer us on Thursday morning, June 15th at the Waco Skeet and Trap Club.

ALTURI COURT #89 LADYS OF THE ORIENTAL SHRINE By: Lady Nancy Cwagenberg

So what to say about our Ladys of the Oriental Shrine but we have a very exciting new year we all looking forward to. We’ll start off with our newly Elected Officers, and new High Priestess, Frankie Tuma. Our installation event was a rainbow of beautiful colors, as the new dresses were worn with pride and honor. Here inside this ring we belong to is a fraternity of loving and caring people with high morals and values where we give back and have fun doing so. What a wonderful world we live in. July 15-Old Bag Luncheon August 19-Mystery Dinner Theater Septemer30-Putting on the Glitz November our Shriners Circus These are just to name a few of our main fund raising events. Please mark your calendars because we plan on having more fun and raising more money. Isn’t that what life is all about? We are always looking for new members too. If anyone is interested, ask any of our lady members. Make new friends and keep the old one is silver and the others cold. Our stated meetings are on the first Thursday where we have our meal at 6:30 pm and our meeting starts at 7:00 pm. Each meeting starts with smiles and laughter, and ends the same way. Thank you for your participation, your help, giving and being here!!
